No tabs are showing when only one window open. How do I open a new tab?

Just upgraded to latest version. When only one window is open, no tabs show across the top. If I have two tabs open, both show across the top, but go to no tabs if I close one of them. And, the + sign is available for opening a third tab if at least two are open. The only way I can find to open a new tab when only one window is currently open is to turn off the menu, click the orange Firefox drop-down, and click New Tab. Why isn't it showing a tab, and a + tab (to open a new one) when only one tab (window) is open.

Thanks everyone for the quick responses. Cntl + T works fine, and I did move the + window to the nav bar, which also works well.
I had already gone into options and checked the box for always showing the tab bar, but it doesn't show it. I even unchecked it, saved the settings, the rechecked and saved the settings. Doesn't seems to make any difference.
I'm okay with it not showing a tab when I only have one open, just so I can get to a new one easily when I want it.

• How do I turn off the tab bar in FF 24 when only one window is open?

I have just updated to FF 24.0 from FF 20 with Tab Mix Plus already installed. (OSX 10.6.8) From the Firefox Preferences menu, Tabs box, I have set the "Hide the tab bar:" option to "When I have only one tab." I have also gone to the Tab Mix Plus option box and set the drop down to the same value. Unfortunately, it doesn't have the desired effect. Firefox opens to my home page with a tab at the bottom. (I prefer the tabs at the bottom and that setting still works.) With only one page open, that tab is completely unnecessary, takes up space, and just plain bugs me.
Now, here's what I have found. Once I've started Firefox, if I go to the Tab Mix Plus options box and select "Hide the tab bar: Always" and then set the option back to "When I have only one tab" I can enjoy one page without the tab bar, that is, until I've opened several tabs and then closed all but one. Then I see the tab bar stubbornly remain. An incompatibility between FF and Tab Mix Plus, perhaps. Is FF 24 not letting Tab Mix see the number of open tabs? Dunno. But I can't seem to solve it.

Are you saying that the problem lies not with Firefox but with Tab Mix Plus? Tab Mix worked up through FF 20 to my knowlege. And I see from other questions that the persistant tab bar was an issue with FF 23 as well.
Please note, that setting aside the extension issue, the Firefox preference Tab option should turn off the tab option when there is only one window open without any help from addons or extensions. I have disabled Tab Mix Plus, and set the FF option correctly, but the problem remains. As I see it, FF is not working as this user expects it to and is (slightly) broken.

• Up until today I could use tabbed browsing. When I go to click on the + sign for a new tab nothing happens. I have gone through everything. Why isn't this working?

Also I have right clicked to get the add new tab and nothing happens.

Do you have that problem when running in the Firefox SafeMode?
• How do I make a new tab open all the say to the right, as it used to, instead of just to the LEFT of the last tab?

I have 6 tabs set up and have become very accustomed to the position they’re in. When doing a specific task for my job, a 7th tab opens up. It has always opened all the way to the right. When I’m done reading the information it gives me, I just quickly “x” it out to return working. Yesterday I noticed that this 7th tab was not opening up all the way to the right. It was opening in the next-to-last position to the right. This might not seem like a problem, but when I go to close it, I’m so used to x-ing out the one to the far right, that I’ve been x-ing out a tab that I need.
So the question: How can I get the new tab that opens to appear all the way on the right again? Again, this is not adding a new tab. If I add a new tab to search for something, it does open all the way to the right.
== I rebooted my computer a few days ago...

Type '''about:config''' in the URL bar and hit Enter.
''If you see the warning, you can confirm that you want to access that page.''
Filter = '''browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent'''
Double-click that preference to change the value to '''''false'''''

Uninstall the Ask toolbar and it should work again. There is a compatibility issue with the Ask toolbar and Firefox that prevents new tabs from being opened.
There are a couple of places to check for the Ask toolbar:
* Check the Windows Control panel for the Ask Toolbar - http://about.ask.com/apn/toolbar/docs/default/faq/en/ff/index.html#na4
* Also check your list of extensions, you may be able to uninstall it from there - https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Uninstalling+add-ons

• Firefox 23.0 doesn't warn me when closing multiple tabs, unless only one window is open.

I've selected the option for Firefox 23.0 to warn me before I try closing windows with multiple tabs. If only one window is open and that window has multiple tabs, I receive the warning. If more than one window is open and multiple tabs are open in any or all of them, the warning doesn't appear until I get to the final open window.

hello, the message is only there by design if you close the whole browser with still a few tabs open in it (and also only when you choose not to store browser history). if you want to restore one of multiple windows closed during a session you can do so from the history menu or the keyboard shortcut ctrl+shift+N.

• I am no longer able to use a keyboard shortcut to close a window when there is only one window open.

I can use Command+W when there are multiple tabs open to close one window at a time, but not when there is only one window remaining. It's driving me crazy because I have to click on the red dot. It won't close with File > Close either. Nothing changed (that I know of) from last week to this that would cause this. It works fine in safe mode but I can't figure out what's conflicting. Also, I've tried reinstalling Firefox but that did nothing. Help?

Problem solved! It's the Evernote add-on. They updated something on November 6. I've disabled it until that quirk is fixed. Thanks.

• When pressing Ctrl+f to find something in a page the Find box remains open until I close it, in ALL tabs I have in the firefox window. How can I make firefox open the Find box ONLY in the tab I am in?

When pressing Ctrl+f to find something in a page the Find box remains open until I close it, in ALL tabs I have in the firefox window. How can I make firefox open the Find box ONLY in the tab I am in?

Firefox 4 and later versions save the previous session automatically, so there is no longer need for the dialog asking if you want to save the current session.
Use "File > Exit" or "Firefox > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit Firefox") if you want to restore multiple windows.
You can use "History > Restore Previous Session" to get the previous session at any time.
You may need to click the orange/gray Firefox button to see History.
There is also a "Restore Previous Session" button on the default about:home Home page.
Another possibility is to use:
* [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Menu_differences Firefox/Tools > Options] > General > Startup: "When Firefox Starts": "Show my windows and tabs from last time"

When I try to open Firefox, window pops up saying "Close Firefox" and, "A copy of Firefox is already open. Only one copy of Firefox can be open at a time."

• When I want to close only one window it closes all of them. How do I close just one.

I only want to close one window. How can I do this without closing them all. But for this, I would use Mozilla all the time.
Thanks, Joyce

You do not mention what your Operating System is. You should be able to close only one firefox window, and then finally exit from firefox as a whole by using Firefox Button -> exit.
Also or alternatively consider use [[tabbed browsing]].

• I am using a MacBook Pro and when I open a new tab in Firefox it opens to Trovi. Mozilla has a forum but solutions are all for the PC/Windows. How do I remove it?

I am using a OSX MacBook Pro running Mavericks version 10.9.4 and using Firefox 30.0. My Mac has recently been hijacked by a program called "Trovi". Whenever I open a blank new tab in Firefox the tab opens it opens with Trovi. The Mozilla forums offer support but all solutions are for users who run Windows. How do I remove Trovi from my Mac? Please help.

Hey there! I answered this in another post a moment ago, this may be extremely helpful...I had the same problem until very recently with Trovi.

• Dozens of open tabs lost! Synced them, reinstalled Windows and Firefox, set up Sync, looked up "tabs on other devices" in history - Only a third or so listed.

Dozens of open tabs lost! Synced them, reinstalled Windows and Firefox, set up Sync, looked up "tabs on other devices" in history -> Only a third or so listed.
Usually, when I reinstall Windows, I manually backup my Firefox bookmarks and open tabs, but because Sync has worked perfectly for me in the past, I didn't do it this time. I backed up all my other files and settings and whatnot from the rest of my system, then in Firefox I hit the Sync button (put in on the GUI so I see if it's syncing or done) for the last time, waited until the green rotating dot was gone, closed Firefox, shut down the system, formatted the drive and reinstalled Windows and Firefox. After setting up Sync I waited a while to make sure everything is on my system.
Then I wanted to have all the tabs and windows open as I had on the old system, so I went to the history and "tabs on other devices". I could already see from the small size of the list, that tabs were missing. I went through all of them, opened them and sorted them into windows.
-> Maybe about two thirds of the tabs I had open on my old system are gone!
Not just new tabs that might not have been synced (although the button showed sync was complete), but also old tabs (from weeks ago) that must have been synced before. Actually maybe especially or even only the old ones are lost. And the lost tabs are not just from one of the open windows, but from several.
What can I do to recover my lost tabs?
They contain important websites that I didn't bookmark yet, articles that I wanted to read, windows with dozens of tabs on a topic that I did some research for and stuff like that.
What does the green circle mean? Does it indicate that the sync is complete (to the Firefox servers) or just that the changes have been saved locally and set up for some next scheduled sync with the Firefox servers?
Further info:
I always run the newest stable release of Firefox (v19 on both systems). Old system was Windows 8 Enterprise Evaluation, new system is Windows 8 Pro. My used Sync quota is about 10 MB. I had 4 Firefox windows open with different amount of tabs in each of them, from 10 to maybe 80 with an overall amount of 150-200. Most of them weren't loaded. Firefox start is set to "load last session" and tabs are set to "load when selected". Memory usage 500 MB - 1 GB.

I have most of the items bookmarked. Having 200 - 300 tabs open saves time, since I don't have to go to the bookmarks, if the tabs are already open. One problem has been crashes, but as long as I can restore a previous session, I can still get to the data. I had quite a few tabs open when I was planning to purchase a new computer. I also follow the stock market, and the weather. I was also looking at various VIrtual Private Networking (VPN) sites. At one time, I probably had 20 - 50 tabs open, just for those. I did bookmark a few, but unfortunately lost the VPN tabs, when Firefox crashed. Even if I don`t go to a particular group of tabs very often, leaving it open is faster, especially since I will know where they are. I often put the computer in standby mode, rather than shutting it off, especially if I will remain in the same location.

When I try and launch Firefox, I get this error message >A copy of Firefox is already open. I thought if I were to completely uninstall and re install it might help, but I cannot seem to find instructions to do this....

See [[Firefox is already running but is not responding]], the image shown in that article is the Windows equivalent of the error message that you are receiving, but the information relates to the Mac.
