No Trashcan Icon, Unable to Delete Emails on iPad Air

Instead of a trashcan icon, I have an archive icon so I'm unable to delete emails. When I first open my mail, the trashcan icon shows for half a second then immediately changes to an archive icon. I have an IMAP gmail account. Also, it shows all of the emails I've ever had in my in box {over 3,000} as active which it shouldn't show any as active as they've all been read. This is my very first Apple product. I've only used Android products but have heard many raves over Apple products, so I decided to get an iPad Air to see what all the hype was about. So far, this iPad has left me extremely frustrated and wanting to return it to the Apple Store.

Wi of only iPads do not have a GPS chip installed for accurate locations. They depend on having the location of the Wi-Fi router to which they are attached have their location set in a database. Without that the Wi-Fi only iPad will have difficulty determining its location accurately.

There are two ways that should work. When you are in the trash folder, you can swipe on the email in the list - left to right - and a red Delete button should pop up. Or you can select - Edit - at the top of the list of messages and then select the message and tap delete.
Not sure exactly how this works - but if you have restrictions enabled - especially since you let your grandchild use the device - that may be restricting what you can do in the mail app. Go to Settings>General>Restrictions. If you have it set to on - turn it off or see if you have mail restricted.

Can't sign out of iCloud on Yosemite. Mail was unable to delete 'email'.

I have a MacBook Pro running Yosemite 10.10.1 and I'm trying to log out of my iCloud account, but it won't let me. The error message I keep getting says,
"Mail was unable to delete 'email'. Relaunch Mail then sign out of iCloud again." I get the same message if I try to delete the account from Internet Accounts.
I've tried adding the email account in, but it says it's already there. I've deleted the com.apple.mail folder rebooted and tried and still the same thing.
The supervisor and engineers at Apple phone support have yet to find a solution for this other than wiping my system clean and starting fresh. That's definitely not my preference.
Any help would be much appreciated!

I had the same issue. I rebooted to safe mode by holding the shift key at boot up. From there I went to System Preferences, iCloud, and I was able to finally sign out.

What domain is your email addy? Don't think there is much you can do about it. Seen others get in this bind with these small mailboxes. There might be a way round it depending on your domain.

Can't seem to send email from iPad Air.

Transferred from iPad to iPad Air Also upgraded to new iPhone. No prelims with email with iPhone. Receive but can't send email from iPad Air. Says server rejected email. Same email sent fine from phone. Suggestions? Settings are the same on both devices.

Found my own answer. Although I carried over settings from former iPad, the outgoing server was not set up completely.

Problems associated with deleting or moving email usually stem from failure to compact mail
folders, especially inboxes. This is because deleted email is not removed from the
application until you compact (expunge is the technical term). This can be done
automatically by a setting in your email account. Manually is simple enough. On any mail
folder do this: right click/compact (or File/Compact Folders). This is especially important
on inboxes but also, any folder from which you regularly delete/move email.
If you are experiencing problems you probably have a lot of uncompacted mail so be patient
the first time and watch the activity bar for its status (at the bottom of the application).

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

When I first got my ipad, I synced s photo from My Pictures. I am unable to delete it from the ipad by using the delete option. How do I get it off my ipad?

Go to the folder on your computer that those synced photos are in. Move those photos elsewhere then sync and the photos will go away.
Alternatively you can connect your device to your computer and open iTunes. Click on the name of your device and navigate to the photos tab. Choose a different folder or deselect any folder then sync. Your device will replace the photos on your device with what's in that other folder, or simply remove them all together if you deselect all photos syncing.
Given the difficulty of removing synced photos, I stopped syncing photos a long time ago. Instead if I want photos on my iPad I'll just mail them to myself...or you can use any number of photos apps that have the ability to sync/share data, or upload them to something like dropbox and then download them onto your device. Downloaded or saved photos can be deleted from inside the photos app.

hi peeps...
is it possible to delete ALL emails on ipad and iphone at once? its so annoying...once you delete 10 or 20 mails, older emails automatically start downloading again...i just want to wipe them all off, as I have them saved on my hotmail acc anyway.
any ideas?

POP email downloading already deleted emails on iPad 1

On my iPad 1, I will look at and erase email in my Verizon email account, but emails I have erased will often be re-downloaded again, sometimes almost immediately. It is very annoying. Sometimes it will re-download emails from days before. Does anyone else have this issue with a Verizon email account or any POP email account in Mail on the iPad? Is there some way to fix it?
I have my settings for this account to delete from server when removed from inbox.

Thanks for the response. However, the problem isn't that I get the same emails on multiple devices, that's something I am used to with my Verizon email account. Rather, the problem is that I am getting the same emails on the same device, specifically my iPad and iPhone 4S, emails that I have already viewed and then deleted on that device.
So, I will receive an email A, it shows up as a new email on my iPad with the blue dot next to it. I will view that email A, thereby making the the little blue dot disappear, and then I will delete email A from my iPad. Then, next time I open Mail on the iPad, it will connect and download the very same email A, marking it once again as new with the blue dot. Rinse repeat. Sometimes, it will redownload these emails even without me closing Mail and reopening Mail; it will just redownload them right after I've deleted them in the same session. Sometimes it will redownload emails from days ago that I deleted off that devices days ago.
This never happens on my MacBook version of Mail, only my iOS devices, and it's very annoying, as you may imagine, because most of these are pointless adds and filler and I like to keep a relatively small limit of emails per account on these iOS devices.

Then it is pretty much behaving as designed. With POP, one device doesn't know what another is doing. If you want to easily manage email on multiple devices, you should consdier moving to an IMAP account (or converting your current account, if your provider offers that as an option).
