No tools in CS4 Mac Indesign

just installed CS4 on new MacBook Pro. Unable to locate tools in InDesign. Searched previous threads to no avail. Anyone help?

InDesign CS4 Mac starts but then freezes

Indesign CS4 Mac starts up but freezes from there. Trying to open files or create new ones results in the filename appearing at the bottom of the Window drop-down menu, but the file doesnt appear on-screen.
The same result occurs when opening files using "Open Recent File" as well as double-clicking the file in Finder or using "Open With" in FInder.
It couldnt have picked a worse time to crap out - right in the middle of an urgent contract!! Dang Cleetus!!
Any suggestions - apart from re-installing the program?

Tried renaming InDesign Saved data and InDesign Defaults and restarting InDesign - that didnt seem to fix the problem - after re-starting InDesign it seemed the program didnt write new versions of the files on re-start.
Will head back to the office & connect to my 23" display & see if ID works OK with that - that would confirm that it's a screen pointing issue?
Would re-installing ID help?

InCopy CS4 (PC) / InDesign CS4 (mac) not working

My client and I are trying to establish an InCopy CS4 (PC) / InDesign CS4 (Mac) workflow. Neither of us has ever used InCopy and we are all getting frustrated now that our first production cycle has come and gone and the client is not recouping the money they invested on this software. Our trial system was successful for awhile and then it just stopped. The client says she can't open the icma/icml files and they need the indd file. So I send a new batch of files with the indd included and still no luck.
I'm saving the assigments like I've been saving in our initial trial run. In ID I go to Incopy > Export > Add all Stories to Assignment. That creates the content folder and the .icma files. I zip everything and send it off via email attachment.
Is there something I am doing wrong? Something my client needs to do? I prefer not to have to send the indd file. Should I have to do that for them to edit in Incopy? I appreciate any advice. Thank you. Lynn

Don't zip the files, that won't work.ID/IC is meant to work on a local server w/local staff. For a remote workflow you have to use a special technique.
After you create the assignment, use the Package for InCopy command in the Assignments panel.That creates an ICAP file that you send to the client.
When the double-click the ICAP file, it unpacks (it's like a zip file) on their computer and the assignment opens in InCopy. They work on the stories, and when they're done, they use the Return for InDesign command in *their* Assignments panel menu. That creates an IDAP file that they send to you.
When you open the IDAP file, it unpacks, looks for the INDD file (be sure not to rename or move it in the meantime), and updates the stories w/the editors changes.
Those are the broad strokes. It's covered more thoroughly in the online help file of both ID and IC ... you *and* your client should read up on it. And I cover it very thoroughly (4 videos ... Chapter 15) in my online Lynda.com tutorial on the CS4 workflow:

Thank you. I am a little bit busy at work, sorry for the delayed reply. I tried to solve the problem, but it still exists. The 3rd of the Adobe disk is damaged someway. I tried to run on my mac at home and it has a failure. So I think we have no other choice that to download the full pack of master collection. I had a discussion with the IT expert and he figured out that company does not exist any more from where they purchased the Adobe Master Collection for Mac and PC. So If you would be kind to help me, what kind of information ID or any kind of document would be needed to identify the purchaser institute (us). I don't think any of us has an account at the Adobe. I will try to figur out. I desperately need to replace Photoshop and InDesign as without them it's really harsh to teach the kids fot the graphic design.

InDesign CS4 Mac upgrade (CS5 won't work)

Does anyone know how or where I can get an upgrade license for Mac InDesign CS4 (from CS3)?
I have the CS4 trial version installed, but when I click to purchase a license, it goes to CS5 page. I have a Macintosh G5 which is not supported by CS5.
I contacted Adobe Customer Service via live chat and they were unable to help. He kept saying to go to a reseller. But everywhere I search, CS4 is out of stock (except for illegitimate crack software).
CS5 can't save CS3 files, so I am having problems with people sending me files, and one client wants to use CS4-compatible InCopy.
I would love to get CS5, but I really can't afford a new computer right now. But I could afford a CS4 upgrade. I can't believe there isn't someone at Adobe who could generate a legitimate Macintosh InDesign CS4 upgrade serial number and sell it to me.

Good point on upgrading. Although, it really isn't what I wanted to hear.
I use InDesign at home for some freelance work, but it isn't my primary job. Uprading all my software every version would be a pretty big chunk of what I actually make on my freelance work, especially last year when the economy was in the tank.

Mac Indesign tables don't seem to be recognised by Acrobat 9 Windows

Maybe someone else can try this to confirm?
Acrobat 9 (Mac and Windows) has a command where you can select the contents of a table (using the select tool), then right click "copy as table". The theory is that you can then go to a spreadsheet like Excel or Numbers and paste as a table with values into defined cells.
I've been looking at this to convert some existing pdfs with lots of tables into corresponding Excel documents. What appears to be the case is that when using Acrobat 9 Extended on Windows, the command doesn't seem to recognise Indesign CS4 tables from pdfs generated on Indesign CS4 Mac- nothing happens.
It seems to work fine when copying tables in Acrobat 9 Mac.
The odd thing though is that the Windows version seems to have no problems copying tables from Quark files generated on the Mac. Maybe this is peculiar to my set up but if anyone else has a mixed network give it a try.

Thumbnail Previews in Mac InDesign CS5

In Mac InDesign CS5, the thumbnail previews are no longer saved as a PICT resource. The previews seem to be embedded within the InDesign document.
I have an XCode Cocoa application that can preview CS2 - CS4 documents by importing the PICT resource as an NSPICTImageRep. Is there any way to extract the preview from a CS5 document programatically?

Were they ever? InDesign documents are platform-independent, and Windows wouldn't want to use PICT resources. I don't think ID documents have ever had native thumbnails -- perhaps you had a Finder utility that did it for you.
In any case: in CS5, and, to a lesser extent, also in previous versions, JPEG previews are saved at the end of each document in an XML format. If you search the Scripting forum for "XML preview" (or something similar), you might find scripts that can extract them for you.

Tool Panel in Adobe Indesign CC vanish and I can't find it

Folks, I am trying to find Tool Panel in Adobe Indesign CC but I can't find it. This never happened to me before. I don;t remember closing it, but I tried looking inside 'Window > Tools' but no luck. There is no such option. I am on Macbook. Please help.
I have already reinstalled InDesign once, but again no luck. I searched the whole web for help, but seems like no one encountered this before.

OK. The folders you need to work with are hidden since Mountain Lion, so if you don't know how to access hidden user library files, see Access hidden user library files | Mac OS 10.7 and later

Mac InDesign CS5.5: can someone please check if variables do not cause crash when copied

There is a bug in Mac InDesign CS4 and CS5 which causes InDesign to crash if text containing a variable is copied. I am hoping this bug is fixed in CS5.5.
So can someone with Mac CS5.5 try this for me and report back:
1. create a variable, or use one already created by Adobe
2. insert it into some text
3. copy the text
4a. try pasting it into another part of the same document
4b. try pasting it into an external document, for example an Excel file.
Hopefully it won't crash and you will be able to tell me whether it is fixed or not! If variables do not cause InDesign to crash when copied then it might be worthwhile for me to upgrade to CS5.5.

These problems are rarely easy to debug.
It appears from your crash report:

That the problem is in the Adobe PDF Library (not surprising, this is what reads PDF files) when getting "merged XAP keywords," whatever those are.
I believe the XAP: metadata has been superceded by XMP metadata, so this suggests your PDF files have corrupt XMP metadata, or XMP metadata that InDesign cannot deal with.
You might try running some of the preflights and fixups in Acrobat that relate to analysis of XMP metadata,
or simply removing XMP Metadata from the PDF entirely, again in Acrobat.
It sounds like this is a genuine InDesign bug (even if your PDF file was damaged, it should not crash ID!), so you should open a case with Adobe Support and get them to file a bug (http://adobe.com/go/supportportal). Optimistically, such a bug is unlikely to be fixed in time for CS6, so don't expect miracles. Think of it as making sure your bug doesn't hurt other people two years from now.

Pen Tool - PS CS4

I don't know if I found a bug, or if it's just something I need to do differently, but the pen tool is not creating a new layer.
It just seems to be there. I can modify the shape with the direct selection tool. But I can't apply a layer style or do any other modifications. It does not have a bounding box when I select the move tool.
It's the weirdest thing... Anyone else experience this?

It has been fine but then after a few hours I have been having
a problem with the selection line (that it leaves behind) is not there?? is there something in the View / paths that I am missing?
And at the same time,my viewing line that falls behind the magnetic tool is not working!
It is driving me crazy and I know it is something so simple
that I am not doing...

Got an iMac and used migration tool (PC to Mac). When I try iTunes i get The file "iTunes Library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version.... download iTunes now? but i have it already???

Unless you've tried to install an older version of iTunes that message likely indicates a corrupt library file. See Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash...

CS4 Mac Compatibility

I'm sure I'm asking the obvious, but since I'd like to
upgrade to CS4, I want to make sure before I buy.
The system requirements for Flash CS4 (Mac) mention Mac OS X
v10.4.11–10.5.4. I have OS X 10.5.5.
Does this make any difference?

probably export from pc to something decent and import that to mac...
might be best solution
ps...just built this camera and fcp on mac does good job of using QT intermediate files etc for editing...even with prores...and so on...
theres no such thing as "pc vs mac" ...its more like "what works well "...and in the long run ( I might add ) its probably dpx stuff for final...which neither one has a handle on at this point...

Tu tienes una raíz de trabajo con archivo .ai y sus imágenes en una carpeta, lo gravas en un cd para el proveedor.
Abre el cd y el .ai no encuentra las imágenes, que siguen estando en la misma carpeta que hemos gravado. Por lo tanto tienes que tener desperdigadas
dentro de la carpeta de .ai, si no se pierde el enlace. También pierdes el enlaze se mueves la carpeta con todo el contenido. Es un error de programa los
demás programas no dan este problema. Se tiene solucionar.

developing for "the latest iOS Apps" is supported by the latest X-code tools, which does NOT run under 10.6.8.
Version 3.2.6 will run under 10.6.6 and later.
Version 5.0.1 requires 10.8.4 or later.
Version 6.1.1 (currently the latest) requires 10.9.4 or later.
