No Sync when network drive connected

Hello,
I have an ipod nano that won't sync through itunes when network drives are mapped.
I am not trying to sync to the network drive, but just the presence of network drives stops the nano from syncing with itunes.
As soon as I disconnect the network drives the ipod syncs with itunes fine.
I have tried this on two different computers and the same thing happens.
I am using Windows XP-sp2 with the latest itunes (6.0.4) and the latest updates for the ipod.
Has anyone else experienced this?
Any workarounds?
Thank you in advance.
Chris

Hi win,
See this article, in particular the bit about mapped drives and changing the drive letter. Might help.

    Hi!
I figured out what the issue was, finally. After playing around, I noticed that my InDesign Fonts folder, had "alias" links to some fonts that resided on that shared drive. As soon as I deleted all the ones that where aliases, the error went away. Hopefully this helps someone in the future.

  • Automatically sync when iPad is connected

is it possible to automatically sync when iPad is connected? I don't get the choise of marking a checkbox like the one I get on my iPhones summary-tab.
    What I'm using:
    iPhone 5 iOS 7 GM
    iPad 3 iOS 7 GM
    iTunes 1.1b48
    iPhone
    iPad

I'm puzzled. In itunes, when my iPhone is connected to my Mac and the iPhone selected in the left hand pane, after then clicking on the Summary tab at the top of my screen, in the Options section below there is a check box I can select to "Automatically sync when this iPhone is connected". However, when I follow the same procedure with my iPad there is no checkbox to "Automatically sync when this iPhone is connected". It's just not there. Instead I see "Open iTunes when this iPad is selected".
If there is a setting in the Summary Tab to automatically sync an iDevice - I have never seen it. Yes there is a preference in iTunes to allow the devices to auto sync - but the setting in iTunes is for iTunes to open automatically when the device is connected. That setting is greyed out if you turn off auto sync in the iTunes preferences. There is also a setting to sync over WiFi and you have to enable that if you want to sync over WiFi - but not automatically sync over WiFi.
There is no setting on the iPad itself for auto syncing. There is a statement at the top of the iTunes WiFi sync setting that states the device will auto sync when plugged in, etc. - but no button to turn on Auto Sync on the iPad.
The iTunes Helper login item is if you cannot get iTunes to auto launch when your devices are connected. It should be enabled in that setting - iTunes Helper should be checked.

  • I can't access my USB network drive connected to my router.

I have a G5 that I was running Tiger, and could easily access a usb network drive connected to my router. As soon as I upgraded to Leopard, I sporadically get access, but usually not.
I just purchased an iMac with Snow Leopard and then upgraded to Lion, but I have never had access to this drive.
I can't get access with either Mac now, but I have no problem accessing the drive from a PC on the same home network, so I know the drive is connected properly, and is working properly.
Any thoughts how to access this drive from my Macs?

Let's say that the name of your drive is Hard Drive
Check using AirPort Utility to get the IP address of your AirPort Extreme, for example you see that it is 10.0.1.1
You'll need to know the device name for the AirPort Extreme. This is not the wireless password, it's the device password.
On the PC, open My Computer
Click on Tools and select Map Network Drive.
Select the drive you want, "Z" for example
On the next line for Folder, type in
    \\10.0.1.1\Hard Drive
    Click Finish
    Type in your user name
Type in the device password for the AirPort Extreme

  • Slow iPod sync with network drive

I run a small network for my home/office (I am self employed) with about 4 PCs for me and my family.
We have 3 iPods in our family and we just use one PC to host iTunes, but because we have so much music, I have put the music on a network drive served from my file server (Windows Small Business Server - Windows Server 2003 based).
There's no problem with this setup, except one:
I've noticed that when iPods sync with iTunes, it takes a very long time, perhaps 5 times as long than when I had my music files on an external hard drive directly connected to the PC on which we run iTunes.
This is fustrating. My question is: is there anything that can be done about this ?
I can't really understand why this should be an issue. iTunes has, stored in the library files on my local PC, the details of all my music files. So when my iPod syncs, surely iTunes consults the iPod and consults what is in iTunes and figures out what should change - and then and only then should iTunes need to connect to the network drive to actually get any necessary files. Is my understanding wrong of what iTunes is doing when syncing an iPod ?
The issue is that even with no changes, sync-ing is an issue.
Any help on this gratefully received - have looked in this forum and other places, but haven't managed to trawl and info on my issue.

Having been given an iPod video 60Gig as a present, I am sometimes forced to use it.
Recently I tried - I downloaded and installed latest itunes 7.5 on the PC running Windows XP.
Built up the library of music - tried to do a sync. So slow I nearly hit the PC. The transfer rate would merely get 40 Meg on in 5 minutes (thats my estimate all I know is it never finished). I tried to leave it running for 3 hours and still not finished - the size of music to transfer was about 2400 songs.
I then tried to use Vista Home Basic - with itunes 7.5 - it wouldnt even recognize the ipod.
After a few days of giving up and banging my head against the wall I tried Linux too - but that was slow too.
I eventually went back to Vista and de-installed itunes 7.5 - found version 6.05 and installed it. It went through like clockwork (well as clockwork as can be it was magically fast but fast enough to fill half of the 60Gig).
I then had the magic idea - why not update to 7.5 from 6.05 and guess what - its slow again painfully slow.
    Version 7.5 *****!

  • Workaround for slow Bridge when network drive is inaccessible?

    Hello all,
Hoping someone has some information regarding an issue I'm having with my workflow and Bridge. I have CS6 installed and am using the 64bit version of Bridge for file management. I work from 2 locations at the moment and have a portable drive that I take with me from place to place with my work files on it. In one location I can plug the drive directly into my system via USB, but in the other location (for various reasons) I have to plug it in elsewhere and access the drive through a network. This all works fine and I have no issues with getting to my files in general. Where I do get an issue however is when I start trying to add shorcuts to the drive within the "Favorites" menu in bridge.
The short of it is that as long as I have a shortcut to the networked drive in the Favorites menu, Bridge will run EXTREMELY slow when I am at the work location where I am accessing the drive directly. It appears that Bridge is trying to look for the networked drive on all the networked computers at that workplace every time I try to access a file or even use the menu system within Bridge (to right click a file for properties for example). I can alleviate the issue by removing the networked drive from my favorites or disconnecting form the internet (that one is not a practical option however), at which time Bridge stops trying to constantly look for the drive eveywhere and returns to normal speed.
This isn't a horrible issue for me, it just creaates a lot of repeat work of having to navigate to the network every time I open bridge again at the location where I access the drive remotely, or having to constantly re-add the networked drive back into the favorites every time... then having to remove it again before use at the other location and so on. Is there a way to adjust or change Bridge's behavior to basically tell it that if the specific drive isn't available after the first attempt to ignore it from then on unless I specfically click on the favorites link? Or in lieu of that, is there a way to have alternate "profiles" within Bridge that have seperate favorites etc. so that I can switch back and forth depending on the location I am at?
Like I said, not a horrible issue, but I really like having the quick, easy access to the drive that the favorite menu provides and would love to have a work around if one is possible. I realize that this setup is not common and so I might just have to deal, but if there is a super user solution or something I can tweak in a config file somewhere I would love to know! Thanks for the input and advice in advance!

Thanks for taking the time to respond guys! Yeah, I didn't think there would be any easy answer to this one. I actually have never had any issues running Bridge with any network I've been on with the exception of the lag when the network drive isn't present. Or to be more specific, severe lag when the networked drive is stored in favorites and then is absent in a situation where there is another different network of computers present. Don't know if it will help anyone who is trying to connet to a network drive etc. but all I do to get Bridge to "see" the network drive is navigate to the desired network drive or folder in Windows Explorer and then drag the drive or folder icon over from the Windows Explorer browser into my favorites area in Bridge. It drops the network link right into the favorites menu complete with a special network icon for the link. That has proven to be the fastest way for me to get a correct and functional connection to a network drive stored in Bridge. I was doing this with Bridge CS5 as well and it has always worked great for me.
For my network drive situation specifcally, I actually link to the entire drive as It's used solely for my design work. It's uniquely named with a title specific to me and my business so it definitely wouldn't be sharing a common name with any other drives or folders on another system on the network. I save the link to the network drive in my favorites and then I only ever have to click that to get to the root directory of the drive and navigate to whatever I need. Works great and super fast at the location where I need to use the network drive. Maybe I don't have hiccups like some because my computer has a reserved IP for that network tied to the MAC address of my computer so it is always the same IP every time.
The functionality I would like is actually very close in Bridge, with the only issue being that it insists on searching other computers on the network after every process it does if the network drive isn't present. The location I work at that doesn't use the network drive setup has 5 computers linked up to their network and so I guess it's scouring each of those every time I do any single thing in Bridge, looking for the long lost network drive lol! I have to confess this is strange behavior and really seems like a bug (albeit maybe a minor one due to the unusual workflow method) to me and Bridge is the only software I have that does this type of behavior. I can't really think of a good reason why you would need Bridge to look for a drive or folder in a location other than the one you have specified in the favorite path for it. I mean what if you have 2 copies of the same folder in different locations for backup purposes? You wouldn't want Bridge taking the initiative on it's own and accessing your backup folder without telling you,  especially if there are legacy versions of a file you wish to retain in the backup location.
If anyone ends up having a solution for this I would love to hear it! Otherwise I'll just have to hope that Adobe eventually buffs up the network functionality of Bridge down the road and in the meantime add and remove the favorites path all the time. I would think smooth network functionality would be increasingly needful and important however. I mean Adobe even offers a cloud service version of their software... That implies to me that they are aware that more and more work will be done "in the cloud" and over networked scenarios. I have my fingers crossed! Thanks again for the info guys!

  • Not responding when network drives present

    Hi,
We are experiencing an issue which more and more people in the company reports. This is regarding mapped drives and computers which are offline.
    Our setup:
We are mapping network drives through a GPO, using Create and Reconnect is not ticket on.
Clients with the issue is running Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.1 Update 1
    The issue:
When the client goes offline and the network drives aren't connected anymore. The save as function in all applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Notepad etc.) stops responding. The drives are still visible under This PC, but the file Explorer window will
also go into not responding if trying to disconnect or view properties on the Network drive.
    We have tried:
Change GPO settings = No change
    Use persistant = No change
Use powershell to map drives instead = No change
How did we verify the issue is related to Network drives:
We tried to disconnect the drives first and then go offline and then the save as function worked just fine in all applications.
We are desperate for some assistance on this issue and disconnecting the drives before going offline will Work as a temporary solution, but is definitely not a great solution in any way possible.

    Hi,
Based on my understanding, this should be related to the TCP retransmit mechanism, in short, TCP would
start a retransmission timer when each outbound segment is handed down to IP. If no acknowledgment has been received for the data in a given segment before the timer expires, the segment is retransmitted.
There are two values control the retransmit time:
TcpInitialRTT: Defines what the initial time-out settings are for new connections. This number in seconds is doubled each time it retransmits before timing a connection out. Defaults to 3.
TcpMaxDataRetransmissions: Determines how many times TCP retransmits an unacknowledged data segment on an existing connection. TCP retransmits data segments until they are acknowledged or until this value expires. Defaults to 5.
In general, the first retransmission was sent after about 3 seconds. The timer was then doubled for each of the retransmissions that followed. After the fifth retransmission, the timer was once again doubled. If no acknowledgment was received before it expired,
    the connection was aborted.

  • Whole system slows drastically when network drive is mounted

Firstly, I hope I'm asking this in the right place. (I've also asked under the MacBook section, but got no replies - sorry for duplicating the question).
I'm using a MacBook with Snow Leopard, a Time Capsule and a 1.5TB USB drive attached to the Time Capsule as a wireless network drive. Whenever the network drive is mounted, my whole computer runs intolerably slowly. Even if no program is actually using files from the network drive and the drive itself is silent and unused, my computer still crawls along agonizingly slowly. Yet if I plug the drive directly into the MacBook there's no problem whatsoever.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on and how I can cure the problem?
    In case it counts:
    MacBook: running OS 10.6.5, 2.2GHz, Intel Core 2 Duo, 1GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
    Network: 802.11n, WPA2 Personal.
Hard Disk: LaCie, 1.5TB USB 2.0
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

Thanks. Away on holiday right now, but will do it as soon as I get back next week.
Out of curiosity, the external drive works fine when connected directly via USB to the laptop. I took that to mean that the problem wasn't to do with the drive, but probably the network. Is it possible there could be a problem with the drive which only shows up when it's used as a network drive?

  • Excel slows down when network drive is mapped

Since a couple of months we are experiencing strange behaviour of excel (2011) on Lion 10.7.5
Excel versions from 14.3.1. to 14.3.4 all the same behaviour.
    Symptom 1)
When I connect the Time Capsule drive , Excel slows down by factor 100 when entering text. Needs up to 2 seconds to react on a key stroke.
When I disconnect the handle, excel works fast again.
    (repeatable, reproducible)
    Symptom 2)
on the network drive, always at the same place, a file named ~abcde.xls... occurs (exact name forgotten, but it is a recent file name
    preceded with a tilde sign)
deleting of the file does not affect speed
the file reappears occasionally (TC backup is switched off!)
    Where is the ghost??? :-D
    maybe these symptoms are uncorrelated.
Why the heck does Excel slow down when I open the network drive??
Why does this happen on 10.7.5 and not on 10.6.8?
    Anyone any idea?
    thanks,
    Stefan

  • Loosing Network Drive Connection

I have an extensive music and movie library that I have on a 2TB Buffalo Tech Network drive. Until recently this worked without problem.
Now it seems that the connection is timing out and I have to reconnect to it all the time. This is a pain! Its not the hard drive itself I have checked those settings. Its seems that the Mac is dropping or timing out the connection if there is no activity. Is there a work around for this>

    talked to apple support
    semi fixed the problem
currently it looks like they dont have a patch for when the computer goes to sleep and only way to access the HD after sleep is reset the airport
however if you eject the external disc before you standby you can log back in ok after you put computer to sleep
only issue is if you leave the computer and it falls asleep without manually disconnecting the drive
i suggest the more of us who let apple know of the issue they will get someone working on a patch

  • Changing Locations locks up PB when network drives are mounted

I have a bunch of different network locations and frequently bounce from one to the other (going to/from different offices). If I have a network drive mounted at, say, "home", then close the powerbook lid, go to an office, open it and switch to the "office" location, THEN relalize I forgot to unmount the drive and try to do so, I get a spinning beachball for several minutes. Anyone know a trick or a way around this. Is there some setting that shortens the timeout for disconnected drives? Thanks.

    Hi Geoffrey,
This won't be much help, but I'm having the exact same issue. I'm mounting AFP shares from a ReadyNAS, but I'm not using Bonjour Mounter. And this happens whether I script the volumes to mount, or if I mount them manually. For whatever reason, they dismount when I switch users, lock the screen, etc.
Have you tried mounting non-ReadyNAS volumes to see if the same issue occurs?  I'm curious.
Hope someone replies that can help. :-)
