  • Is there a tool that reads the number of assigned RefNums (primarily Queues)?

    Hi-
I have been troubleshooting a memory leak caused by queues, and have found the following link helpful:
    http://forums.ni.com/ni/board/message?board.id=170&message.id=85418&requireLogin=False
My question is: Is there a tool that I can use that will show me how many refnums are opened in memory? Preferably with the references name? It would make verifying queue memory leaks and their eradication so much easier! If such a tool does not exist, could it be added to the VI profiler sometime in the future?
    Thanks!
    -Randy

BUMP. I am curious too.  But I suspect not.
    A couple of things:
Looking queues up by name creates a new reference to that queue (even if it exists).  So if you have a VI that runs for a long time repeatably looking it up by name, it will bleed the memory dry.
Setting the "force destroy" of the release queue to true will destroy all references to that queue.  Freeing up that memory.
As you are aware, I uses queues in my primary architecture.  I have run them in 30 plus day trials with no problems.  (I realize this is not helping you.) so by NI side implementation, there is no problem.
I am not sure how much of a bear it would be, but you could wrap the "create queue" and log the number of creates that you are running. You can wrap the release queue, and see which are getting released.  Keep in mind if you "create" the same queue twice you will have two references open to that queue.  Force destroy closes both, otherwise, you are left with the remaining.  It is a management nightmare.  The latest incarnation of my statecase manager implements queue tracking. The nice part of this, is that I can actually pass events to any queue running, and save myself the trouble of looking it up by name.
But you do have your work cut out for you, depending on the size of your program.
    Good luck.

  • Typewriter Tool in Reader 9 no longer allows text styling

In Acrobat 8, I use to be able to right-click with the typewriter tool and choose bold or italic in using "Type Styles." This feature is gone in Acrobat 9. Did Adobe remove it? If so why?
    Rob

    Hi Rob.
Take a look at this thread:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/415470
There are around 40 posts over a year, from others who are finding this problem very irritating.  I expect there are other threads too.
It seems that many other people have the same problem, that the problem is inconsistent (some suggested workarounds work for some people, but not for others), that it has been present in more than one version of Acrobat, and that it remains basically unresolved.
My own experience is that although Acrobat 4 worked better for me than any subsequent version I have (6 and 9), Windows 7 and Acrobat 4 or 6 seem incompatible.  I now have this same problem with Acrobat 9.
I would welcome any solution that works for all these users, over their several versions of Acrobat, if it is offered by Adobe.  If there is such a solution, and if they are monitoring this thread (let's see if this is published in its entirety), perhaps they would post it to the thread, or update the offline/online help topic at:
    Adobe/Help/en_US/Acrobat/9.0/help.html?content=WS76F8368A-2F01-421d-9437-06EEB1C68BA4.html
(This is the Help topic on using the Typewriter tool).
If Adobe cannot or will not solve problems like this, we had better vote  with our spending power.
If there is no solution from Adobe  itself, it seems that in this respect Acrobat is a faulty product.
How about it, Adobe, is this fair comment?  Can you solve this problem?

  • Form field tool tips & Read Out Loud

I know that having tool tips for form fields in a PDF is a requirement for accessibility. When I use View > Read This Page in Acrobat, the reader does not read the tool tips for the form fields, even though I've turned on Read form fields in Preferences > Reading. I have a both check boxes and text fields on the form.
What do I need to do to have the Read This Page feature read the form field tool tips?
And, if the Read This Page features does actually read the form field tool tips, wouldn't it be rather redundant that it reads the tool tip and then it also reads the text label printed on the form?
Are certain types of form fields considered 'not accessible?'
Thanks for any help you can provide.

What do I need to do to have the Read This Page feature read the form field tool tips?
Sorry, to the best of my knowledge the Acrobat Read Out Loud feature cannot be coaxed into reading form field tips. But you have other options like the PAC 1.3 preview feature and the Callas pdfGoHTML plug in - that let you see the form fields and tips in the context that an assistive technology user would hear them. Or you could use the excellent free screen reader NVDA. Or pay for JAWS.
And, if the Read This Page features does actually read the form field tool tips, wouldn't it be rather redundant that it reads the tool tip and then it also reads the text label printed on the form?
Yes, form field tips can be repetitive. Accessibility rules can be dogmatic. If a form field is labeled and tagged properly and it would be annoyingly repetitive to include a tip, and if you are not constrained by a must-pass-the-dogmatic-accessibility-checker rule, feel free to use your good judgment regarding when it makes sense to leave out the tip.
Are certain types of form fields considered 'not accessible?'
My understanding is that XFA-based PDF forms are problematic from an accessibility standpoint. Standard PDF forms should always be made accessible.
    Hope this helps.

  • Analysis Tool in Reader 9

I am unable to use te measure option in Analysis Tool of Adobe Reader 9. In View / Toolbar / More Tools there is a note saying that I have to activate the Document Rights to enable measuring tool.
It means nothing to me. Anybody can help me?

  • How to access the magnifier/marquee zoom tool in Reader XI?

The subject says it all, really.
    Richard

The keyboard shortcut is the same as in most applications (Windows):
    Ctrl + [zoom in]
    Ctrl - [zoom out]
use the + / - on the numeric keypad.
If you don't have the Zoom tool on your Toolbar, you can add it using View | Show/Hide | Toolbar Items | Select & Zoom.

Back on April 1, in post 14 in this thread, I noted that there isn't a sticky at the top of the forum sections for each system, directing users to this thread.
The problem I noted in my post was never responded to.
You have very recently moved a post from another section of these forums into this thread.
Why isn't there a sticky at the tops of all the forum sections for all systems, directing users to this thread?

  • Can we use SQL developer tool to READ/WRITE BerkeleyDB by any means

We use Berkeley Db as a persistent database, which holds data less frequently changed data. Can is it possible to use SQL Developer tool or any other front end tool that can connect and communicate to Berkeley db file for INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE records.

I assume you're referring to Berkeley DB SQL (BDB SQL API).
SQL Developer is not certified to work with BDB SQL; see the SQL Developer Certifications page.
Something similar was asked some time ago, about connecting JDeveloper to BDB SQL; see this Re: How connect Oracle JDeveloper 11g to Berkeley DB 11g. The SQL tools in JDeveloper and SQL Developer are similar and built on the same components, so my answer there can be extended to SQL Developer as well. While you can probably have SQL Developer properly connect to a BDB SQL database, I am afraid you won't be able to do more than just viewing the data; likely any attempt to generate DDL or DML statements, export data, or run DML statements against the database will fail.
If you migrated to BDB SQL from SQLite and were using a front-end tool for SQLite, it should be possible to use that with BDB SQL as well.

  • Enable Tools in Adobe Reader

    What is the difference between:
    A. Enable for commenting and analysis in Adobe Reader (or Enable typewriter tool in Reader), and
    B. Extend features in Adobe Reader
Enabling the commenting tool also enables the typewriter tool, but not vice vera. All annotations can be saved.
If the typewriter tools is enabled, it seems that the document (including forms) can save the annotations made.
What does the "Extend features to Adobe Reader" include that the commenting and typewriter tools does not? Digital signature?
    Thanks for helping.
P.S.  I know how to enable and use these tools, I just need a reason why I would want to use one over another.
    Krys

Reader is not only the name of the product but describe its operation. A file viewer or reader can not modify the file it is viewing, no notes no saving of form field data.
Enabling comments, typewriter tool, and other annotations allows a use with Reader to add any of the annotation objects.
To save a form with filled in form fields, involves additional form rights being granted to a user with Reader to save the form and entered data.

  • Need help creating PDF w/ comment tools available in Reader!!

I'm trying to create a PDF that you can use the "comment" and other proofing tools in Reader. I've tried using Acrobat Pro to adjust the settings so the "comment" and other tools are available in Reader but it isn't working.
Here's what I'm really trying to do (if anyone might have an amazing idea). My company produces a 1300 pg catalog that the entire departmentaround 20 people in totalhave to proof. In an effort to reduce how much paper we use in our proofing process I'm trying to move the department to an "electronic" proofing process as much as possible.
I know that in Acrobat Pro you can comment and mark up a PDF and that you're able to do the same in Acrobat Reader (only the artist have Pro, the rest of the department just has Reader). I just can't seem to find a way to take my InDesign document and allow the "comment" tool to be accessible in Reader.
Anyone know? I know there is a "Review" session thing you can set up, but that's turning into a huge pain since Adobe doesn't want to work with our Mac based network...blah blah, way over my head.
Thanks for the help! (Sorry to be so long winded...)

I suspect I already know the answer to this question; however I'll ask anyway in case I'm incorrect. Our Trust only supplies Acrobat 8 Standard or the standalone reader application. Is it possible to use Acrobat 8 Standard to enable a .pdf for commenting in Reader 6+?

Open the PDF in Acrobat Pro 7 or later.
    Under the
    Comments menu, select
Enable Commenting and Analysis in Adobe Reader....
    This will spawn an
Save As... dialog. Save to a new filename is recommended (such as
[filename] for review.pdf), although you can save over the existing file if you choose or to another location.
Send the resulting PDF for review.
So long as the reviewer has access to Acrobat Reader 7 or later (or whatever version your Acrobat Pro is), there should not be any issues with them adding comments.
I use this all the time, exchanging files for review between Dallas, TX (on OSX) and Birmingham, AL (on Windows).
Older versions of Acrobat Reader will not work.

  • Can the Read Out Loud tool read tooltips?

    Hello,
I have created a PDF with a text form field where the user will enter his/her name and then print a course completion certificate.  I have named the text form field and added a tooltip.
    1.  It looks fine in Form Edit mode but there is text that looks like it's behind the tool tip.  It is different words than the tooltip and larger font size.  I can't remember how I got that text there.  I just wanted to edit it a little bit but can't find where to do so.  Any suggestions?
    2.  I have made this form accessibile but is there a way to have the Read Out Loud tool actually read the tooltips?
    3.  Also, how do I add a screen shot to this discussion?
    Thanks!

    Any suggestions on this one?
    Thanks.

  • Acrobat Reader - Tools - Export PDF shows trail has ended . . .

I am paid up for a year.  But under tools, while reading in Adobe Reader (ver 10.1.1) the little blue box is still showing "Your Trail has eneded . . . Subscribe now"  But when I log in I can use the Export feature.  But this blue box still does not update for easier use to Export.  Is there a way to fix this Blue Box?

    Good day,
Try opening Reader and choosing Edit > Preferences (Windows) or Adobe Reader > Preferences (Mac).  Click on 'Online Services' on the left side of the Preferences pane.  Make sure your Adobe ID is entered in the Account Information section.  Reader should then auto-authenticate your account.  You'll still have to log in when you try to convert a PDF to Word (this is something we're working on!), but it should stop the blue box from appearing.
If this doesn't stop the issue, could you please send a screenshot of what you're seeing here.
    Kind regards,

  • Reader XI: Removing Tools|Sign|Comment from Menu and Toolbar

Has anyone been able to accomplish this? This is a rather annoying 'feature' of Reader XI

Guys, when you ask Adobe to be consistent and to allow easy removing of these items in the same way as toolbar items... You seem to overlook simple fact that "Tools" is in fact spam which is advertising Adobe's paid services, so obviously it's seen as revenue center. Gotta love sincere amusement of Adobe representative who probably really believes that this spam has value.
To Adobe rep: the users are never going to use these features simply because they don't expect this functionality from Adobe Reader. Adobe is not alone in this - many large software vendors make an effort to make their product the center of customer's universe, so they stuff it with all kinds of "value-added" junk. That's how Windows Media Player becomes a monster where the modest objective of playing video file is hard to find in the pile of libraries, catalogs, online stores and everything else. Makers of Winamp follow the suit by spending time of their developers on "library". You want to download driver for your printer, and this is 200MB "suite" with 20 constantly running applications that among other things check health of your computer and of course deliver oh so valuable "offers". It's not an overstatement to say that all these components are in fact spam and viruses - they are unsolicited software that finds its way onto user's computer without his consent, and it pursues commercial goal, so it fits the definition 100%. Ironically, the users are so concerned about "protecting" their computers from viruses that they buy commercial antivirus, while their system tray is already occupied by 50 "legitimate" "value-added" titles that bring their system to its knees. If those are not viruses, then what is. So, guess what, "Tools" in Reader is pretty much the same stuff, designed and created by the same spamming hands.
Your company would do so much better if you focused the efforts of your developers on the functionality your users really want - which is very easy to find on these very forums (and it's not anything even remotely close to the "Tools") - rather than listened to your "marketing team" , aka your own professionals spammers, who have no computing culture, so they recommend all this junk and convince your management that "it will sell". Did your company ever look at the sales generated by these features? compared them to the cost of their development?
Adobe Reader is very good product, and users like it - however they like it for very specific narrow purpose, and the fact that they like it does not mean that they are going to use it for other purposes - same as however you like your own car, you probably aren't thinking about using it for cooking your dinner. Would you appreciate if your car acquired a microwave occupying 1/3 of your dashboard? that's about how the users feel about your Tools.
