No timeline or canvas

Trying to open the timeline and canvas on an exsisting project. I double clicked the sequence icon but to no avail and the "revert to saved": button is not high lighted

Where is the "auto save vault"
Final Cut Express>System Settings>Scratch Discs tab.
You will see an Autosave Vault: button with Set on it. The Drive and file path top your ASV files are there. This is if you changed it from the default location.
Default: is your Documents folder in your Home directory.
Documents>Final cut Express Documents>Autosave Vault>Name of Project>time saved ASVs.

Final cut pro x is open, but cannot see browser, timeline or canvas?

Basically, when I open final cut it acts as if it is opening and then nothing happens. However it is definately open as I can click on the toolbar to do stuff like 'new project' under file etc but when I do, nothing happens again. It's almost like it's working, but everything is invisible. I've seen stuff that only talk about the timeline or canvas being closed, however the solution to these is fixed through going to the browser, which in my case is also missing. I do not have it under another desktop and I've tried deleteing the system preferences etc. I feel like it's something really stupid that I'm not picking up on. Can someone please help?

Im having the same problem and this is what it looks like. I can see the tool bar at top but thats about it.

Where'd my timeline and canvas go?

I just tried to open up a project in progress by going to File-->Open recent. When the project opens up there is no timeline or canvas. I tried going to window-->arrange-->standard, but they still don't appear. If I just look in window, timeline and canvas are grey, not black.
I'm sure (I hope) the solution is quite simple, but at the moment I'm stuck and can't work on the (nearly completed) project.

Trying double-clicking a sequence in the Browser.
Selecting a sequence and hitting Return works nicely, too.

Disappearing timeline and canvas??

I have a project that each time I open it only the browser and viewer show. The timeline and canvas are greyed out in the Window drop down menu and when I try "arrange standard", they still don't show up. If I open a brand new project all four screens are where they are supposed to be?

Double click on a sequence in your Browser and the Canvas and Timeline should appear. Those windows display the current sequence; if no sequence is open, there's nothing for them to display.

Can't open timeline or canvas in FCE HD

I was halfway through my video, which is made up of 2 projects, but then I switched between them, and the timeline and canvas had disappeared and it wont let me open either of them for that project, any help?

Missing timeline and canvas!

While I was switching around to different window arrangements I also opened up another project because I was trying to figure out how to view the RGB controls for a video that I still haven't found. I closed the second project I opened and that took away my timeline and canvas! I still have my original project open and under the Window menu the Canvas, Tool Bench, and Timeline are grayed out! I've closed my project and reopened it yet they still don't come back. They do however appear in my other test project when I open that but as soon as I close it then they are gone!
How do I get back all my stuff?

Double click on the Sequence in the Browser window.

Disapperaring Timeline and Canvas

I just got done editing a video for 6-8 hours and I have been saving and all that. Then all the sudden my Timeline and Canvas disappeared. Then I went up to that window bar to click them so they show up again...and what do you know, I'm not able to click them (it's the light grey text instead of the dark, bold text). I can't export the movie or anything...is there anyway in **** I can get these bars back on this project or do I have to completely re-edit??
P.S.
I tried loading my last saved work and even restarting the computer.

Look in the Browser for any Sequence icon and double-click it.

Lost Sequence, Timeline and Canvas!?

I am pulling my hair out today, because after spending hours editing a wedding video, final cut quit unexpectedly. Fortunately i was able to restore my work and made sure i saved it. Then, i accidentally pressed the x button in the corner and got rid of the canvas and timeline. After reading forums, it seems to bring them back i need to click on the sequence button in the browser, however, there was no sequence button in the browser. If i create a new sequence and click on that it brings back the timeline and canvas, but its empty and contains none of my work. If i then try restoring my project to a previous saved version, the timeline and canvas just disappear again.

Lost my timeline and canvas

Working on my first project with FCE, I had a file in the Bin called "Sequence 1" that showed a duration of 00 and zeros across the board, so I figured that I had hit a wrong key combination and created a spurious file. I cleared it
Immediately, my Canvas and Timeline disappeared, and they are greyed out in the Windows menu.
How do I get them back? Restore to before the last 4 hours of capture? <sigh>

The basic principle is you have to have at least one sequence open for the timeline and canvas to display - otherwise, there is no reason for them to hang around and they wander off for a well deserved break.
If you close a project's only open sequence, the icon for it will still be in the Browser. Double clic on it and all should return. the only time you loose edits is when you close FCP and do not save changes. As long as FCP remains open, you should be good to go.
Also, this is a good opportunity to check your AUTO SAVE settings. Set them to what you are willing to lose should the system crash. 15 min works for me.

Just started using FCE4. My timeline and canvas windows disappeared and are grayed out in the Windows>arrange section. How do I get them back?

Had same problem a month ago. Fixed by this instruction
"Close FCE and go to Home > Library > Preferences. Trash any file (not folder) that has a name including FinalCutExpress or FinalCutPro. Now find the folder Final Cut Express/Pro User Data in the Prefs folder and open it. Trash Prefs, Prof Cache, Obj Cache (sometimes called MOA and POA Cache). Then, of course, repair permissions".

Does anyone know why i don`t se the timeline or canvas in FCE 4 when i open old projects? I just bought the new Macbook Pro (model 8,2) and got this problem. The projects i try to open was made on a old macbook. is there a setting or something on the new Macbook Pro? I only see the viewer and brownser.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
You don't have a Sequence open, so there's nothing for a Canvas or Timeline to display. Doubleclick on a Sequence in your Browser and those windows should reappear.

Dragging video to the Timeline or Canvas from the Viewer

After placing In and Out points in the Viewer, I'm just curious if there is any real benefit to dragging the resulting video to either the Canvas or the Timeline? Is it just a matter of preference? Is one way a better way than the other to get into the habit of doing?

You have control over the track your putting it on if you drag to the timeline. You can also drag it to anyplace in the timeline where if you drag it to the canvas without any in or out point marked in the timeline, it will edit at the playhead. There are probably other differences, but that's what I can think of at the moment.

Cannot drag text from viewer to timeline (or canvas)

I literally cannot drag a text clip from the viewer to the timeline, or the canvas. At first I thought it was an aspect ration issue, but I've started new projects and cannot drag basic text to the timeline.
I recently migrated from my old system (10.6 Mac Pro), using Migration Assistant, and did not deinstall/reinstall FCS. The sequence I'm trying to add titles for is pretty complex -- but for some unknown reason, I cannot get around this.
Any help or advice you rock stars can provide would be appreciated.

Showing/Hiding TIMELINE and CANVAS

I cannot make my canvas and timeline appear. I know the keyboards commands of apple command + 2 and of 3. It's not working. Any tips for a FCP newbie?

Just open a sequence. If there is no sequence open, there is no reason for the canvas or timeline to be open.
