No tools show selection

Hi, First of all I'd like to say that I've looked through pages and pages of this forum looking for the answer to my following problem...I appologise if it's already been covered and I've missed the post...
Vista home premium 32bit
Photoshop CS4  Extended
Problem I got is that no matter what tool I use, (marquee, wand, lassoo, ellipse) etc, I don't see the area/marching ants that is being selected untill I release the mouse button.
eg, open image in Ps
select rectangle marquee tool
place mouse arrow on image
left click once and hold
drag pointer to required point
Nothing different shown on screen No marching ant box
Release left mouse button
Marching ant box is now seen.
Same pc being used that has photoshop 7 on and that prog runs fine, or at least as it should do...
Have checked prog settings and couldn't find anything obvious.
Have also tried changing vista visual settings to no avail...
Kev

Thanks for the quick response John,
Currently running Ps 11.0.1
Latest NVidia drivers etc for GPU (Checked hour ago with NVidia website just in case)
And had already re-set preferences and settings to default.
However, I do seem to remember when first installed Ps seeing a pop up box from Adobe saying to update graphics for full gpu acceleration, I ticked box "do not show this msg again" and proceeded to NVidia site to update....That was about two months ago now though and haven't seen that pop up since....Obviously!!
Kev
****UPDATE****
Have managed to fix the problem by going to "Enable OpenGL Drawing" under Photoshop > Preferences > Performance and untick the box to switch it off!!!
Just need to test the program again to see what the repercussions are going to be...

Does anyone knows how to access the 'show selection' option programmatically.
As far as I know it is only accessible via Right click->Advanced->Show selection.

    Hi Timothy,
    I meant this option:
    which I can't find programmatically.
What I now do is enable it manually and set the selection off-screen but that is not a good method.

  • I'm wondering is there any way to see what tool is selected in full screen mode?

Question: Is there any way to see what tool is selected in professional full screen mode when tools and windows are hidden?
    Here's an example what i mean..i made a sketch
So what i mean is for example you are in full screen mode, and you press "U" to activate Rectangle Tool >>> you see like pop-up or anything similar that shows you what tool is selected.
    Thank you!

you need iPhoto v9.2 or Aperture 3.2 to view the stream on your Mac.

  • A keyboard shortcut from Type tool to Selection tool

I'm in a text box so I cannot use 'Space' +my normal key shortcut to change to the Selection tool. It's a long way to go with the mouse each time I need to do this. Depressing the CMD key changes the cursor to the Selection tool while I hold it down, but letting CMD up leaves me in the Type tool and in the text box, even if I click outside the text box while holding down CMD. In Illustrator I use a shortcut with OPT or CTRL but this does not work in InDesign.
Any ideas? I hope Adobe clears this up since not having a quick way to bounce back from Type tool to Selection tool via the keyboard is a real drag on a 30" screen.

I too use F1 for the Selection Tool and F2 for the Direct Selection Tool. I've also set F3 as the Preview button (previously the W key) and F4 is Scale Tool and F5 is Rotate Tool.
The great thing about assigning these keys to F Keys rather than character keys it means even if you have a cursor flashing in a text frame you can still switch tools without having to deselect the text frame. What prompted me to look into this was when I once noticed a rogue V and A in a text frame on a job I was designing! If it had gone to print with these letters showing I would have been in a lot of bother so I changed it. This shortcut was discussed on an early episode of InDesign Secrets Podcast :-)
I'd certainly recommend changing this potentially problematic shortcut, it's quite easy to to hit the V key when a text frame is live but out of sight on another page and then you have a superfluous character in your artwork.
If only I could remap the zoom tool to the Control key I'd be very happy. Does anyone know how to do that or is it embedded in the structure of the app?

  • Removed Feature: Preview Tools Show Colors

I'm a little bummed. One of my most often-used features is now missing from Preview.
While I'm coding CSS, I frequently use a screen snapshot of a website in progress, open it in Preview, and then select Tools > Show Colors to display the Apple color palette. I had grown accustomed to sampling colors using this tool, then adding them to the global color palette, which I am then able to reference in my other design programs.
For some reason, this function has been removed in Snow Leopard. I can't figure out for the life of me why this feature would need to be removed.
It was bad enough that the Apple color palette did not support web colors in HEX format. I had to use a 3rd party plugin for this functionality. But it matters not, since now it appears the only option is to open these snapshots in Photoshop just to grab a simple HEX code for a color.
Talk about killing a mosquito with a sledgehammer.
If I'm missing something, will someone please enlighten me? I've poked around in the custom menu items, just to make sure that this function wasn't simply tucked elsewhere. I can't find it. one might even think that the built-in DigitalColor Meter utility might serve this purpose, but sadly, it does not.
Is there an easier way to grab a HEX code from a snapshot?
    Thanks a million, Apple.

Thanks, micp. That's actually the plugin I've been using for a while. But the only way to invoke this tool in Preview is to select Tools > Fonts and then select the Colors tool.
Leopard's version of Preview had this function in the toolbar, with a convenient keyboard shortcut (Command + Shift + C ).
Still love the Hex Color Picker by Waffle Software. I'd be lost without it. Just wish it was easier to pull up that menu item.

  • Where is the tool to select a portion of an image to crop?

I am new to PS cc 2014.  Where is the tool to select a potion of an image to crop?

You'll find the Crop Tool on the Toolbar.  It might be behind the Slice or Perspective Crop tool.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 for Mac does not show up in Applications. Tutorial for editing from iPhoto shows selecting the Adobe software in Applications. Am I missing a step in registering product?

I answered my own question: There's a difference between "download' and "install." Hunt for "install" (1.5 hrs in my case) and line up your passwords, Adobe ID, etc, then install. Took 15 min. The right choice shows up in Applications. Now it's on to figuring out why photo selected for edit in iPhoto does not show up on screen in Elements.

  • Crop tool shows background color unless I switch to "Classic" mode

I'm not sold on the "latest" Photoshop being the best. I've seen more bugs now that I've subscribed to the "CC" version than ever before. Here's my latest issue..
When I activate the crop tool (I realize it's been rewritten.. not sure why), I see my current background color in place of what is visible in my current  workspace. Ultimately, completing the crop command, it crops as expected, and the background color vanishes. What benefit is this? It adds confusion and makes me a bit confused as to what the final crop result will be. Why was this changed? Why am I seeing my current background color? It makes no sense. I've been using Photoshop for nearly 20 years and this is just dumb. Can anyone explain?
    Thanks!
    - Sean

Yeah, that was pretty vague. I was in a creative mode and was rudely interrupted by this weird change, so I wasn't focused on a clear post. The lack of direct email support to Adobe frustrated me also. Alas..
Bascially, I have a layer with some image data, and transparent regions:
I select the crop tool, and select a region just inside the outside edge, containing the portion of the image I care about:
The background switched from being transparent to my current background color selection. I had this green chosen for some completely unrelated task. I can't find anywhere that this can be disabled. The settings I have are what I believe to be the defaults:
And, when I change the crop settings to "Use Classic Mode", the behavior is the more sensible (in my opinion) current background:
I hope that clears up the confusion. I can't imagine any use case where replacing the current visible background with the current background color makes sense. If it's a feature, I can't find any documentation, official or otherwise, that explains why this is happening.
Yes, I like the latest versions of software, but since I made the jump from CS4 to CC, I've hit more bugs than ever before. I've had to kill Photoshop a couple times in the past two months, whereas before, it never froze up or crashed on me. This feels like a bug, but if it's a feature, I'd love to know how to use the new crop tool's background settings properly.
    Cheers!

  • Always Show Selection

I want my TOC to always highlight the topic that is currently
displaying whether that topic was accessed directly from the TOC or
    not.
I have checked the 'Always show selection ' box in Single
Source Layouts/Properties/Advanced/TOC Styles but it isn't working.
I do have a vague memory of needing to set something else as
well but I can't remember what it is.
    Does anyone know?

    Hi Authorgirl
Yes, you need to edit the Window properties and enable the
feature labeled "Auto synchronize". I think it's located in the
lower left area labeled "Tripane options". I don't have RoboHelp
available at the moment and am drawing from pure memory.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Zooming whenever I double-click on any margin of pages with Hand Tool or Selection Tool selected

I have used Acrobat and recently upgraded it to Acrobat XI in order to use it with my tablet PC.
But whenever I double-click with my digitizer pen, with Hand tool or Selection Tool selected, on any margin of pages, it zooms in. i.e. it automatically magnifies itself as if I did the same thing with magnifying tool. This happens even when I try to double-click on the textboxes to edit it!
I don't want to zoom it all the time!!!

Try switching off this setting: Edit - Preferences - General - Make hand
    tool use mouse-wheel zooming.

  • How can we show selected values of a tree in a selectmanylistbox

how can we show selected values of a tree in a selectmanylistbox??

    Hi,
you can use a reference to a RichTree component instance and call  getSelectedRowKeys on it. The selected rowKey then allow you to look-uo the nodes in the tree. You can use a custom selection listener on the tree to be notified about each selection. There also is an API for the de-selected row keys, which you need to remove nodes from the select many list. The select many list will get its data from a managed bean in view scope (so the values survive subsequent requests)

  • Single click to show selected file in editor when in "edit view"?

Anyone know if there is an option to set single click to show selected file in editor when in "edit view"?  Instead of having to double click?

I would also like to be able to "right-click > edit source file" in multi-track view WHEN A CLIP IS GROUPED.
Currently, when a clip is grouped with another clip, if you select a portion of that clip to edit, then right-click it, IT WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO "EDIT SOURCE FILE" until you have ungrouped then re-selected it, which is cumbersome.
Not only do you have to do that, but upon returning to MT VIEW you have to remember to re-group that clip with the other clips, not being able to right-click and edit the source file of grouped clips adds unnecassary trouble and confusion to the interface, and for what?

Is your monitor profiled and calibrated, with a hardware tool (e.g. Spyder, Colourmunki etc)?
If there's no profile, or it's faulty, there can be problems.  In Develop module LR uses ProPhoto RGB colour space, but in Library module it uses Adobe RGB.  They'll look different if colour management isn't working, which requires a monitor profile that contains colour space information.
