No thumbnails in timeline?

All,
I've been having some minor problems with my FCP5.
Firstly, whereas I used to have in my timeline small thumbnails of the clips i've used, these are now replaced by a white box with a + symbol. Why is this? And does this actually mean anything is wrong with my project?
Also, when I play a sequence in the time line the timeline no longer moves along with the playhead - that is until I press the Space key! I've adjusted the settings at the bottom of the timeline but no luck......
Any ideas???
Thanks
Alps

Usually just means the timeline isn't tall enough.
And does this actually mean anything is wrong with my project?< </div>
Could be, no way to know from here. Did you do something recently that would lead you to suspect you have messed it up?
Also, when I play a sequence in the time line the timeline no longer moves along with the playhead - that is until I press the Space key! < </div>
Space bar usually starts and stops playback.
Cropped Canvas?
I've adjusted the settings at the bottom of the timeline but no luck......< </div>
Which settings would those be? There are several.

What happened to the thumbnails in my timeline. Oddly, I have the media, but the thumbnail says media offline?!?

  • Reconnecting Media Doesn't Restore Thumbnails in Timeline

I have FCE 2.0.3 and have been working on a project for yonks (3 hour story animation). Recently, the image clips are not showing their thumbnail pictures. The clip is still operational, but it is a bit of a nuisance to find a clip without the thumbnail in place. I've tried double-clicking, rendering, reconnecting, but it doesn't seem to restore the cache for a stubborn few.

Just what the doctor ordered! I knew there had to be a handle to flush a cache somewhere! As you said, it wasn't a big deal, but I'm going to hand this project over to another team. So, it needed to look tidy! Thanks for making me look good! ; )

  • Some thumbnails in Timeline not showing

I opened a sequence (from Apple's FCP6 self learning course) and some of the clips show the thumbnail, others just show a blank thumbnail with a in the middle.
The same clips also have blank thumbnails in the Browser.
I tried "reconnecting" media, but nothing changed. The clips play perfectly well but I just don't know why some of them have blank Thumbnails.

sometimes the working thumbnail cache can become disassociated with the linked media ... in those situations the easiest resolution is to quit FCP, delete the thumbnail cache folder entirely, then reopen FCP ... that should force FCP to recreate any thumbnails that it needs.
the Thumbnail Cache folder is by default in your User's Documents > Final Cut Pro Documents folder but can be loacted anywhere you chose by specifying the directory in the FCP System Settings window > Capture Scratch tab

  • Refresh thumbnails in timeline just red frames: How?

It seems to me that in the past I have done this by trashing the preferences in the home library, but long ago. Now there doesn't appear to be any such thing in the library. How can I fix this? (FCP 7, BTW)

The user Library directory is hidden by default in Mac OS X 10.7.
    To bring it back temporarily:
With Finder as the active app, hold the Option key while clicking on Go on the menu bar.
    To bring it back permanently:
Launch Terminal and enter the following: chflags nohidden ~/Library then press Return.
You can also trash FCP preferences with this free tool: http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/

  • I open FCPX, see Events and Projects, then they disappear

    Here's what's going on:
    1. Was using macbook to edit, via an external drive (with events and projects folders on root level)
    2. Tried using Imac to edit, so I closed everything out,  Unmounted  drive and mounted it on iMac before opening Final Cut.
    3. Opened FXP X and found that one of the elements was simply not in any of the projects that used it. It is possible, I suppose, that During the creation of these elements I was using a clip stored not in the elements folder, so it was lost track of, but there's no red frames saying I've got detached Video.
    4. Tried opening the backup I'd made of events and project folders on my second external drive (events and projects folders also on root level.
    5. At first when FCP X opens, I see the projects and events that I want to see, including the missing event appearing in the project list thumbnail sorta timelines in the project browser, but within seconds, projects and events diappear, leaving FCP looking like there are no projects or events.  Clean Slate.
    6. I notice that the events and projects browsers at first show events and projects as being contained in the external drive. When all disappears, it seems to be because the external drive is no longer recognized or superseded by the Macintosh HD, which becomes the only HD shown in either browswer.
Not sure if the 1st issue (disappearing element) and the 2nd (disappearing events and projects before my eyes) are related.
    But at a loss.
    Thoughts?

Projects and events can disappear if they are exact copies, clones of other projects and events on other drives.

  • How to insert time line

In iMovie 10 how do I insert a time line reference.  In the attached photo I downloaded a movie file in which the time line shows up.  On the 2nd photo which is my clip the time line does not show up.  Thanks.

    Hey gator12345,
Thanks for the question. The markers you see in your first screenshot have time references for the start of each clip. Because your second screenshot is one long clip, that is why you do not see (or have the option to add) a reference point. You can split the clip to add time references to the thumbnails.
    Timeline
The area in the iMovie window where you create your movie by adding and arranging clips and making all your edits.
Each clip in the timeline is represented by a thumbnail or series of thumbnails.

  • Canvas displays stills zoomed in

Browser - stills appear correctly sized in thumbnails,
Timeline - thumbnails appear sized correctly
Viewer - double click on thumbnail in timeline and canvas displays correctly sized still
Canvas - still is zoomed in no matter what size I choose in the dropdown list.
What size will I get when the movie is generated?
    Rich

you might want to read up in the manual a bit to help orient yourself to what it is you are looking at.
If your still is high-res, it won't necesarily scale to your frame size, and so it might appear "zoomed in". However, when you open the still from the timeline back into the viewer, it should appear within a frame that matches your sequence.
I usually keep my canvas and viewer set to "fit to window" (shift-Z), or 100%. If you see scrollbars in the canvas you aren't seeing the whole frame, and realtime playback capability can be limited.
Activate one of the wireframe modes in the canvas and select the clip in the timeline. Can you see the whole bounding box and corner handles on the still? If not, zoom out the canvas (apple -) until you can. Grab the corner and resize your still to fit your frame. Unlike Photoshop, or any other program I have ever used, proportions are constrained by default, and holding shift will disable constrained proportions.

  • Thumbnail images on timeline clips turned red like media is not connected

But the media is connected. Is there away to get the little thumbnail photos back on the timeline?

    Quit Final Cut Pro.
Trash the contents of the Thumbnail Cache Files folder.
    Relaunch final Cut Pro.

  • Missing thumbnails in the timeline

I'm learning how to cut video in the timeline, and noticed that only the first three cuts result in a thumbnail image, while the last 4 cuts are displayed by a small grey box with a + symbol in the center. Am I doing something wrong here? How does one get all of the thumbs to show?

    See if this helps.

  • Timeline thumbnail images

Okay, so I am a little embarrassed to post this, but I have been a FCP user for about 6 years and have always wondered if this is possible.
When I lose a link to a movie file in any project, if the file is in use on the timeline, the timeline thumbnail displays the red and black "MEDIA OFFLINE" image. For some reason, when I reconnect the file, the thumbnail continues to display the offline warning. Is there a way to refresh that little image? I have tried saving the project after reconnecting the file and restarting, but it always comes back up with the OFFLINE warning still there.
Of course, I can live without having refreshed thumbnail images, but sometimes it gives clients a little scare. Just curious how, if at all, this might be possible.

I've always found giving the client a little scare is a good thing. Keeps 'em humble

  • Timeline thumbnails not updating.

Hi Guys i have a problem with the the thumbnail images of clips in my timeline.
I was working on a low res copy of a 10 Bit Uncompressed Pal project.
When i reconnected the media only a handful of the thumbnails updated. They still show the red offline media view even though all the clips are reconnected and play in the timeline.
I have trashed preferences tried reseting the poster frames of the clips in the browser but no avail.
    Any thoughts people?
    Cheers Kev

Close FCP. Trash your thumbnail cache file... you can find it by looking where it's being saved in the scratch disk settings in the bottom half of the window. Then reopen FCP... they will rebuild.

  • Timeline Thumbnail Picture lost

I crashed yesterday during an edit session and had to hard quit FCP. When I relaunched everything came back OK, but I noticed that my thumbnail images in the timeline was red(as if offline). But when I play the sequence, everything plays OK...i just can't see each clip in the timeline except with the red offline graphic on it.
Is there a quick way to recover the thumbnails without reediting the clips back into the timeline???
    Thanks,
    Paul

You might try deleting the contents of the folder "Thumbnail Cache Files".

  • Timeline thumbnails show media offline, but media is not offline.

Short version: I opened a project today that I had been working on for a long time. Some of the thumbnails in one of my timelines show up as the red "Media off-line" image. But the media is not off-line. I can play the clips just fine. Everything else seems (more or less -- see below) normal except for a handful of these off-line thumbnails. It's not a disaster, but it makes it hard to find my way around. And I'm worried that it's a sign of something more serious wrong under the surface.
Long version: I'm using an older Macbook Pro with an ESATA expresscard. My media is all on external ESATA drives. My project file is on the Macbook's internal hard drive.
I use my Macbook as a desktop machine. The computer sits on a dedicated shelf on my desk. My cat makes a habit of sleeping on top of the machine. (You can probably guess where this is going.) Most of the time this is not a problem, but about a week ago he decided to stretch in just the wrong way and pushed the expresscard out of its slot. After screaming and throwing the cat across the room, I saved the project file, remounted the disks, re-opened the project file, and breathed a big sigh of relief when everything seemed to be fine. I quit FCP again and put the project on hold for about a week.
Today I reopened the same project file and the trouble started. At first all the timeline thumbnails showed up as media-offline, even thought all indications were that it was on-line. In addition, all my audio and video renderings were gone. I re-did them, and after a while some of the thumbnails restored themselves as well. But not all of them.
All of which has me a little flustered.
Has anyone encountered anything like this before? Is there a way to force FCP to refresh the timeline thumbnails? It's hard to find my way around now that all the clips look the same.
    Thanks.

i've experienced this before, but i can't really remember how i sorted it,
i may have deleted the thumbnails out of the scratch disc, or it may have been that i switched the timeline view to name only saved and closed down, then opened it up again and switched them back on to refresh
but i know on no refresh thumbnails button in fcp itself

  • Thumbnail corruption in Events library and timeline

I am seeing thumbnail corruption in my events library and timeline.  Several thumbnails of jpg images that I imported into the library are showing up as corrupted - color bands and whatnot.  When dragged to the timeline the same thing.  But when I play them in a storyline, everything is ok.  I can ignore it but has anyone else experienced this issue.  I am using 10.0.3 on a MacPro running Lion.

Hi Tom, Thank you for your reply. Please forgive my ignorance. I did try to find the answer here but I am new at this.  Could you direct me to that thread please? Yes the external hard drive is used for time machine and I did see something at one time regarding an issue but evidently it didnt sink in or stick. The drive is a g-raid I have had for several years used on a macbook pro but now I have a new imac and fcpx. works fine with all other apps, when the drive came out of the box it said preformatted and just ran with it.
