No text in drop down menus!

My computer seems to be working fine except that the drop down menus show no text. In any application. I can't shutdown my computer because just empty boxes show up under the apple icon, "File" "Edit" etc.
I have restarted my computer three times and this problem has continued.
It started when I was listening to iTunes and checking my gmail when all of a sudden iTunes stopped, shutdown, and an alert box appeared with an orange triangle with an exclamation point in it, and three buttons. Only problem was there were no words in the box! And no words on the buttons. I clicked the blinking blue button, and iTunes restarted. I decided to restart my computer and discovered there were no words in the drop down portions of the menu bar. Any alertboxes that appear too, have no words in them, and I have to guess at what each button means.
Please help!!

If the symptoms you state exist also while booted from the Installer Disc,
the problem may be more than a font. Since the system would be by-passed
completely and you'd be running from the booted installer disc media, the
menubars should work fine. You could run Disk Utility from the optical disc
(first disc of OSX install is bootable) and by holding the C key down all the
while you wait. With OSX 10.4, you get a fairly good Disk Utility and you
can run it to see if a "repair disk" cycle would show you any error messages
and then re-run the repair to see if it can be fixed.
The issue may just be a permissions issue and lack of routine
maintenance; unless the corruption is beyond basic repairs and
outside of what Disk Warrior, Drive Genius, or TechTool can do.
I'd try the OSX bootable installer's Disk Utility, first. A low-level
error or corruption on the hard drive may require starting over
from scratch; and D.U. can be used to start over.
If it is just a main user account issue, and if you can't use the
Admin account to make a second user account with Admin
privileges, you may have to do a system-wide restore; and
use the Installer to "archive and install" a new system to
check and see if that gives you all the menus. The whole thing
no matter which of the ways suggested, isn't that hard to try
and troubleshoot. The means to fix it are already at hand;
easier still if you don't care if you lose what's on the hard drive.
You may need to see what extent this situation exists and then maybe
plan on buying a third party disk utility to see if it can fix the problems, or
just plan on totally erasing the hard drive and use the booted disk utility to
zero the hard drive and reformat it, and do an all new installation from there.
And lose all your stuff saved on the hard drive. This is the last choice;
and if you did not back up your stuff to some other drive or media, it
would be lost. But this could make your Mac run like new again.

  • How can I correct the problems I've been experiencing lately  with drop-down menus in general as well as and leading of text. It 's occurring  on both Safari and Firefox browsers.

The above headline pretty much covers the problems.
Access to the drop down menus is erratic.  Sometimes it's problem-free, but at other times it's impossible to see the options on the menu, or if they are visible, it's impossible to effect a change by clicking on one of them.  The times I notice it most is when I am trying to change fonts or font sizes, but  it occurs at other times, as well.
It's also frustrating to have to deal with double spacing (for example, when describing items on eBay).  Sometimes the text flows  normally,  but if I force a  return, the text that follows usually is double-spaced.
Often,  the justification option does not work either.
Occasionally, I can  get around one problem or another by switching back and forth between Safari and  Firefox, but eventually, the original problem resurfaces.
Because it happens on both browsers,  eBay tech support is inclined to think the problem is in my software. (I'm inclined to agree.)
Although they have suggested clearing  the history in FF, that option must have been relocated, because  it'sno longer under the "Tools"  menu, where it was  in the past. I also can't find  the clear  your cache option on OS Safari or 10.8.3.

I don't think it'd help much but clearing history is now in the History menu, and setting FF to clear history on exit is near the bottom of the Privacy tab of FF Preferences.
Also, if you don't have the Develop menu in Safari, open Safari preferences, click Advanced, and select “Show Develop menu in menu bar.” You'll find "Empty Caches" there.

  • Lost all the text in my drop down menus

All of a sudden I do not see any text in my drop down menus or on pop-ups. I tried to open Safari and got the pop up menu with a yellow triangle with a black exclamation point in it. It also had the three buttons at the bottom - one was blue - but no words.
I can open Firefox but not Safari. I can open the System Preferences widget but all I see are the icons, not the names of the choices. No matter what application is open I do not see any words in the dropdown menu.
First I tried zapping the PRAM. Didn't work. Then I booted from the startup disk and ran the disk repair utility, it repaired several things, but I'm still having the problem.
The font on my menu bar has changed too.
I installed x11 two days ago - not from the startup disk but from a website a friend helped me find when I didn't have my disk with me. I also installed Open Office. Should I uninstall those?
Is it possible I got a virus?? I have no clue how to deal with a virus on a Mac. I haven't had any trouble with my iBook since I got it in November 2005, and I don't know any tricks.

    hi Rina!
my apologies, i'm guessing from your name that you might be from a non-english-speaking location ... if so, check to see if this is an issue for you (also see other posts in the thread):

  • Drop-down menus text on white background instead of blue

I installed Firefox 9.0.1 on a new PC running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.
The selected option on the drop-down menus consists of black text surrounded by a thin blue border on a white background. This makes it difficult to see. On the old machine and on my laptop, this [selected option] text appears on a light blue background which is easier to see.
Has something gone wrong in the installation process? Everything else in Firefox appears to be working as before.
Is there a way of getting back the blue background on the selected option of a drop-down menu?
    Thank you.

I had this problem. Disabling adblock plus 1.2.2 resolves it. (tools / ad ons)
Now I have to have adverts, or no Guardian. Tricky choice!

  • My Drop Down Menus Do Not Work Properly in IE

Hey. I'm really stuck and have been for over a week. Let me preface this by telling you I didn't build our website and have little knowledge of spry and spry assets. I can't the get the gentleman that built our site to help and I'm desperate!
The site - www.ncsoccer.org , has drop down menus. They work fine in Chrome, FF and Live Preview (DW CS4). But in IE8, they do not.
I had to revise the drop downs (changing names and removing some drop downs - I've done this with no problem before). When I uploaded the index page and the template pages, the error started.
In addition, the people in my office that use Contribute to update their sections, cannot access anything but our index page and I don't know what (if anything) I've done wrong, as everything worked fine before the menu revision.
I'm including the 'sprymenubarhorizontal.css" code below. Maybe you can see something that isn't right.
Thanks for any insight or suggestions. Remember, asking me to create to create sprys or widgets or something like that may be over my head! Try to dumb it down for me!
    Thanks.

  • Why are drop down menus on webpages in Safari no longer working? I have iphone4 ios6.0.1. Is there a fix?

Since I updated to 6.0, the drop down menus on the web pages I use in Safari on my iphone 4 are no longer working.  The drop down appears and then quickly disappears so that you can't select anything.  Is there a fix?  One example is http://www.scvavolleyball.org/  I need to select Juniors>Girls>Weekend Sites but I can't on my phone....but I used to be able to....and I still can on my ipod touch.  Help.

The current release supports the white-space property for a text area and it is possible that the website uses white-space: pre instead of white-space: pre-wrap.
The former will prevent Firefox from wrapping the text.
You can check that in the Inspector via the right-click context menu.
    See:
<blockquote>The white-space property is now working on <textarea> HTML elements (bug 82711).</blockquote>

  • DW-MX-04 Drop-down menus won't work.

I'm using Dreamweaver MX 2004 (have been for several years, so I know my way around it).  I want to create drop-down or fly-outs menu's to consolidate page links into categores in order to reduce the number of link tabs I have on each page.  I've been able to create the menu's I needed (using: Tag Chooser\ Behaviors\ Show Pop-U Menu), but when I preview the pages in IE, the text only shows on the mouseover text (not on top) despite having the text color set as black in the Menu window.  But it gets worse.  When I uploaded the page to try it, the drop down menus don't show up at all when I hover over the main buttons and  I get javascript errors.
Can anyone give me so assistance on how to resolve this?
I've checked the text color issue using the code view editing pane, and it matches the way I have it setup in the Pop-Up Menu.  But that's the least of my worries if I can't get them to work at all when the pages are live.
    Thanks...JEB

MX2004 software is also somewhat antiquated and no longer supported by Adobe.   So it shouldn't surprise you that the tools from nearly a decade ago are obsolete today.  The web itself has changed significantly since 2004!
Web standards have moved from HTML3 to HTML5.  Layouts have departed from old school nested tables to more efficient CSS.  Unlike a decade ago, today's web devices include everything from hand held smartphones & tablets to laptops, desktops and TV displays.  So it's not possible to stand still and keep pace with the evolving web.  If you're not moving forward, you're falling behind.
CSS is not an extension.  HTML = content.  CSS = Cascading Style Sheets.  CSS is used to style your content.    With CSS you can make an ordinary list look like a very cool menu with buttons, borders, shadows, drop-down and rollover effects.  If you master CSS, you can do some very creative things with it.  However, coding skills are essential.
Below is an example of an unordered list styled with CSS to make a nice horizontal drop-menu.
    http://alt-web.com/DEMOS/CSS-Multi-colored-drop-menu.shtml
To further illustrate the efficiency and power of CSS, look at CSS Zen Garden.
    http://www.csszengarden.com/
Every page on the right panel contains exactly the same HTML code as the first.  The only difference is the CSS code.
The shift to CSS is intended to help web designers keep styles separate from content. Learning to work with CSS will make a you better web designer and save countless hours of tedious re-coding when you decide to change the look of your site.  It's much easier to edit one file instead of many.

  • Can't Scroll Inside Drop Down Menus

I just got a new HP laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit), installed Firefox 11 (now updated to 12), and discovered that when using the track pad (Synaptics Touch Pad v8.1. Driver provided by Synaptics, version 15.3.29.0 dated 10/13/2011), I can not scroll inside drop down menus.
To replicate, go to this link: http://sacramento.craigslist.org/sss/
Click the drop down for the category to search. Use the track pad to scroll the list. Mine closes the list and returns focus to the browser instead of scrolling the list. It then scrolls the browser window instead. This works fine in IE. Things I have tried:
    Safe mode
    Unchecking smooth scrolling
    Unchecking autoscrolling
    Unchecking hardware acceleration
And just about any of the various combinations of the above things. I also tried restarting Firefox each time I made a change. Nothing seems to solve this issue.
Oddly enough, if there is a text window inside the page (like the on I am writing this in), I can scroll that just fine. Once I move my mouse out of the box, it scrolls the main page just fine. I don't think it's a matter of the focus following the mouse, it has something to do with scrolling drop down boxes specifically it seems.
Also, I should note that all the pages I have problems with work fine in IE the way they SHOULD work in Firefox.

It's Synaptics Touch Pad v8.1. It is using a driver provided by Synaptics, version 15.3.29.0 dated 10/13/2011, and is supposedly the most current version. I have tried getting newer off the HP website, letting Windows search for the most current version, and looking at the Synaptics site, but I still end up with the same version.
I have double checked the scrolling regions to make sure I am within them as well as all the other settings regarding the touch pad. In fact, I had to enable the scrolling regions because they were disabled by default and instead used two finger scrolling. For what it's worth, two finger scrolling gives me the same result - it does not scroll the drop down menu.
As I said, it works just fine in IE and all other programs, so I'm not sure I understand how the drivers for the touchpad could be the issue. It seems to me it's more likely that Firefox is not interpreting the "signal" from the touchpad correctly, yet IE does. Then again, I've been wrong before...

  • Using Javascript to require 2 drop down menus to have something selected

Hi everyone. I'm trying to get 2 drop down menus to each have something selected when the form is submitted. I'm using javascript for this, but I can't get it to work. Eddie,
I actually got this javascript below to work so if one drop down is left blank, and the other one is filled out, an error will pop up saying to entering either some initials or a rev. The only problem is that I have a dynamic list of drop downs in rows, so I need this javascript to run for each row. If I do the 1st row with 1 drop down selected and the other not, it gives me the error, which is perfect. But if I want the 2nd row to error out, for instance, doing the same thing, the error will not pop up. How do I make this work so it does this for each row since the list of drop downs is dynamic? My drop down menu names are Mfg_Spec_Prod_Approval_Initials and Mfg_Spec_Prod_Approval_Rev.

  • Making drop down menus in server side includes

Can drop down menus be part of a server side include? If not,
how do I have drop down menus in my pages without copying the code
    to all the pages individually?
I am working in Dreamweaver 8 on a Mac. I've made the drop
down menus using the behaviors window. Everything is fine in the
original html file. When I use the file as an include in my main
page, the javascript drop downs do not work. I have the style sheet
used in the drop down file attached to the main page. What do I
need to do with the main page to have the drop down menu work? I
need to use this drop down on the majority of my pages. Thanks!
Note: I've taken out the extra code in the include file

Sure - it's the only way I do them.

  • Reader drop-down menus have invisible content

I'm running 9.4.7 on Ubuntu 11.10. The Reader drop-down menus either have no text in them or the text is the same colour as the background. I've tried changing the Ubuntu theme but the problem remains.

Found an option to make the workaround permanent.
    Run Terminal.
Paste this "cd /etc/X11/Xsession.d" (no quotes).
A edit file would open separately.
Paste this "export UBUNTU_MENUPROXY="acroread":$UBUNTU_MENUPROXY" in the Editor window.
    Save the File.
    Exit Terminal.
    Do a fresh Login.
The menu option would appear below the Taskbar but would be working.
Tested in Ubuntu 11.10 with Reader 9.4.7

  • Acrobat X 10.1.1 - Colors picker drop down menus not working

Colours picker drop down menus are not working stuck on default in all selections - Is there any work around / any other way to bring in or select an exact RGB / HEX etc colour besides using this picker if it doesn't work?
    - Chris

You can programmatically set the various field colors (text, background, border) using JavaScript. For more information:
    Color arrays: http://livedocs.adobe.com/acrobat_sdk/9.1/Acrobat9_1_HTMLHelp/JS_API_AcroJS.88.260.html
    textColor property: http://livedocs.adobe.com/acrobat_sdk/9.1/Acrobat9_1_HTMLHelp/JS_API_AcroJS.88.726.html
So you could set up a temporary button and use the following script in the Mouse Up event:
// Set the text color to the RGB color (237,121,5),
// which is a nice pumpkin color
    getField("text1").textColor = ["RGB", 237/255, 121/255, 5/255];

  • Drop-down menus wig out, have to type backwards in address bar, etc.

When opening firefox, I noticed that my bookmarks were missing. I went to the drop-down menu to select view and the screen started scrolling all of the drop-down menus. I then moved onto the address bar and the cursor started moving to the beginning of the bar. When I typed in my address info, it would put the next letter in front of the last letter making my text enter in backwards from what I was typing.
My first thought is I have a virus, but my pc is protected. Firefox is the only program being affected. I can use IE explorere, but that is taking a step backwards in my opinion. I need this fixed asap. Help!!!

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
    See also http://kb.mozillazine.org/Locked_or_damaged_places.sqlite
You can create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.<br />
See [[Basic Troubleshooting#Make_a_new_profile|Basic Troubleshooting&#58; Make a new profile]]
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins"
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files)<br />
    See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox

  • Drop down menus, context menus and auto fill menus items don't appear!

I have FF4 beta, this started since FF4 beta 7. I work on Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit.
The problem is that I can't see drop down menus unless they have alot of items, nor context menus (like highlighting a text then right-clicking it), auto fill bars don't show the auto fill info entered before .. the menu itself appears, kinda. but it's transparent and the I can't see the items, don't know where to click to select the thing I want.
I haven't got this problem before 4.0b7 .. after I got it, I thought it was one of the plugins, so I disabled them all but still have the problem!
An image describing the problem is here, taken now on this page, I highlighted a text, and right-clicked it: [http://imgur.com/e9juh.png here] you can see the menu is somehow appearing, surrounded by the red border, but I can't see it!

Hardware accelaration disabled also worked for me. ATI Radeon 4670.
Seems the issue isn't set on one type of card. My flicker/vanish only did so on my secondary monitor.

  • Drop down menus and swf files

    Here's the site:
    http://www.oldshoecreative.com/CLS/
In IE, I cannot seem to get the drop down menus to appear in
front of the swf files that runs below them. I've tried the "wmode"
and "transparent" settings which work fine in Firefox, but I can't
get it right in IE. Any help would be appreciated.

I had to insert code seperately for IE and one for other
    browsers. Here's the code:
    <div id="webflashxmedia"><!--[if IE]>
    <script type="text/javascript">sg_ie_no_click_2(
