No Top Sites or Cover Flow

On Safari I don't have the option for top sites or cover flow in history. I checked and I have the right graphics card and everything, but still refuses to give me the option after reinstalling it. This is really starting to tick me off...please help!

Add me to the list of people with no Top Sites feature. I have a windows XP SP3 machine both at work and another at home. The one at work is working fine. I open up safari 4 beta and get the top sites page. At home I just installed it and I don't even have any "top site" feature whatsoever. Any ideas?

  • Safari 4's Top Sites and Cover Flow is missing!

So I downloaded the new Safari beta and tried it out. Top Sites and Cover Flow was missing and I couldn't find it anywhere. I installed the latest graphics driver for my computer but still no top sites. Ugh - THE PAIN!
Specs: Windows XP Pro SP3, 75GB HD, 512 RAM, 96MB intel GRAPHICS.
    Please answer!!

is your graphics card compatible with DirectX 9.0 and,
also do you have DirectX 9.0?
if you don't you need to get it, without CoverFlow and TopSite's don't work

  • Blank page when opening Safari 4 - no top sites or cover flow

When I open Safari 4 Beta, I do not go to the home page that I have selected in Preferences or to any cover flow display of sites that I have visited, but to a blank page with the address "topsites://" that has a message on it which says, "Safari can’t open the specified address. Safari can’t open “topsites://” because Mac OS X doesn’t recognize Internet addresses starting with “topsites:”." In fact, I am never able to get any top sites or cover flow display at all. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Safari 4, most lately today, so that I have Version 4 Public Beta (5528.17). Any idea what I need to do? Thanks!

    HI,
    Try Open DNS
Try resetting Safari from the Menu Bar. Safari/Reset Safari. Check the top 5 buttons, click Reset.
Try deleting this file. com.apple.Safari.plist /Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and restart your Mac.
The only way to successfully uninstall Safari BETA 4 is to use the UNinstaller that came in the same folder when you downloaded Safari BETA 4. It doesn't really uninstall Safari, it just reverts your version number back to 3.2.1.

  • Can Top Sites & cover flow be disabled?

I do not use Top Sites or the cover flow display of them. Can these features of Safari 4.0.2 be completely disabled in order to conserve RAM and CPU usage?
    Many thanks,
    Neil

I appreciate your answer. But all I want to eliminate is Top Sites and cover flow of them. I want to retain cache and history unless I manually delete them.
When I go to Safari reset and ask it to eliminate cover flow and Top Sites, or when I go to the page displaying the cover flow and manually delete each image, neither step actually deletes because when I return to the Top Sites page, there are still cover flow images, and they happen to not be the sites I most often visit.
My only concern is I do not use these features and do not want to waste RAM or CPU usage.

  • Cover Flow in Safari

My Safari appears to be working well with the exception of Top Sites and Cover Flow, though the latter works fine in iTunes.
I'm not too worried about Top Sites, but I like the option of viewing my browsing history in Cover Flow.
I've tried binning Safari prefs etc, and also downloaded a fresh copy of Safari 4.0.4, but no success.
Any constructive suggestions would be most welcome.

    Hi,
Try Safari maintenance for TopSites and see if that helps.
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
If Safari unexpectedly quits, it could be a 3rd party plugins causing the problem. Go to ~/Library/Internet Plugins. Move any 3rd party plugins to the Trash and restart your Mac.
Also, if you are running Safari in 64 bit mode, try running in 32-bit mode instead. Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle next to General so it faces down. Select 32 bit mode. Quit Safari then relaunch.
While you have the Get Info window open for Safari, make sure it's not running in Rosetta.
Try using Open DNS - Free / Basic

  • Eliminate cover flow in Safari 4?

    Hi--
How can I get rid of Cover Flow in Safari? I'd SO much rather have bookmarks display in a Column view like in the Finder. I don't care how pretty a web page is--I want to know which folder I put it in and what it's called.
For now, I've dragged the cover flow view all the way to the top of the window, but I'm left with a MacOS 9-feeling list of bookmarks folders with expansion triangles to locate anything. Quite frustrating.
    Thanks.

I agree with you. The "report bug" is rather a misnomer. When you open the Bug reporter, you'll find there are various options in addition to reporting a bug.
Otherwise, Apple Care, if your machine is under warranty, or this feedback page are other options for voicing your sentiments to Apple.
Regarding the "locking" suggestion, Safari continues to create image files whether or not you are using Cover Flow and/or Top Sites. The suggestion is designed to stop unnecessary space usage on the HD. To see how big the file has grown on your system, go to Your User Account>Library>Caches>com.apple.Safari folder. Single Click on the WebPage Previews folder, then Command/I to open the Info Panel. That's wasted space on the HD if you are not using Top Sites or Cover Flow.

  • Top Sites Refresh...

    Safari 4: Top sites
My wife keeps "top sites" as her home page and it seems that it has taken on a new feature. Not sure why but when she starts Safari, the top sites fill in the images and then one by one they fade are replaced by the gray Safari image. This is a consistent behavior. After reading a couple of posts that looked somewhat related, I tried deleting the TopSites.plist and the com.apple.Safari.plist file and it's still the same behavior. Also, if I pin one of the sites in "edit" it doesn't seem to remember that setting either.
I ran repair disk permissions the other day and nothing too bad showed up. Any other thoughts on where to head?
    TIA

Based on your description, it sounds like she's trying to launch Safari from the Top Sites list somewhere on her Desktop, and you can't do that. You must launch Safari from the Safari icon on the Dock or in the /Applications folder.
Don't go around deleting things when you don't know what they are for or what the effect will be; you'll just create more problems for yourself.
    In the meantime, try this:
    1. Go to Home/Library/Cookies and delete the Cookies.plist file.
    2. Go to Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
    3. Go to Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Web Page Previews and delete the contents of that folder.
    4. If you don't want to use the Top Sites or Cover Flow features, open Terminal and paste in this command:
defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSnapshotsUpdatePolicy -int 2
then press Enter or Return and quit Terminal
    5. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
    6. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
    7. Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete these files (if you have them):
    Downloads.plist
    History.plist
    Form Values
    LastSession.plist
    WebpageIcons.db
Then Repair Permissions, restart Safari and see if the problem continues.

  • Top Sites not an option

Ok, I have searched "Top Sites" in every way here, and all of them seem to head in the same direction, so I will ask mine more specifically.
I personally run Safari on all 3 of my Macs and my home PC with no issues, however when I tried to install Safari on my mothers PC, I cannot get the Top Sites, or Cover Flow (but I'm not really concerned with for her,) to work for her.
    Info:
    System:
    Microsoft Windows XP Professional
    Version 2002
    Service Pack 3
    -updates current (1.10.10)
    Computer:
    AMD Athalon(tm) Processor
1.66 GHz, 1.00 GB of RAM
    Hardware Device Manager:
    Display adapters
    RADEON 9000 Family (MS)
    -drivers current (1.10.10)
    DirectX9 websetup (1.10.10)
I have installed/deleted/reinstalled Safari 4.0.4+QuickTime for Windows XP, Vista or 7 several times. (1.10.10)
What I am left with is a fully functioning web browser save the Top Site/Cover Flow options. Here is a screen shot of my options panel open. There is no option to add it to the menu bar. You might notice I have tweeted Safari already, so I am aware of what to look for to add it to my bars.
    http://gallery.me.com/skipperlandry/100052/top%20sites%20screenshot
I have also tried to do the much posted:
"Quit Safari. Now go "Start > My Computer". In "My Computer", go "Tools > Folder Options" and click the "View" Tab. Make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is selected. OK out of the Tab.
    Now Open Local Disk (C:).
    Open "Documents and Settings"
Open the folder that has the name of your user account on the PC.
    Open "Application Data"
    Open "Apple Computer"
    Open "Preferences"
Drag the com.apple.Safari file out onto the desktop.
Now launch Safari again. (This will rebuild your com.apple.Safari file.)
When it finally opens, can you see the Top Sites thingy in the Bookmarks bar next to the book, or the Top Sites button in the "View > Customise Toolbar" window?"
but I do not have the [com.apple.Safari file] in that location. What I do have is a file menu of:
    http://gallery.me.com/skipperlandry/100052/apple%20computer%20file%20meny
I did a Start>Search for com.apple.Safari forgot where I found it, but did manage to get it on my desktop. After running it, nothing changed.
I do hope I have given the information needed to figure this out, but if I have missed something, I would surly be happy to go get it.
    Skipper

Hi Skipper. It looks to me from your screenshot:
    http://gallery.me.com/skipperlandry/100052/apple%20computer%20file%20meny
... that you're looking in the wrong place for the com.apple.Safari file. In that screenshot, you're in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple Computer\ whereas you should be looking in C:\Documents and Settings\skipper\Application Data\Apple Computer\ for the prferences folder (assuming that Skipper is the name of the user account in which you're getting this behavior).
On the other hand, it sounds like you found it when you did the search.
Have you been able to determine whether or not this is a systemwide problem or a user-account-specific issue? (In other words, if you create a new user account with full administrative rights, log into it and try launching Safari, do you get Top Sites as an option? Or is it missing in the new user account too?)

  • Top Sites = Beach Ball of Death (Facebook)

Most of the time when I try to access facebook through the topsites, it causes Safari to stop responding and gives the beach ball of death. It occurred with my espn ffb page too, but facebook is more common.
Apple is just trying to make safari look like an iphone, but failed big time on this one. It's like Microsoft's blue screen of death, do you really want the same sort of association with the beach ball?
    Safari 4.03 on OS10.4.11

    HI,
It would be easier to help you if you would click: My Settings on the right side of this page and tell us which Mac you have and which Mac OS it's running. Much easier to assist you with your profile available. Thanks!
Is your Mac's graphic card may not be compatible or up to date for TopSites.
Safari 4: Top Sites, Cover Flow features require compatible graphics card
    *Safari 4 minimum requirements:*

-Mac with an Intel processor or a Power PC G5, G4, or G3 processor and built-in FireWire®
    256MB of RAM
-Top Sites and Cover Flow on Mac OS X Tiger require a Quartz-Extreme compatible video card.
Make certain you have that Security 2009-002 installed. Go to System Preferences/Software Updatess - Insatlled Updates.
Of your Mac meets the minimum requirements for Safari 4 ... try Safari maintenance.
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
from the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
    Quit Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Caches/Safari and delete all the sub-folders within that one.
Safari add-ons can cause performance issues or other situations

    Repair disk permissions:
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Top sites set forum (regular site) post to read

An odd thing i have with safari and top sites.
I am using top site when opening a ne w tab. When it shows it mark a forum tha is lokated in the top sites as visited, that meens my posts wich i did't read are marked as read (posts since last visit).
Can you mark a site as not to be shown in top sites ?

There are no forum police; everyone (well, most people) here is volunteering their time to try to help other users. Threadjacking is specifically frowned upon by Apple, and the Terms of Use you agreed to when you signed up for the service. If you had to keep multiple people and problems all clear in your head, you'd find it objectionable, too.
Neither your plugins or Flash have anything to do with Safari, so you're wasting your time reinstalling any of those. The problem is with something (maybe multiple things) that Safari relies on for the Top Sites and Cover Flow features. So, try this:

  • Top Sites!!! Windows Vista!!! Help!!!

Ok I recently downloaded Safari 4. Then a week later or so the whole lot was dumped from Vista to XP. That didn't work so I am putting Windows Vista back onto my Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pro laptop and i put on all of the things I had before, including Safari 4. Before I had Top Sites as that little button by the "show all bookmarks" button. But now after Safari 4 has been put back on it isn't there. I've tried restarting, it doesn't work so I am getting a bit annoyed. So here is the big question:
How do I get Top Sites back?
Any advice that works is greatly appreciated.

Haven't you changed the videocard? Because, without appropriate acceleration Safari won't switch Top Sites and Cover Flow functions on. I had such problem on some old machines.

  • Lost cover flow- how do I get it back?

I slid the history list view window all the way up to the top, to hide cover flow, and now I can't slide it down again. What has gone wrong?

Sorry, I was looking at Bookmarks: here it is in History
The handle you need to double click is such a dark grey you can hardly see it.

  • Top Sites/Cover Flow Graphical Problem - Still unresolved :(

Since I updated to Safari 4, I have been unable to use the browser effectively due to an error I can't resolve. Hopefully you guys can help!
Whenever I view the Top Sites page. It initially loads a plain black screen with the text along the bottom. No placeholders for the top sites are in place and no previews. Now, If I click OFF the window, onto the desktop background for example, all the content loads in (placeholder top site previews for example) basically meaning if i want to use this functionality I need to constantly click off and onto the safari window. Also moving over the interface after the placeholder or top site previews load in doesn't do anything. To get any of the animation to play I need to constantly click off and onto the window.
The same thing happens when using Cover flow to browse history. I can repeatedly click the arrow on the slider beneath cover flow, nothing happens, click off the window and back on, and suddenly it has scrolled across. I updated to Safari 4 since the Beta and have had no luck since (I am currently using the newest Safari 4 version) so updating doesn't seem to help. Also clicking on an image on the Top Sites doesn't load the animation smoothly, it loads about one frame of the animation! Also youtube HD videos seem to struggle.
It works perfectly If i try using Safari under a GUEST account on this computer. Also works fine on windows using a duel boot partition on this mac. I have a new Unibody Macbook Pro so the graphics card is fine. I have updated Flash, Java is up to date and I have tried deleting folders/files from Library that I have seen people suggest on other threads to see if that would also work for my problem. Uninstalling also doesn't seem to help.
If ANYONE knows anything that would help I would greatly appreciate the help!!! Getting desperate now!

I remember someone else had a similar problem after a computer crash.
IIRC deleting the iTunes preference files fixed it.
    Resetting the iTunes Preference Files:
You may need to make hidden files visible
    My Documents>Tools>Folder Options>View
Check Show hidden files and folders
    -- Quit iTunes
    -- Delete C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\ iTunesPrefs.xml
    -- Delete C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer Inc\iTunesPrefs.xml
For Vista the files are in:
    C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\iTunes
    C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes

  • Finder is not showing correct file in cover flow mode. The files shown in the top panel are one file off.

finder is not showing correct file in cover flow mode. The files shown in the top panel are one file off.

This problem occurs after I move a file or files to trash. If I remove one file, then the sequence is one file off, if I move two files to trash then the sequence istwo file off. For example, if I delete file 1 and highlight (click on) file 3, then the cover flow panel shows file 2, when it should show file 3.

  • Cover Flow in iWeb sites!

I just noticed there's a +Cover Flow+ theme in the new +BannerZest Pro+ ~ to try it out, click on this image and scroll to the bottom of the page:
...Uploading your iWeb site via FTP or to your .Mac account is fully supported from within BannerZest. And this new Pro version integrates seamlessly with media viewers such as LightBox and ShadowBox.
