No thumbnails in vault???

This morning the hard drive containing my main library called it quits. Not a fun predicament, but of course I had everything backed up including my library using a vault on another volume. So I restored from the vault. Got two messages stating that there were inconsistencies in the database. Rebuilt the database. Same thing.
But on top of that, it appears that none of the thumbnails were part of the vault backup. They now all need to be rebuilt. Not a big deal for online images - just time. But my entire offline archive is now without thumbnails! is this normal?
I relied on the vault to allow me to be up and running quickly after a full restore. I relied on it being an exact copy of my library. I'm now facing hours of work to get back to my initial state. Somehow this fails to live up to the promise. Am I missing something?

Jade -
this is totally normal behavior ... thumbnails and previews are not stored in a vault backup ... i can only presume that this is for a few reasons ...
1 - space ... this saves space that could possibly be used for other, more valuable things, now this is subjective though ...
2 - recoverability ... thumbs and previews are "easily" regenerated ... your main images are critical, while small thumbs and previews not so much ...
3- time ... yes it adds time after recovery but initial save to vault and subsequent backups would be longer if it included thumbs and previews ...
that is what i can think of for reasoning, but it would be nice to give us a choice on whether we include or exclude them ...

i feel your pain/frustration as i once did a restore of 75K+ images and waited overnight for the thumbs to come back ... but again, i did not lose a single image ...

  • Rebuild of thumbnails on vault retore took over 16 hours?

I have been slow-rolling my conversion to Aperture awaiting 1.1, and have loaded only 3,000 images into Aperture to date. Most are jpegs I shot before converting totally to shooting Canon Raw in 4Q2003. About 500 are raw 20D files loaded just to test the raw performance and quality.
This weekend I needed to restore the images from the vault after accidentally deleting a major (jpeg) project. The restore went fine until it started rebuilding the image thumbnails in grid view. I found out, as previously posted here, that you have to go into each project manually to initiate the thumbnail rebuilds.
Then, to my considerable surprise, the rebuild was slow as molasses in January! It is now 8:50AM US Eastern time on Monday, 3/13. I started the rebuild at 9:30pm last night and it is still rebuilding tumbnails. I did the jpegs first, which took a very long time in projects with 300-400 images, then started the camera raw projects which are taking even longer. In fact, it is doing the Raw thumbnail rebuilds so slow I thought the application had stalled on several occasions.
What is going on here? Is there a parameter I've missed somewhere? Is there a system setting I've missed? This kind of restore performance would totally eliminate Aperture as my primary image mangement tool, even though I love the application concept, features and UI.
PowerMac G5 Dual 2.0GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   4GB Memory, lots of free disk space, no other apps running.

Sorry, I mis-typed and mis-calculated. (It's been a long night.) I started the restore at 7:30PM last night, not 9:30, and it has been running for 14 hours, not 16 as posted.

  • Is it possible to exclude thumbnails and previews from a vault?

I think in Aperture 1.5, vaults did not include any preview or thumbnail files, but only the files containing metadata, adjustments etc. (and the masters, unless referenced only)
Somewhere along the way to 3.0 this changed so now previews and thumbnails are backed up each time you update your vault.
    This has two BIG drawbacks:
    - the vault becomes much larger than necessary (I always generate large previews)
    - the update process takes much longer as more files need to be copied.
On the other hand, I do not see any tangible benefit of including the extra files - provided I back up both masters and the adjustments, I should be able to regenerate thumbnails and previews after a restore following, say, a fatal hard drive error.
(If I chose to delete all previews and thumbnails prior to creating a vault, I assume that the vault would be significantly smaller, without losing any information that cannot be recreated by  'generate thumbnail/preview')
    Is my understanding correct?
If so, is there a way around it?
If not, can we please have this option in Aperture 3.5 or 4.0?
    Thank you!

Hi Matt.  You raise an interesting point.  What you say makes sense to me.
My general response is:  external drives are cheap.  Buy what you need and don't spend any time trying to "save" disk space.  IME, the administrative overhead is far more costly than the upfront equipment costs.
Here are some specific answers (as I understand how Apeture uses Vaults).
There is no way to exclude Previews from Vaults.  Each Vault includes all extant Previews.
Each Vault is a differential back-up.  Updating the Vault should update only those files that have been added, changed, or deleted.  Unchanged files -- including Previews -- are not backed up anew each time you update a Vault.  The amount of time it takes to update a Vault will vary based on the number of changes made, and should have nothing to do with the size of the Library or the number of files in it.
You can test your hypothesis.  Delete all your Previews, and create a new Vault.  Let us know what you find out.
Suggestions for enhancements should be made directly to Apple via "Aperture→Provide Aperture Feedback".  The forum is -- officially -- strictly for user-to-user interaction.

  • Larger thumbnail folder in vault than in library--Why?

I have aperture 3.4.1 and recently realized that I had accidentally imported several movies and a few photos as masters.  I relocated the masters so that the movies and photos are all now referenced, and not stored in the aperture library.  This caused the size of my aperture library to go down considerably.  However, when I updated my vault, it still is huge.  My aperture library is now about 39gb but the vault is about 55gb.  I made a new vault and it is about 35gb.  Looking at the contents of the vaults, I see the big difference is in the Thumbnails.  The size of the Thumbnails in the old vault is about 29gb, but it is only about 12gb in the new vault (which is about the size in the library).  I've tried updating the old vault a couple of times, but it doesn't get smaller.  Is there a reason aperture is keeping such a large thumbnail folder?  And is there any way to get aperture to update the old vault so that it more accurately reflects the library, or do I need to simply delete it and start over?
As a side question, why does aperture store thumbnails and previews in vaults?  Couldn't they be easily regenerated if I needed them?  Is there a way to tell aperture not to store the previews and thumbnails when it is making vaults?
    Thanks,
    Ric

Contained in the Library but not in the Vault:
1024px thumbnail of every Version (this is what you see in the Browser pane and in books, web gallery and light table Albums),
Preview files at whatever size and compression settings you've set up.
It's quite normal for the Vault to be smaller than the Library.

  • Waveform cache, thumbnail cache and autosave vault

Sorry but I still have a couple more questions.
Should i be moving the waveform cache, thumbnail cache and autosave vault over to external hard drive with the media? And where and how are the project files stored on my internal system drive? Just trying to organize the location of everything before I go any farther!

Hey digginin to my Mac. I am where you were a bit ago, and I think I understand your question about where to set those cache files, and I am a little unclear on this as well.
I am probably making a mountain of a mole hill, but I believe you are talking about that bit at the bottom of the window of the Scratch Disc pane of the System settings. I am working my way through Tom Wolsky, and he seems to say to set those three things (waveform cache, thumbnail cache and autosave vault) to go to the external. It's a bit unclear to me though. I currently have them set for my documents folder on my MBP. And in my documents folder is a folder called "Final Cut Express Documents" in which are six folders (Audio Render Files, Autosave Vault, Capture Scratch, Render Files, Thumbnail Cache Files, Waveform Cache Files). I set up a scratch disk, and captured some video to it. It currently has those same six folders. Everything okay so far?
I have just set up another scratch disk, which will actually be my main scratch disk, and will be used for a pretty big project involved many hours of video. I haven't captured any video to that yet. It only has three files (Capture Scratch, Audio Render Files, and Render Files). I guess the other three get created when I capture some video to it. And I guess I can select that particular scratch disk when I go to capture the video.
Am I in the ballpark over here? Thanks in a advance.

  • Beginners guide - Library vs Time Machine vs Vault?

I am new to Aperture 2, and up until now have had a workflow system that's involved importing images and exporting them into folders, and have no idea what Apertures Library is or does? I am using it as a default setting at present.
I have never used Aperture 2 'til this month, and am exporting all my Masters into a RAW folder as well exporting them as TIF / JPG versions of every shoot I do. But I am confused as to what the Library does? Where are the images I am importing in terms of the Library? Am I doubling up saving RAW versions? Are they stored already in the Library?
I am also operating Time Machine which is also new to me. Is this backing up the Aperture 2 Library?
If I delete the images from a photo shoot I have saved as > Export > Masters and Export > Versions as both RAW (CRW) files, TIF files, and low res JPG files, will the photos remain 'stored' in the Library?
If the answer to this is yes, then once I've sent a client their TIF and JPG versions, I can delete these folders and rely on Aperture Library, Time Machine and a hard copy on DVD of each photo shoot. Right? or Wrong?

When you import into Aperture, you have a choice between using "Managed" masters or "Referenced" Masters. Managed masters are actually imported into the Aperture library, so if you also export them to another folder, you are doubling up. Referenced masters are maintained in another location and Aperture simply keeps track of them and creates thumbnails and previews in the Aperture library.
So, to avoid doubling up, you can either: (1) import all files as managed files and not export them, or (2) move them first to wherever you want to keep them, then import them as referenced files.
Either way, you should of course have a separate backup scheme. If you use referenced files, then Time Machine works fine. Originally, there was a problem using Time Machine with the Aperture library, but I think that has been resolved. Still, I exclude the Aperture library from Time Machine and backup my Aperture library to an external using the Vaults feature in Aperture.
The Aperture manual pdf, which can be downloaded from the Aperture support site, has good explanations of managed vs. reference files and of workflow backup.

  • Restoring Aperture Library from Vault

    Hi all,
I hope someone can help.  I recently had my 'Drobo' die on me as two discs failed at the same time.  I also have a copy of my Aperture Library backed up in a Vault.  I have carried out a 'Restore from Vault' and my new  external HD shows 1.5TB of data (same as my original library).  When I open Aperture, I can see all my folders and projects, but each project has no photos in it.  I have tried repairing the database and rebuilding the database using the option key on start up, but I repeatedly get to approx 83-89% complete and my system hangs and I get a message that I have run out of applications memory.  I then get the Spinning wheel and eventually have to reboot the iMac.
    1. How can I recover my data?
    2. Is there anything else I can/should do? Am I doing anything wrong?
    3. Is there anyway of recvering the files seperately of the external hard drive with other data recovery software?
I am running Aperture the most uptodate version of Aperture 3.4.x, on OS X Mavericks, on a 3.4GHz i7 iMac with 12GB ram.
One point I may need to add, I was backing up to Vault when my 'Drobo' unit failed, although based on the size of the vault, I think it had finished backing up, although can not be certain.
Any help/assistance or advice would be greatfully received as I have lost my library, its parity due to two failed drives simultaneously and possibly a corrupt vault(?).
Thank you in advance for your help.
    Paul W

Will rebuilding the library place the images into their correct projects/folders?
Will rebuilding return the images to their edited version state?
This library is the restored library from your vault, correct?
What seems to be missing are all of the 'version' images processed in Aperture.
In what way "missing"? Are all your projects empty or are you seeing broken thumbnails of the missing images in the projects?
I am afraid, rebuilding will not be able to reconnect the "recovered" originals to the versions. The images are in the "Recovered" project, because Aperture does not know the link to the version.
If your missing versions are still showing thumbnails, however correpted, you could use the lift&stamp tool to transfer the adjustments from the unusuable versions to the recovered versions.
But that would be a bit daunting for 14000 recovered originals.
I'd try something different - quick and dirty emergency measure: Try to open your vault directly on the drive where it is now without restoring it.
Keep the restored library you are now having save and don't delete it.
Change the filename extension of your vault to ".aplibrary", this will turn the vault into an Aperture library and try to open it directly in Aperture by double clicking it. This needs to be done in-place, on the Drobo-attached drive where you originally created the vault. Do not move it.
Aperture will now try to open the vault as the current Aperture library and upgrade it. There is a slim chance, that the links between originals and versions will remain intact, if the vault is not restored to a different volume but repaired in-place on the original volume.
Frank, what do you think? Should Snurge first try to repair the permissions on the drive?

  • Please help me with vaults!

    I have 2 quick questions:
When I export individual projects into an external hard drive, there is an option that says "consolidate images into exported project." The manual said something about referenced masters. What does this mean? Are referenced images and master images the same thing? If they are, I don't see why you wouldn't check this option.
I want to create a backup, but every time I choose vaults, my aperture breaks and tells me to reopen it (since there is an error). I'm getting a little frustrated so I think I will export all my projects individually. Question: Is this just as effective as a vault? My Mac has limited space, so I plan on deleting my projects and keeping my these projects into an external hard drive (in case I ever want to retrieve them again). Based on this info, what do you suggest? Individual exporting or a vault backup?
    Thank you so much

When you import photos into Aperture you can import the photo into the Aperture library or reference the photo which creates a thumbnail in the library, but leave the original where it is.
Originals could be on a removable, external, where ever.
I personally import the photos into the library.
This vault is my backup, which I maintain on an external drive.
At any rate a referenced file is one where the Aperture library does not contain the master file only a "reference" to it.

  • Disaster of (almost) Biblical proportions -at least for me- restoring vault

I had my RAID drive, which contains both my Aperture library and my images, ©®@p out on me this past weekend. My library is almost all referenced to the files on this RAID drive. Some files, like the TIFF that were created by Aperture for me to edit, were stored in the Aperture library as I had not gotten the chance to move them out via "Manage Referenced Files." Of course, I had a vault or two set up, although they were only slightly out of date from the crash.
So, first thing I did was to, after I recreated my RAID drive and copied all the images back on, is to try to reconnect all my images. This is turning into one giant PITA. It seems that Aperture will only reconnect the visible images in the browser and not any images that are stacked underneath them. Is that correct? I don't understand why wit would not just reconnect all the images, whether they are stacked or not. This is a big problem.
Also, Aperture only seems to be recreating the thumbnails of those images that are visible in the browser. Why isn't there a feature that will let me recreate ALL thumbnails by choosing an option, like creating previews?
And, when I chose to reconnect one TIFF file, Aperture was telling me that the file was one size (say, 70mb at a certain res) and that when I chose the EXACT image to reconnect to (which was indeed a larger TIFF file at nearly 300 mbs and a larger resolution), Aperture would not let me reconnect. It seems somewhat obvious that Aperture would not let me reconnect it because of the discrepancy in the file stats, but the image I wanted to reconnect to WAS the correct image. It was a TIFF file that I had edited in Photoshop and saved back as a much larger file. I don't understand what is happening here. I know that it the file. Aperture is even telling me that that is the file by showing me the path to the original file which I exactly duplicated with the images recopied on the new drive. Yet it is still giving me different metadata from the file and won't let me reconnect. Ouch! Any thoughts? How do I reconnect this image?
You know, I found that the vault restore is working okay, but the loss of all the thumbnails put a serious kink into this restoration. If there was an option to keep the thumbnails and/or previews in the vault, that would go a long way to speeding up recovery. The other option I have, in the future, is just to sync the Aperture library to a backup copy using Chronosync.
Anyway, if anyone can help me with this reconnection issue, I'd really appreciate it.
    Antonio
P.S., My RAID failed, or rather had severe problems, after I installed the 10.4.9 update. I don't know if there is a direct connection, but be careful updating . And don't do it when you are working on a job.

I don't know if this is going to be of any use. I tried a number of expiriments related to rconnection of external masters...
At first I had trouble reproducing your issue, because Aperture follows masters as you move them around the HD. Then I simply archived it.
Then I added a different TIFF file into that directory, and tried to re-link - no luck, as it was different.
Now the interesting thing. I quit Aperture and renamed the different TIFF to the same name as my original master image. Now all of the sudden Aperture thought it was the original master image, even though it was quite different.
So I have two things for you to try, based on my expiriments:
    1) Open up "manage referenced files" dialog holding down Option. Now select the file you want to re-link. Now click on Hide Reconnect Options. Now click on Done.
The Option may do nothing. However using that process, it seemed to take my selected change even though I could not click on the "reconnect" button.
    2) This may be a part of what I did - try renaming your master TIF file to something slightly different. Now try naming it back and re-linking, either as normal or above, and see if it takes. If that works you could batch-rename the TIFF files and name them back.
I hope something there works for you.

  • Aperture 3 incomplete vault restoration

Background: I just recently had to wipe my hard drive clean. I first backed up my library using Aperture's "vaults" system and put them on two external drives  and stupidly the RAW files no where else. I realize now that I lost all of my RAW files, but seeing as how I just started shooting RAW around a year ago, I'm hoping to salvage the JPEGS and move on from there. I have no idea wether my library was referenced or managed (I still don't remember the difference and it makes me mad that I should have to go through all this trouble just to organize my photos!) and this is part of the reason I'm moving away from Aperture (it's so complicated and disorganized!).
Problem: I tried to restore the vaults in Aperture with both drives plugged in. After it was finished, I could see that all (or from what I could tell) the projects seemed to be there, but not all of the images. In the browser viewer, there are many blank spaces and other images that say the image is not available. I've tried restoring a few times and updating the paths, but nothing seems to be working.
I realized I've already lost a lot, I really hope I can save what I KNOW I BACKED UP! Any Aperture experts would greatly be appreciated. I've talked to many people and not a whole lot of headway has been. HELP!

    Mr D.
I understand I can't get the RAW files back, since I did back up my entire (managed) library to vaults, I'm assuming that the JPEG copies or whatever I was looking at in the library (not the masters) would be backed up.
Ok.  You half-answered the question.  We should take it to be true that you cannot get the RAWs back?
Aperture does generate thumbnails for use within Aperture.  Thumbnails are stored in some proprietary formatted files I think.  (Note there is no real documentation for end-users about the topics in this conversation.)  It may also generate previews based on your preferences.  The previews are in fact small JPG versions of your files.   I was quite surprised the other day to find that Aperture does back up some of these items to a vault.  I was surprised because, as a software engineer, I saw no benefit to backing up both the photos, and the low-res thumbnails of the photos.  After all, in normal circumstances, you will just be wasting backup space, as you can regenerate the thumbnails and previews from the originals in the case of a normal vault restore.  Now I see that your non-normal case may be why it works this way.  Of course, I do not know if the thumbnails are actually restored. I just know what I saw when I looked in my vault.
So the bad news: you may be able to find the previews and/or thumbnails but it will be difficult to find them, and you will have to do all the work.
Note, that what I am about to tell you is dangerous.  If you change anything, you will wreck your Aperture library.  Reading (Ie., copying) is ok.  Writing (Ie.., deleting, moving, changing) is not ok.
So, if you use Finder to "Show Package Contents" of your Aperture library, you will see a folder called "Previews".  If you had previously elected to create Previews (which is a directive that Aperture 3.2.2 is not very good at following, BTW), you will find a hierarchy of folders organized by date.  I believe the date is the date of the photo, but it may be the date of the import.
At the end of each folder structure, you will find some JPGs.  These are probably what you are hoping to find.
To answer your second question -- individual photos are managed or referenced.  It is neither a library nor a project attribute; it is per photo.

  • Aperture 2.1.4 problem - have thumbnail but not full-size image

I'm relatively new at using Aperture. I have been downloading photos from my Nikon D200 into iPhoto and then modifying those photos in Aperture. This has worked fine for several months. However, after installing v 2.1.4, I can no longer access the images I've altered in Aperture, although the thumbnail images are still present at the bottom of the screen. How do I access the images previously modified in Aperture? Are they stored somewhere in iPhoto?
I've been hesitant to download images from the camera straight into Aperture because I'm still not as proficient as I'd like with the program. For whatever reason, there are few training opportunities for Aperture here in the US....another issue.

Thank you for trying to help me with the problem. Let me back up a bit further so that you can better understand my problem. Here are some of the problems:
    (1) I had been downloading all my pictures (Nikon D200) into iPhoto. After selecting a few that I would like to make adjustment using Aperture, then only I import versions of it into Aperture. The way I had been importing images is by going into Aperture, go to File show iPhoto, select photos by dragging them into album that I had created in Aperture. Is this the correct way of importing photos from iPhoto into Aperture?
    (2) After making adjustments in Aperture recently, the next day I went back into Aperture to see them, all the pictures in the viewer is replaced by " Unsupported Image Format". Why Aperture let me do all the adjustments if this is unsupported image format? It only tell me this, the next day after I had tried to view all the photos with adjustments that were made earlier?
    (3) Dozens of adjusted photos (versions) from my albums in Aperture had also disappeared. I had not use the vault in Aperture as yet. The question is where are all my adjusted versions being stored? My Aperture Library is shown to be empty! I thought at the very least, all my versions is stored in the Aperture Library. How do I store versions in this library?
Yes, my workflow may seems convoluted at the moment, using iPhoto as my reference and only dealing with versions in Aperture. The reason for my madness is quite simple ( I thought), I need to understand Aperture really well before importing photos directly into it and bypass iPhoto altogether. With all the problems that I am facing with Aperture at the moment, I am not quite there yet.
    All help is greatly appreciated.

  • Aperture 2 thumbnail quality grainy on imports

I am migrating to Aperture because it is lightning quick in managing with 1000s of images. I am particularly pleased with how it allows quick access to high-quality thumbnail images of photos in a large project. I should note, that my imports are referenced to folders elsewhere on the DB. I do not copy masters into the vault.
My issue: Aperture has variable/flaky treatment of imported project thumbnails. If I choose the Import icon arrow, the chosen imported folder photos show high-quality thumbnails. Conversely, if I chose the file menu option "Import Folder as Project", imported folder photos get grainy thumbnails--but then become high-quality IF I select individual photos, which then get properly rendered.
I generally like the "Import Folder as Project" method for importing folders because it is quick and it properly named the aperture project with the title of the referenced photo folder. The Import icon button requires several additional steps and is cumbersome for importing 100 photo folders from the HD, but it at least has the virtue of giving me what I want-which is high-quality thumbnails a la iPhoto.
Does anyone have an explanation for the different treatment of thumbnails? Program preference settings are same for both approaches, yet the thumbnails spit out by the imports are qualatatively different.
I suppose a variation on the above question would be, how to get Aperture to automatically generate high-quality thumbnails involving multiple photos? Currently the only option would be to manually select each photo one-by-one, which is impractical.

    I just installed Aperture 2 on a PB G4 and 10.4.11:
it works and manage D300 and D3 raw...
The only problem is that trial version will not convert your previous 1.5 library (there is no option yet to upgrade in the Italy store).

  • Vault size smaller than Library

I have 30k referenced photos (188 gb) with a Library size of 11 gb. The Vault size is only 1.7 gb! This makes me nervous. In the past, both have been about the same size. What is happening?? thank you

Here is more detail: I started with a 7gb Library, with about 6gb of managed files and limited referenced files. I then brought in all of my old files with Import Folder into Project, which added 28k files. After that, the Library went to 16 gb (seems large!). Next I relocated the managed files out, about 6 gb, and the Library shrunk to 10 gb. I did a new Vault store and the Vault size shrunk from the original 7 gb to 1.7gb. I can also see along side of it the Deleted files, 6gb, of those moved out.
If I look in the Vault at a given folder (from the Import Folder into Project), its size is 313mb; the same folder in the Library is 2.2 gb. Looking at a given imported project, Library has a folder of 17mb, AP.Minis of 41mb and AP.Thumb of 76mb. The same file in the Vault has a folder of 20 mb and several little 8k things. Clearly thumbnails were generated although Preview was turned off, and tested that I could not drag thumbs out.
    Hope this helps, thanks, gib

  • Weird thumbnails issue

I thought this one had gone away, but...
I noticed recently that some images had a strangely squashed appearance. Checking them further reveals that they are an image with the wrong thumbnail attached. Simple recreating it fixed the problem.
It's the way it's happening that I find most intriguing though, as it's only affecting a very specific range of images. Oh, and I saw this exact same thing happening back in Aperture 1.5, so it looks like a deep rooted bug somewhere (and this is a newly created Library since then too).
Most puzzling is this does not, and never has, affect any images I have taken with a digital camera, and imported directly off the media card, or any images I have imported from Email. It's only affecting images that have been scanned and rotated.
The process involved is that I batch scan some images from negatives on my Epson 4490, so that these are saved to a folder. Then I import them into Aperture into a Project for each film roll, do any minor edits needed initially, such as rotate and crop.
I can then go back into that Project later, although I'm not sure exactly when the defect occurs (whether I've reloaded Aperture, done a restart of the Mac, or updated the Vault), and notice that some images have a squashed appearance. On inspection, I find that a rotated thumbnail has been applied to a non-rotated image (the wrong image as well). I hit Recreate Thumbnail, and all is well again (actually using Rebuild Preview works as well).
This has happened regardless of the file type, as I've used both JPG and TIFF for my scans over time. It's also regardless of scanning software used, until recently I've been using the EpsonScan software, but this recent lot I've been using VueScan.
On the odd occasion I have had just a few images where I could not recover the correct thumbnail or preview, and had to reimport the images, as it seemed to have corrupted the master. Admittedly that was after I'd tried a defrag on the drive (and why I'm reluctant to recommend routine defragging). But again it only affected scanned images.

This seems to be a general issue: when Aperture 3.x has trouble reading a Preview image it reverts to lo-res thumbnails as a fallback strategy. I have found that selecting the image causes the Preview to be re-generated as the version is rendered for display in the Viewer.
It's not always obvious that you're viewing thumbnails in the Browser if you've got the images displayed at a small size - except for images with a portrait aspect ratio, where the thumb isn't rotated (since the missing Preview image was already rotated before it was generated.) Then the wierd distortion is very obvious.
I think there are a number of different problems that can lead Aperture 3.x to lose track of its Previews. Forcing Previews to be re-generated can appear to cure the problem but it's just fixing the symptom; eventually the underlying problem may disconnect Aperture from its Preview images again and you'll see the distortion problem re-appear.

  • Restored from Vault - extra images appear?

    First some background:
I was having stability problems with 1.5 so I decided to back it out.
I backed up the app and library and then deleted them.
I installed all the various versions till I was back up to 1.1.2.
Then I restored a vault that I had updated just prior to my 1.5 upgrade. (So the vault was completely up to date)
After the restore was finished I noticed images showing grey boxes insead of thumbnails. (Although the thumbnails would rebuild when I selected the image)
I switched to the Library "All Images" view to see if this was true of all images where I noticed my problem.
    Problem:
    - There are a bunch of JPG images named FILENAME - Version 2 that show up in the "All Images" view. These images appear to be the .JPG sidecars that got imported with my .NEFs when I imported a folder of images. However, before I could have sworn that the .JPG that corresponded to a .NEF did not show up in Aperture.
The .JPGs don't appear in the album view (Which is where the .NEF+.JPG's were originally imported into).
Is there anyway I can prevent the restore from vault from creating these new versions of the .JPG's?
Aperture also won't even load some of these .JPG's. It only loads the embedded thumbnail and "Loading..." stays on the screen. Not sure why, because preview loads them just fine. I don't think I care about this part since I don't want them.

Apparently no one cares, but I figured it out myself.
    It's a bug with Aperture
The Vault does not restore correctly if it contains images that had both a Master Raw and Master JPEG.
If you try to restore a vault that has images that were imported with both a raw file and a jpeg file the restore will create multiple versions of the image. One for the raw file and one for the jpeg instead of only having one image that contains both the master raw file and master jpeg.
    To reproduce:
    - Import a folder of images that contains pictures that had both a raw image and a jpeg.
    For instance:
    DSC_2428.NEF
    DSC_2428.jpg
    - Take a note of how many images are in your library.
    - Create a vault
    - Update the vault so that it contains all the pictures.
    - Go to the File menu and select Vault->Restore Library...
    - Select the Vault that you just created.
    - Continue the vault restore process until it has completed.
    - Now look at your Aperture library. You will see that you have twice the number of files as the jpeg's will show up as additional files with "- Version 2" after the filename.
