No tools responding

I've been editing some photos this morning and all of a sudden no tool seems to want to work at all. I tried the clone stamp which would let me select an area, but would not actually clone the item out. I then tried the text tool and all it would do is draw a line. I'm rather new to PSE and would appreciate any help you can give me. Thank you.

I checked it and I'm in RGB mode. I did a little test tonight and tried a couple of my other photos that I saved as .psd files. Since PSE9 doesn't automatically append the type of file, I took out the .edited-1 text. None of those will allow me to use the clone stamp. Some of the files when I saved them, I left in that .edit_1 text and some of those files will allow me to use the clone stamp. However, not all of them will.
i.e.: 04.psd -- none of them will allow me to use the tools
04.edit_1.psd -- some of them will allow me to use the tools.

Why won't my trimming tool respond?

Final Cut Pro X was working fine until the trimming tool stopped responding to all clips and story lines. I have tried to toggle the trimming tool on and off several time as well as toggling through all of the different tools. I've tried closing out the application as well completely restarted my computer. None of these tricks have worked. Has anyone else experienced this in Final Cut Pro X and if so what did you do to fix this?

Thanks Russ H, I won't be able to try out your advice until Tuesday but I definitely will let you know if trashing the preferences work out. As far as the problem goes, the mouse just doesn't seem to be repsonding correctly at all. None of the tools are functioning properly. In order to even just play the storyline from the beginning I have to double click at the beginning of the timeline and then hit space bar. Usually I should be able to just click once and it should recognize where i am clicking imediately. I feel like this is some sort of bug. It's not your average issue where you can just toggle the Trim tool on and off. Like I said, l will let you know on Tuesday how things work out with trash preferences.

Tools respond delayed when working in CS4 64 bit

So now i am workingon 8 gig memory and still once i need my marquee tool or actually any tool it takes up to 8 second until it even is available
then after it is i dra my.. lets say rectangle.. dont see it while drwaing but have to wait another 3-7 secs.
Can anyone relate to this and even more hopefolly able to help or tell me WHY???

Update you video card drivers from the manufacturers website?
Scratch disk on a seperate hard drive?
What percent of ram is allocated to CS4?

Typewriter Tool Erratic - not precise in placement of Text

Our department has a form that is partially completed from a database program, printed to PDF, and the remainder is filled out using the typewriter tool. After the form is filled, we use the flattenpages.js tool to embed the added text into the form. While I agree this isn't the most efficient way, it is what we have to work with.
Anyway, this works well on all computer except one...... On this computer, using the Typewriter tool produces erratic behavior and you can't position the cursor over the box to type an X. It will go above, below, side, etc. but not in the box. I can take the same generated form on my computer and it works fine.
My question: Is there a setting within Adobe or in the registry that would control how the tool responds? Any help would be appreciated.

Problem solved. Believe it or not it was Windows profile related. Logging in as a different user on the same computer - it works fine. Recreated the users profile and it is working as programmed. Who would have figured !!!!!!!!!

Correction: same issue -- pen tool drawing shows up only on the digital image on the screen. Not when printed. Well sounded like a good theory.
Problem remains: how to get pen tool drawing, made on photographs, to print.

Curt, believe I found the answer:
Create a new blank page, the size of the photograph to be worked on. The blank page is what the pen tool responds to only.
Add the photographic image to the new blank page (same size).
Now you can use the pen tool over the photographic image. When finished drawing, flatten the image with drawing, and print.

Perhaps you are talking about stroking the line?
Set the color and size with brush, then in Path window click on Stroke Path with Brush.

PS CS4 eating memory and not responding

I have PS CS4 (11.0.1) and for the past month and a half, using PS has been excruciating. Whenever I open PS, my memory usage goes through the roof, hanging out consistently in the high 90% range. The program becomes almost unusable whenever I choose the text tool. After choosing the text tool, I get the continual spinning hour glass, the black bar at the top of the screen shows up with (not responding) and if I try to click anywhere the screen goes faded and it's a crap shoot whether or not it comes back or I get the "program is not responding" box. After closing PS, my memory almost instantly drops to it's normal levels of between 30 and 40%.
Like I said, this has only been happening for about a month (maybe less) or so. Is there anyone out there that can help?

First of all, I want to say thanks for all the help so far.
OK, I called my brother-in-law and it turns out that he didn't install just a few fonts, he installed a few font packs, totalling about 4,000 fonts . I've gone through and deleted every one, other than system fonts, and the text tool responds a lot faster, but the memory issue is still plaguing me. Granted it's not nearly as bad as before, but it's still pretty slow. I checked the memory allocated to PS, and I've got 2 gigs total and a little less than 1 gig available to PS. My scratch disks (not really sure what those are) are my D and an external HD. Is there anything else I can check to speed this program up?

10.5.7 Makes Aperture 2.1.3 FLY

I have an old PowerMac G5 from Sept 2003 which I've upgraded over the years with RAM, a Radeon 800XT and larger faster internal SATA drives, but nothing comes close to the speed increases I see today after updating to Leopard 10.5.7
Easily 100% faster. In somethings faster than that. I can scroll through thousands of RAW images in Aperture 2.1.3 quickly and easily. Loading a Nikon D200 NEF RAW file now takes 3-4 seconds instead of 7-10.
Flickr slide shows in Safari 4 are seamless and quick. Pages load far far faster than ever before.
Dodge and burn tools respond instantaneously in real time.
Thank you Apple! This so rocks. It is like getting a new Mac for free!

Just to be clear, I upgraded my old first gen dual G5 with 6GB of RAM and an ATI Radeon X800XT to make Aperture even functional on this old Mac -- that and faster internal drives helped overall performance.
But whatever Apple has done in this latest 10.5.7 update in terms of graphics performance, I am seeing huge speed increases in Aperture with MY SET-UP.
For example: Selecting ALL PHOTOS in my 2009 Library (9,000+ RAW images to date) under 10.5.6 (and previous) used to take what seemed like a whole minute to BEGIN to display the thumbnails. Scrolling to the bottom of the page would yield placeholders until Aperture could catch up and that would also take literally minutes to happen.
I just checked and the 9000 plus RAW files were available in thumbnail form in 3 seconds and scrolling all the way to the bottom yielded images within 1 split second. Major major speed increase.
When using Apple's Dodge & Burn plug-in under 10.5.6 the lag between a click and its effect was several seconds, now I can paint with these tools in real time. Again a HUGE speed increase.
Of course just MY experience with MY MAC.

IWorks Pages Graphics

I have just purchased my Macbook Pro...I am used to using Word as my word processing software, but now have iWorks Pages. When creating documents in Word I can insert graphics from files that are included with the software. I cannot find any graphics in the iWorks Pages software.
Can anyone tell me where to look? Am I searching using the wrong terms (Insert...graphics or Insert...pictures or Insert...images)or do I have to import all graphics/images?

A research in the existing threads with the really cumbersome keyword "paint" would have returned 4 links.

Iphoto slideshow

Using I-photo '11, cannot open "themes, music, or setting" toolbars. Worked earlier with a slideshow(s) I was working on. Re-installed I-Photo and upgrades (lost all of my slideshows in the process). Back where I started. None of the tools respond when I create a new slideshow. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

A good general step for strange issues is to renew the iPhoto preference file - quit iPhoto and go to "your user name" ==> library ==> preferences ==> com.apple.iPhoto.plist and trash it - launch iPhoto which creates a fresh new default preference file and reset any personal preferences you have changed and if you have moved the iPhoto library repoint to it. This may help
This does not affect your photos or any database information (keywords, faces, places, ratings, etc) in any way - they are stored in the iPhoto library - the iPhoto preference file simply controls how iPhoto works - which is why renewing it is a good first step.

Compressing MOV to FLV

I was just on the apple.com site. I'm curious as to how they're able to compress their movie trailers and have them look so crisp?
If anyone has any idea I would be forever greatful. I have been using Squeeze but am not even close to getting my vids to look that crisp.

Hardware encoders/ a dedicated encoding server with sophisticated custom routines most likely. As already said - good compression is an art in itself, especially for web with limited data rates. There is no generic recipe. Different content or different sizes all require their own specific set of optimizations. that's why it's so difficult and some people swear by one program for one task, but use other tools for other stuff. Come to think of it, this is pretty much the same for BluRay/ DVD. There are a few things that generally apply like working uncompressed, getting rid of fields and block artifacts, preserving Gamma etc., but the terrible truth is, that you only know, after you've tried to encode. Therefore the only sane advise is, to use short clips to test out parameters, and only after you have found suitable values, do the full encode. The rest is just experience. With every encode you will know more about how your tool responds to adjustments and how it influences the quality.

Tablespace management with ASSM

Since ASSM is the default in 10g I was wondering how people are dealing with space management in their tablespaces? How do you know if you have enough space for the next extent of a table when you don't know how big the next extent is? Even if you did know the size of the next extent, how do you allow for the fact that the datafile for the tablespace is set to autoextend? And what if there isn't enough room on the disk for the tablespace to autoextend? What are you doing to deal with these questions?

We use ASSM for managing all of our tablespaces. Are you using the Database Control web page? On the Administration tab, you can specify how big you want each extent to be. For example, if you have a 10 Mg tablespace, and you set the tablespace size limit to 20 Mg you can then specify to grow in 1 Mg extents until you reach the limit. If you aren't using Database Control tool, respond and I will get you the command line syntax for managing your tablespaces.
What operating system is your database running on? Because you will need to monitor how much available disk space you have on your server, and how you do that depends on which OS you are running.

Photoshop tools dont respond after Windows 7 pro 64 bit installed

     I have the Abobe creative suite CS4 web premium student edition and I have recently upgraded to the Windows 7 professional 64 bit OS. Some of my tools in each program do not respond to clicks. In the Photoshop program my cursor in each tool is broken apart and I see 3 of the object such as an arrow or hand. Very difficult to fine tune anything. This is just one of the issues of many.
     I have tried to RESET the settings file by holding CTRL-SHIFT-ALT on startup and it had no effect. I've tried reinstalling my display drivers, upgrading my display and motherboard drivers from NVIDIA, formatting the Hard drive and reinstalling my operating system, and lastly I have tried reinstalling my Adobe Collection.
     I've run out of answers and need help.

Photoshop CS3 Extended "Not Responding" after selecting horizontal type tool.

Hello,
When I start my PhotoShop CS3 Extended v10.0 and load up a jpg and
then zoom in and go select the horizontal type tool and click on my
jpg, PS just freezes and then I click the main screen and then it
tells me infinetly that it has "Stop Responding"
I am running Win XP Pro SP2 (2600) 2GB DDR, ample HD space, Intel Core
Duo processor 1.66GHz.
Can some one tell me whats going on?

I have deleted the pref file vie the Crtl + Alt + Shft Meathod.
It still won't load up.
How did I get to the Crtl + Alt + Shft Meathod?
Good question..... I right clicked the .exe icon and selected
Run as , Current User and --> Unchecked <-- "Protect computer and data
from unauthorized program activity"
And SP started up with no problems.
BTW I wasn't being sarcastic with my last post as I see you used
all Caps in your reply which on the internet is considerd yelling.
If I had something sarcastic to say i would put in quotes "said with
a sarcastic tone", but i did not. I was mearly implying what the words
ment. I say what I mean and I mean what I say, period. Thanks for your help BTW and for now that problem still remains when clicking
the .exe file. Nothing has changed other then I can start PS when
following the directions I have stated here in this reply.

Are Photoshop and OS fully updated and have you performed the usual trouble-shooting routines (trashing prefs by keeping command-alt-shift/ctrl-alt-shift pressed while starting Photoshop, 3rd party plug-ins deactivation, system maintenance, font validation, etc.)?

Why is my direct selection tool not responding?

I have Creative suit 5.5 upgraded last year but cannot use ID as a couple of the application tools including direct selection tool just dfont respond. Any ideas?

If you have large fonts enabled in Windows 7 interface customization you cannot run an Aero theme with ID. You can leave the large fonts and use a classic theme, or return the font size to normal and keep the Aero theme.
The symptoms of this problem are not always restricted to the article description.
