No tone for new SMS

I can't get my iPhone to 'ring' when I receive a new text message (SMS).
The settings are correct in 'Options/Sounds' and I have tried different ringtones with no improvement.
I have the original iPhone with version 3 software loaded.
Any ideas?

Is there any programs or settings one can change to add some notification for new SMS? Most other phones have a blinking LED or a message floating on the screen saver for new SMS and emails, but the Treo Pro has nothing.
I often have my phone setting aside and when in sleep mode, I am unaware of new messages or emails until I turn the phone off sleep mode.

How can I create a new ring tone for my iPhone 4? I followed the Garage Band process and ended up with the ring tone I want as a AAC audio file. It got stored in my iTunes a a song rather than a ring tone. How do I make it a ring tone vs. a song? I tried dragging it t the Ring Tone category at the bottom of the ITunes list, but it won't alloow me to move it?

There's also an easy to use Applescript over at Doug's Applescripts for iTunes. It automates the whole thing. All you do is set the start and stop time on a file in iTuens and run the script. It will do everything else.

I have downloaded every update and my battery life is better than any previous iPhone I have ever owned. I see posts from hundreds of people every day, and this is not a commonly reported problem. my son had this problem. I went to the apple store and they wiped out and restored the phone.. They said that was all they could do but that I should call our phone carrier and ask them. I did. They asked if in the top left side, next to battery power there was a icon of a half moon. There was. They said to go in to settings and go to "Do not Disturb" and turn it off. I did.....problem solved!!! Somehow "do not disturb" was turned on and that is what happens if it is!!

why is there large selection of tones for alarm clock oh yes and you can use own own custom added one but only 6 rubbish one which dont even work half the time for sms

No one here knows if Apple will ever fix this, but it the 6 rubbish sounds available for SMS don't work half the time, having a larger selection of available sounds for SMS now wouldn't be working half the time for some.

My iPhone quit working and I couldn’t get it fixed as quickly as I needed to. I bought a used iPhone and started using it normally and downloaded the backup from itunes/icloud. There was a large gap in data where the first iPhone didn’t backup when I thought it had. I have SMS data on both phonesnow and I need them for a court hearing. I have since had the other iPhone repaired and working perfectly. Will downloading a backup wipe out the newer SMS data? I am nervous because I can’t lose the information or my case mey be compromised. Any “Real Help” including programs that work to accomplish this would be very helpful. Thank You in advance…

No, direct access to manipulating the phone's filesystem is not permitted for 3rd party apps in the iOS. It can't be done without hacking the phone, which you certainly don't want to do. The messages can be combined and viewed on your computer, but not on a single phone.

What makes you believe that you can't? To set a custom ringtone (or SMS tone) for a contact, go to that contact entry, tap the Edit button in the upper right. You can then edit both ringtones and SMS tones for that contact.

Hey Nokia, why is your lumia phones can't put mp3 songs as alert tones for text messages? This is a big problem on your lumia phones because we missed a lot of text messages because your built in alert tones is not enough to catch our attention when we have a incoming text messages especially in a noisy environment. All the other brands of smartphones including the dumbphones are capable of having mp3 songs as alert tones for text messeges. Please do something about this.

Thanks On my phone, these are the options under Menu>Settings & Tools>Sound Settings>Alert Sounds: 1. TXT Message 2. Multimedia Message 3. Voicemail 4. Emergency Tone 5. Missed Call . And under Service Alerts: 1. ERI 2. Minute Beep 3. Call Connect 4. Charge Complete 5. Software Update. So nothing there for the calendar. And options from the calendar that I can see are Add (here you can change the tone for one event or recurring event, but not set a default tone for the event alarm), View (gives you the options of viewing an existing event in more detail, adding a new one, and the same choices from the Options list on the first screen where you are viewing the entire month), and Options (1. lets you view weekly/monthly, 2. Go To Today 3. Go To Date 4. Search 5. Erase All 6. Erase All Old 7. Send. So as far as I can see, there's no way to do it. I have been through all the Settings and Tools menus... and the Events menu. But...I have just discovered that if I delete ALL my alarms and change the Ringtone for the first alarm I set, that ringtone becomes the default ringtone. I will try deleting ALL my events and starting fresh with a new tone and see if that works!

Previous text always appears when starting new SMS

My wife has a problem with her iPhone 4s running iOS6.
When composing a new SMS, the text from a previous message appears in the window pane. We do restart, we turned it off/on but it is still there. When you reply to a text message, it will appear again from the window pane.
Any idea why is this happening?

One conversation with each person - at the present time anyway.
If an existing conversation has been started with a particular person, you can't create a new conversation for that person without deleting the existing conversation.
