No Thunderbolt on Mac Pros?
We just bought 4 new Mac Pro towers...like $20,000...and the 4TB external Thunderbolt RAID unit (for video editing work mostly)
Now we find out the Mac Pro's don't have thunderbolt? Really? There is no adaprter card or anything?
You simply CANNOT use thunderbolt on a Mac Pro?!
I guess Apple is saying Thunderbolt isn't for pros...just like FCPX

ThunderLink is an expansion adapter for the ThunderBolt computer bus interface, and adds support for the SAS, SATA, fibre optic and ethernet interfaces. The adapter can support throughput speeds of up to 10Gb/s[1].

PCI Express 4.0 On November 29, 2011, PCI-SIG has announced to proceed to PCI Express 4.0 featuring 16 GT/s, still on copper technology. Additionally, active and idle power optimizations are to be investigated. Final specifications are expected to be released in 2014/2015.[25]

Apple Thunderbolt Displays, including the stand-alone display as well as the Thunderbolt iMacs, cut compatibilities with all previous standards, including VGA, DVI, and DisplayPort.[2] As such, they cannot be connected to computers lacking a Thunderbolt port, including pre-2011 Macs and the vast majority of Windows PCs.

Thunderbolt for Mac Pro?
Any news for thunderbolt in Mac Pro?
Anxious is what all the people asking over the last year and thinking it was needed
Your Mac Pro has more bandwidth than TB supplies
And you can learn about Thunderbolt from Apple, Intel and Wikipedia
Intel will this fall offer motherboards (PC segment) - Apple had Thuderbolt locked in for a year.
TB interface connections cost a lot more than some realized and are hoping that will go down.
A search of forum from Google would turn up a lot of threads and reasons why it makes sense on laptops but not much for us. And it is still too new and buggy even. -
Can I connect a Thunderbolt Display To the MacPro?
The ThunderBolt display requires a Mac that was made with a ThunderBolt port.
The Mac Pro 65lb tower is not currently a member of that club.
It will not work, and there is no known way to make it work. -
I have a MBP "17/ 2011 and a Thunderbolt Display "27/2011 . Does anybody knows if there will be an adapter to use a Mac Pro/2007 with the TBolt display ?
You can't. TB displays only work on iMac and others like MacBook line with motherboard support.
So you need "old" not proprietary, and lots of those to choose from. -
When will I have thunderbolt for Mac Pro?
I have Quad MacBook w/ Thunderbolt, But When will they release a Mac Pro with Thunderbolt? Anyone have any idea or heard any rumors?
Thanks BobbyHonestly, I wouldn't even worry about Thunderbolt at this point. Yes, it has amazing potential, but there's hardly any devices that use it. Even USB 3.0 isn't really taking off. Let the people who just purchased the hardware for it be the guinea pigs. A lot may depend if the Windows market invests in the tech. It's going to be much more difficult to sell an external HD that only connects to macs.
For now, USB 2.0 works fine (Firewire if doing video editing) and even my internal Blu-ray burner works using a SATA cable. The transfer rate for both is quite acceptible for me.
I DO wonder if a plug-in card would be possible. I'm not tech savy, so not sure if the PCI Express slots supports that speed. -
When thunderbolt on mac pro?
Any rumors on when a new Mac Pro will come out with thunderbolt?
Most people for now are asking if there are any PCIe cards, and looking for 3rd party support.
Not only is the "when will Apple release" sort of frowned upon strongly, and always unknown until it happens, it depends on Intel of course, and whether it is a deal-breaker.
ie,
If and when you need something is always the right time.
New = gee, are there any surprises in store? Will it take 3-4 months for OS and driver support as well as the 'gottcha" for 3rd party software and device support?
TB is big news for laptops. We've always had ability to add PCIe SAS/SATA, and not sure what it will mean to a Mac Pro and video link.
USB3 use to get asked a lot, and people wanting to add USB3 storage though those seem to have higher price and only slightly better than an eSATA controller interface. -
Hello. I was wondering if there was ever going to be an expansion card for thunderbolt. i would like one, even if it doesnt run at the full 10 GBp/s.
Right now there is no Thunderbolt card for the MacPro avaiable.
Not from Apple and not from any thrid-party manufacturer.
Maybe some will come up in the future... But only the manufacturers will know.

I have 2 LaCie Thunderbolt 2 5Big drives. I have been using them successfully with my mbp. I just purchased a Mac Pro and plugged them in and they will not mount. I am stumped as how to get the Mac Pro to recognize them
This is the Mac Pro black cylinder, late 2013 model?
Have you tried one at a time? Have you tried different ThunderBolt ports?
What display are you using and what port is it plugged into? You may want to be sure your drives and your displays are not on the same bus.
This article show which ports are on which ThunderBolt Busses:

Will future Mac pro's Include thunderbolt
I'm considering buying a 12 core Mac Pro, and i would like to have thunderbolt technology included instead of using Solid State HD's.
will this be available in future modles and when?No one is going to answer that here because no one knows.

Also, FWIW, even if I had a mac pro with TB, I would stiil use a SSD for a boot drive. One doesn't preclude the other. -
Will my LED 27 Cinema Display work with the new Mac Pro?
Will my LED 27 Cinema Display work with the new Mac Pro?
Mini DisplayPort (like 27" LED Cinema Display) is a direct subset of ThunderBolt (like Mac pro late 2013). It plugs right in and the display portion "just works", no adapters required.

Mac Pro (Late 2013) Keeps Crashing Please Help
My new Mac Pro (Late 2013) keeps crashing when I use thunderbolt devices.
My set up is as follows:
8-Core
512 SSD
Dual AMD 700 GPU
64 GB Ram
It usually occurs when I am using any of the Adobe programs for video editing and rendering. I have check disc utility and found no errors. Needless to say this is getting quite annoying as I use this machine for work and sometimes can't get through anything because it keeps crashing.
What do I do?Just happened again. This is what it says:

Help! Got a kernel panic while my 2014 Mac pro was in sleep mode.
I'm having weird issues with my new mac pro while connected to the pegasus2 r4, via thunderbolt. I suspect the issue is related to conflicting power management settings from my pegasus vs the mac pro. Following the advice from pegasus, I turned off the promise utility power management settings. I noticed the external drives would turn on spin up once every hour for one minute while in sleep mode. I assume this is a typical behavior of the "power nap" setting being on. What do you guys think?
Occasionally, while my external drives would spin up in sleep, I'll have a kernel panic that will reboot my computer. Is this due to power nap or the pegasus drives?and here mis my kernel panic log

Kernel Panics (late 2013 Mac Pro)

Pro tools 11 installed
I've been experiencing kernel panics for a few weeks now. Since this is my business computer (audio recording/mixing Pro Tools 11), I need a quick solution. I've already tried apple phone support, Avid phone support and izotope (thought it was a Pro Tools 3rd party plug in problem, but it's still restarting after deleting the plug-in). I've even tried erasing the hard drive and re-installing the OS. Apple claims it's not a hardware problem and that it's a Pro Tools issue. But, Avid hasn't found any problems (besides suggesting that it may be the plug in company, izotope..specifically ozone 5). Any help is much appreciated!

I have a new Mac Pro (2014) with latest updates. Any time I use my SSD it randomly restarts itself. Could be doiing anythign as simple as transfering one file or something like multi-track recording audio. The drive is Kingston SSDNOW KC300. (SSD is formated OS Extended) I am using a Apricorn SSD to USB adapter.
Here is the report from the last time it crashed.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
Can a Mac Pro (2.66 ghz duel core (4cores)) be upgradable to support Thunderbolt displays and other devices. Does this need to be done through the Graphics card expansion or a additional card to be inserted?
No. There is no way to upgrade any Mac Pro older then the cylindrical 2013 Mac Pro to ThunderBolt.
The requirements of Thunderbolt require a totally redesigned motherboard and chip set rather any plugin cards. These motherboard were never developed for older Mac Pros.
