No Time Code!
I was trying to import video from hi8 using log and capture, while doing so, I wasn't getting a time code. Subsequently I wasn't able to import into Final Cut. It imported just fine into IMovie though. Any idea what i'm doing wrong? Also, After importing to IMovie, I whittled away some footage and imported it back to Final Cut as an XML file. I did all my editing and when I wanted to export to quicktime it gave me an error message: "improper.......".
Thanks in advance!
Roger
In FCP, what are your Sequence settings? What are the clip's specs?
When you try to export to QuickTime, which method are you using (QuickTime Movie or QuickTime Conversion)?
If QuickTime Conversion, what settings are you using for the export?
Also, please repeat the entire error message ... it's cut off in your original post.

WAITING FOR TIME CODE....again
Hi, when I try to capture from DV device, the capture window appears "PREVIEW DISABLED" I can remote the dv device, mark time code in or out, play tape, pause tape, the time code in the capture window run and is the same taht the tape, but when I do batch capture, cpture clip or capture now, the preview window of catpure says : "WAITING FOR TIME CODE" "DEVICE MUST IN VTR MODE WHEN DEVICE CONTROL IS ENABLED" and when I abort the capture this message apperas: "THIS OPERATION COULD NOT BE COMPLETED AS THERE IS NO VIDEO", Quicktime pro is unabled to capture too, but IMOVIE capture without this problem. I download the firewire sdk from developer connection of apple and use AVCVideo Cap, and no problem for cature, so , my Firewire or dv devices are ok, with DVHSCap I capture PRO HD JVC very well.
Resume , I think there is a problem with quicktime and DV format, My Ibook G4 with FCP 5.0.1 capture from DV devices OK, without problem. If anybody resolved this please comment with us. I work to day with FCP 6.0.4 and quicktime 7.5 and Mac os 10.4.11 and 10.5.4 the problem is afected my PowerPC G5 and my powerbook intel. Another point of interest is that this problem is RANDOM, some times I can capture from DV devices in the first time, some times I can't capture.Hey AL
How ya doin buddy?
"Either way, try an Easy Setup>DV Converter, to match your video standard (Pal or NTSC)."
Yep - did that
Yes actually my older Sony TVR-310 camcorder IS a digital unit which can also play back analog tapes.
As I'm getting my way around now in FCE, I'm coming to some conclusions in regard to FCE's capture capability.
First let me say that I've also tried capturing some footage in FCE with my other Sony TVR-950, and have had dropped frames, and also breaks in time code.
I thought dropped frames were strictly a PC issue?
Anyway, it appears to me that FCE is VERY sensitive to time code issues NO matter which camera is in the chain.
In fact, I've also read here where folks have a lot of trouble with their Canon GL2's as well. Some of you have even suggested to do your captures in a cheaper Mini DV, or a clam-shell playback machine. This conserves the heads on your GL2 as well.
But why would FCE do better in regard to capturing and time code, with a cheaper Mini DV Camcorder? Perhaps I'm missing something here?
Perhaps iMovie doesn't care about the same issue?
Now my main question is:
Ok I'll use iMovie6 HD (tried and true), to capture ALL my footage and just save the DV files to be edited later (imported) into FCE.
Does this sound like a viable solution to FCE's time code issues?
Will my iMovie captures be JUST AS GOOD as if they were done in FCE?
Thanx so much guys!

How do I get time stamped Wav files created in L7 to lock to time code?
Hello everyone,
I did a search about time stamping audio files and was VERY happy to discover the "broadcast wave" format timestamps audio files! So I'm running tests, but cant seem to get logic to actually place the audio file according to the time stamp!
Method: I'm currently scoring a film, and have each cue as separate logic files. To sync Logic's timecode and the TC window burn, I set in the "sync" song settings that bar 1 play at the start of the cue (no offset). For example, If I want to start writing a cue at 1:06:27:05, I just tell logic that bar 1 starts at 1:06:27:05 and start writing. Both logics TC & The window burn TC match perfectly. When I bounce, I choose my bars and bounce as a "wave," which creates a file with time code stamped. I verify this by looking at the file in the audio window, which shows a clock icon, as well as the specific smpte time code if you select the file before importing into the audio bin.
From here, how do I get logic to automatically place the audio files according to their time code? I've tried "import audio" directly into the arrange page as well as dragging the file over from the audio bin and neither work. I've also tried then "cutting" these and "paste at original position" hoping it would read the time code, but instead just pastes it where it was originally imported, not according to the time code.
So I'm stumped! What am I doing wrong?
thanks in advance for your help!Highlight the regions and then from the audio menu select "move regions to original record positions"

No time code overlay media encoder cc 2014
activating time code overlay in export settings/effects and the overlay is not visible. All other settings in effects are working. Applications manager tells me the app is up-to-date.
encoding an mov file to h.264.It is very strange. I don't know what to test next. I encounter the same issue using the Timecode video effect in Premiere Pro. If I tick Field Symbol in the effect controls I see the Field Symbol rendered in the view port. The Field Symbol is also visible in the video file if do a media export. I run Premiere Pro CC 2014.2, 8.2.0 (65) Build. I have the same issue when I run AME or Premiere on my laptop. See attached screen grabs from both AME and Premiere. Thank you for your help. A frame with time code could not be found error
Hey all
So I just started using Speedgrade with my Premiere CS6 timeline exported as EDL, all RED (R3D) footage. When I input the EDL it only loads about 50% of the clips and pops up a red box like this:
So after a bit of Googling, the only solution I found was to ensure the time code base match, which I changed from 24fps to 23.976 which is exactly what is in my Premiere sequence. I then had to find the clips and drag them onto the gray box where it says "Reel not loaded". No big deal, took me all of 5 minutes.
I had also thought the above error was due to me having some high FPS clips in my timeline (120fps to be exact). However, even with no clips in the reels panel showing "Reel not loaded" when I stop at a couple of clips on the timeline I get this:
And as you can see in the reels panel the clip it is referring to has indeed timecode in that range.
Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? I'm pretty sure it's related to the whole time base thing and it's dropping frames, but can't see how this can be true now that I've changed all instances of 24fps in the settings to 23.976 and that's what the Premiere sequence is showing, and also what is in the RED files.
And here's the metadata for the clip as shown in Red Cine X:
Cheers.Facing many of the same problems over the last four days. It's been a total nightmare. Working on Speedgrade CC with .R3D files and conformed the timeline to match the 23.976 footage, yet I'm still seeing clips get rejected, along with dropped frames which both carry over to output files and seem to cause the program to crash.
Would love an explanation. -
Time Code displayed on an External Monitor? Is this possible?
I'm sure this is a dumb question, but is there a way to view your FC time code on your footage through your external monitor? I selected the show time code overlays from the viewer but it only shows up on the monitor on the computer screen and then goes a way when you play a clip. Is there something I’m missing that will allow me to watch the time code on playback, and on an external monitor? Thanks.
BIG TIME...by Digital Heaven:
http://www.digital-heaven.co.uk/bigtime/
This will allow you to have TC display on one of your computer monitors. You cannot have it display on an external monitor...not on any NLE I know of. Not unless you are outputting to a deck and you have TC on the deck (the SUPER out on the back) routed to the monitor.

Hi All,
I have a project coming up where my audio is coming from old fashioned
cassette tapes.
I'm thinking the way about doing this would be to run my audio from the player into my dv deck and capture the audio via fire wire through the usual log and capture method. The only thing is the log/capture seems to always be looking for time code. Is there a way I can capture this non-time code audio and create my audio files? To do it the way you are trying, you must go to
AUDIO VIDEO SETTINGS > DEVICE CONTROL PRESETS and choose
NON CONTROLLABLE DEVICE.
The only problem with this method is that you would not to be able to recapture the material again with a timecode that relates to your project.
If that is an issue then you might consider transferring the cassettes to DV tape first, then capture from that. (no need to select non controllable) When the project is complete, you can safely delete the media files knowing that they exist on tape as a timecode source that you can recapture should the need arise.
Good Luck

Why does timer code (by dbasnett) no longer work splendidly?
Using timer code supplied by dbasnett back in May2014, I was able to see FPS of near 500 for a simple animation. Now, with a more recent 64bit laptop Win 8.1 - - I run the same code - - - and see poor results similar to standard timers - - where the
results are "stepped" - - -like either 16FPS or 32FPS or the max I can get is 64FPS.

And here is the code that dbasnett supplied - -

End If
End Sub)
A = -1
Loop While Not slp.WaitOne(20) '<<<<<<< the timer interval
Me.Invoke(Sub()
Me.Close()
End Sub)
End Sub
End Class
With timer interval set to 20 - - - - it used to give about 50FPS (which is should), but it doesnt anymore - - - it gives 32FPS.
Can anybody shed some light on what has gone wrong? My present laptop also a I7 is 4 years younger than my old laptop and has far betters specs. Why is it slower? or why is this timer code no longer acting the same?

And I don't think it is a graphics issue, because I altered the program to only manipulate a bitmap - not activate a paint event - - - but it still performs poorly. I only get 32 Cycles Per Second instead of 50 CPS. See - this is how I altered the

PS - I changed the code so that it does not deal with bitmaps or graphics at all - - - but still no improvement.
Maybe it is Framework Version issue ??

Can't find time code from original footage (captured from mini-DV tape)
Hi. I'm Old to mac, new to FCE, good at iMovieHD ('06). Just got FCE (4.0.1).
Imported some footage (a few random practice clips) from a mini-DV tape I shot, but I can only see the time coding for each clip, not where that clip begins and ends in terms of the entire one hour mini-DV tape.
My log is for the entire mini-DV. So this is a problem.
I suppose I could re-import the entire 60 minute mini-DV tape from the start, but shouldn't the time code be embedded into each frame?
Help much appreciated.
d the hYou can try the free filter FCE Timecode Display with its default settings to display the original timecode of each clip.

Is there any kind of TIME CODE app for iMovie?
It would be so much easier to edit, if you had a time code on, especially, things like long interviews. Am I missing something? It seems so obvious that this would be very useful. I have a Sony AVCHD camcorder, and the clock is set. Is there a data code I should be seeing, or is there a way to add it to the events?
Thank you. There is no professional time code as in Final Cut Pro.
However, you can see the time metadata by clicking View/Display Playhead Information. When you cursor over your event, you will see the timecodes.
Also, it is helpful to go into iMovie/Preferences and put a check next to "Display Time as hh:mm:ss:frames". This lets you edit to the nearest frame (1/30th of a second). Without this checked you can only edit to the nearest tenth.
For long interviews, be sure to check out the [Cutaway function.|http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/imovie_09stone.html#cutaway%20pip] -
Recording an external SMPTE Time code during capture
I have several diffrent devices that I am trying to Sync using a common Smpte Code Generator. How do I record that external SMPTE Source while capturing in Final Cut Pro HD? I am currenly using a AJA Konal LS card for my capture device?
You can't with Final Cut Pro unless you capture with a tape machine as has already been stated.
If you have no tape machine you need a provision to insert the timecode into the rs422 datastream, like the [Horita TCI-50|http://www.horita.com/smpteltc.htm#RLT-50] or an [Adrienne|http://www.adrielec.com/box20lit.htm] interface. You may also want to investigate RP-188 timecode which SMPTE says "Transmission of Time Code and Control Code in the Ancillary Data Space of a Digital Television Data Stream." You probably can use [Aja's VTR Exchange|http://www.aja.com/support/kona/kona-lse-ls.php] software which will capture embedded RP-188 timecode if the video you are using does contain RP-188. -
I understand the value of the time code in projects but am baffled by what it exactly means when I click on a project when it starts off with 10 hours or so, wherever that may come from, and what exactly is its use, except for measuring the time and frames.

Yes, it is very useful.
Just an example: in multicam clips, if they have timecode it can be used for synchronization. -
Design-time *code*... is it possible?
We all know of design-time CSS files. But is there such a
thing as
design-time code?
Reason I'm asking is that on one site, files are assembled
via includes.
Header, title, content, and footer. 4 files being included
into one. Except
Header and Footer are really two sides of the same coin :
various divs and
tables are opened in Header and then closed in Footer (title
and content are
self-sufficient).
Would it be possible for me to have "design-time" code that
closes the tags
opened in Header so I can work on the file *without*
re-assembling it with
Footer? (and vice versa) because right now... if I need to
edit Header or
Footer, I first need to copy both into one file, work on it
there, then
re-save them separately for inclusion as "header" and
"footer".The other option would have been to create a php file that
takes a template
and inserts the content into it via the url, such as
.com/parser.php?file=content.html
But a programmer friend of mine told me that was the wrong
way to do it,
that it would slow things down. Although I'm not sure how 3-4
includes is
any less slow than the quoted method.

Hi all
Does anybody have an idea how to get FCP to display the correct time and key code of the clips I am importing in my timeline? The clips are telecines the contain both video tc and film frame numbers.
ThanksI was given file based stuff. The tc cinema tools sees is of by two frames. The key code once you set it up (according to the burned one) is OK. In Quick time, in one machine the time code shows correctly in the other the tc track is not checked and cannot be read or extracted. Once in FCP, in one machine the code is off by a minute, in the other, the file cannot even be imported getting the message that the file (the same as the file name) is missing and the movie will not play. I tried everything I could think of, i.e. resetting FCP and QT (via preferences and cashes) getting rid of third party codecs I have leaving only the fcp ones. The material was given to me as 8 bit uncompressed video but whatever I do the problems remain. I even converted it to dvcpro 50 and imported the tc (in the machine where qt can read it) but the problem remains. FCP either does not read the code correctly or, in the case of the second mac, does not import the file. I guess this is how one can get hooked to drugs...

Time code changes when reconnecting media
I have been working on a project for over year. Recently my computer was stolen when shooting abroad and now I had to buy a new one (leopard op sys) and reinstall my software to continue working. As I recapture the lost media a warning window pops out: "you are about to capture non drop frame media to a drop frame clip......". My media was shot with a panasonic 100a (24p), and since I started the project I have been capturing with the DV NTSC setting (it captures 29.97 drop frame). When I recapture, the clips in the browser appear as reconnected but the TIME CODE changes, and clips on the timeline referencing that media still appear offline (others don't even if the referenced clip is the same). If I try to reconnect from the timeline it tells me that media start and end do not match. I will appreciate any suggestions.
Are you using a different camera/deck to capture this time than you used the last time?
