No thumbnails of .AVI files

I have CS5 Production. Adobe Bridge has problems with thumbnails from time to time. I have cleared the Cache, and told it to regenerate thumbnails. Right now, I can't get it to build previews for .avi files. What's weird is, I know it has done it before. But now it does not display them, no matter what folder I go to. It just shows the generic .avi thumbnail. When I click on it, It does show it in the Preview Window. But not the Thumbnail Window.
Any ideas?
thanks,

This problem has been around for years.  Funny thing is that with the CS5 upgrade some .avi files show thumbnails and others don't.  Like most video format there is no standardization.  THe AVI is just a wrapper for the video and  what is in it can vary.
It is all about CODECS.  Some users were downloading codecs to fix the Bridge problem, and  that caused problems with Premier.  So one of the Premier engineers got involved to solve the problem by getting Bridge to show thumbnails for .avi video.  That was about a year ago and have seen nothing yet on any development.
If I want a thumbnail I have resorted to a workaround that is perhaps a little time intensive.  I do a frame capture and save a jpeg.  Then I stack this with the .avi and have the jpeg on top.  You can get a thumb, but not perfect solution.

  • No Thumbnails for AVI files in organizer

My AVI Video clips are not showing thumbnails in the PSE 11 Orgazizer.
Here is what I have observed as I have been troubleshooting this:
    The files are MJPEG.
When I double click on it in the organizer window, I get audio, but no video.
If I open the file for edit in Premier Elements, the video thumbnail shows up in project assests and the video correctly plays in the Premier Elements editor.
If I double click on the files in Windows Explorer they open up in Quicktime Version 7.
The thumbnails for the files show in up windows explorer when I browse to the folder they are in.
I selected a file in PSE, chose 'Export to New File" and the file that I created by doing that showed a generic Quicktime icon without the thumbnail in windows explorer. When I double click on that file it correctly plays in Quicktime.
Selecting "Update Thumbnail" has no effect.
Thumnails are corrctly showing for .mov, .mpg and .mp4 file types.
Any one have any ideas what is going on with the organizer that might be causing this beavior or is this a know limitation of PSE Organizer. What is the point of having the organizer supporting video If I can't see the video without opening it in the Premier Elements Editor?
I am providing the "Systems Info" if that helps anyone.

I do not use Organizer, but instead Adobe Bridge (included with some other Adobe programs, like Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and Premiere Pro), or ThumbsPlus (Cerious Software), and find that some AV formats/CODEC's just do not display thumbnails. I have had that issue with some, like MPEG-1 files, some WMV files, almost anything with DivX, or Xvid.
I have not used any MJPEG files, so cannot comment on them, but have helped others Import and edit those (never tried to work with any in Organizer, Bridge or ThumbsPlus), and in those cases, it usually boiled down to having the exact MJPEG CODEC installed. As each camera mfgr. seems intent on tweaking the MJPEG CODEC, it is normally possible to Import and edit, if THAT particular MJPEG CODEC is installed, and usually from the camera's utiltiy disc. Other times, the generic Morgan, or MainConcept MJPEG CODEC's have worked - though that seems to be less often, as Nikon, Panasonic, and others, keep tweaking.
As for the display of any problem AV files, it is usually an inability of the organizing utility to find a proper display, though in some cases, there IS a display, but the first Frame of the AV file is black, with a Dip-to-Black (in this case basically a Fade-in) Transition.
Good luck, and I wish that I had a fail-safe way to always display a thumbnail for ALL AV files, and even better, the ability to set the Poster Frame to what I wanted. So far, no organizer utility, that I have seen, can display thumbs for ALL AV formats - some will handle some AV formats/CODEC's, that others will not, but none has been perfect.

  • Why does my quicktime player verson 10.2 somtimes read avi files and other times it wont recognize them?

Why does my quicktime player version 10.2 sometimes read AVI video and other times it will not recognize that same file. I have a video card that sometimes it will read then the next time it recognizes the card but will not open the video. Message says "quicktime does not recognize this file.
Whats up with that ??? Any help will be most appreciated!

AVI is a container just like MKV, WMV, MOV, and MPEG. It is possible to use many different compression formats aka. codecs in an AVI container.
Think of the container - AVI as being an envelope, and the compressed video in it as a letter. The letter may be in a language you cannot read even though you know how to open the envelope.
Historically QuickTime did have some built-in ability to use AVI files and some formats in those files, this used to be further improved by installing the free Perian (for Mac only). However with Mavericks Apple have removed the ability for QuickTime X aka. QuickTime Player 10 to use AVI files, it now really only accepts MPEG4 or H.264.
It is still possible to install QuickTime 7.6.6 in Mavericks and if you use it and Perian rather than QuickTime X you can still use various AVI files.
Note: Mavericks also now no longer shows previews or thumbnails for AVI files for the same reason.

  • AVI files unplayable on iPhoto 9.0

Most of my AVI files which use to play fine on iphoto have been converted to 0.01 second files showing up on iPhoto!  These files are all prior to 2010 (2002 to 2009) and show under iPhoto Library/originals/2009.  Under Originals I have three folders for 2009, 2010, 2011.  The prior year avi files show up under 2009 as small files (probably thumbnail) all less than 150K!  The folders which contain 2010 and 2011 avi files work fine and are large in the MB range in size.  What happened to the avi files that were in my other folder (actual large files!)?  I run OS X 10.6.8 and do the usual updates and just noticed these files changed in the last four weeks.
    Thanks

What seems to be happening there is that the videos have been replaced by jpegs created as previews of them.
How this happened, I've no idea. Time to restore from your back up.

  • Avi files missing from view in Organizer

I recently installed Premiere Elements 8 and Photoshop Elements 8.  I captured 1 hour of video from my DV camcorder  The capture resulted in 43 avi files being transferred to my Vista PC.  The files all show up fine in the Premiere Elements editor project view and timeline.  But only 23 of the videos show up in Elements Organizer.  I have tried reimporting all the files to Organizer, but Organizer says they already exist.  I have selected to show all files, but no luck.
I looked at another folder where I had captured 18 avi files with the trial version of Pre8, and Organizer only shows me 10 of the files.
I've tried everything I can think of to make sure I'm not filtering these files from view.
    What am I missing?

The files are all in the same folder on the second of two internal 500 GB hard drives.  They are all together in the same folder, labeled as "My Project 01.avi" up to "My Project 43.avi"
I figured out a way to see the missing files in Organizer by selecting the "thumbnail" view instead of the "batch" or "folder" view.  What I discovered is that all the files that have been "missing" appear as stacks of files, but I can't see an option to unstack them like you can do with photos in Photoshop elements.
For example, I have a file that I couldn't see in Organizer called "My Project 11.avi".  When I look at this file in the Premier Elements 8, under the project view, it shows as a movie with duration of 2:59:22.  But when I look at it in thumbnail view in Organizer, it shows a stack of files.  When you expand the stack, you see three files, each labeled with the same filename, "My Project 11.avi"   The files are 1:21, 0:08, and 1:31 in length, i.e the same total time.  Collectively, they make up the same clip as I see in PE8.  When you pick batch or folder view, the clip disappears for the Organizer view.  The same exact scenario holds for 20 of the other clips in my folder.
I'm really confused by this....I don't want to have to hunt down clips so I can tag them.  And I don't understand why the clip is split up and stacked.  When I captured the video, I opted to split scenes by timecode, but these are continuous clips shot without interruption.  I did not select auto-analyzer.
So why would these clips appear as stacks?  It doesn't look to me like the user can even select to stack videos.
And either way, why would Organizer only show them when thumbnail view is selected?
    thanks

  • Small Flip video AVI files - can preview in Organizer but not Elements

    Hi all,
I just spent $110 to buy Adobe Premiere Elements 9.  I installed it to my Dell Vostro 1520 Intel Dual Core 2.2 GHz, running Windows 7 Pro.
I have a few small (5-10 seconds each) Flip video .AVI files (standard definition) to use for learning.
To learn, I brought the little .AVI files into Adobe Organizer, and can now double-click on each thumbnail and see the video play clearly, no problem, in the Organizer preview window.  All well and good!
Next I created a new Project in Premier Elements, and used the Add Media button to reference the same little .AVI files.  But when I attempt to preview them in Premier Elements by double-clicking on a thumbnail, I instead see a green/teal-colored rectangle where the video should show in the preview window, although I can hear the audio fine.
Can anybody help me?  Any thoughts or ideas will be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    Steve --
I have Windows Live Movie Maker.  It offers many of the same features as Adobe Premiere Elements 9, but not all of them.  For example Premiere Elements 9 offers Picture-in-Picture, nicer titling features, etc., etc.  That's why I've just shelled out $110 to buy Premiere Elements 9 (whereas Windows Live Movie Maker is totally free if you have Windows 7 Pro).
Windows Live Movie Maker is a PC-based video editing program, and it does not require and does not use use Apple Quicktime.
So I don't understand why you say Quicktime is a necessity.
But I do appreciate your reply and your thoughts.
I'm still looking for someone who has successfully used Adobe Premiere Elements 9 to edit Flip Ultra (standard definition) .AVI files.
    Thanks.

  • How to see thumbnail for avi videos in finder?

I see thumbnail pictures for mpeg files but for all avi files it's just a blank white icon.
Is there some kind of video player I need to install to get this preview thumbnail to appear for avi files?
I have MIRO installed which plays them but still blank white icons in finder window.
    Thanks

    Scott,
Thanks but I got that far already setting my movie folder to show icon previews which it does.
But my problem is all the .mpeg movies DO show a picture on the icon, BUT only that extension shows an actual picture, where all my .avi movies only show a blank white icon with no picture from movie.
So my guess is that I am missing some kind of plug-in for the avi movies?
    Thanks
    Patrick
My avi movies default to QuickTime. I just changed that to VLC and the icon is now the VLC cone. The actual icon for many videos seems to be the first frame in the movie. I see this with .mp4 as well as .avi and .mov.
Interestingly after I reassigned QT to the avi I had changed to VLC, the VLC icon remains. Maybe a reboot will change it back?
Anyway, I like the first frame, usually the title to be the icon, but if you use VLC as the default you can change it to the cone.

  • AVI files in imovie '08

I know you can import AVI files, but iMovie does not import automatically the AVI files out iPhoto that ***** because I must copy now all my movies I already have in iPhoto. And my photocamera makes only AVI files. Anyone a solution to let the movies in iPhoto so you doesnt have to copy or import them??

Obviously, I think, the update is the culprit but I don't know how to solve it.
The same way you should always analyze AVI problems -- look at the codecs used. While it is always possible that the update may include different codec trapping routines, I doubt that they would eliminate a working combination on purpose. While I don't use AVI content on a regular basis simply because it is an outmoded container whose software developer abandoned it about a decade ago and it frequently contains compression formats which may or may not be available for the Mac, OS X, or work on a Core Duo machine, many users do. Unfortunately, they do not bother to learn about the various problems attendant with AVI use.
    1) Only Some AVI content will be compatible at all. For instance, the Casio M-JPEG/DVI ADPCM files are not compatible because the audio cannot be edited in iMovie '08. On the other hand, the combination of M-JPEG/Integer from a Z40 is compatible and imports on my system under Leopard to iMovie v7.1 without problem. So you first step is to ensure that the files in question do, in fact, contain the same compression formats.
    2) To do this, open the various files in the QT Player and check the "Format:" line in in the inspector window. Note if they are all the same and if not, note which ones work and which ones do not.
    3) If codecs/settings are all the same, used to work but no longer do, then check for QT component conflicts as detailed in numerous other discussions in this area.
    4) With regard to files previously imported "no longer render," this would sound normal if there are component conflicts present and/or a problem with thumbnails which, among other things, are likely use to "index" the original content during playback and export.
    5) If all else fails, can you provide a file "snippet" for testing on an external system? This may tell us/you if the problem is general or limited to just your systems/configurations.

  • Iphoto 08 and avi files

I am still using iphoto 08 (version 7.1.5) on my G5. I downloaded all my pictures and avi files from my Nikon d90 and it seemed fine. I watched each avi once and they played fine but now they are AWOL! All i have is 156k thumbnail. Are they gone forever? What can i do? Those videos were for a work project.

Download and use  Find Any File to search for all file with Name ends in ".avi"  on your hard drive to get a picture of where they are.

  • Bridge (CS5) stopped previewing avi Files.

All of a sudden can't preview avi files (dv-avi mainly) in bridge. Other files show ok.
I get the thumbnails but no preview. Bridge is a part of CS5 Production Premium.
Used to be ok. Haven't made any changes to the PC (Win7 Pro 64bit)
    Any idea?
    Thanks

Movie fles can be tricky.  I also have some avi files that have no thumb and others that do.  However, they all play.
Check the edit/preferences/playback and see if the correct boxes are checked.
Also, check Quicktime and see that it is up to date.  If it has been updated recently perhaps that has caused the problem. Believe Bridge uses Quicktime for video preview.

  • Thumbnails for mkv files

After installing Perian and Movist (a video player software), I believe that I have solved most of the problems for mkv files in Leopard. I can play .mkv videos in either Quicktime or Movist, and I can tap the spacebar to quicklook the video when browsing in Finder. But one thing that I cannot change is that the thumbnails for these files remains a generic icon, unlike .mov files that have thumbnails of the screens of the movie. Thus when I'm browsing with cover flow, I can only quicklook the mkv files in pop-out window, rather than playing it in the upper part of Finder as what I can do with .mov or .avi files.
Is there anyway to improve this? I know Mac may not support .mkv files as good as .mov, so I'm wondering if there's any third party softwares that I can rely on to resolve this problem? I'll be grateful if somebody could shed some lights on this.

Hope someone knows it. Thanks again!

  • ASPECT ratio of AVI files

I have AVI files shot on a widescreen camcorder as 16:9. They show OK in WMP, but Photoshop Elements 6 Organizer shows then as squashed 4:3, in both thumbnail and when played. This is driving me nuts - is there a solution? I have widescreen Quicktime files from a 'stills' camera that show OK.
Premier elements shows the files OK.

  • Thumbnails of AVI movies in Finder

What can I do to get the first frame of AVI movies displayed as thumbnails?

I hope there is an easy way because I have lots of clips...

Thanks. I only use QT and I don't want to get and install other players.
(I try to install as little software as possible!)
Is there another way to change the thumbnail to the first frame?
I have several movies that are associated with QT as the default and they show a first-frame icon.
One is an mp4, another is a wmv, another an m4v, and yet another is an avi. All have first-frame icons are are asscociated with QT, so I don't understand the problem you are having.
When you right-click your avi file, and select "Open With" is QT listed as the default?
If not, then do what I originally wrote, selecting Other and then selecting QT and checking "Always open with" and see what happens. If "Always open with" is not checked then the icon may not associate properly with the app.
Again, all my QT movies have the first-frame icon.
    What icon do yours have?

  • Avi files got corrupted

I recorded a series of avi files with two different Canon cameras while in South Africa in January. When I downloaded them, they played fine, and were really quite terrific.
Somehow, several months ago, possibly in doing software updates, the file sizes got reduced to somewhere between 7KB and 140KB. Now, when I try to play them, QT launches, and all i get is the opening frame, and the duration shows as zero.
What could have happened to them? Are there invisible files floating around on my hard drive?

    Glen:
What you're trying to play is the jpg of the first frame that iPhoto creates upon import. Are you must double clicking on the thumbnail in iPhoto when trying to play?
Control-click on the thumbnail and select Show File. When you get to the file via the Finder check its size to see if it's the full sized file instead of the thumbnail.
If you exported the movie file out of iPhoto and didn't use the Format = Original option the exported file will be a jpg or whatever format is selected instead as a movie file.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • IMovie Corrupted My .avi Files

Multiple .avi files were imported from iPhoto into iMovie to ultimately make a DVD (using iDVD). The DVD project worked perfectly. Unfortunately, I can no longer play the .avi files (in iPhoto). For some reason, every file I previously imported into iMovie is corrupt. Through iPhoto, I can see the thumbnail of the .avi file, as well as the file info (length of movie, file name, date, size). Everything appears ok, but the files will not play. I even attempted exporting the .avi files from iPhoto onto my desktop to see if they would play. They did not.
    All ideas/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    Mark1604
Given the the Get Info window tells you the file is 30mb, it suggests that it's in there somewhere...
Here's a couple of things to try:
Select one of the file in iPhoto and right- (or Control-) click on it and select 'Show File' from the resulting menu. This should open a Finder Window with the file already selected. Does this work?
The jpg's you're finding are most likely thumbnails that iPhoto is using to display in the iPhoto Window.
Finally, as to playing the files: Check back to your camera manufacturer's website and see if they have an update to their software. There are literally hundreds of variants of the avi format, so my search for a solution would start there.
If that doesn't work, try using an alternative player like VLC.
    Hope this helps.
