No update can improve speed on Quad 6600?..

Have I, as an owner of a G5 Quad with a NVidia 6600-video card, understood this correctly:
1. Aperture relies heavily on videocard performance, as opposed to Light Room, Photoshop, Canon DPP etc.
2. The NVidia 6600 is not sufficent for Aperture to run smoothly.
3. I can't upgrade my video card to a NVidia 7800.
4. There's is no way that any Aperture upgrade of any kind will solve this problem, as that would mean rewriting the entire code of the software, to make it less dependant of video card performance.
Is it really as bad?...

Jeyell is correct. There are many of us here that purchased our new Macs with the intent of using Aperture. The 6600 video card was originally on the recommended list....no longer. On this page it isn't even a minimum requirement......
http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wo/0.RSLID?mco=8 D19F826&nplm=MA438Z%2FA
In the first month of the announcement, the Quad didn't have the 7800 video card as an option. My Quad had already shipped when the 7800 was added to the video card options. Aperture was also in my order with my new Quad with the 6600 video card.
Now after several months, the 6600 card has been removed, yet Apple has done nothing to help compensate those with the 6600 card. They won't even let us upgrade to the 7800.
My friend has a MacBook Pro with Aperture and doesn't get the Spinning Ball of Death like I do.
There is a small minority of us here with this problem and Apple has swept us under the carpet. I have sent several letters to Support and spent hours on the phone with Customer Relations. The most I was ever offered in compensation was $40 off on a $200 purchase in their store, ie. give us another $160 of your money and go away.
Keep up the battle.

    Things That Can Keep Your Computer From Slowing Down
    If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
    Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
    Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
    Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    Repair the Hard Drive - Lion
    Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
    Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
    For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
    OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
    OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
    I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
    For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
    When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand.
    Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    SuperDuper!
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
    Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
    Additional suggestions will be found in Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
    Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
    Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
    Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
    Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
    Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
    Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
    Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

    I was getting support for my Office 2008 for Mac, and the support tech said my OS was very slow. I have latest update for Snow10.6.7. Question; How can I speed up my Macbook?

    Hi
    In the first instance, I'd use Onyx and run through its sequence of maintenance and tune up tools:
    Verify, Maintenance, Cleaning.
    I'd also reset the SMC and PRAM (Google them)
    If that doesn't help then I'd look at System Preferences.. > Accounts > Login Items tab (not Login Options).  Check what processes get started at login and decide which ones you don't want.
    After that I'd use Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor to see if any processes are using a lot of computer power or if anything else nasty might be happening.
    If none of this helped then my final step would be to reinstall OS X.

    It's a function of your iPhone's data speed, which is a function of your physical location and your carrier.  Talk to your carrier about increasing your data speed (probalby unlikely) or get dedicated internet to connect your computer to, i.e. cable, fiber, etc.

    Hi ..
    Not enough free storage space can slow your Mac down.
    Click your Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage. Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.
    Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk
    OS X Tips Where did my Disk Space go?
    Check to see if the startup disk needs repairing.
    Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utillities
    Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
    Click:  Verify Disk (not Verify Disk Permissions)
    If Disk Utility reports errors, restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys. From there you should be able to access the built in utilities in OS X Recovery to repair the startup disk.
    Make sure to back up all important data first before using OS X Recovery.
    Anti virus software, as well as third party Mac cleaning utilities such as MacKeeper  and CleanMyMac can also slow your Mac down.
    For Safari.
    Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
    Type or copy paste the following
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
    Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
    Relaunch Safari to test. if that doesn't help, troubleshoot Safari extensions.
    From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
    If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.

  • FlasCC compiled swc library is very slow on first function call - how can I speed it up?

    Hi everyone,
    I have a C++ library that fits a mesh onto images of faces, now compiled into an swc.
    I have just exposed one function from the library, that operates on a BitmapData and returns a Vector of Points indicating various parts of the face.
    The problem is that the first call to the library (to process the first image) seems to take about 10 seconds. After that repeated calls take a fraction of a second.
    Is there any way I can improve the performance on the first call, by initialising my library class in an init method or something? In the target application most users will only call the library once, so I need to improve this.
    UPDATE: Profiling in Flash Builder, the [verify] action (which I understand is JIT bytecode verification) takes 10.1 seconds. The other main culprits are [avm1] (1.7s) and global$init.global$init (2.0s).
    Can this be normal behaviour that JIT verification takes 10 seconds? Or can I speed it up? The source C++ code is probably 100,000 lines because it includes several modules from OpenCV, however so does Alex Mac's OpenCV demo and it doesn't take this long.
    Below is the code for my library wrapper. Very grateful for any help!
    #include <AS3/AS3.h>
    #include <AS3/AS3++.h>
    #include <Flash++.h>
    #include "FlashCLM.h"
    using namespace AS3::local;
    // First we mark the function declaration with a GCC attribute specifying the
    // AS3 signature we want it to have in the generated SWC. The function will
    // be located in the com.FrameFish namespace.

    void fitCLM(){
              AS3_Trace("fitCLM starting");
              // Copy pixels to C ram

            "var imgPtr:int = CModule.malloc(ba.length);\n"
                        "ba.position = 0;\n"

              int shapeSize = 58*2; // Size of the imm_face_db markup
              int* shapeBuffer = new int[shapeSize];
              int result;
              clm.fit(pixels, width, height, shapeBuffer, &shapeSize, &result);
              // Copy shape to as3 shape vector
              if (result == ff::FlashCLM::FOUND){
                        for (int i=1; i<shapeSize; i+=2){
                                  inline_as3(
                                            "var x:Number = %0;\n"
                                            "var y:Number = %1;\n"
                                            "var p:Point = new Point(x,y);\n"
                                            "shape.push(p);\n"
                                            : : "r"(shapeBuffer[i-1]), "r"(shapeBuffer[i])
              // Clean up C memory
              inline_as3(
                        "CModule.free(imgPtr);\n"
              delete shapeBuffer;
        // return the result (using an AS3 return rather than a C/C++ return)
        AS3_Return(result);
    int main(){
        // We still need a main function for the SWC. this function must be called
        // so that all the static init code is executed before any library functions
        // are used.
        // The main function for a library must throw an exception so that it does
        // not return normally. Returning normally would cause the static
        // destructors to be executed leaving the library in an unuseable state.
        AS3_GoAsync();

    I never did get to the bottom of it. I got this response from Alex Mac:
    It's hard to give good advice at the C++ level because the problem is more
    of  a code generation issue. When a function ends up requiring too many
    registers to be live at once the resulting AS3 code can in some cases cause
    the verifier to take a long time to run. Exception handling and
    setjmp/longjmp can contribute to this, but so can things beyond your
    control when LLVM inlines too much into a single function and ends up
    generating unreasonable code...
    In the end I moved most of my C++ code out of flash and on to a server. To
    me flascc was a nice idea but didn't live up to the hype

  • Will upgrading ram improve speed in Mac and windows (VMware fusion)?

    I Am using VMware fusion for music production and that program requires a lot of workspace. I have a MacBook Pro 4gb ram and when I turn VMware on it goes to 2 gb ram in Mac and 2 gb ram in windows. My Mac speed is normal when VMware fusion is turned off but when I turn it on my Mac is very slow. Will upgrading ram improve speed in mac and also in windows (windows is also very slow)
    Btw my english isn't very good

    Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM hungry.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.
    In your case it will most likely help. You should plan on at least 8 GBs or more, depending upon what your model supports.

  • How can we speed up delta Process?

    Hi All,
    As per control parameter settings we have max. no processes as 6 and 10 data packages for one Info doc and its the same for that particular infosource settings.
    but when we schedule the delta info package( R/3 - BW ODS) it is using only one process and one (data package per Idoc.
    But when the data is being updated from ODS to cube its using 6 processes ( in SM66) and  almost 6-10 data packages( details tab in scheduler page).
    How can we speed up the delta load from R/3 to ODS, and make it use upto 6 processes.
    Where can I check these settings?
    Thanks in advance.
    Robyn.

    hi
    one of the method to improove the performance in loading to ODS.
    Go for PSA partintioning through RSCUSTV6
    and u can partition the ODS object also RACUSTA2
    then whole data set will split in to the several data packets in PSA and in ODS.
    hope it helps

  • Firefox automatically sends some data to mozilla so that we can improve your experience.

    i tried asking this in a similar topic and got no response and marked as answered so ill ask it again. i already had 'Enable Telemetry' and 'Enable Crash Reporter' disabled but i still got the popup. i'm not sure why firefox is saying it's automatically sending mozilla data when both options are disabled.
    it used to say
    will you help improve mozilla firefox by sending information about performance, hardware, usage and customizations to mozilla?
    but that was changed to
    firefox automatically sends some data to mozilla so that we can improve your experience.
    this makes me think firefox is still sending data regardless. so as long as both of those options are disabled firefox is not sending ANY info about me? if that's the case mozilla really needs to update the message. privacy policies are usually so vague and shadily written by lawyers that they are just about useless.

    Firefox 20 has a new message to prompt you to check your settings. This is in preparation for a future feature called health reporting, but currently the only categories are the same old ones: telemetry and crash data.
