No timecode while capturing (sometimes)

Hope someone can help me with this issue..
I have a G5 running FCP 5.1.2 with an AJA IO board connected to my decks (Beta SP and DVC pro), most of the time a need to capture long clips, so I do a capture now on 15 min periods. But sometimes (especially when using the DVCpro Deck a Panasonic AJ-D640) it capture without time code, an then on the next clip it’s do. So I need to do a matchframe with the tape and modyfiy the TC manually to make it match… But with 50 or more clips it’s became insane…
Yesterday It do it (for the first time with the Beta SP) and the problem now is that either if I modify the Timecode on the clip it wouldn’t save it, so nest time I open the project the clip appears with no time code..
I check the quicktime file and doesn’t have a time code track, I try to add it, but doesn’t know how.
Also I know that FCP doesn’t like Panasonic Decks, AJA send me a patch to solve control deck issues… and it works, but still have the same issues with the Timecode.. I was thinking that I happened only with DVCpro, but now seams to do it also in Sony decks..
Could someone can point me in the right direction to solve this issue….

but fwiw, there is a piece of free software out there, called Sebsky Tools which you might want to try for ading timecode tracks to your QT files

In your camera LCD screen or in the log and capture window.
You cannot see the timecode embedded in the video itself

'Locating Timecode Break' while capturing

I got the software update that claimed it would fix the time code break error while capturing using Final Cut Pro. I'm using an AV Converter to do this. These are the setting I have it on, as recommended by the directions on the box the converter came in.
Device Control: Firewire NTSC
Capture.input: DV NTSC 48 kHz
Time code break usually occurs at around one minute, sometimes much later, other times almost instantly. I've got a legit copy of Final Cut Studio 2, and my converter always worked fine when I used it with Final Cut Express. Tried cleaning tape heads, but that didn't seem to have any effect. I'm open to any suggestions at this point, and I'm hoping it's just something simple that I might be overlooking.

check the following:
you are capturing to an external drive and not the sytem drive
capture settings for non-controllable device
correct version of Quick Time for your combination of FC Pro and Mac OS
the analogue to Firewire box settings (if any) are set to NTSC, for Firewire output and analogue input and set to composite or Y/C as appropriate

Have timecode in clip name while capturing

I'd like to see the timecode information in the clip name while capturing. Is this possible?

Or for DV try DVMP Pro. The capture files can be named with the inclusion of:
- timecode (of file's first frame)
- date and time
- user bits value
- sequential number
Or you can run it retrospectively on existing capture files and it will add the date and time to the filename or change the file's Date Modified property - this can be done for DV, HDV, MOD and AVCHD files.

Is it Possible to Mark Chapter while capturing from camera?

While capturing from camera there are incidents (like obvious mis-speaks, etc.)that I would like to mark during the shoot when they happen to facilitate finding them while editing.
Is this possible to enter a chapter marker or something during live capture?
Open to any other suggestions.

I am using FCP 7.0.3.

After about a year of manually noting the time code and notes, I finally found a solution to the problem of marking chapters during a live shoot.
Final Cut Pro X will not allow you to mark a file while capturing it, probably because it does not actually change the raw file. However I just found a piece of software that will do the trick nicely. It is called Cut Notes. The only catch is that you must have an iPad to run it.

You start Cut Notes at the same time that you begin to capture, and it will start a timeline, identical to the one in FCP. Then for every edit point, you simply tap a key to insert the timecode along with either a pre-determined note or manually entered note as to the event. For example I have a note key that says MisSpeak, the opertator just taps it when I mis speak and it saves the time code and the MisSpeak title into a text file. I have another note key same for "walked off screen." You can Edit any number of note keys you may need. Then when finished, Cut Notes will email the file to your computer, simply import it to FCP as chapters using a free utility available at the same website. Awesome!!!
The only caveat is that you must import the file with markers before you do any editing to the project in FCP.

My camera beeped when beginning another audio take, so I knew I had lost TC while recording.... but I thought I could capture NOW without TC. Thanks

If you do a 'Capture Now' and you know you have Timecode breaks, set device control in FCP to "Non-Controllable Device."
Alternatively you could dub the tape to a fresh tape (FW to FW) with new timecode, then capture from the new tape.

Working while Capturing

Is there a way to work on anything else in FCP while capturing miniDV?
I know on my old G4 there's no way, but I just bought a quad w/ 4gb RAM & 2 500gb Hd's. Can I multitask now?

I DID start using FCP because a lot of clients were asking for it. Apple has some darn good advertising so people think it's the only app that does video. I work at an advertising agency and freelance so owning FCP/Mac pays for itself for me. If seeing a Mac in my studio will bring in more clients... so be it.
It doesn't matter to me what people use. If I ask someone to clean my driveway... I don't care if they use a Broom, Brush, or WaterHose. As long as it's clean... I don't care. Same goes with NLE's.
As far as NLE's... I use Vegas, FCP, Media100, & Avid. (this is also the order of my preference)
I feel VEGAS isn't stealing the market because it's a low cost product which doesn't make Sony's Big Money. I think XPRI is Sony's Big Dog/money maker. (including the Oprah Winfrey show) If Sony would port some of XPRI's gear over to VEGAS... it would definitely take off and be seen more often. It's definitely a silent competitor. Most of its buzz comes from its users instead of Sony. Many people that check it out tend to continue using it. Naturally it's a hard sell for Mac people. This isn't because it's VEGAS but because it's PC only.
Sony purchased VEGAS from Sonic Foundry I believe to compete and get there name in the DV/independent world. Not to mention ACID & SoundForge which are also Big money makers.
VEGAS started out as 2 seperate apps. VEGAS Video(NLE) & VEGAS Audio(DAW). With VEGAS you have both a fully functional NLE & DAW with unlimited tracks. I now also use VEGAS instead of ProTools. It's that powerful.
Tools like Automatic Duck make it a little easier on us to use what works for us then port our projects for onlining. They are currently working on a VEGAS port so that's kind of an acceptance step in the right direction.
As you can tell, I'm NOT the guy to ask what does VEGAS do wrong... because it works for me. You would have to check with others that have tried it and ran into snags with it. You'll also notice that most people that get in my @$$ about mentioning VEGAS are people that have NEVER TRIED IT... therefore their opinions are mere Speculation, Talk, and purely Argumentative.
If you have a PC... download the Fully Functional 30day trial of VEGAS. Do a project on it/run it through its paces then report back. I'm always anxious to hear people's opinions. Let us know how it compares to FCP.
People diss me for mentioning VEGAS and asking people to try it out for FREE, but they forget I spent nearly $5,000 to try out FCP.
As far as why you're not seeing more of it... I'm not really sure. I do what I do with the tools I use. I try not to get involved in the politics 'cause they bring the ugly out in people. But as you can tell... I sometimes have my weak moments and cave into the name calling. My apologies.

Win XP BSOD while capture video on MSI GF FX 5900XT-VTD128

I have such a problem. While capture video (overlay mode, 720x576) very
often (but not always) Windows XP crashes on BSOD with the following error:

What anyone will advise me?

61.21 driver is a beta driver. its not 100%. wait until they release a full working driver. it will be released on http://www.nvidia.com.

Default vendor is coming in J1IG transaction while capturing excise invoice

Hi,
While capturing excise invoice at depot by using J1IG transaction, i am getting default custom vendor automatically.
This is for STO transfer i am capturing excise.
I have maintained some other custom vendor in the p.o.
Pls. let me know from where it is picking the default vendor?

I ma facing a problem Whil capturing excise at depot. error message appearing as Excise invocie no matching lines.
This problem occurs even after entering appropriate internal number in J1IG.
And this problem is occuring randomly .
This occurs for STOCK TRANSFERS FROM DEPOT TO DEPOT.
CAN ANYONE COME OUT WITH SUGGESTION

Refer to SNote Note 1382678 - Pop-up to select Excise Invoice in J1IH/J1IIN cancellation.
Symptom
While cancelling outbound Excise Invoice through the transaction J1IH or J1IIN, system always picks up the first excise invoice even when multiple excise invoices are present with same excise number and year.

Does anyone know how to monitor audio while capturing?

You might try posting in the FCE forum, very few Express users here in the Final Cut Pro forum.
In FCP, the function—and limitations—is clearly explained in the manual. I hope Apple's FCE manual and online help system are as thorough.

SETTING to hear AUDIO while CAPTURING?

(another) silly settings question.
How can I hear audio while capturing from my HDV deck?
When capturing from a DV device (a camera), the 'preview' box enabled me to monitor the audio from the tape while either screening it or when capturing it.
I don't see that 'preview' box as an option in the HDV log and caputure window.
Although I'm capturing audio from the HDV source, I can't hear it while it's loading. It's a little annoying as I'd like to be able to hear the tape as a way to decide if it's even worth capturing.
Any ideas?

We're here all week, try the liver.
I've always been a believer in monitoring in the signal chain. Granted I don't work much with HDV-- but monitoring what is going into and out of the computer, rather than relying on the computer's built in audio seems to be the way to go. Then you know what's coming off the tape, and what's going back down to the tape.

Not able to get ECS & S&H value while capture J1IEX.

I was trying to capture excise through tax code - Eg:- 1A(BED- 10%, ECS-2%, & S&H-1% & VAT-4%). All the value flow in PO but not while capturing it in J1IEX only BED flow, ECS & S&H is not flowing. For the same Tax Code in other Plant & material its capturing all the duty (Depot plant & non-cenvatable). I have checked all the entries in J1ID but not able to fine the Problem for (Manf. Plant - Raw Material).

What should be considered for excise flow for manufacturing?
In Manf. Plant - BED - OK, ECS - Not flowing, & S&H - Not flowing.
