"No Topics Found" RoboHelp8 (CHM File)
Using the "Search" feature in my .CHM file has begun to return a "No Topics Found" error.
For a little history, we have been using this same project for several years, long before I took over. Until this latest build, searching worked fine. Beginning last week, searching returns a "No Topics Found" result. I can find and access topics using the index, so I know that they are there but no luck using general search. I've tried manually adding keywords to several topics (under the general tab) with no luck. I've also restored backups of the project (from compressed .RAR files) and generated a .CHM with the same results.
The cause of this seems like it would have to do with some kind of setting that's been changed but I have no idea what. The only changes that I have made have been to the .CSS files we use (font type, size, and color changes), the addition of a few new topics/pages, and the use of J-Query witin those new topics.
Does anyone have any ideas?
I found this thread where Rick Stone has suggested a possible cause.

Link to a specific topic in a chm file from Word
Hi,
How do I link to a specific topic in a chm file from Word? I can link to the chm but can't work out how to get it to open to a specific page. I have tried #filename and \filename at the end of the path but neither works.
Thanks for any assistance.

Whether it works correctly on your C drive depends on how it arrived there.

Hello, all
The problem: I need to link to a specific topic within a CHM
file, via URL, rather than directly to the CHM file itself and I am
having no luck finding a means to do so. I have tried the suggested
methods from the support/web but not come up with functional code.
Help?
Thanks,
VUnfortunately, that isn't working, either.
I have tried the following:
<a href="ms-its:filename.chm::/topic.htm></a>
For this, I receive "Page could not be displayed."
<a href="pathname\filename.chm"></a>
This tries to download the file to the machine.
Any use that I've tried with a ::/filename.htm on the end
tends to give me page could not be displayed.
Thanks for anythoughts!

TimHi Peter
Thanks for your help. I have solved the problem thanks to your help. The key was the master page. Once I unlinked the topic from the master page everything started working again.
I created a new master page whe the same items on an used that and now everyting works as I would expect.

CHM file looks fine on my Desktop - but Topic contents missing in Dropbox
When I try to zip the .CHM file and mail it to the developer or when I upload it to Dropbox everything seems to be fine. The file is 5.8 MB (72 Topics)
But when he tried to open it all he sees are the purple "books" and the individual Topic Titles - but the Topic pages are not appearing.
What am I doing wrong?
He also needs the mapping numbers for all 72 Topics. I generated these - now how do I send them to him?
Where is the file I need and what is it called (BCCSDefualt.h ?)
I am using RoboHelp 10 on a Windows 7 computer - haven't used RoboHelp in 6 years so I am very rusty!
Peter Thayer
Thayer Birding SoftwareHi there
It's because of the security restrictions Microsoft implements for CHM files.
Have your recipient save the file to their local hard drive before opening it. If there is still no content visible after doing that, they will need to "unblock" using the instructions at the link below:

RoboHelp HTML 9 - CHM file Lost focus on selected topic on Content tab.
Dear all,
In my generated CHM file, I click on a topic on the Content tab, then I click anywhere in the content displayed on the right pane. The selected topic on the Content tab then not highlighted anymore. Why it happens like that ?
Anyone please help me explain this case and guide me solve that problem.
Thank a lot.
P.Hi there
There are a couple of options you likely need to configure.
First, Click View > Pods > Project Set up and look at the Window properties for your CHM.
Note the options I've highlighted below:
Next, Click View > Pods > Single Source Layouts and right-click the Microsoft HTML Help layout.
Choose Properties and look at the Single Source Layout properties for your CHM file. Once you examine them, click the Edit button next to "Advanced Settings".
The HTML Help Advanced Settings dialog shoul open. Click the TOC Styles tab.
From there, ensure you have the option I've highlighted below.
Hopefully this helps... Rick -
How to programmatically jump from one topic to another in a compiled CHM file
Hello,
I'm working with the trial version of RoboHelp 9.0, trying to evaluate it for my company before we go ahead and purchase it.
Basically I'm importing a Word document and then exporting it into a .chm file.
I'm using a programing tool to jump from one topic to another in the compiled CHM file.
The topic is displayed just fine but the content on the left side stays closed and doesn't open accordingly.
I'm not sure how to extract from the RoboHelp viewer a topic's HTML address to serve as an input for my programming tool.
I'll appreciate any idea.hi
say there are two infoobjects X and Y.
X is existing infoobject and Y in new one.
go to infosurce-search for X-create export datasource - map the rules and load the data.
This is one way.
Other way is u can use X as a reference object of Y so that both of them have same structure and both objects will share common database tables in BW which are exsting for X.
Hope this helps.
Kindly assign the points if it helps. -
RH9-chm file Bug when clicking on a sub-topic heading on TOC.
Hi all,
Today I have a bug that I wonder whether someone working with Robohelp HTML 9 has or not.
In my TOC, I create book 1 and then create page 1, page 2 for this book. The book linked to topic Startup.htm. Page1 and page 2 linked to two different bookmarks in this topic. Then I generated the project to .chm file.
On the Content tab, expanded the book, and then clicked page 1 or page 2 to see its content.
In the first time, the content of the selected page was shown on the right pane, but the book was collapsed automatically. --> This is bug ?
I had to expand the book again, I clicked and clicked again on page 1, and page 2, that bug did not occur anymore.
Anyone used to in this situation, please help me the resolution. Thanks.Hi there
From what I'm seeing I'm guessing the following items have been configured.
You are using the option to Single Click Books to expand them.
You are auto-synchronizing the displayed topic to the TOC.
Like Colum, I'm unable to duplicate the issue. I tried using both the 32 bit and the 64 bit versions of the HTML Help viewer. Neither version seemed to present the behavior you are describing.
However, I do note that when you have the setup enabled that you do, clicking any topic outside the book that is expanded will typically cause the Book to collapse. When you look at things in the Microsoft HTML Help Workshop, the option RoboHelp calls "Single Click to Open Books" is labeled differently. There, it is labeled "Only Expand a Single Heading". So the book collapsing is really sort of an expected behavior.
I might suggest the following changes. The changes I'm proposing *MAY* change the behavior.
Instead of pointing to bookmarks within the same topic that is linked to the book, duplicate the topic you linked to. Then remove the section you only want seen if they click the book itself. Link the pages of the TOC to the new topic. Additionally, you would want to edit the topic you link to the pages so that the part the book itself links to is removed.
My thought is that perhaps your odd behavior is stemming from the fact that your book and the pages inside are really linking to the same topic, just at different places. Perhaps something about that situation is confusing the HTML Help Viewer. And that triggers another thought. If it's a bug, it's not a RoboHelp bug but a bug in the HTML Help Viewer that is manifesting. And RoboHelp can't fix a Microsoft bug. Heck, even Microsoft isn't likely to fix it at this stage.
Cheers... Rick -
Plus/Minus Squares in .chm file
Hi Everyone...
Two questions, thanks in advance for the help. FYI: Using RoboHelp HTML, ver 8 with a project that has multiple folders and topics; also using it in a shared environment with multiple users, using RoboSource for version control.
1. Any ideas as to how I can enable the "Plus/Minus Squares" option in HTML Help - Advanced Settings? I want to generate a .chm file that has the plus and minus signs next to the book icons. I found the settings in the HTML Help Options - Microsoft HTML Help but they're grayed out. Trying to figure out how I can enable them so I can generate the .chm with the signs in help file output.
2. I have two topics that "disappear" everytime I go out of RoboHelp and come back in. I need to import them each time I open the project. I can see them in RoboSource. I can't find any way to unhide them -- I swear there was a way to just "unhide" them from RoboSource that I've used in the past but can't remember how I did it (senior moment, that won't end....).
Thanks!!Hi there
I'm not sure exactly why, but this goes back to the eHelp days. In their infinite wisdom, the developers decided that you would never ever want Plus Minus Squares unless you FIRST wanted Lines From Root!
So enable the Lines From Root and the Plus Minus squares should become enabled.
On the topics you don't see, I'm wondering if at some point you saw a message about files being outside the project and therefore not being shown in RoboHelp. If so, there was a dialog with a check box you could select that says "Don't show me this again". And sure enough, you aren't seeing the message that alerts you there are missing files.
Cheers... Rick

Shortcuts to a specific topic in a CHM
I was referred to the RoboWizard page and downloaded the Tips
n Tricks chm where I found how to open a CHM in its own window, and
in the tips, it provides a way to open a specific topic.
We are using the "hidden" shortcut option. We create a topic
just for the shortcut. In our app all of the CHMs are in one
subfolder, at the same level as the EXE's which are in their own
folder.
The Tips n Trix help says to use "hh.exe" as the program to
run. If I use that from the app to open the CHM I get an error that
says it "Cannot open the file"
For the "Program Parameters" I am using
"ms-its:circ.chm::/how_to_setup.htm"
If I use the chm file name instead of hh.exe, it works from
CHM to CHM, but only opens the main page from the application.
If I double click the CHM, and then click the link that goes
to a topic in another CHM, it works fine. The specific topic is
displayed.
If I open the application, click Help | Contents to open the
CHM and then click the link it opens to the "main" chm page, not
the topic.
How can I get it open to the topic from the application?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
JoeJoe,
What you are trying to do is known as "context sensitive
help." You can do this via shortcuts to hh.exe, but HTML Help was
designed to use map numbers from the application. When you write:
"If I open the application, click Help | Contents to open the
CHM and then click the link it opens to the "main" chm page, not
the topic."
I wonder what the application links are trying to do. Are
they also trying to call hh.exe? The protocol would be different
than from inside the CHM. The application should be using the
HTMLHelp API calls. One way to investigate the application's links
is to open RoboHelp's BugHunter. When you click on the links it
should intercept any calls to HTMLHelp and post them.
Hope this helps,

RoboHelp X5 "no topics found" in "Search" tab
There has been one workstation used for RoboHelp HTML
development/compiling and has no issues. A second workstation was
built with the same application/version (RoboHelp X5.0.2). After
compling projects on this second workstation, when a .chm file is
opened and the users perform a search via the "search" tab there
are "no topics found". If the same project is complied on the
initial workstation, topics are found via the "search" tab. Anyone
have an idea on what is causing this problem on the newly built
workstation?Below is information from the workstation that does not seem
to be compiling correctly. I registered the .dll, but the "search"
still did not function (did a compile of the project need to occur
after the re-registration?). I will be getting the result from the
workstation that is compiling properly shortly and will post the
result.

RoboHelp HTML 9 - CHM file The Back button works uncorrectly.
Dear all,
I am using RH HTML 9 to generate chm file from my project. The problem is when I click on topic 1, topic 2, topic 3 in turn in the Content pane. After that I click the Back button three times, topic 2 is highlighted on the Content pane, although the content of the topic 1 is displayed on the right pane. I think the topic 1 should be highlighed on the Content pane. Is it a bug of Microsoft HTML Help ?
Please help me understand what Microsoft HTML Help does in generating .chm within RoboHelp 9 ?
Thank you.Dear RoboColum(n),
The following is the report from my machine. Please help me check it. I really don't have experience in this. Thank you so much.

A common problem with HTML Help 1.x is DLLs not correctly registered during installation. This utility checks all components and registers DLLs if required. We also report if the RoboHelp DLL is registered, and if MS Help 2 components are installed and registered.
After running the report, try running your program again to see if the fault has cleared.

Error msg - not enough memory available for this task - chm file
Hi All
I am using RoboHelp for HTML 8.0 and creating chm file. I am using context sensitive help and the F1 key functionality. I have in the past created some map ID's with F1 and they have worked properly with our company software application. Now, I have a different database with our company and a larger help file and it is not working. I am told that the database should work. I also have lots of memory. I am working off of my hard drive which is where the .exe is for the company application and my chm file. I can open my .chm file. When I go into the application and press F1 where I created the map ID;s I get the message, not enough memory available for this task and also topic not available. Quit one or more programs to increase memory.
I have lots of memory and my file is only 598kb. I also only have RoboHelp and the application running. When I did a search, I found an article for a fix from 2004 from Adobe - Rb_46124 - not sure if this is the fix but the steps dont match since it is old.
Please help me.
Thanks
CarynHi there
Actually, if you were to use FlashHelp output, you might find that the problems are compounded, as now you have the Flash Player and all its idiosyncrasies in the mix.

Cannot Run CHM File on a 2nd machine
Windows Vista finally forced me to update an old hlp file to
chm format. Using Robohelp 5.0, I converted the hpj project to a
chm file. If I leave the file in place, all topics and pages
display fine. If I move the chm file to another machine, each topic
and page displays as "This program cannot display the webpage" (I
have IE 7.0 loaded).
It looks like the pages are just links inthe HTM file and of
couse, the source is not on the second machine.
Is there a switch I am missing?
Thanks
DougSorry, just found another post from Colum on 2/9. Seems like
CHM files don't work on network drives which is where my 2nd

Link / Merge chm files on Clients PC
Hi,
We have a main project and add in modules that we can distribute separately as required.
We would like to have 1 searchable CHM file, but do not want to include all of our add-in modules into the 1 CHM file.
My idea was that we have 1 main CHM, then it searches for other CHM files on the customers PC (in selected directories) and includes them.
Is this possible. I am willing to move to WebHelp if it is possible using that.
I am using Robohelp HTML 10.
May Thanks,
JoeHi Joe
Just to add another twist to things here, perhaps you have CHM A, CHM B and CHM C.
If you want to search CHM A and have it find results that are also found in CHM B and CHM C as if they were a singular larger CHM, you would normally have them in a single folder and have CHM A (or one of them) designated as the Master.
The twist here is that they wouldn't have to exist in the same folder. Sure, it's simpler that way, but if your developers have arranged things in such a fashion that you have CHM files in different folders, the information below may help.
If you look at your RoboHelp Toolbox Pod (View > Pods > Toolbox) you should find a utility there named HTML Help Registration. When you run this tool you are able to add CHM file references to your Windows registry. And that's the key point. When CHM file references exist in the Windows Registry, pathing location is added. Many eons ago I created some instructions that helped with that. In this case, you will likely be interested in the last bit of that topic where I talk about exporting a registry key that may be used to amend other registries.
