No timeline or navigator in iMovie 10.0?

Please tell me how I can see what time I'm up to (timeline) in iMovie 10.0? It only shows the time at the start and end of a clip!! I am used to editing my movies to a certain length or coming in to edit at a certain moment on an audio clip.
The previous version showed you minutes and seconds as you skipped through your content. I've looked through the iMovie help after it finally loaded, but couldn't find anything.
(If you also know why it's generally crap and slow and bugs everywhere, please enlighten me.)
I'm running the latest OS on a 15" MBP, 2.7GHz i7, with 16GB.
Thanks!

"I am baffled why I cannot cross-dissolve audio clips but I can do so with picture"
Well it's done automatically in the case of two video clips with attached audio that have a Cross Dissolve transition between them.
When you have detached or independent audio clips just overlap them and use the fade handles to fade one out and the next in.   See  below:

  • Where is timeline viewer mode in iMovie 11 like iMovie HD?

I only have clip viewer mode? Where is timeline viewer mode in iMovie 11' like iMovie HD? for audio and video timing  I would just click on the clock symbol. HELP?

    Hi
Bad news - There are non (Exactly as in iMovie 1 to HD6 or FinalCut)
Good news - There are sort of - at least project is presented in ONE row.
    • Click on a specific iMovie PROJECT
    • In this window - top right hand there are two small symbols - one blue three squares and one with two brown red symbols. Click on the three blue squares one.
    • to get the Audio - under this there is a small wave like symbol - Click on this.
But still this view has so many quirks that a person familiar with iMovie 1 to HD6, FinalCut, Adobe Premiere and Avid can feel a bit of serious frustration. (at least I do)

  • Can I apply a timeline to Events in iMovie 11?

Hello! I wonder if someone could help me?
I've been given a long video (60 mins) to edit down. I want to take select certain preset minutes (e.g. 3.56-8.44, 15.50-18.56, 17.02-23.14) and drag them into the Projects box. I thought this would be really simple, but I can't see that Events has a timeline which would make this easy.
The only way I can think around this is dragging the whole thing into Projects (where there is a timeline), highlighting the appropriate minutes then deleting accordingly. I'm hoping because I'm a numpty I've missed something that would make me life easier.
    Many thanks for any suggestions!

    Hi
No this is part of the total frustration beginning with iMovie'08 to 11 and now FinalCut Pro-X.
Find an older version of FinalCut and here You can import from Camera dedicated time sequenses. But KEEP Your Mac OS X.6.8 as I'm not sure what versions of previous FinalCut's that might work under Mac OS X.7
    Else
    Adobe Premiere - Sorry

  • Timeline movement as in iMovie 11

    I am a convertee from iMovie 11.
I am use to having the timeline movie along with the playback in the editing function. Is there a way to have the playback move instead of the line always moving to the right off the screen?
    Thanks,

One can hope. It's the #1 requested feature on some web sites that compile such things.

  • Imovie 11 Timeline problem

I hidden my timeline in the new imovie, and I do not know how to activate it again. Someone can help me?

I solved the problem simply by re-adding the clips back into the project. The audio now appears correctly for all the clips. Why it was missing in the first place is still a mystery.

  • How do you get timeline view on imovie 08  and speed up a clip on imovie 08

how do you get timeline view on imovie 08  and speed up a clip on imovie 08

    Hi
You can not - Nobody else (if not a very selected few at Apple dev.group)
TimeLine was lost in iMovie'08 and 09 and a very simple one re-introduced in iMovie'11
Speed Change - Was omitted in iMovie'08 - and returned in iMovie'09 - BUT has to be used in a certain way - the glider/slide if used - will destroy the audio (a Known BUG - in both iM'09 and iM'11) but use of pre-set fixed no. 25% 50% 100% 200% etc. will work.

  • Imovie launches project, but timeline is missing

    Hello there,
i have a strange problem: I was working on an imovie project (about 20 min), everything was working fine, until i tried to relaunch it the other day. iMovie opens the project, but there is no timeline - nothing. Before this occurred, i saved it, i exported it to iDVD, and maybe - i deleted the trash within iMovie. Can anyone help me? The project container has still about 300 MB.
    Best regards

Hi Apfeltalk - welcome to the Discussion!
When you say there is no Timeline, do you mean that the Timeline is empty, or that the Timeline part of the imovie window is missing?
Assuming the former - ..The project container has still about 300 MB...
If the 'container' (meaning the package?) is only 300 mb, then your clips have mysteriously disappeared. A 20 minute iMovie should be over 4 GB.
To check, Control-Click the package icon, then click Show Package Contents. Look inside the Media folder. What is there?
Try opening any of the iMovie project files or the file in the iDVD folder. Any luck?

  • Cannot open imovie projects

    Hello,
I've spent the afternoon looking for answers and I've tried everything but still no luck.
I've been working at a project for the past week. This afternoon, imovie crashed when i was editing my project. When I opened imovie, the project was gone from the "project library." I navigated to the imovie project folder, and sure enough, the file was there. Problem is, imovie can't open it. I've clicked, dragged but nothing works.
I've even deleted the "com.apple.imovie8.plist" file but it doesn't help. Finally, i checked the console message and here's what i got:
6/19/10 6:42:20 6/19/10 iMovie[246] Skipping loading of project "South America" due to error: Unable to load project
    6/19/10 6:42:20 6/19/10 iMovie[246] CoreText: Bad Glyph Found In 'kern' Subtable Of CTFont <name: Futura-Medium, size: 19.330000, matrix: 0x0>

Any ideas on how to fix this?
    Thanks!!!!

This means that your original media files were not in your events folder but only links to them, with the originals stored somewhere else.  If you look in the events folders inside your iMovie Events folder  you will probably see aliases to the clips rather than the clips themselves.  If you get info on the alieases they may identify where the original was stored (or they may say the original can't be found).
You must have moved your events folder at some point which broke the links so iMovie now doesn't know where to find them.  You can still see the thumbnails in the timeline because these are small low resolution files which are in your project file.  Unless you can move your folders back to exactly how they were when you created the project (and on the same computer) you will have to re-import the originals and re-insert them into the timeline.
You could as an alternative try putting one of the clips manually into your events folder in place of the broken alias to it and see if it appears in the timeline when you relaunch iMovie.  If this works (I'm not sure if it will) you can do it with the rest and not have to touch the project timeline.

  • Poor Image quality/Slideshow/iMovie to iDVD

I placed about 150 jpegs as clips in iMovie HD (v.5.0.2). I made them all 3.25 seconds long and gave them all a short overlap transition. I set them to music and exported to iDVD (v.5.0.1). Once the DVD was burned, I viewed it with disappointment. Briefly, during the transitions the images are of great quality. But the actual image clips are very poor quality. I'm new to this and I find all the many options for making quicktime movies a little overwhelming. But, exporting to iDVD doesn't have any options. I thought it was supposed to maintain the quality.
What did I do wrong or what can I do right?

    Karl Peterson said,
"If there are unrendered clips in the Timeline when we tell iMovie to Share (Export) a project to iDVD, iMovie will ask permission to render those clips. (Rendering converts the clips to video clips.)
These may include still photos, photos imported with the Ken Burns checkbox turned OFF. Photos imported with the Ken Burns checkbox ON are rendered by Ken Burns; iMovie won't ask to render them again.
If we grant permission to render clips, iMovie will render them with very poor quality, adding lots of "jaggies" to the photos. It's a bug.
To avoid the bug, do NOT grant permission to render when iMovie asks. Then iDVD will render them for us, which it does with good quality.
So, to avoid the bug do any ONE of these:
    1. Import all photos with the Ken Burns checkbox ON.
    2. If iMovie asks permission to render when exporting the project, do NOT grant permission.
    3. Instead of sharing from iMovie to iDVD, drop the iMovie project into the iDVD project window.

  • Project erred. Is in folders, cannot open in iMovie

I was almost finished with a project when it erred.  I was instructed to make a forced close.  Then rebooted.  My project is not in iMove, however I see it in the folders under finder.  It will not let me copy and paste, or drag.  It will not let me "open in iMove".  Any ideas?

iMovie doesn't support importing one iMovie project to another. When we try, we get exactly the error you quoted.
You can, however, import all the Timeline video and audio as a single clip to a new project. Or you can drag files from the Media folder of the project to the Timeline of a NEW project.
In the Finder, Control-click on the project icon and choose Show Package Contents from the popUp menu. You'll see the movie "Timeline Movie.mov" in the window that opens. You want to import that movie to a new project, or import selected files in the Media folder.
To import, drag the file to the Timeline of a NEW iMovie project. If importing the Timeline Movie, everything on the Timeline of the original project will arrive as a single clip in the new project.
If the project failed on the external drive, it may be because the disk does not use the disk format required by iMovie. Use Disk Utility to check the disk format, which must be "Mac OS Extended". If it's not that format, use Disk Utility to reformat the drive. (Which will erase all the files on the drive, so make backups.)

  • Simple Navigation in Flash

Im trying to make a simple navigation system with buttons in
    flash.
I've made a blank layer called actions and ive named the
keyframes after the 'pages' in the site (home, about, etc)
I've also used keyframes to change the text and title on each
page, and just before the next page i've put stop(); in the
    action-script.
My final layer has the buttons I'm using. How do I make these
buttons link to the different 'pages' (frame names in the 'actions'
layer). I think this is done in action-script so can someone tell
me the code to input. Am I going about this in the correct way?
    Thanks

with timeline label navigation you use: gotoAndPlay([frame
label]); from your buttons onPress handlers. there is a basic
    timeline nav example

  • Exporting a large number of iMovie clips. Automator?

    Hello,
I have 116 DV clips in iMovie HD from 29 large source DV files. Each of the clips is about 5 minutes long. Editing them has been a joy so far, but I've hit a snag exporting them.
The goal is to export them individually as MP4 files keeping the clip name as the new filename. I don't want one large file like what iMovie assumes you want to "share".
I have been fruitlessly scouring the web for a way to automate this process. Any way to do it? Or am I stuck babysitting it every 10 minutes for the next few days? Thanks.
    PowerMac G5 Dual 2.0 Mac OS X (10.4.9)
    PowerMac G5 Dual 2.0 Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Your goal is to export each of the 116 clips in the iMovie project, not their source files, right? (A source file may include two or more clips, and include material not included in the Timeline.)
There is no easy way to export a series of clips. iMovie is not AppleScriptable, so there's no good way to automate it using AppleScript/Automator. You can't tell iMovie to select clip 3, for example, and export it to a new movie.
The best you can do is create a script for QuickTime Player that exports a portion of the movie "Timeline Movie.mov" — which iMovie stores in the Cache folder of the iMovie project — to a new movie the format you want. QuickTime Player is entirely AppleScriptable, so it can do that.
Theoretically, most of what you want to do is possible, for there's is a subtle but reliable connection between the iMovie project and the Timeline Movie.mov. When the Timeline Movie.mov is opened in QuickTime Player, the movie selects the contents of the clip selected in iMovie when the project was last Saved. Each time we save the iMovie project, iMovie sets the selected frames of the Timeline Movie.mov to match the clip selected in iMovie. So if we select Clip 3 of the iMovie project, Save, and open the Timeline Movie.mov in QuickTime Player, the frames for Clip 3 are pre-selected in the movie.
So theoretically an AppleScript could open the Timeline Movie.mov, Copy the current selection to a new movie and export it to a movie with the format you want.
Here's the problem: There's no way to tell iMovie to select a particular clip in the Timeline and Save the project, the two steps required for the Timeline Movie.mov to select the proper frames. These steps must be done manually. You have to manually select the clip in iMovie, Save, then run a script that opens the Timeline Movie.mov in QuickTime Player, exports the selection, then closes the movie so the next time iMovie Saves it can properly update the Timeline movie.
There's also no way to apply the name of the selected clip to the exported movie without AppleScript sniffing around in the iMovie project file, which it doesn't know how to do.
So some of what you want can be done, sort of, but not the way you want. What is needed is a utility that understands how to read the iMovie project file, figures out where the clips are, and exports each clip.

  • Cannot open an iMovie project file

I can no longer open an iMovie project file from my external hard drive. Other iMovie projects on the hard drive can be opened, but not my main project. I've transfered it back to my MacBook Pro and then tried importing it into a new project, but I get an error -43 message about Quicktime not able to 'parse' the file. I have also tried Lennart Thelander's "File Fixer" but this still does not open the file. File icon and file size (39.02GB) seem to be the same as when the file could be opened. Is there a way to recover this file?

  • Cannot open old iMovie project

I have an old iMovie project from 2008 that I cannot open.
If I double-click it, terminal opens.
Recommended applications are Textwrangler, Terminal.... not really the right thing to watch a movie.
Final Cut Pro X cannot read the file, because it's in the "bundle" format. Quicktime is also grayed out.
Is this some weird format that is no longer readable by anything? Or can I turn it into an .mp4 file?
    Thanks.
