No usb ports work, can't instal usb 3 driver

I received an HP Elitebook 8540w laptop from work, the hardrive was wiped with just the OS installed (windows 7 pro 64bit). I downloaded and installed all applicable drivers from here. Everything seems to work except the usb ports. There are three usb 2.0 ports on the left and two usb 3.0 ports on the right. None of them will recognize devices installed in them. My usb optical mouse's laser will flash for a second when it's plugged in and my external drive (1TB Passport) will spin up but never shows in nMy Computer as a accessible drive. Device Manager shows 2 Generic USB Hubs, 2 Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controllers, and 2 USB Root Hubs. Comparing this to my other Elitebook 8540w it is missing a Renesa USB 3.0 Host Controller Hub. THis was one of the drivers installed with the others above but it's not showing anywhere. I've since removed and reinstalled this driver several times with no changes. Runing the USB 3.0 Host Controller Uitility that installs with this driver gives a "USB 3.0 Host Controller not found error." Please help!

Hi, Please check your IT deparment, they may disable USB ports elsewhere. My working laptops (all of them) have same "problem", my IT department even disabled C: drive, optical drive I can't see them anywhere. I can't see Devive Manager. I can only use USB ports to charge my phone or tablet. Regards.

You should really read the manual.

They would only be where you put them. What program did you use to import them? Pics/vids taken with ipod are not part of the sync process at all. You should be importing them just as you would with any digital camera.
If you did not import them, then they are not on your computer.

USB 3.0 performs at USB 2.0 speeds have installed every driver i can find

Have tried absolutely everything I can think of. When I bought laptop it was on windows 8....
everything worked fine. But windows 8 and me didnt get on very well.
so downgraded to windows 7 pro and all is well in the world apart from the usb 3.0 ports. Neither of them work. No errors.

You are using USB 3.0 cable right?
If you haven't tried already, I would try uninstalling drivers from all USB ports and then uninstalling the USB ports themselves using Device Manager. Restart and then try installing USB 3.0 drivers again and see how it works out.
I think it's driver issue if the ports work fine, but only at 2.0 speeds , but I'm no pro lol.

Generally and at times we all have little idiosyncrasies appearing with the running of our Macs.
I use the same Logitech BT with my MBP. MB & iBook..(not at the same time) Only ever had one issue
and the cure was to completely Delete the mouse from BT -> Repair Permissions & Reboot then Re Install the BT mouse..Ihave just put a new set of batteries in the Logitech (only 2nd set ever)...L

It will not release from the port and the port is no longer working as a result of my efforts to retrieve the USB cord. I have been an iPhone owner since the first release in 2007. I have never had a problem with my Apple products and have remained an enthusiastic, loyal customer. It is my understanding that Apple only has "extra" USB cords in Apple store. I live in a rural area without access to an Apple Store. Retailers and Carriers did not receive shipments of extra charging cords. This is unacceptable. I am absolutely at a loss because my port in my brand new car is not longer functioning and will likely have to be replaced, AT MY EXPENSE. My "Lightning" cord is literally stuck in my vehicle. My phone is currently sitting at Radioshack being charged so that I have at least a charge when I head out of town on business early tomorrow morning. Suggestions please as I am a VERY unhappy customer!

I have tried mouse. keyboard and a generic USB stick with a LED. None of the USB ports work on the replicator. Everything works fine when connected directly to the W530. The replicator ports must not have power because the LED doesn't come on.

It can be the bridge. It could need firmware update. or the FW ports may be an issue. LaCie seemed to invent the phrase/tip 'resetting firewire ports' due to the issues with their drive cases.
You can try an SMC Reset.
So far I have avoided name-brand and tend to see them mentioned. Often with a new OS (though you are on 10.6.8, but when 10.6 came out there was a common complaint and thread of users: FW or USB worked but not the other interface).

You have to back them up to a computer. You would import them either to iPhoto or to the Photos app in your PC:

On my 6 month old HP Pavilion Notebook none of the USB ports work. In Device Manager it shows the USB attached devices as unknown. This computer hasn't had any HP updates since I bought it new.

Right Click on all devices which are recognized as unknown and Choose Uninstall one by one.
Please ensure you also do this for any and every item under Universal serial bus controllers as well. After this restart your computer and you should be good to go.

Will 800 MHZ Quicksilver USB port read a 2.0 USB Lacie Hard Drive?

I have an 800 MHZ Quicksilver, and was wondering if it can read (adequately), either a USB 2.0, or Fire Wire conected Lacie external Hard Drive?
I'm going to install the 1.2 Upgrade Processor:

But I don't think this upgrade effects the speed of the USB Ports?
I also installed a Multiport Fire Wire PCI card, but through this card, I get latency problems in regard to audio. It's not as fast as the built-in Fire Wire Port.

MacBook Pro Retina Problems with Headphone jack, Speakers, USB Port, MagSafe 2 and the hard drive

I took my MacBook Pro Retina 2.6GHz i7 to the genius bar to have the headphone jack looked at. I was told they could easily fix it but had to order the part. That day I took it home and returned to the store once I was notified that the part arrived so I could drop it off for repair. 3 days after I dropped my computer off with the genius bar I missed a phone call and returned to my iphone with a new voicemail. It said something like this, "Hello Tim, I just wanted to let you know that we replaced the headphone jack but it turned out not to be the problem and the problem was actually with the logic board. Don't worry though, we went ahead and replaced that for you, however, after that was done, the speakers stopped working but the headphone jack is fixed. We have to order new speakers to put in your computer b/c we don't have those on hand either."
Long story short, they fixed the speakers but, "had to order another part to repair the USB port." So I am waiting for that to be repaired but the dang AC Power to the actual computer does not work now!!! It's not the magsafe 2 charger that I have or the outlets I tried it in b/c I tried multiple chargers and multiple outlets. I am very frustrated! I have been without my computer for almost 2 weeks and still have to take it in at least twice more to get the power working this weekend and then again next week to (hopefully) get the USB port working.
At what point should I ask for a new computer or a refund? I have been using Apple Computers my whole life, I have had 8 different mac laptop models and have not had a problem until this computer. I am very frustrated with the support I have received from Apple as a whole.

Contact Apple Customer Relations and let them know that you're not happy. With the logic board replacement, everything else should have been evaluated and fixed at the same time. It sounds as if you just got a lemon. You could plead your case for a replacement unit, I would think, since your machine is being 'replaced' piecemeal...

Left side USB doesnot work with Maxtor 100GB portable Drive

The USB on the leftside of my new MBP 15" 2.16 120GB has suddenly stopped working with my USB2 Maxtor 100GB pocket hard drive. The RHS USB works fine with the portable drive.
The LHS USB port works fine with an external mouse.
I looked for the HW diagnosing software but could not locate it. However, the power-on self test is passed.
Does anyone knows how to check that the LHS USB is functioning properly and how to reset the drivers for it if any?

This seems to be a common problem for some reason.

I get the question mark in the folder on start up, but if i connect the same hard drive via usb it works fine is the hard drive faulty?

It sort of sounds like a startup disk issue. Have you tried starting up holding down the "Option" key? This should generally give you the option of which drive you want to boot from after a few seconds. Sometimes, especially if you had previously booted from an external drive (and it sounds as if you have) they system wants to continue booting from that drive. If it can't find it, it just sort of hangs there. Try holding down the "Option" key and see if your internal drive is shown as an option. If it is, select it. If you manage to get into the OS, go to System Preferences / Startup Disk and select the correct drive (even if there is only one drive shown, you should still select it).
