No thumbnails for images?

Hello,
I downloaded some images from the Web. Some of them do have thumbnails, but some of them don't, and just show up with a paper sheet icon. It's very inconvenient. How to make thumbnails appear?
Thank you.

You can try to add one in Terminal:
     sips -i <filename>

I can see my thumbnails for my events in iphoto, but when I click to open the folder, no photos show up. However, when I hover over the thumbnail, it shows the flicker of images
that should be inside the folder, as well as # of images in each folder. It also occasionally says the following when I try to even open iphoto:  "Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process for very large libraries may take an hour or more to complete." So, I am scared to hit "upgrade" for fear I will never recover any of the images as the wording in this quote seems odd. The photos are not in the trash. Did I lose them all? Do you know if/how I can retrieve them?

    iPhoto 08?
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • No thumbnails for XPM images

I used to see thumbnails for my xpm images in Finder, however now I no longer see any thumbnails or preview images. How does one fix this?

How long ago was that? Once upon a time various ai and eps files displayed thumbs in Finder, then they went away. And once Photoshop files with an alpha channel displayed correctly (I still can't believe that this was taken away and never returned). Apple giveth and Apple taketh away. AFAIK the best you can do is get a QuickLook generator that handles xpm files and then use it to see thumbs. There's one here:
    http://rene.rebe.name/2008-11-27/ei-based-quick-look-pnm-and-xpm-finally/
I tried it and it seems to work without a problem.

  • Enable video file and image file thumbnails WITHOUT enabling thumbnails for other filetypes

Hello. I am new to Mac and pulling my hair out at some of the limited UI options
I am wanting my image-files and video-files to appear in Finder (desktop etc) as thumbnails
However, I DON'T want PDFs, Excel, Word, PowerPoint files to have a preview thumbnail
Basically how things are now either way, it's very cumbersome visually to distinguish between file-types while cruising around my folders with a quick glance.
if thumbnail previews are on for all, its hard to tell at a quick glance which are PDFs, Excel files vs. images
similarly, the little "pdf" or "xlsx" or "docx" text overlay on these previews is so small and non-color coded as to be useless for quick-glance recognition of which filetype
if thumbnails are off, it's impossible to glance at files in a folder and know which image or video each is without wasting my precious miliseconds clicking on them, or trying to actually read truncated filenames
Here are some possible solutions which I hope somebody knows how to do:
globally enable or disable icon previews by filetype (preferred)
stipulate adding overlayed mini icons to certain filetypes
example: if it's a pdf, show the icon preview, but overlayed on that would be the red Adobe pdf icon/logo roughly a quarter of the size of the file icon (like is possible in Windows 7).
this way image and video previews can be seen at a glance, but having a big red or green or blue logo makes for immediate recognition of filetype
(least prefered but could help) ...somehow change the font color and increase the font size of the overlayed "pdf" "xlsx" "doc" "pptx"currently standard on these filetypes while showing icon preview but ALL are miniscule black text no matter which filetype
I'm quite dumbfounded right now that something for better immediate-glance filetype recognition isn't standard, or at least easily Google'able. All I've found is the Either/Other bamboozle.
Would love it to hear of a solution for this. Thanks all.

Put all of your separate flash movies into one move, and then
    use flash to
load the movies into a top section of the flash document.
Your site (this page) sounds like it would be best viewed
    entirely in Flash
    (at least easiest w/o reloading).

  • Creating Thumbnails for web page links to larger images.

I want to create thumbnail images for linking to web page linking to enlargements. I'm using PhotoShop Elements 2.0 on a Dell 2400, XP Home Edition with 512mb RAM and 35gb storage available.
The language I read in help sections doesn't addressed the issue I want help with. I believe it addresses saving thumbnails for Windows and Mac using .tiff or .psd format, not the .jpg or .gif I need. It seemed like there should be a way to change the thumbnail format. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Hi Ted,
You can use the ' Web Photo gallery ' as Jodi suggested for a large
    number of images or,
Open your image, click the bar at the top of the displayed image &
reset the size to what you want, then 'File', 'Save for Web' & save as
.jpg or .gif. .jpg gives more options for reducing file size so that
is what I use. Close the image without saving

    Alex,

  • Components for displaying thumbnails of images

Anyone know of good components that are available that allow you to display thumbnails of images?
How about components that allow you to convert file types?
    Thanks,
    Eric

    If you only need the basic image types (GIF, JPEG), load it into an ImageIcon, scale it down, and plop it into a JLabel:Image  image     = new ImageIcon(filename).getImage();
    Icon   thumbnail = new ImageIcon(image.getScaledInstance(w, h, hints));
    JLabel thumbview = new JLabel(thumbnail);

  • Best practice for images in APEX

    Hello All,
    I use APEX 4.2.2 .. Oracle 11g SOE...
Speaking about the sample DB application. Suppose each product has more than one image. And that we have two Apps desktop & Mobile. Suppose Product A has 5 images.
    ===>>
Does it mean that for Product A, I have to store 12 images as following:
    5 images for Desktop App where dimensions are e.g 640 x 480
    5 images for Mobile App where dimensions are e.g 448 x 336
1 Thumbnail for desktop App 104 x 104 ( To show up on the report )
1 Thumbnail for mobile App 50 x 50 ( To show up on the report )
Here I noticed that the image are begin resized on the fly. As we upload images, we get thumbnails. Any comments ???

    Hello Roel,
Thanks for the response. I am aware of Oracle Multimedia. Maybe, I was not clear. As I got from you, you agree that I have to store 2 editions of each image one for desktop and the other for mobile.
do the proper scaling in the application itself. You mean I can use Height and Width Attributes of the img Tag to scale the images to be used in Report / List . But as I know this does not reduce the size of the image. If the list shows 20 record with 20 images, the mobile webpage will be slow.
So, do you agree that I have to generate a two thumbnails (one for desktop and another for mobile ) for each PRODUCT, or you were refereeing to something else ?

  • Bridge CS6 not generating correct thumbnails for RAW files

I'm running Bridge CS6 (the latest version, 5.0.2.4) on a 2013 MacBook Pro (OSX 10.9.1) and suddenly as of today Bridge is no longer updating the thumbnails for my RAW files. All other image and video file formats are having thumbnails generated but not my Nikon NEF raw files including those which I have previously worked on in ACR. I have tried purging the entire cache, restarting Bridge and even rebooting my computer and still the raw thumbnails are not being generated.
Any advice would be appreciated thank you.
    Eric
Actually I've just noticed that thumbnails for jpegs are not being generated either. A thumbnail is only generated if I work on a file in Photoshop and then save it.

Check you cache disk free space.  You should have at least 15%.  For a 700g drive that that 100g free.
Have you reset preferences?  Hold down option key and start bridge.  You will get a reset window.

  • Preview / Thumbnails for videos not showing

    Hello Guys,
I was hoping someone can help me.
I usually import photos from my Canon 400d and iPhone 4 and 3GS and it's been working fine for a long time.  A couple of weeks ago, it stopped showing the thumbnails for photos and videos.
My settings for import are to render previews with minimal size (and has always worked great like that).  If I try to render standard sized thumbs after import, sometimes it works, and sometimes it hangs with some photos.   I can quickly fix that going into "Develop" mode where it creates the preview correctly.
But for videos, because you can't go into develop mode, it just hangs trying to build the previews.
Note that all videos previous to 07-22-2011 show the thumb correctly.
Some more info on my system and the things I've tried.
    My system is a Macbook Pro 2.66 i7 with 8Gb DDR3
    Lightroom 3.4.1 - 64 bits
    Cameras Canon 400d, iPhone 4 & 3GS
I'm running Lion OS X now but I can see in my catalogue that the blank thumbnails start appearing a week before I upgraded.
My catalog is not too big, around 3K photos
I tried getting rid discarding all the 1:1 previews and rebulding them again.  I works OK for the photos but the rendering hangs when the get to the videos that have been imported after 07-22-2011.
I checked the video properties and they are all the same as old videos (nothing changed in my iphone)  they are .mov files h264 with ACC audio (same as all the previous ones that show the thumbnail correctly)
I tried deleting the .lrdata preview file, and recreating all the previews in standard-size and nothing, then tried with 1:1 preview, but again it hangs when it gets to the videos
I created a new catalog and imported 2 new videos. getting the same result.
    Can anyone help?

    Thanks Geoff.
I used an app called app zapper to completely delete 3.4 and then installed 3.5 RC and the general speed seems to be a 'little' bit better.
But video seem to screw up everything.   Previews are still not rendering for videos and as soon as I get into a mixed folder (videos & images) Lightroom starts to lag badly...

  • Custom thumbnail for a file type, not a single file

I understand that when I upload an asset to the DAM of a file type for which CQ5 doesn't support thumbnail generation (Excel .xls and .xlsx, in my case), CQ5 will use a default dogeared-page icon for the thumbnail.  it also writes an error-level message to the log to the effect that it can't generate a thumbnail.  E.g.,
15.10.2012 12:03:47.078 ERROR [JobHandler: /etc/workflow/instances/2012-10-15/model_1135358760340484:/content/dam/FY06NIVDetailTable1.xls/jcr:content/renditions/original] com.day.cq.dam.commons.handler.AbstractAssetHandler createThumbnails: cannot create thumbnails for asset [/content/dam/FY06NIVDetailTable1.xls], failed loading graphical representation for rendition [/content/dam/FY06NIVDetailTable1.xls/jcr:content/renditions/original].
The error message is mostly harmless, but I would like to prevent it.
And I understand that I can add a thumbnail after the fact.  But despite the language in the document, apparently this thumbnail does not apply to subsequent uploads (for all files of the same type).
Is there a way to establish a thumbnail image that applies to subsequent uploads?

    Hi David,
Thumbnail upload (or for that matter any rendition upload) is specific to that image and it will not apply to set of images.
If we want to apply some custom thumbnail instead of the default one either we need to override the default image or custom workflow step is required.
If we override the default image it will apply acroos the DAM.
Regarding custome workflow step. This step will be added after thumbnail creation step in DAM Update Asset workflow(this wf is responsible for creating all renditions). In this workflow step you can check whether thumbnail is created or not if not create thumbnail of your desire.

  • Right thumbnail, wrong images

    I'm using iMovie 11 (9.0.2) on a 2010 MBP with 500GB of hard drive and 8GB RAM.
I sat down this weekend to put together a video for a friend - ten minutes of scanned stills and ripped-from-DVD videos with a separate narration track.
I did it in 10 separate sequences - each sequence its own project - and they all worked fine. Then I created a new project into which I was going to put together all ten sequences.
I got five of them in just fine, but when I put in the sixth one, I started getting anomalies. A thumbnail for a picture of one person now contained pieces of stills of other people I'd already put in. (In other words, a few stills from the first minute of the project now showed up in minute six under the thumbnail of the still that was supposed to go there).
It was weird. I tried it agin. Dragged the correct still into place ... saw the right thumbnail ... but when I played it, I saw images that I'd already cut in earlier. I had no problem with any of the video segments I'd inserted ... only a few jpegs.
I tried deleting and re-inserting ... same problem. I tried creating a new project and just starting with minute six, and got the same problem. I closed and re-opened iMovie - same problem. I re-botted. Same problem. It seems like I hit iMovie's limit for ... I don't know ... something.
Since I needed to get this done, I just created QuickTime movies of each sequence, and married them all together in Final Cut Express, which worked fine. But I'd love to know if there's some way I could have finished this project in iMovie.
Has anyone seen this anomaly - the thumbnail is right but when you play the sequence the images are totally wrong?
Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer ...

I had the same issue today. The thumbnail footage appears correct, but I can't play it to preview it. If I select a portion and put it in a project, I can play, but I can't play it in the preview/event library section. Very strange.
    Anyone have a fix idea?

  • Scrubber Thumbnails for HTML Articles - How Do You Get them to Actually Appear?!?!?

    Hi Gang,
My apologies if I asked this last month, but it's really driving me nuts.
The cover of our magazine is an HTML article, and it appears as a blank screen in both the TOC and BROWSE modes. The former is easy to fix by simply creating a thumb image and inserting it via Indesign or the Folio Producer. It's the browse mode that is the conundrum. I've followed the following instructions provided by ADOBE and updated my HTML article but to no avail.
Creating scrubber thumbnails for HTML articles
For InDesign articles, the viewer automatically generates the thumbnails that appear when you drag the scrubber. However, generating thumbnails for HTML articles takes more time, sometimes resulting in poorly rendered thumbnails. To improve thumbnail performance in HTML articles, you can manually add image files to the HTML article folders.
Create png files that are named "scrubberthumbnail_h.png" and "scrubberthumbnail_v.png" (you can also use _l and _p suffixes). Add these files to the HTML article folder. There is no size restriction for these images, but note that they are scaled down proportionally to a height of 166 pixels. As a point of reference, when thumbnails are generated, landscape thumbnails are 221x166 pixels, and portrait thumbnails are 125x166 pixels.
What am I doing wrong? My folio is portrait (vertical)-only and I put my .png filed named "scrubberthumbnail_v.png" in the parent directory (same level as the "cover_v.html" file targetted) of the HTML article. Should it be put somehwere else in the article folder?
I'm hoping there is a simply solution.
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks guys, but that doesn't address my problem. It's an HTML article, not a web content overlay.
Yes, I know I could redo the cover within InDesign using a web content overlay spanning the entire 'page' and use a MSO as pointed out, but the cover starts off empty and then items begin to appear (ie) image and then the magazine title followed by the article titles. The latter which are linked (navto:) to their respective article. The problem is that navto links do NOT work in web content overlays, which is why I resorted to creating an HTML article. But alas, the scrubber thumbnail problem...
The instructions above do not work for me, unless I've done something wrong such as placing the thumb image in the wrong location within my HTML folder, which in this case is a published EDGE ANIMATE project.
And yes I could still go the MSO/InDesign web content overlay route and insert invisible frames over my link text as delayed MSOs, but that seems unecessary since I should be able to create the scrubber thumbnail for an HTML article as explained above.
Any advice regarding the creation of the scrubber thumbnail? Or does it simply not function as intended at this time? I'm using InDesign CS5.5 using v.26 tools.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Thumbnails for Videos and Movies are Blank or Black?

I've just "upgraded" to iPhoto 11. Now most of my video or movie files have black and blank thumbnails. The movies don't start out with a black frame, it's that iPhoto isn't registering a thumbnail for some reason. I looked through the archive but the suggestions are focused on previous versions of iPhoto.
    Any suggestions?

I tried this as well. Rebuilding with all the different rebuild options (which does take a long time) and with no joy I'm afraid - still have black thumbnails for video images.
FYI: Tried a rebuilding in iPhoto Library Manager too
Problem still persists.  Any one have any ideas on this, I have so many videos with this issue ... black thumbnail image/preview in iPhoto - but (thankfully) the video file is definitely there and does play.
    Any ideas appreaciated.
