No Thumbnails in Organiser

Hi, I've been using Elements 9 for some years now, without too many mishaps. However, recently any images that I upload are not being shown in the Organiser as "thumbnails" ;  all that I get is the egg-timer going round and round and a message at the foot of the page saying "generating thumbnails" I can leave it all night and no Thumbnails are ever revealed, although if you click the egg timer image the file comes up as it should. Its obviosly neither satisfactory or easy to work with images this way. Can anyone suggest what has happened here please?

1. Try repairing the catalog by doing File > Catalog > Repair followed by File > Catalog > Optimize.
2. Try regenerating the thumbnails.  Do Show All, Edit > Select All, and then Edit > Update Thumbnail.
3. If Update Thumbnail doesn’t work, try deleting the thumbnail cache. Configure Windows Explorer to view hidden files. Then do Help > System Info to find the folder containing your catalog.  Exit PSE.  In Windows Explorer, navigate to that folder and delete the file “thumbs.cache”. Restart PSE.

  • Viewing G1 RAWs as thumbnails in Organiser 9

Hi, I think I'm correct in stating that I cannot view my Panasonic G1 RAWs as thumbnails in Organiser 9, as I can in SilkyPix which was supplied with my G1.
I'm very impressed with Elements 9, but my G1 RAWs just show up as RAW icons. They open fine in ACR, but I would like to view them as thumbnails in Organiser. Is there an add-on I need to download or is the only way to view these RAW files by opening them in ACR?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

  • Why won't raw images display as thumbnails in organiser?

My raw images display only as the 'egg timer' icons in Organiser.  I can open them individually, edit and save as jpeg but cannot view them on the grid either before or after editing. This has only just started happening - two weeks ago all was well. It's such a nuisance not being able to scroll down my images in order to decide which ones to edit.
    Here's what I've tried:
    Uninstalled Elements 12 and reinstalled
Checked for updates (all up to date)
    Updated thumbnails
Usually what happens after my images are imported is that I see these icons and they gradually open to reveal my raw images.  Now they just stay with the timer icon and nothing more happens.
Anyone help me before I tear out any more hair?  Thank you!

If you can use the 'update thumbnail' successfully on individual files and open those files in ACR correctly chances are that you are facing a computer power problem. Creating a thumbnail in the Organizer means opening the image to create a reduced version. For raw files, that means reading the raw file (32 GB each for my Fuji raws...), converting it using the last settings in the xmp sidecar files, then creating the reduced thumbnail. Several seconds, even with a decent  computer.
To get an idea of your problem, it would be good to know the type and size of your raw files and your computer specs.
Contrary to other viewing softwares which only show the embedded jpeg thumbnail in the raw file, the organizer shows a real preview.

On some of the pictures in my Organiser, there are blue ticks.  What are these there for? and what do I need to do about them?  Help  please!

  • Deleting thumbnails from Organiser

If I delete thumbnails from the Organiser main window, the same thumbnails are also deleted from my Collections and tagged files.
Is it necessary for the Organiser to work that way or am I missing something? I just wanted to have less thumnnails to scroll through and once they are tagged it seemed logical to delete the thumbnails from the main window.
    Thanks
    John

    John,
In addition to suggestions such as using a Show tag, it seems that for some cases the Find menu choice of "find untagged items" might be useful for you.
Another general comment is that you probably do not want to place all photos in Collections. I use Collections to make specific arrangements of photos for specific purposes like a slide show. If I have photos from an event like a family birthday party, I make a Tag for the event and then also apply people tags. Only when I am ready to use the photos for something like a slide show where I also want to control sequence, do I make a Collection.
Sometimes people start by using a Collection instead of a Tag for an Event. A Tag has more flexibilty for searching and is therefore almost always better for identification of the photos.

  • Thumbnails in PSE9 organiser on Mac

The thumbnails in organiser appear as egg timers when there is more than one on view. When the thumbnails first appear there is a message "generating thumbnails" at the bottom of the organiser window. Enlarging the thumbnail to one per page, slider to the right, the thumbnail egg timer size increases and then the image appears. Jpegs display fine and smaller size raw files also display correctly. The files in question are from a EOS7d. I run pse9 on a pc with no problem. Is ther a preference I've set that is causing this?

I've been adjusting the size of the thumbnails and have found that if I have five or less columns of thumbnails on the screen that they do display okay. As the screen on my pc(notebook) is relatively small I wouldn't have had more than five columns in the organiser and so wouldn't have seen the problem. Thanks Barbara for trying and I hope this posting assists someone else.

  • Embedding tags in files for viewing and searching in other software

    Hi,
I'm a bit confused about how tags are associated with files.  I recently transferred all my photos to a new computer and lost some, but not all, the tags I had added to my photos within Elements Organiser.  I am in the process of archiving all my old family photos by scanning slides, negatives and prints. I'm working on a Windows computer.  Most are being saved as TIFFs but I also have JPEGs and RAW files.  I want future generations of my family to be able to search these photos by using first name tags for example.  They may not have Photoshop.  My daughter uses a Mac and different software.
I see that under the File menu there is an option 'write keyword tags and property info to photo'.  Will this save this info so that it can be found and searched in other types of software?  If so, does this apply to all types of photo files?
And another quick similar question - when I change the date of the photo under the thumbnail in Organiser is this saved to the file?
Thnaks for any help you can give me.
    Stuart Logan

I think you are confusing the value and purpose of JPGs vs TIFFs vs RAWs.
You always (that's always) save your originals. These are either the photos straight out of the camera, or straight out of the scanner. You may choose to make other versions of these photos for other purposes.
So ... keep your originals. Keep your edited versions. When you need to send photos to somewhere else, you can make JPGs of them, and send them (after which time you could delete the JPGs if you want). If space is a problem, the generally accepted wisdom is that hard disk space is cheap, that 1 terabyte hard drive are well under 100 dollars US; so the optimal strategy is to get extra hard disk space rather than delete the originals.
Regarding the codecs that enable you to see the RAW photo thumbnails in Windows: these will NOT allow you to see the edits you make in ACR/PSE. Nor does it help to allow you to search for keywords in DNG files. You have hit upon a disadvantage to using DNG versus RAW; if you use RAW, the tags get written to a sidecar (text) file, and these are searchable using Windows. If you use DNG, the tags are embedded into the DNG file, and are not searchable using Windows (although somewhere in the back of my mind, I thought I had heard that you can configure Windows to search for tags in DNG files, but the details, if this is true, escape me).

  • Slow to create Organiser Catalog & Thumbnails in Photoshop and Premiere?

This is a newbie question ... I tried to find an answer, however most posts seem to be about specific issues.
    Background
I have just upgraded my PC to an intel quad processor (6600), new motherboard, 4gb DDR 800mhz ram, 512mb geforce video card and new 500Gb SATA2 HDD.
I've purchaesd and installed Photoshop Elements 6 and Premiere 4 and am now trying to get all my photos and videos into the organiser.
    Issue
I have moved all my photos and videos to a specific folder and have run the Get Photos option in photoshop organiser. It finds something like 11,000 items and loads them up. From this point there are no thumbnails displayed, they are all greyed out and it says "Generating Thumbnails" in the bottom left of the frame. I left this runnning overnight, and in the mornign there are still no thumbnails displayed (slider all the way to left to show max number of thumbs).
What I was hoping to do was to load up all images and videos, then gradually work my way through them assigning ratings and metadata ... seems that it is taking an awefully long time to load ... am I following the wrong approach?
Another related issue is that when I load premiere 4 and select the "Organiser" tab, the system seems to hang for a long time when displaying video's only (about 30Gb of videos) ... if I try to page down on the thumbnails of videos, the system hangs and takes about 5mins to re-fresh the view.
Maybe I'm following the worng approach in trying to organise all images and videos at teh same time ?? ... any ideas on how I can do this more effectively, as at the moment it seems that the organiser in Photoshop and Elements runs extremely slowly.
    Cheers

    Ben,
I suggest loading all your photos first and getting that straightened out before tackling Premiere. So first, start with a fresh catalog and import just the photos into it.
The PSE 6 Organizer has lots of problems generating thumbnails when you first load a catalog, but most people have been able to work through those problems reasonably quickly.
If you have lots of raw files, you need to follow the recipe in this article:
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b53a81
Otherwise, try rebuilding the Organizers thumbnail cache:
    1. In Help > System Info, find the folder containing your catalog.
    2. Exit PSE.
    3. In that folder, delete the file thumb.5.cache.
    4. Restart PSE.
    5. Edit > Select All.
    6. Edit > Update Thumbnail.
This can take a long time, roughly 10,000 JPEGs per hour.

  • Elements 9 Organiser Thumbnails

    Hi All
Im new to this forum. So would apprecite your help greatly.
I've been running this version of elements for 4 years now with no problems until recently.
When i open organiser now instead of seeing rows of small thumbnails as i used to i just get rows and rows of hour glasses. If  I increase the size to 5 pictures per line then they do load up but very slowly. Also if i make them full screen they do load very slowly again. Until this problem started about a week ago I'd had no problem with elements at all.
I'm using elements 9 on an imac 3.06ghz intel core 3 with 12gb ram
Any Help is much appreciated as this is a catalog with over 11000 images and associated Tags

    Hi Andaleeb
I've tried doing this and the problem is still the same, as soon as i reduce the size of the thumbnail to more than 5 per line in the organiser they just revert to hour glasses.
If I click on the hourglass the image is still there and loads up but very slowly compared to instantaneous as it used to.
I've checked all my Albums and the photos are still there but again if I reduce the size of the thumbnail they appear as hour glasses.
This problem as I said has only presented itself in the last couple of weeks.
I've tried reconnecting any corrupt files and no problems are showing up.
As you van imagine this problem is now becoming very frustrating.
Any further suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • PSE 11 Organiser wont display thumbnails only egg timer icons ?

I have been using PSE 11 for about 6 months with no problems, however, yesterday the prog froze and I had to switch off and re-boot. Now all new uploads are displayed in the organiser as egg timer icons. These will open, but only one at a time when double clicked on. I am on Windows 7. I have uninstalled PSE 11 and re-installed but the problem persists. I have uploaded a very small jpeg and got the same resuilts, which seems to rule out a RAW problem. Any ideas ?

    Hi,
Please try right clicking the thumbnails and choosing Update Thumbnail?
If this doesn't help, please try refreshing thumbnail cache as explianed here-http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/troubleshoot-catalog-issues-organizer-element s.html
If none of this works, please follow the answer of the thread-http://forums.adobe.com/message/4734171

  • Amended file thumbnails not showing in Organiser

If I amend an image and then save the file (using various formats such as tif, psd and jpg) in a version set  the amended file's thumbnail does not show in Organiser. It appears a 'broken file' icon.
How can I get it to show the amended image?

Ok thanks for that, at least I wont be chasing my tail.
I did install the DNG converter 8.3 but I still NEF files as a NEF icon. Any clues to what I may not be doing right there?

  • Re-Arranging Thumbnails In Adobe Elements 6 Organiser

    Hi folks,
Is there a way of re-arranging the order of thumbnails in my Adobe Elements 6 organiser. When I uploaded all of my images to the organiser, for some reason they did not come out in the exact order I had them within my "my pictures" file on my pc so I want to shuffle them around. I've tried to drag them out of position but that doesn't seem to work.
Any ideas if this is possible?
    Thanks
    Ian

    Ian,
Windows Explorer (which is probably what you used to look at the My Pictures folder) has a default sequence of File Name, whereas the Organizer primarily sequences photos based on date the photo was taken.
However, the Organizer does have a choice of viewing based on
    b Folder Location
which will use File Name sequence.
So you could use Folder Location view, but I suggest that you post a description of how you want to use these photos for which you intend to modify their sequence.
The PSE 6 Organizer has a function called an
    b Album
which can have whatever sequence you wish to establish by drag and drop. Whether that is the best choice for you will depend on your intended use.

  • Viewing Thumbnails in the Catelog Organiser

My Elements 8 has suddenly stopped generating thumbnails in the Catelog Organiser when more than 4 photos are viewed - how do I cure this?

If Update Thumbnail doesn't help, try renaming the following file - thumbs.5.cache to say thumbs.5.cache.old. This file can be found in you catalog folder whose location you can collect from Help >> System Info in Organizer.
It might take a while if the no. of files in the catalog is huge, to regenerate image thumbnails.
    Thanks

  • In Organiser, can the image filename be shown below the thumbnail (RAW CR2 files)?

In Organiser, is it possible to display the fiename below the image thumbnail (RAW CR2 files)?

Okay! Fixed now... after a little more digging, it turns out I wasn't putting the CR plug-in into the root folder....

    Thanks anyway!
