No System Sound/Audio after updating to 10.6.2

After doing a system update to Snow Leopard 10.6.2 I've lost all system sound excluding—strangely—iChat, which still does notification pings. I don't even get the familiar "click-clack" sound when changing the volume from my keyboard.
The speakers are fine, as I can hear the iChat pings and the start-up tone. Just baffled as to what the problem could be. Any suggestions would be incredibly helpful.
Other information: I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 on a 24" iMac circa late 2007/early 2008.

I too am having this problem unless I resort to plugging in my external speakers which I don't want to use when I am not at home. I am not being given the option to switch to internal speakers oddly, please help!!!!!!!!
Another Problem: Time Machine: I am unable to restore anything now. 10.6.2 has a bug alright, this is preventing me from restoring anything on time machine back to any date on there. =/

  • Applications can no longer play audio after update | VAIO VPCCW21FX

I'll make this as quick, clean, and to the point as possible. Also, please forgive me because I haven't used Arch in over 3 years, so a lot of things are different.
    - I am on a Sony VAIO VPCCW21FX.
    - I installed using the AUI script (which is absolutely wonderful, I might add).
    - I am using Gnome 3 as my desktop environment.
    - I can hear system sounds out of my speakers and headphones, but no applications appear to produce sound.
    - This started a couple of days ago after a system update.
    - ALSA and Pulse seem to be set up properly.
    - Alsamixer shows my sound card and allows me to configure output/input.
    - PulseAudio Volume Control also shows my card, and allows me to configure output/input.
    - Gstreamer and it's dependencies and codecs are installed.
    - Mplayer and it's dependencies and codecs are installed.
Here is the output of lspci -v | grep -A7 -i "audio":

And yes, the CLI speaker test that plays white noise works.
It seems to be a codec issue to me, but I have no idea what codecs would be conflicting with each other. If anyone knows of a remedy, or can point me in a general direction, I would be very grateful. Thank you.

  • MacBook OSX 10.6.5 No audio after update

Hello, My aluminum 13" MacBook has been fine up until a few weeks ago. The internal speakers do not work after Mac OSX 10.6.5 boots up. I hear the 'gong' on initial start up... but no audio after OSX boots. I have tried plugging in headphones, using a toothpick- nothing works. The sound preferences show 'Internal Speakers' and Built in.
Another interesting fact is iTunes reports "an unknown error occurred -200". Very helpful message.
If I boot into Windows Vista using BootCamp.. audio works just fine. So, the speakers and audio hardware are not malfunctioning. It's clearly an OSX configuration problem.
Any ideas on what I can do to get my audio back? The only thing that has changed was I let Apple Updater install a few patches.

If you have not already done so, run Disk Utility's "Verify Disk" & "Repair Permissions" routines on your startup drive (in that order). If the verify disk step finds any problems, you must correct them before continuing.
Try creating a new, temporary user account. Restart your Mac, logging into that account only. If the speakers now work then something associated with your normal user account is the problem, such as a login item or bad preference file.
If the speakers still don't work with this account, you can delete it. Then try starting up in Safe Mode. If the speakers now work something that Safe Mode disables is the culprit, such as a third party or non-essential extension, an add-on system modifier, startup item, etc.
If none of the above help, try downloading & installing the 10.5.6 combo update. If that doesn't help then you may need to reinstall the OS & update it to the current version.

  • HDMI sound error after updating to 10.8.5

    Hi everyone,
Im using the latest mac mini with 2.3 quad-core ML version 10.8.5 and a small LCD TV as a screen. Low frame rate killing my eyes but that's my only option for now.
Now the problem: after updating my mac, when I boot it up, sound is fine. After waking up from sleep, it's gone. It has to be the update because I did not make any other significant changes.
It's not urgent but it would be great if someone knew the solution.
    Thanks

Updates typically trigger issues with Digital sound that are best resolved through the Audio Midi Setup tool under Applications -> Utilities.  Sometimes zapping the PRAM can also help a newer machine such as yours.  If you have an older machine than 4 years, don't zap it before checking the PRAM battery, which is separate from any battery that lets you run off the mains on a notebook Mac.

  • Very Low Audio after Updating iPod wVideo 60 GB

After updating to latest software for iPod with video 60 GB, the audio on all of my songs is extremely low. I have to turn the volume nearly to max to hear at a modest level. I also get Zero bass now.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks!

Thanks dude for the help, that's a very useful tip for many reasons.
It didn't resolve my problem and then I recalled that I have another set of headpones from my old iRiver. I plug those headphones (which were used excessively for 2 years) and my sound is instantly back.
Basically, iPod headphones (that I have had since November 2005) are totally shot. They are absolute crapola. Geeze, they might as well sell the **** things without headphones, just go straight to after-market set.

  • System sounds (alarms), Bios update and Linux

    Hello
Sory for my very bad English
I have a Lenovo 3000 G530, under Linux (Mandriva 2010 X86_64), and it works fine. My only "problem" is the system sound of charge battery (beep when plug/unplug adapter).... It's not a minor problem : there are many circumstances where we want to be silent .... and these sounds are horrible.
One issue to resolve this problem is to correct it in the Bios settings. But in my Bios, no options for that. On the other hand, I've found an update Bios (http://consumersupport.lenovo.com/en/DriversDownloads/drivers_show_1350.html#) 0CCN52WW version (I actualy use 0CCN48WW).
    So
1 Can somebody tell me if the 0CCN52WW Biosmakes possible to disable system sounds alarms ? Before flashing Bios, I want to be sure this will solve the problem ...
2 This Bios can create other problems ?
3 Is there a method to flash without using Windows (creating bootable CD) ?
    Thank you

  • Secunia reports Adobe Reader version 9.1.2.82 on system is insecure after updating to 9.1.3

I updated Reader to version 9.1.3 using the update program file. The previous version was 9.1.2. Reader Help/About now reports it as being version 9.1.3 as expected. After  updating Reasder Secunia reports Reader as insecure and version detected as 9.1.2.82  and C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe as location. When  check the properties for the file AcroRd32.exe it shows as being version 9.1.0.163. The file AcroRd32.dll does have a version of 9.1.2.82. I cannot find a file with a version of 9.1.3. The most recent date modified is one file with a date of 7/22/09 and the next earliest is 5/21/09.

    Vista x64 ultimate

I've been seeing the same thing, but I'm not worried, as I know I have the latest Reader installed.
But I have no idea where Secunia (PSI) is getting that version number '9.1.2.82' from...

After restart, there is no sound. I went to the system preferences, and there's no audio device. I downloaded the combo update from the apple site and it also failed, this is what i got after trying 4 times.
Same thing happened with my 10.8.3 update, since then, my wifi hasnt been working, i'm stuck with the cable now and i cant afford to backup everything and have a fresh OSX installation. Please help me with my sound and wifi, i really need the sound badly, i make music, Pleeease help

You really need to have at least 2 backups as you are risking losing all your data.
First check to see what version of 10.8 you have installed.  menu/About this Mac.
You can reinstall the OS from the Recovery Volume and it shouldn't affect your data files. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart) or hold down the option key during a restart and select Recovery Volume. Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions. Then reinstall the OS.

  • Sound gone after update - no such file or directory

I updated my mythtv machine tonight, sound is gone.  I get an arts informational message that "device: default can't be opened for  playback (no such file or directory)
Sound was working fine before the upgrade.
I got some alsa errors right after upgrade, just before the logon screen, but couldn't locate them in any log.  I reran alsaconf and it seemed to set up fine.  Running alsamixer gives me just one column, (playback) rather than the multiple mixer columns I had previously.  alsactl store does not save the setting I put in here.
The upgrades included ivtv-utils; there was something about using jack as a control; I'm still trying to figure out exactly what jack is and how it might fit into all of this, but I downloaded and ran qjackctl, it failed with error messages.

I'm not an expert, but I do have experience with the cx88xx cards and sound. Mine is an NVidia force 2 board, but I believe it still uses the snd-intel module.
Do you get sound in any other applications besides myth?

  • Total Sound Loss After Update

My computer is completely silent after the most recent update (and was working immediately prior to it). I can't get sound out of Firefox, iTunes or even various games on my computer.
Not sure what specs I need to provide. If someone could let me know I'll be right on it.

Hi, after reviewing your screenshot, there are some Flash files for IE that are missing and also for FF.
Download the Uninstaller to your Desktop:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html
Then download the Flash Player Installer for Internet Explorer to your Desktop:
    http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player_ax.exe
Then download the Flash Player Installer for Firefox to your Desktop:
    http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player.exe
After you have done that, be sure to follow the instructions on the Uninstaller. Use the Administrator account, disable any apps that use Flash, check the system tray for messenger service, etc. Set the Security via Internet Option to Medium for the Internet Zone.
Close all browsers, Run the Installer from the Desktop. When finished, Reboot(restart) your computer. When fully Rebooted, Reboot again( to clear old files) Then Run the Installer for IE and when finished, Run the Installer for Firefox.
When finished, Reboot the computer Once.
    Test each browser here:
    http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/
Check a few websites to see if Flash Player is now working properly with each browser.
Let me know, if you have any questions.

  • 50L3400U-No video, only audio after update

Last week, an update froze, and my wife was unable to turn the tv off using the remote.  After unplugging, and replugging, the update went through.  Since then, our Motorola cable tv box will not display video, but the audio works.  I tried different HDMI cables, and shuffling between the 3 HDMI ports on the tv to no avail.  The other two devices connected through HDMI (roku 3, and Sony DVD player) both work just fine on all HDMI ports.
The video from the cable box will work if I do a reset.  Video will work until I turn the tv off, and then it won't work anymore.  Attempts to update only lead to the installation of Samba, and then video does not work anymore.
I'd like to be able to just turn the tv on and use it, instead of having to do a reset every time.  Any ideas?

Unfortunately, it sounds like it may require servicing. You should call customer support.
