No tools in SMC
Just installed Solaris10 and finding my way with smc (Sun Management Console).
Got a prob...
On startup I can see the server toolbox (ThisComputer) and select it. Everything looks fine - but no tools. When I open the "This Computer" toolbox, I get the icons in the navigation pane but no tools appear to be installed.
I'm running on x86 PC. DNS name service. smc v2.1.0 (not changed anything).
Installed packages: SUNWmc, mcc, mccom, mcdev, mcex and *wbmc
any ideas please?
Hi,
When you install Personal oracle you will get oracle folder in the installed directory. But the startup and shutdown you can do it from the Start -> Programs -> oracle<dbname> -> Start Database or Shutdown Database.
First start the database and connect through the sqlplus and start working.

"load module" is grayed out in the "Tools menu" (SMC 3.5)
Hello,
I've installed SMC 3.5 Update 1 on a Solaris 8.
There is no problem when creating a new node. But when selecting the "Tools" menu to load a module, the choice "Load module..." is grayed out. So I can't load modules into any node.
When I try a "right-click" on the node, and select "Attribute Editor", I only have "Infos" and "Security" in the new window, but no "Module Manager" and other things as specified in the Sun docs.
During the installation, only the "Advanced System Monitoring" add-on has been selected.
Thanks in advance for your help. Can you tell me what kind of files can be
missing on the server? When you ran the SunMC install script (es-inst) it would have prompted you to install several different bundles (Advance System Monitor, Performance Reporting Manager, etc...). The bundle you need to say "y" to is the "Workgroup Server" package. (http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/817-4071/6mjke3qv6?a=view)
If you're not sure how you answered, es-inst logs to a /var/opt/SUNWsymon/install/(es-inst+timestamp) file you can grep through.
If in doubt, simply run /opt/SUNWsymon/sbin/es-inst again on your SunMC Server (it will prompt for the location of your install files) and the script will re-prompt you for any packages you said no to last time.
If that doesn't fix it, or if you just want to get it working now, there's a workaround to the blue-folder issue:

RAID-1 for root/swap on Solaris 10 x86
OK, now that I have solved my problem with the update manager I am in the process of trying to create RAID-1 volumes for root and swap. I am working my way through the process by following the procedure in Solaris Volume Manager Administration Guide. I have run into a few errors in the doc, e.g. referent to using installboot as opposed to installgrub.
Now I am trying to create my new volume using the Enhanced Storage tool within the Solaris Management Console. I get as far as trying to create the new volume (RAID-0) with the root slice in it but it fails with metainit telling me that the slice is already mounted on /. (No kidding -- that is the whole idea.)
Does anyone have a working procedure to create RAID-1 for root and swap?
(BTW, I am trying to do this from the doc and admin guides without stealing time from folks on the list here but I just keep running into walls.)
(Once I get that done I hope to use zfs for the rest of the storage.)

brian.lloydI am attempting to set up RAID-1 (mirroring) for root and swap. I am attempting to work from "Solaris Volume Manager Administration Guide," Part No: 816452012. (Same place you pointed me except I downloaded the pdf so I could page through it faster.) On page 105 you will find an entry for "Create a mirror from the root (/) filesystem," which directs you to page 122, "x86: How to Create a RAID-1 Volume From the root (/) File System by Using DCA.
I have two identical 300GB PATA drives with 20GB root/boot and swap partitions. The slices are all identical as to size and location, i.e. c0d0s0 is root and c1d0s0 will be the mirror for root. (I will use "mirror drive" to refer to c1d0.
Proceeding through the steps I have verified I can boot the mirror. I have created the slices. I have used fdisk to put the master boot block on the mirror drive. I have installed grub on the mirror drive.
At this point I am on step six which reads:
"Create a new RAID-0 volume on the slice from the previous step by using one of the following
methods. Only the single slice can be included in the RAID-0 volume. " At that point I decided to try to proceed using the Enhanced Storage Tool from smc.
As to RAID-0 vs. RAID-1, it is my understanding from the doc that one must first create the RAID-0 volumes, each containing just the single slice, one for each of the two volumes that will be combined to make the RAID-1 mirror, hence my comment about RAID-0.
I see your point about using the -f option to force the creation of the volume for the mounted root filesystem. One would think that, if they included the option of using the Enhanced Storage Tool that perhaps it might work. (I did not see a way to force the creation of the RAID-0 volume.) Certainly using metainit with the -f flag makes sense.
Next step will be to go back and punt EST in favor of using metainit from the command line.
I get the feeling that no one at sun is actually trying what is in the manuals to ensure correctness.

Hello,
is there a way to configure a serial port only to initialize, without using any graphical tools(like smc, admintool, etc)?Do you mind to elaborate more this question? All serial ports are initialized by default.
You can use stty to check the port configuration (the -a >< is a bug in the Sun forum. Use -a < instead):
[SunOS 5.9/bash] root@wgtsinf01:/opt/sfw
# stty </dev/ttya

My Mcbook cant find the host. I get some conection because my Utorrent has some donwload activity, but when I attempt to open any page i just get a time out and ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED. If i reset the SMC by removing the battery, google loads perfectly and it gives me search results without any problem. But when I click on any link, or attempt to enter a direct URL it gives me the error mentioned before.
I restarted the modem, changed the DNS, deactivate the firewall, conect the macbook via ethernet, change the IP, and nothing seems to work. This issue happened the first time i tried to conect to internet in a different country. Internet works fine in any other laptop or mobile device.
When using the assistant to run a diagnosis on the network, i get the first 4 items (wifi, wifi adjustments, network adjustments and internet provider) with a green light, and the other two (internet and server) with yelow lights (sometmes red light).
When i tried to connect the first time, i had a OS X 6.8 but i upgraded it to Maverick 10.9, since i had already donwnloaded it, and the result was the same.
anyone could help me please? We usually advice first to Reload web page(s) and bypass the cache in case of such problem and then do a check for extensions to see if any are causing the problem.
* Press and hold Shift and left-click the Reload button.
* Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
* Press "Cmd + Shift + R" (MAC)
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

15" MBP Mid-2010 (6,2) SMC 1.7 Broke my MBP
Hi All,
My beloved 15" Mid 2010 MacBook Pro is not well and is sitting on life support and is only barely amongst the living. On the 23rd Feb 2013 I noticed the SMC 1.7 firmware update in my AppStore App (this firmware was released on the 13th of Feb if I can recall correctly) and unfortunately I clicked install.
The update started to install and then stated that my Battery should be charged (it was 100%) and power plugged in (it was) and requested a reboot to which I clicked yes. Started rebooting and installing the firmware and rebooted once or twice automatically and then after the final reboot, screen black and no Apple Power boot sound. I left it for 5mins and then thought ok, maybe its powered down. Pressed the Bower button and all I could hear was the CD-Rom powering and no display and no sound. I tried the PRAM reset, SMC reset but nothing. The following day I took it to our only Apple Center (Live in Windhoek,Namibia) in the Country. The next day they phoned and said that my Logic Board is faulty. I told them that my MBP was perfect until the stupid SMC update. They told me that I can leave a kidney and a peace of my liver as for the repair costs will be something like US$900 or I could buy a second hand Logic Board for something like US$500.
This is a no go for me as for all was fine up until the SMC update came through. As for I had nothing to loose now anymore, I opened the MBP and removed the Battery and with the power cord disconnected and holding the Power Button for a couple of seconds and while holding the Power Button, connecting the power cord and after a few seconds releasing the Power Button again, my MBP started up. Problem now is that my Fans run 100% and the keyboard backlight is dead and the battery does not charge nor is seen by the MBP. I can now switch it off an back on and my MBP will power up and boot into OSX. If I do a SMC reset (holding shift control option while pressing power button), I am back where I started - MBP not power on, but battery charges again etc. Doing the whole battery removal again with power button pressing and only then connecting the power cord, it starts again.
After booting into OSX, I had a look at my system profiler and now see that the SMC version is 1.70f6 and as per this page http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1237 , my version should have flash 1.58f17 - Seems like there was a bug in Apple's SMC 1.7 Firmware code it it thought that my 15"MBP was a 17"MBP and now my SMC does not talk propperly with my hardware it seeems. I maild the Apple Guys here in Windhoek about my findings and asked them to get in contact with the Apple Geniouses overseas to find out if they could downgrade the SMC again or if they have a fix, but they don't want to help and just sayed I must have a look on www.apple.com/support and downloads and search for my SMC version and install.
That does not work as for the packages just say its not for my version - well my version is not for my MBP!
Is there maybe somebody that can help me or should I just throw my MBP away, of maybe wait 2 years in hope that another SMC version will come out that will load the propper SMC code onto my MBP? Please Guys and Girls out there - any manual way maybe of forcing a SMC firmware downgrade or reapplying the propper code of version 1.7?
Please and keeping fingers crossed.
MarkOk, it has now been three months since the last SMC 1.7 firmware update broke my mid-2010 15” MacBook Pro and having had it at two different Apple “Certified” technical centers and both told me that there is nothing that Apple can do except for replacing the Logic Board for something like US$ 500. I was not going to pay that amount for a 2010 MacBook to have its LogicBoard replaced so I unfortunately went out and bought a new MacBook Pro last month. Why unfortunately ............. BECAUSE I MANAGED TO FIX MY OLD MBP :-)
As of yesterday, I personally see a Apple “Genius” on the same level as the Petrol Attendants here in Africa that fill up your car! They know you need fuel to be able to drive your car, but that is where their knowledge or drive to figure something out stops. Ok, I am still very upset of having to fork out so much money for nothing. And yes, I do not like Apple personnel anymore, but I cannot live without my Apple machine (that is why I bought another when my old one was thought of being pushing up daisies).
I only managed to do this as for I had a brick lying around and I could not live with the idea that nothing can be done by recovering or downgrading the SMC firmware except for replacing the LogicBoard. I can also not imagine that Apple Personnel do NOT have a low level firmware recovery tool for the MBP 2010 and above models.
Ok, how did I fix it? By pure luck and by putting 1 and 1 together and getting 11 and not two :-)
If you happen to have a SMC firmware update that went bad on your machine, in my case the SMC 1.7 has three models SMC updates in one file and it loaded the wrong version onto my MacBook Pro, you can try the following:
Symptom:
MacBook Pro does not want to power up. You can only hear the CDRom making some noise and screen stays black and MBP powers off again.
Do this only if there is no other way around and when our of Warranty. Do this at your own risk.
The Fix:
Disconnect power
Open MBP and disconnect/remove the battery - close the back cover again
While power is still disconnected, press and hold the power button for about 5 seconds and then while pressing and holding the power button, connect the power cable to the MBP.
If you are lucky, your MBP will now power up with the fans blazing at 100% and keyboard backlight will be off. This seems to be a recovery emergency mode or something. If you MBP did not power up, try again. If your MBP does not power up then you have a different problem and don’t need to continue the following steps.
Boot you OSX and go onto the Internet and Download the right SMC firmware version for your MBP from: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237
Mount/Open the .dmg file and copy out the “Firmware”.pkg file.
Use Pacifist or the command line to extract the content of the .pkg file.
In my case the Apple SMC update had three models firmware in the .pkg file and the correct one for the Mid-2010 15” model was in the folder SMC18 or something. Find your correct model firmware for your MBP and copy out the following two files: SmcFlasher.efi and 2010MBP15.smc (the 2010MBP15.smc will be different for other MBP models)
Copy those two files onto the OSX disk drive to a location that you can remember like /User/username/Dowloads/smc or where ever.
Google and search for rEFIt . This is a boot loader app the will take over the boot process when you start up your MBP to enable you to go into a shell utility. Read up on how to install and how to activate the refit utility. When installed and enabled, the next time you reboot your MBP you will see the utility start up before your OSX boots.
If you see the rEFIt utility start after you rebooted the MBP, use the arrow on your keyboard and select shell and press enter. The shell.efi utility will start to boot in a “DOS” like window and after you see something where it wants to configure or setup something, just press ESC to cancel that.
After the util booted, you need to first change to your internel disk with the command “ fs1:” that is F S ONE Colon then Enter, standing for filesystem 1
Now you can change to the folder to where you copied the two firmware files like :
cd Users
cd username
cd Downloads
cd smc
There are different ways of going to the folder or find the place where you put the files.
After finding the folder with the two files you can start the update process.
First need to get the SMC into the right state
SmcFlasher.efi -reset 1
Your MBP fans should now quiet down.
Lets Flash :-)
SmcFlasher.efi -force -LoadApp 2010MBP15.smc -norestart
Your SMC should now be flashing with the right version. Once done, power down the MBP. Power the MBP back on and do a SMC reset and all should be fine now. You can now connect the battery again and start using your MBP.
Hope this helps somebody. No Warranty and this is done AT OWN RISK! -
After resetting the SMC the keyboard is inoperative. On the start screen appears a traslucent square with a horizontal bar in white, and a row of empty dots below (the same format as for example the brightness symbol). I cannot turn the Mac off with the power button, only with the trackpad, clicking on the turn off symbol on the screen.
When I try to login with my username, no characters appear as I type.
I can login as a guest, but from there I can do nothing, because the keyboard is still inop and if I wanted to, for example, have the software updated, I need to type an admin login, which is impossible.
Thanks for your helpWhat happens if you close the lid? Sleep?
In your place I would use sleep state to reset PRAM, as it can resolve your graphical mess.
Your keyboard likely was not powered after SMC/PRAM failure, so you will need to open MBP cover without opening the lid and disconnect battery power cable with insulated tools from logic board, wait for 5-10 minutes, then try to reset PRAM while keeping cover -
With TSM adware removal tool I was able to remove unknown software that was making ads pop up when using Safari. So the y don't pop up anymore. The problem now is that when I open safari It is still downloading websites and after awhile it freezes the browser. I have to constantly go to Safari Preferences to remove them and then the browser will start working again. What can I do to stop this?
1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

Your firmware can not be updated because the hard drive...SMC 1.3
Hi all !
I have a problem. I'm have a macbook pro Santa Rosa =
Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro4,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 3 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 800 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP41.00C1.B03
SMC Version (system): 1.27f1
This morning I saw the update for the SMC firmware (1.3).
Before restarting, I have this error :
http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/6606/26048579.jpg
Your firmware can not be updated because the hard drive partition scheme may not be supported. You must be booted from a GUID partiton or RAID scheme.
When I went into Disk Utility in order to check, here is what I have =
Name : FUJITSU MHY2200BH Media
Type : Disk
Partition Map Scheme : GUID Partition Table
Disk Identifier : disk0
Media Name : FUJITSU MHY2200BH Media
Media Type : Generic
Connection Bus : Serial ATA 2
Device Tree : /PCI0/SATA@1F,2/PRT0@0/PMP@0/@0:0
Writable : Yes
Ejectable : No
Mac OS 9 Drivers Installed : No
Location : Internal
Total Capacity : 186.3 GB (200,049,647,616 Bytes)
S.M.A.R.T. Status : Verified
Disk Number : 0
Partition Number : 0
I thought Boot Camp could be involved becauseI know it's the only thing related to the EFI.
I searched on internet, and Ifound nothing. There was a solution in order to reset the partition table, but the tool is no longer available. The link on on the application explains that I have to reformat my macbook pro. I find a bit weird to make this , I can't spend hours for backup / restore just because the SMC update does not work. have you any lead for me ?
Thanks ,
RaziqueHave you tried this:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X. -
I have a MackBook A1181 that I bought off Ebay :/ it came with pirate discs and no info....I need to upgrade my Safari so Outlook will work and would like to
get some kind of word/writing tool on it... the info is:
Model Name: MacBook
Model Identifier: MacBook1,1
Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
Processor Speed: 1.83 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 2 MB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MB11.0061.B03
SMC Version: 1.4f12
Serial Number: 4H631CVDU9B
Sudden Motion Sensor:
State: Enabled
Can anybody help?!First correct the pirate disc issue. Buy OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard from Apple for $19.99 here http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Snow Leopard is the latest version your macbook 1,1 will run. Oitlook is part of the Microsoft Office suite, if you want outlook you'll need to also purchase Office. If you can get by with Apple's mail program there are free alternatives to Office like Libre Office or Open Office. -
Solaris 10 X86 - Hardware RAID - SMC/SVM question...
I have gotten back into Sun Solaris System Administration after a five year hiatus... My skills are a little rusty and some of the tools have changed, so here is are my questions...
I have installed Solaris 10 release 1/06 on a Dell 1850 with an attached PowrVault 220v connected to a Perc 4 Di controller. The RAID is configured via BIOS interface to my liking, Solaris is installed and see's all my partitions which I created during install.
For testing purposes, the servers internal disk is used for the OS, the PowerVault is split into 2 RAID's - one is a mirror, one is a stripe...
The question is; do I manage the RAID using Sun Management Console and the tools OR do I use SMC?
When I launch SMC and go into Enhanced Storage... I do not see any RAID's... If I select "Disks" I do see them, but when I select them, it wants to run "FDISK" on them... now this is OK since they are blank but I want to ensure I am not doing sometinhg I should not be concerned with...
If the PERC controller is controlling the RAID, what do I need SMC for?You can use SMC for other purposes but it won't help your with RAID.
Sol 10 1/06 has raidctl which handles LSI1030 and LSI1064 RAIDenabled controllers (from raidctl(1M)).
Some of the PERCs (most?) are LSI but I don't know if they are chipsets used by your PoweEdge (I doubt it).
Generally you can break it down like this for x86:
If you are using hardware RAID with Solaris 10 x86 you have to use pre-Solaris (i.e. on the RAID controller) managment or hope that the manufacturer of the device has a Solaris managment agent/interface (good luck).
The only exception to this that I know of is the RAID that comes with V20z, V40z, X4100, X4200.
Otherwise you will want to go with SVM or VxVM and manage RAID within Solaris (software RAID).
SMC etc are only going to show you stuff if SVM is involved and VxVM has its own interface, otherwise the disks are controlled by PERC and just hanging out as far as Solaris is concerned.
Hope this helps. -
Solaris 10 x86 - SMC server not starting
Same problem as here :
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/solarisx86/message/12180
No solution yet ...
SMC server doesn't start at boot, and won't start manually with /etc/init.d/init.wbem start
starting it manually gives :
# export VIPER_HOME=/usr/sadm/lib/smc
# ./smcwbemserver -p 898 start
Starting Solaris Management Console server version 2.1.0.
endpoint created: :898
Solaris Management Console server exiting: internal initialization failed: Initialization failed for service com.sun.management.viper.services.Authorization.
Any idea?
I have a basic Solaris 10 setup, with Entire Collection selected.
My graphic card is not working so I had to install in text mode and access X remotely.I believe this is a fault in the crypto file that is mentioned in the Yahoo X86 posting, namely pkcs11_kernel.so. I have a possible workaround for this. Try looking at:
http://www.webmin.com
This is a free Web-based management tool that has most but not all of the functionality of the SMC. I tried downloading and installing the Solaris package from their download page, but this didn't work. What I eventually did was remove the package and download and install the generic Unix version, which was webmin-1.160.tar.gz as of when I downloaded it. The only gotchas to watch for are to run the setup.sh script and select Sun Solaris as the O/S, then select Solaris 9 as the version (they don't technically support 10 yet). I have been able to add users and groups and manage the disk without problems.

In the meantime, you should try to remove corrupt fonts from your system.
Check them with FontBook - it'll catch some of the most corrupt fonts.
Other tools may catch others that it misses. -
Hi everyone,
I'm hoping that someone can help me out with a kernel problem that I've been having on my late 2012 iMac.
Twice in the past week while doing some audio editing I've had a kernel panic. I've pasted the log at the bottom, but just for clarity, I have an iLok, Lacie little big disk, and a freeagent USB hard drive attached. There is also a focusrite interface hooked up through a Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter.
I appreciate any help that is available here.
Thanks in advance!

FireWire Device: SAFFIRE_PRO_24, Focusrite, 400mbit_speedThe hostile iLok device and the accompanying PACE software are designed to cripple your computer so you can't do anything the software publisher doesn't want you to do, such as upgrading your operating system without also paying for a new version of Pro Tools.
One of the prices you pay for using the products of a hostile developer is system instability. In this case, there may be a conflict between PACE and the Saffire driver. I suggest you back up all data and uninstall both according to the developers' instructions. Reboot and see whether there's an improvement. If there is, reinstall one or the other and test again.
If you find that Pro Tools is causing the panics, the ideal solution is to get rid of it and use the products of a competitor that doesn't think it has the right to cripple your computer. If that's not an option, you'll have to live within the constraints that Digidesign imposes on you. Set up a machine as a dedicated Pro Tools workstation. Don't install any other software on that machine or use it for anything else. -
