"No System Fonts Available" when fonts are embedded

I'm a writer using LaTeX to produce PDFs. I recently started to use an editor who uses acrobat for editing.
I have sent him a PDF with all the fonts embedded [full fonts embedded, not just subsets], and the fonts show up that way on the "Fonts" tab of the properties box.
However, when he goes to edit it in acrobat, the error "No System Fonts Available" shows up.
Why is acrobat unable to edit a PDF that it fully admits has the fonts embedded?

Embedded fonts means the metrics for displaying the fonts is within the PDF but not the fonts themselves. This is also why cutting can pasting text with embedded fonts sometime results in little squared indicating an unknown or unmapped character for a given character code. You also do not have the embedded fonts available on your system.

  • Font Availability/Possible Font Conflict Problem

I have InDesign CS3 on a Windows XP SP3 machine with the following problem: I have a document I am reprinting for one of my clients and it uses Helvetica Neue Condensed Bold font. It seems that this font comes into conflict, probably due to its name, with Helvetica Neue Bold. If I delete the latter from the Windows\Fonts folder, then in all other Windows programs, the Condensed Bold font shows up. However, *it does not* show up in InDesign CS3. Furthermore, the latter thinks it still has access to the Bold font even after it has been removed from the Windows\Fonts folder. I assume this may be due to InDesign CS3 accessing fonts from elsewhere, but there is nothing in the "Fonts" folder for the main InDesign program folder. I would be very happy is someone can tell me what exactly is causing this font conflict problem, and how I can work around it.  But mainly, I need to know where InDesign informs the user about where it looks for fonts (I can't find anything like the specification in Distiller that restricts where it looks for Windows fonts). Any help would be *most* appreciated, as I need to get this out in the next two days and must leave town early Wednesday.

Fonts for Indesign can be stored in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS3\Fonts and they will only be accessible by Indesign.  I've had problems with different versions of Helvetica too, but only when they were from slightly different families, or a mixture of types.  Now I've got the whole set it works fine, you may have to experiment with your mix of fonts.  Bear in mind too that fonts display differently in the Indesign font list than they do in Word for example.

  • Detecting if all fonts are embedded

I'm looking for some ideas on how to solve a problem we have in accepting pdf.
We accept a user's pdf and we need to make sure that all fonts in the pdf are embedded.
If the pdf does not have all fonts embedded then the user should get a messsage telling him to embed all fonts.
The site is written in .net so I'm assuming that I have to create .dll using the adobe sdk.
Are there any other ways to solve this problem or any ideas that may be simpler to implement?

Acrobat can not be run on a server (or web site), which means that the Acrobat SDK is not an option for you.  There are, however, NUMEROUS companies that offer server-side preflight solutions (which is what you are looking for)

  • Why am I told that fonts are not available when the file was originally created in Fireworks?

I get the "Fonts not available" message when I open up a document, i.e. open up a png document in the program/computer/etc. where the program was created in the first place.
I don't get this. How can the fonts not be available when I'm using the same program that used these fonts originally? Having said that, the appearance doesn't seem to change.

Are the fonts in question installed on your computer?
Fonts are not part of a program, fonts are installed on a system. Once installed, a font is available to any program that uses fonts. If you're opening a document that was made in the same program, but on a different system, using fonts you do not have installed, then you will get that message.
So... Are you opening a document that you created? Are you opening the document on the same system on which the document was created? Have you made any changes to the installed fonts (installed or uninstalled any fonts)?
What version of Fireworks are you using and what OS are you running it on?

  • When fonts are packaged, do these fonts only link up to the one InDesign file that was packaged?

I often work with InDesign client files that are different "versions" of the same file (the only change between these InDesign files maybe be a location name, but the rest of the file is the same (fonts, links, etc). So I'll have an InDesign file named as A version, one as B version, etc. When I open the A version of the file and package it for the printer, are those fonts (Document fonts) available to that specific InDesign file only? If I copy the other versions of InDesign files into that folder for the printer (rather than package each individual InDesign file, will those other InDesign files link to the collected Document folder? Or will I have to package each file separately?

Thanks for replying Steve. A man who worked at a press, told me that InDesign files always pulled fonts from the same folder first. My coworker thinks it's only the InDesign file that fonts were packaged for. Now I don't know for sure what he meant and I don't have a way to contact him again.
More experimentation on my part will be required and more packaging of files. Our Creative dept has 3 designers and when we work on each others files, there's always font issues unless the fonts have been packaged for each file. And don't get me started on Helveticas! Between system fonts, fonts used over the years, clients providing fonts... it's been a problem we've yet to solve... everyone using the same Helvetica font family.
    Again, thanks Steve.

  • Font substitution when Embedding fonts

The font embedding controls in FFCore's Optimize component include the ability to upload and select a Font Substitution Configuration File: To recap the documentation:The Font Substitution Configuration File option defines the pdfToolbox configuration file that will be used when embedding fonts. This configuration file controls font substitution behavior in Optimize. Fonts are embedded as subsets. Fonts are not embedded if they have a flag indicating that embedding is not allowed. The Embed missing fonts fixup in pdfToolbox Desktop preflight profiles includes an option to select a Font substitution policy:   If you select the Open folder with configuration files you will see the text files that control font substitution. Although pdfToolbox Desktop comes with 3 predefined font substitution policies, additional ones can be created by duplicating an existing policy file and editing it (you will have to restart acrobat to see the changes).  The prefix on the filname controls the display order of the font policies within pdfToolbox. I would also ensure there are no spaces in any new filenames. The font substitution policies are plain text files with the following content: DisplayName 1 My Special Name SubstituteAll<tab>Arial<tab>Helvetica<tab>Helvetica Neue<tab>Futura<tab>Helvetica Neue<tab>Microsoft Sans Serif<tab>MS PGothic<tab>Trebuchet MS<tab>Verdana
    SubstituteFirst<tab>Arial Bold<tab>Arial-Bold<tab>Helvetica Bold<tab>Futura-Bold<tab>Futura Bold<tab>Helvetica-Bold
The DisplayName defines the name that will appear in the pdfToolbox UI: The remaining lines specify which fonts may be substituted by which fonts and the precedence for substitution.SubstituteAll - all fonts in the list are substituted for each other. When a font is missing pdfToolbox will work down the list until it reaches the name of an available font.SubstituteFirst - only the first font in the list is substituted. pdfToolbox will work down the list until it reaches the name of an available font. Note: the font names must match what pdfToolbox will find. The best way to ascertain that is to run a preflight on the file and copy the names off the report.  UPDATE - Updated example text to show location of tabs

I added a new topic to the forum covering font substitution: http://forum.support.xerox.com/t5/FreeFlow-Core/Font-substitution-when-Embedding-fonts/td-p/177411

  • Why are fonts available only to one user on computer?

My husband and I use the same iMac - same software versions, same OS, etc. However, I seem to have fonts available to me in Pages which he does NOT have.
How come? How do I fix this? He needs access to the same font options as I have.

Patsy that is what user accounts are for, to keep some things separate. In this case you have installed the fonts for only one user.
Put them in the Fonts folder of the System Library that is at the top of your hard drive to make them available to everyone.

  • Hello. I am trying to self host Italia fonts (Book, Bold and Medium) on Adobe Muse. I purchased web fonts from Linotype that are "obfuscated" - which means the name is hidden. Apparently I also need to install system fonts. Can I install with code in muse

Hello! I am trying to self host Italia fonts in muse. I purchased from Linotype the web fonts. But they sent obfuscated fonts and code. I need to also install as system fonts and those do not work for that. We already have different Italia fonts that we owned prior but they are not obfuscated... Is this a problem? Is there an easier way I can do this? TIA!

    Abhishek,
Thank you for the reply. Wanted to comment on a few things.
I reviewed the other post that you've referenced. Nothing unusual jumped out at me as something that I was not aware of. I'm running an older iMac that is in good working condition. 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 24" screen. I know this issue is fleeting, as I stated earlier typically can be corrected with a restart of the CC Desktop application (that I am always running at startup). I have not been able to determine that shutting down Muse corrects the issue. I would, at this time say it doesn't.
I did open InDesign and see if the fonts in question, Open Sans and Open Sans Condensed, were present and usable. They were. The fonts are shown as being synched in my CC Desktop app window (even if they are not "installed" in Muse). That is expected but it may be a bug in how Muse brings in a font from those that are already synched to your CC account. I don't know enough about how that works to comment.
And just to complicate matters, Muse seems to be working again, the fonts that is. I brought them back in and they are showing up in all locations (which there are actually three - see screen shots).
First is primary text menu dropdown (to right of orange "Text").
Second is if you click orange Text link. Another drop down menu appears.
And lastly, the Text Panel to right of screen.
I also wanted to add this extra bit of information, for what it is worth. When the issue arises and you do not get the sub-menu dropdown showing various styles of the font (italics, bold, etc.), one can use click on the missing font if you had used it previously and it is present in the "previously used font" list.
    Cheers!

  • Font Book on/off is confused (thinking fonts are off when they are on)

So my Font Book activates and deactivates font properly and other apps react accordingly.
Problem is the On/Off label next to each font inside Font Book. Font Book is completely ignoring the correct statues of each font. So it is stuck on a specific label. If a font is deactivated, and I try to activate, it works fine, BUT the label is stuck displaying 'OFF' instead of turning into 'ON'.
This seemed like a small issue, until i needed to deactivate a font that says 'OFF'! now I am stuck, since right clicking on it says 'Activate family' while it should say 'Deactive family'! Font book thinks its deactivated while in reality its activated!
i can activate but not deactivate since the labels are wrong and font book is confused!
Here are the things that i already tried: restart, check for damaged fonts, repair permissions, run iTools, run disk utility, deleting font book preferences.
Only thing that I have not tried is deleting all fonts, rebooting font book and doing everything again. (i have around 3100 fonts)
how do i resolve this? anyone else encountering this problem?

so after much research, trial and errors and several backups later:
Trashed the fb.db file in my ~Users > Gaith > Library > Application Support > Font Book folder.

  • WMF format equations available/missing fonts not displayed/alerted

WMF format equations fonts are not displayed in the applications, If any fonts used on that equations is missing in the system the indesign will not show/alert any missing font warring to the user and the substitute fonts replaced automatically for the missing fonts, Because of this the output PDF comes with wrong fonts. How to fix the equation font missing issue in Indesign.
    Your suggestions are welcome.
    Required Details
    Indesign CS5.5
    OC - Windows XMP
    Equation Software : Math type
    Format: WMF

Best practice would be not to use WMF at all in InDesign.
WMF cannot embedd fonts, so the second best practice would be to use a WMF without live text.
Best would be to use ai or pdf files.
What other format can Math Type export?
// I did have a look on Softonic's web site. They write that Math Type can export EPS. Use that!
/// If you have also font embedding problems with EPS take care that you use fonts which allow embedding (not every font does) and put the EPS in the Distiller with some kind of setting without color conversion and make a PDF of it, then use this PDF. The PDF should be dcreated on a computer with the same fonts available which you have used with Math Type.

  • Fonts available for use in books

I made a book in which I used a bit of a Japanese font. (I changed the font choice for the text box on that page). After much discussion with printservices, they said that the font needs to be "embedded" to print properly. Only the following fonts can be used freely:
    Baskerville
    Brush Script
    Century Gothic
    Gill Sans
    Helvetica
    Helvetica Neue
    Markerfelt
    Papyrus
Is it possible to embed the font with Aperture tools?
I did a work-around by using an image of the page with the font on it, but I'd like to know the answer.
    Thanks.

    1) How does one check the licensing rights for a font?
For Adobe Type 1 products you have to have the licence agreement at hand, because the font program dictionary itself has no mechanism with with the type manufacturer can set embedding to off, to on with permission to print or to on with permission to extract for editing.
For any and all products that fall under the TrueType Specification version 1.0 of 1990 and later (Apple and Microsoft simple TrueType 1, Apple Advanced Typography and Microsoft OpenType, the font file itself has a mechanism that determines what you are allowed to do.
    2) How does one embed a font in Aperture? or Adobe Acrobat Professional (I own the Adobe CS2 suite)?
When you work in e.g. Aperture or Pages, the assumption is that you have permission to install the font file on your machine and render the glyph designs to your display and printer.
It is when you want to share the glyph designs that licencing sets limits, and you share the glyph designs by saving them into a page description language such as PDF.
Technically, Aperture or Pages will run through the list of font files you have used, subset the tables of the TrueType Specification to save space, and embed the stream in the PDF printing master.
If in the process of parsing the tables of the Specification the system finds a font file that does not permit embedding for printing, then the system should flag you.
If the system does not flag you that embedding is disallowed for font file XXX, then you are in the clear legally - but not for Adobe Type 1, see above.
If you ZIP archive or SIT archive a font file family and send to a friend for installation on her system, then the first assumption above is broken and you are not clear legally.
For as long as I have written prepress copy the people making type have been complaining bitterly about theft. Type was the first object of theft in order to support the introduction of graphic information processing with WYSIWYG display rendering and print rendering.
