No Thumbnail pix

When I open the Organizer in PRE Elements9 the video files appear as a film icon instead if actual thumbnail.  How do I get thumbnail picture?

MP4s don't always show up -- especially if they're from a smart phone or pocket camcorder.
You can increase the odds that they will by:
a) Making sure you have the latest version of Quicktime; and
b) Starting a Premiere Elements project using the settings for Flip Mino HD camcorder so that the proper components are installed; or
c) Installing the camera/camcorder's software on your computer.
But many varieties of MP4 don't provide thumbnail information in format that the Elemetns Organizer can read.

  • How to place a row of photos *equidistant* in a vertical line?

I am finally working on whittling down the Navigation Bar at the top of the Site Menu.
I have learned how to use the Inspector to make all of the photos on this "Table of Contents" page of equal size. (James, thanx for reminding me of the Metric Inspector.) For example, I got all of my thumbnail pix for this page to be 148 x 104 pixels. I de-seleted the "constrain" box to achieve the equality-of-pixel-number thing. No one will notice the lack of constraint.
I also figured out how to get more guide lines to help in the placement of objects on a field, so it is easier to place them in the exact same line.
    THE QUESTION NOW IS:
How do I space the photos equidistant apart from each other in a vertical line? Thus far I have four "boxes" -- thumbnails representing the group which yields yet more pages upon which to click. (Pages are listed to the right of the photo thumbnail boxes.) I have all those boxes the same size, everything. Perfect. Wow wow. Blue lines popping up to tell me when to stop. BUT I cannot figure out how to get the spacing between the photos in that vertical line to be the same. PLEASE SEND A LUNCH WAGON AND HELP ME OUT! Thank you.

    Hi Lorna,
You could probably get close enough by eyeballing it, but if you really want to be exact you can use the X,Y coordinates that appear when you click and drag an image. Also, take into account what your page width is....700 by default.
The easy way without all the arithmetic? Here's what I do...(haha)... The middle image is always easy to get centered right...using the blue alignment guides. Then all you have to do is work on getting the two flanking images placed equidistant. It's probably easiest to start with the alignment guides on either side of the page. Just drag the image until it aligns with the side of the page. Then with the image still selected....use the arrow keys on your keyboard and move the image pixel by pixel toward the center image until the spacing between this image and the middle image look good to you. Keep track of how many times you hit the arrow key on your keyboard....could be 10, 20, 30 pixels...because you will want to punch the arrow key the exact same number of times for the image on the other side of the middle one! Let me know if my blind man's method of spacing things isn't clear. Haha....good luck!

  • I can't see my photos! They appear as dotted lines in a square shape.

when i click on my library or any of the subfolders, most of my photos aren't showing up. i know the image is still there, but i can't see it. instead of a thumbnail pix, there is just a white dotted line in the shape of a square where the pix should be and it's title displayed under it.
when i double click on the dotted line box, and it brings it up big in the 'edit' box, there is an ! in the middle of the dotted line square. i tried updating the iphoto version to 6 and that seemed to work fine, but still most of my pix aren't showing up.
maybe 5% of my pix are still showing up, inner mixed with the 95% that have become dotted lines.
    help!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
The ! or ? turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
If this fails then it is likely that you have a damaged database file.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • Automatically generate thumbnail image icons for all pix and vids...

    hello,
i've searched around on the forums a bit about making the icons of my pics and vids actual thumbnail images made from the picture or the first frame of the video.
a lot of responses are mistaking this question for "how do i put the window into icon view?" this infact is not the answer that i suspect a lot of windows converts are looking for.
windows automatically makes such icons for all pix and vids if you put the window into icon view.
i notice in at cmd-j or in the window preferences there is a checkbox for "show image preview" or something like that, but despite this being checked, my pix and vids do not show an image preview. i'm gathering that this information does not exist in the resource fork which mac uses to organize photos.
is there any script or addition i can make to my system to automatically generate icons for pics and vids of all types? how to i suggest to mac that they add this functionality into the next release?
    thanks for your time,
    max

The Finder will create icons "on the fly" for nearly all graphic type files (jpegs, tiff, psd, and so on) and display them in both icon view and column view, provided the appropriate view preference has been set. Movies will just have the generic movie icon in icon view, and have a "live" preview in column view, ie you can play them in preview mode. If you want to add a permanent thumbnail which will display in all views, and whether or not the preference has been set for a particular folder in Finder, you'll need to add a thumbnail to the file. There are lots of ways to do this for static pictures, even rather clumsy ways to do it for movies, but the easiest thing is to get CocoThumbX:
    http://www.stalkingwolf.net/software/cocothumbx/
Drag and drop both static pictures and movie files onto the application and a permanent thumbnail is created. Indeed, it will create cool thumbs even for things like PDF and HTML files (code or rendered display). For movies to get a thumb, they must be in a format that QuickTime can read. It has a set of preferences for just how you want the thumb determined (eg random or at a certain time), and you can drop batches of movies or even folders to have it assign thumbs to multiple movies at the same time. It is a way cool piece of shareware.

  • I ran MacKeeper and demo'd my wife's iPhoto archive bigtime: RAW files appear corrupted and lotsa pix w/no thumbnails or "!" marks instead. Help!

I ran MacKeeper and demo'd my wife's iPhoto archive bigtime: RAW files appear corrupted and lotsa pix w/no thumbnails or "!" marks instead. Help!

Should I take it that recco'd means 'recommended'? Still have no idea what demo'd means in the context you use. I've often seem it as an abbreviation for 'demonstrate' but that makes no sense. The problem with idiosyncratic abbreviations is that other people don't understand them.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • IPhone pix thumbnails don't show in iPhoto

Just upgraded to Snow Leopard yesterday. Took some photos with my iPhone 3G. When I sync the phone with my iMac, it launches iPhoto but the thumbnails don't show in iPhoto, only the yellow dashed line indicating they are there.
The photos download fine so this isn't a huge issue, just odd. Anyone else run into this and have a fix?
    Thanks!

I think what I have noticed is that the thumbnails for screenshots (which are .png format) don't show up before importing. The thumbnails for regular pix should.
    I didn't worry about a fix.

  • IPhoto is pointing to thumbnails, not full pix

I had to rebuild a library a year or so ago, with the assistance of Apple help, which is where I suspect this problem started ... in any case:
I just realized that a minority of the 6,000-plus pictures in iPhoto were fuzzy and had strangely low file sizes: 19K, for example. (Many others are crisp and in the multiple-MB size.) I looked into the Photos file and it appears that, at least in the cases I checked (hopefully all!), there is a full-sized photo and also a thumbnail. For some reason iPhoto is pointing to the thumbnail, which I assume means that is the version that would be printed, emailed, and so on.
How can I "point" iPhoto to the full-sized photo and not the thumbnail?

Okay, here are the further steps I've taken. I did venture into the Pictures folder--frowned on, I know--to see if larger originals existed of the 19kb-size photos in iPhoto.
I found that by previewing those photos, you could see if the photos had been imported into iPhoto; if they hadn't, you could click a box and important them. Many of my high-res photos were not imported, for whatever reason, so I did so, one by one. Tedious but hopefully productive. I did not touch anything else in that folder.
But I do also seem to have a two-libraries-file problem. (This may be the result of the Apple Care call I mentioned earlier, in which someone walked me through reconstructing a corrupted library by creating a new one.)
I have a libraries file called Newlibrary, and another called iPhotoLibrary6. Both have been updated in the last day.
Is the recommended next step to merge these, using iPhoto Library Manager?

  • Can't always save Adobe PSE pix with thumbnails

Sometimes after editing a photo in Adobe PS Elements (not using iPhoto) I get a thumbnail with the saved file and sometimes not. Why is this? Also can I edit the thumbnailo image? Thanks
    Owen

My questions were answered with the help of Barbara Brundage is the Adobe PSE forum:
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx?14@@.59b61a30/0
The following is a summary of the discussion:
In the course of this thread I have learned a few things and think that it would be useful to summarize the major points.
First there were several issues, some Mac and some PSE related. This discussion was greatly facilitated by Barbara Brundage who was able to discuss both. Thanks, Barbara.
There were 2 issues that seemed connected but weren't. First, it wasn't clear to me for stored images why sometimes I saw a thumbnail icon and sometimes a generic icon (eg, a generic JPEG icon). Further, there were 2 different generic JPEG icons. Secondly, when I emailed JPEG files, recipients on Windows machines could not open some of the images.
The latter problem was solved by choosing in Mac Mail Edit>Attachments>Always send Window Friendly Attachments
Without this selection for some reason the incompatibility was worse with PSE6 than it had been with PSE4.
Normally with a generic icon (e.g. JPEG, PING) the Mac will substitute a thumbnail of the image if in the Finder>View>Show View Options "Show View Icon" is selected.
For a reason that is not clear saved images from PSE6 sometimes have an Adobe PSE generic icon, which is different. This icon says JPEG in bold letters and has some geometric symbols (overlapping square, triangle and circle). Selecting "Show View Icon" has no effect on this icon. When the Mac is restarted the Adobe generic icon will have been replaced by a thumbnail (regardless of whether "Show View Icon" is selected). Whatever is going on here is minor (but might be confusing).
Finally it is a good practice not to use periods in filenames, except preceding the extension.

  • Drag and Drop (re-order) Thumbnails in Organizer

I am using Photoshop Elements version 5.0.2
I would like to re-order pictures in an order that will make sense for me in my business. I suppose I can go through each pix and change the time on them, so I can then sort by time stamp.
Is there an easier way to do this? I was hopeful that I could drag and drop them in Thumbnail view - but I cannot.
    Thank you,
    Jamie

    >Is there anyway to delete the photos in the main well, without losing them from my collection?
As I understand the design, the main well is intended to be all the photos that you are managing with Photoshop Elements.
Collections are used to display a specific group of those photos in your chosen sequence for any given activity.
I suspect that since you are using a consumer product such as Photoshop Elements for your business purpose, you may need to make some compromises like having a default (the main photo well) display sequence which you see first when starting PSE that is not what you would choose.
This is not bad if PSE does what you want - just additional steps to switch to the Collection view and also to maintain (drag and drop) the sequencing of the collection when you add additional photo files to a Collection.

  • PSE unable to create thumbnails after Album Starter removed

My sister accepted the upgrade to Adobe Reader 8.0 and said Photoshop Album Starter was automatically loaded on her computer with that upgrade. When she had difficulty working with it, we found some instructions for unloading it, which she did. However, then her problems "really" began. Several pictures on her Desktop were renamed with the PDF file extension, and their thumbnails were totally black. Her "Pix" folder on her Desktop and all the pictures she had in it, plus other pictures stored on her Desktop, disappeared into her Recycle Bin. I restored these files and the folder back to her Desktop, but many of these also had the black thumbnails, or black thumbnails with a thin stripe of colors mixed in with the black across the top. We could still open the pictures, which was a blessing, at least.
However, things became worse as we discovered that ALL new files created with Photoshop Elements (she has both 3.0 and 1.0 and both responded the same way) will no longer create thumbnails. I opened one of the corrupted-thumbnail photos and copied the layer into a new Photoshop Elements document and saved the file with a new filename and a PSD extension thinking that would give us back a file with a thumbnail. Wrong. Still got a black thumbnail. Tried saving as a JPG; still no go. I then selected New and created a totally new document. Same result; no thumbnail. So I created new documents in her Corel Painter IX and Microsoft Paint to see if this was just an "Adobe" thing, and these other programs had no problem creating normal thumbnails with saved documents. So, it's obviously just an Adobe thing.
My only thought at this point is that unloading Adobe Album also deleted or corrupted a shared Adobe file that allows Adobe products to create thumbnails. I suggested that she try reloading her Photoshop Elements programs to see if that brings back the ability to create thumbnails.
Sorry for the long background, but does anyone out there know how to get Photoshop Elements to start creating thumbnails again after getting rid of Album? I'd be ever so grateful if you could help us out!
    Marilyn Lee

Hey, Marilyn, I found an answer! Well, this doesn't "fix" the problem, but it does allow you to work around it. There is a program (shareware) called "Thumbnail View," and you can find it at the address below.
    http://www.seriema.net/thumbview/index.php...e=download_lite
It worked for me, and my computer's not very new. I can now see PSD thumbnails where before there was just a little icon. Best of luck.

  • Iphoto 6 Thumbnail Viewing/Indexing Problem

i recently upgraded to iphoto 6.0.5 and my photos get out of order within the albums when i use the blue scroll bar to go up and down through my different albums. Pictures from different albums appear out of order. when i stop the scroll bar and/or click off it, the pictures in view change right in front of me and go to what they should be, but its a HUGE pain for maneuvering and just not accurate. Every time i move the pix up and down, they completely change when i stop so u never know what is really in that location and in that album
Originally on the update, it said i needed to do some kind of "organizing my thumbnail cache" which I think i did (or maybe it stopped halfway through) but I cant find ANYTHING else about this in the help section or online. I tried correcting file permissions on my system and restarting, but iphot is basically really screwed up from a organizing and indexing standpoint. Any ideas?

    keylowd
Try the following: hold down the apple and option keys and launch iPhoto. This will give you a dialogue box where you can rebuild the database. Use the first three options. It may take a while, depending on the size of your library.
If that doesn't work try deleting the iPhoto Cache from Home/Library/Caches - just trash it, and restart the machine. This will force iPhoto to rebuild the cache. Again, this may take a some time and will make the first launch of iPhoto slower after.

  • Importing Pix From A Disk

A friend sent me a disc full of jpegs and I can't figure out how to import the pix into iPhoto. Also I cannot view the picturs as thumbnails because they only showup as icons. In windows you could go to view and click view as thumbnails to see the pix. Any advice?

Click on the CD icon and select all images on the CD (cmd A), then double click one of the images. All images will then show up in Preview. This will allow you to view all images on the CD.
    To import into iPhoto:
    1. Open iPhoto and resize to fit side-by-side with the finder window showing the image files on the CD.
    2. Select all the images on the CD (cmd A) or if you only want to copy certain images, click on the ones you want while you hold down the cmd key.
    3. Drag the selected images onto the iPhoto browser window.
    4. Images will copy to iPhoto.

  • Portrait oriented thumbnail becomes Black Exclamation error when clicked on

After loading in pix from my new Canon G9 (12 megapixel), I can click on landscape oriented photos (from their thumbnails) and they come to full screen display as expected, however all the portrait oriented thumbnails flash up to full screen and then immediately are replaced by a weird big black exclamation mark in a white circle (this is all very blurry and the size of the full screen picture that should have been shown)... it is clearly some sort of error message indicator. I had no such problem with my Canon a710 (8 mpix).
Note, if I go to full screen viewing mode (by clicking the expander button at the bottom left of the screen) these pictures are displayed properly when I tab through my shots.
I searched iphoto help for "exclamation" and there is a discussion of a little exclamation error format (tiny compared to what I get displayed) and it signals problems locating the photo, but that is not the problem I have (it is findable, even displays briefly before being replaced by the BIG BLURRY EXCLAMATION IN A TELESCOPE TYPE VIEWFINDER image.
Any idea if this is a known bug and how do you report such a bug to Apple online?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
The size of the exclamation mark doesn't matter, it means the same thing.

  • Thumbnails not showing up in sequence when media reconnected

I use Final Cut Express for editing. I recently moved all of a client's projects from one external hard drive to another for archive purposes. Now I need to revise several sequences but most (not all) of the thumbnails don't show up on the sequence timeline when I reconnect the media (video, pix and graphics). I deleted previous thumbnails caches. What do I have to do, short of re-editing the whole thing? Help

OK. Things seem to be working now - lots of thumbnails to reconstruct. Thanks. I guess I need help for setting up preferences and their locations to avoid this ever happening again. Should they always be kept on the same hard drive as the actual files?

  • How come my iPhoto faces thumbnails are rotated 90º?

    Hey guys,
I just recently rebuilt my iPhoto library. Now, my photos that were scanned in by hand have a problem with the rotation.
First off, I can understand that they're not rotated at the right angle.
However, I can't understand what's going on with the next problem.
Faces are being detected in the wrong spot! For example:
Clearly, the two people identified are not in the right spots. (Names blurred for privacy; two people being recognized are the mother and the older son.)
I have to go in, manually rotate the photo to the correct orientation, hit the left or right arrow key (to save it), and then come back to the photo before I am able to see that the faces are identified in the correct position.
However, yet another problem crops up. After doing all the aforementioned things, to get Faces to recognize the faces properly, when I exit the editing or info view, the faces which had the rotation issues are now rotated.
I don't know how to fix this one, though. Does anybody have any ideas? Thanks in advance!

if you go to "pictures around the world", you will be exposed to a bunch of folders: "europe", "africa", south america"... and more. click on "south america" and you will get "peru", "bolivia"...

click on one of them-u will get a bunch of photos in that specific destination.
why do i need this order? cause i dont want my photos from africa, to get mixed up with photos from the middle ease, or europe..
Wow, that is a LOT of work to get them organized into individual folders like that.
When you organize them in folders, what if a photo fits in more than 1 category such as Bolivia and 2009 and family?
You have to duplicate it and put it into three different folders.
And you can't really see the photos except as a thumbnail in the Finder.
This is what the metadata is good for. Using keywords, events, albums and smart albums and such to very easily organize everything.
iPhoto and iTunes are both managers of the data so you don't have a zillion different folders and wonder where you put that photo of your dog.
Using iPhoto, to see all photos from Aftrica, just type Africa.
Want only Lima, just type Lima.
How about family pix in Luxembourg in 2008? Just type the keywords.
Looking through folders, you'd be digging for a while and everything would be in different folders and then what?
But if that works for you, okay.
I'd rather enjoy looking at and doing something (printing/emailing) with the photos than spend time organizing/figuring out where everything is.
    Good luck!
