No utilities
My utilities folder is empty and I don't know why, most importantly i don't have an installer to open pkg or mpkg files. I also can't find my osx disc. Is there any place to donload just the installer or other utilities. I need them soon.

Hi, necky. Welcome to the Discussions.
You may not even need to reinstall the Utilities folder once you have a Tiger Install DVD. When files and folders suddenly "go missing" this can often indicate directory corruption.
Once you have a Tiger install disc, follow Steps 1-3 in the Procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. The procedure will check for, and repair, simple directory corruption issues. Then see if the Utilities folder is back to normal.
PS: As a tip for future question posts, please fill in your Discussions settings with complete information about your Mac (specific model, RAM, hard drive size, Mac OS X version, etc.). Click "My Settings" in the "Welcome yourscreenname" box in the upper-right corner of this page, then add those details to the "Computer" field therein. Use the "Other Computer Information" field if additional space is required.

Hey guys, I need some serious help. I have an external hard drive, iomega which apears to no longer work; I am sure it is something I have done and I cant figure out what! I am certainly not a computer expert and am in Turkey so I dont have access to a MAC store for assistance or anything like it. Yesterday I plugged my external hard drive into my MacBook and got a message telling me to refotmat. I looked up how to do so and through disk utilities thought I did it right. Now when I plug in the hard drive my laptop does not pick it up; the only place it shows up is in utilities, the same place I tried to repair and reformat. When I am utilities it looks like I have 2 hard drives, one under the other. One tells me the description of the hard drive, the other doesnt really tell me anything. So I erased both of them and I think that is where my problem is. Any help on how I could fix this? I tried to "mount" the one that is not "mounted but it didnt work....I dont even know what that means!!! Help!
When you erased the disk did you select Mac OS Extended Journaled as the format option?

Voice memos in Utilities disappeared
My voice memos in the utilities section have disappeared from my iphone4, but they are backed up onto my mac mini. How do I reload them back onto my phone?
No. After waiting over two hours on the phone with apple support, they told me the voice memos were somehow currupt and there's no way to get them back.

Not sure about Utilities on your iPad. Do you mean the Settings app?
First thing to try is a reboot of your iPad. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider until the Apple logo appear. Let go of the buttons and let the iPad restart. See if that fixes your problem. -
I cannot add a Wi-Fi guest network. Gone to Utilities>Airport Utilities and all I get is an image/browser of my Airport Extreme. Looking for the browser window which has the title Wireless but cannot find anywhere. What am I doing wrong?
Open AirPort Utility. The first screen looks something like this:
Click on the AirPort Extreme and another screen will appear. Click Edit, then the window with the Wireless tab will appear.
If you do not see these screens, you will need to start over and configure your AirPort again. -

Do mean to say that you have a hard drive attached to the USB port of the AirPort Extreme?
If yes, Disk Utility cannot "see" a network drive. You must connect the drive directly to your Mac first, and then run Disk Utility on the drive.
Your post mentions Time Capsule, but you may mean to say that you are using Time Machine to try to backup to the drive attached to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme. Might that be the case?
If so, you should be aware that Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port of the AirPort Exreme are not supported by Apple.
This may likely be the reason that you are having difficutlies....although a few users do seem to be able to make this work. -
My external HD won't show up anymore on my desktop nor does it get listed in disc utilities. I tried to cennect it to another mac but it doesn't show there either nor in that mac's disc utility. I happened to re-start the computer while the hd was connected and now it doesn't show up anymore. I use it for back-up via Time machine. I could re-format and do the back up all over again but then I need to find it first. Please, does anyone have any solution to this problem?
It sounds as though the external drive may have failed. There's nothing at all wrong with restarting your computer with the external drive connected -- that's a perfectly reasonable and normal thing to do, done by countless users every day without any ill effects.

I have a 2010 mac mini referbished and i dont see the Disk Utilitiy in the Utilities on the install disk. Is that because it is refurbished?
The software that comes with your refurbished Mini should be identical to that which comes with a new Mini. Disk Utility should be in Applications > Utilities. Alternatively, choosing Utilities from the Go menu at the top of the finder windownwill take you directly to the Utilities folder.

Some flash drives/USBs don't appear in Finder. But they appear in Disk Utilities so how do I get them to appear in Finder?
If you've never used them before (they are new) then they are not formatted for Macs.
Drive Partition and Format
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
When you want to remove an external device you must Eject it:
First, select the Desktop icon of the external disk. CTRL- or RIGHT-click and select Eject from the context menu. -
My ipad(1.1) jumps out of Appstore after I've viewed 2or 3 apps, seems to be happening more often now. It returns to the page the Appstore icon is on. When I select Appstore again, it opens on the page of the last app downloaded, then I can return and browse Utilities category until next crash. It has 20+ GB available of 32GB, 28 apps installed, I don't use iTunes. I don't know what OS is installed, it's not cellular enabled. I haven't checked other categories and unsure if reducing open browser tabs affects the problem, possibly lets Appstore run longer before crashing. It always crashes when I attempt to return to the category. OSVersion is 5.1.1, Update Check says software is up to date. It has crashed if I scroll thru the pages of apps too fast.

Have a macbook pro running osx lion. Connected a Kindle Fire using micro usb and the disk icon doesn't show up on the desktop. Also sometimes get a message sayiing computer doesn't recognize device. When I opened disk utilities the Kindle disk does show up there. What am I missing?

BBIPS - Command Line Utilities
BBIPS - Command Line Utilities - Just released !
I wrote these after working on the main bbips program recently, and decided that individual functions could also be seperate programs, sometimes making it easier to chain them together to do multiple operations to image files. This is the first release, and this contains 20 seperate programs to manipulate your images files.
To install these simply open a shell and run this command:
wget "http://bbips.org/downloads/bbipsinstall.sh"; sh bbipsinstall.sh; rm -f bbipsinstall.sh
This will do the following.
1. Create a directory if not already present "~/.bbips"
2. Download into that directory "bbips-clu.tar.gz" (http://bbips.org/downloads/bbips-clu.tar.gz)
3. Extracts everything from bbips-clu.tar.gz to "~/.bbips"
4. Removes the file bbips-clu.tar.gz (cleanup)
5. Downloads the file bbipsbashrc (overwrites it if it exists) (http://bbips.org/downloads/bbipsbashrc)
6. Checks to see if your .bashrc file has already been modified yet
7. If .bashrc hasn't been modified, sources in the bbipsbashrc file.
8. Exits
Now.... if you follow the directions, you will close this shell and open a new shell (effectively reloading your bashrc file for you). Now, from the command line, run the command "bbhelp"

bbcolorize | Colorizes all images. Format rgb.
bbgamma | Gamma correct for all images

bbindex | Creates a index.jpg of all .jpg (not .JPG) files.
bbgzip | Creates a GZIPped file containing all the images.
bbapcom | APpend COMments to the images.
bbrecom | Displays (REads) COMments on all images.
bbwrcom | WRites COMments to all images, overwriting any existing comments.

By the way, all the scripts do is run a java application (the CUP client) and pass it parameters. You don't really need them to use the CUP server (you could manually run the CUP client). -
I am trying to set an open DNS using the MacAir. But when I tried to flush the existing one at utilities/terminal, it will not work. I am using Yosemite. May I know what should be the command line so that I can shift to an open DNS? Thanks

Whilst performing a zero/erase install on my Powerbook G4 Firewire (aluminium) with an OSX Tiger install disk (Tiger was the OSX i had erased), I had to force quite the installer as it appeared to be stuck on the Chinese script install section. I crashed the Powerbook down using the power button method. Now, when i power up the computer, it stays on the grey screen and just beeps at me. If i insert the install disks (both OSX Tiger or the original Powerbook Panther ones) there is no volume found during the install process. In disk utilities no hard drive icon or volumes appear in the left hand list, just 2 headings regarding the OSX install disk. I have clicked 'Verify Disk Permissions' on these headings and receive this message in the action box: Error: No Valid Packages (-9997). All other options in disk utilities are not available to use (partitions section etc), as there is no hard drive recognized to perform anything on. I presume my erase install has wiped out my previous OSX Tiger without installing some essential on the Powerbook (receipts perhaps?). My Powerbook was working 100% before this install attempt. It's a very lightly used machine with no noises/whirrs coming from the hard drive that would suggest failure of some kind. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I have run the Hardware Test as supplied with the Powerbooks install disks and everything has passed. I presume i can put my mind at rest about it being a problem in any of those departments. I have been browsing for a couple of weeks now and think my problem could be a loss in receipts/permissions somewhere. I remember looking for a lost file awhile back using a hard drive search programme through Terminal. It filled my hard drive almost to the maximum with unwanted retrieved files, it took me hours to erase all this again (never found the document i was looking for either). Perhaps a receipt was erased/trashed at this time?. Sometime later (prob weeks) i performed a fresh OSX install to give me an uncluttered faster running machine (I do this once a year). I zero erased the hard drive (including free space) and it was during this install that i had to force quit. It seemed to be stuck loading the Chinese Script so i had no option. After this the problem as described above has been persistent. Is there a way to restore receipts/permissions through Terminal or something like that?. Or maybe a procedure that one has to do when installing a new hard drive?. A step by step guide from someone would be a real help as i am not really confident using these advanced procedures. -
Finder says Home Disk is full, utilities say I've only used 93Gb of 232Gb
Earlier this evening I all of a sudden got an alert that my disk was full, 232Gb. 0Gb remaining.
It said I needed to renove some files. I tried. I removed about 10 Gb, but it didn't give me any more space.
I booted from my Clone to to see if I could run dik utility repair. It came up saying the disk was fine.
Repaired Permissions. Everything came up OK there too.
I ran Disk Warrior from it;s disk and it came up stating that I was only using 93Gb of 232Gb. (Which is what I remembered and was about how much my recent Carbon Copy Clone added up to)
I tried WhatSize and it said the same. I'm currently waiting for a license for Tager Cache Cleaner to see if it will help. None of the utilities is finding any hidden large files.
I've also tried backing up the mail folder and removing Envelope Index, but, of course, that made Mail crash since it's being told there's no room on the hard drive. I'm totally stumped.
I imagine there's some corrupt file somewhere, but I'm not getting a fix on it.
Recent changes to the drive - I upgraded to 10.4.9 a few ays ago. Had to install a third party driver for my HP PSC 2175 - hpijs-foomatic-2.0.2.
Printer stopped working earlier today and I had to reinstall CUPS and then the driver again before printer would work. Sortly thereafter that I got the error message about disk full.
System info:
Machine Name: Power Mac G5

I have a batch of those job history files as well so thought I would try removing them and see what happened. I first got myself a root shell:

Hit return and entered my password, hit return again, then changed directory:

Which verified I was in the right place. I tried removing just one of the files:
NoobiX:/private/var/spool/cups root# rm c00001
which worked fine. I then decided doing this would be tedious, so tried this:
NoobiX:/private/var/spool/cups root# rm -r *
There is a space between the rm and -r and after -r before the * (a wildcard). That was probably a mistake since it not only nuked the history files but also the tmp directory. I should have probably used something like rm -r "c*" (since all the history files begin with c that should have got them and spared the tmp folder). I tried recreating the tmp folder with this:
NoobiX:/private/var/spool/cups root# mkdir tmp
Which seemed to work:
NoobiX:/private/var/spool/cups root# ls -al
total 0
drwx--x--- 3 root lp 102 Jun 7 12:00 .
drwxr-xr-x 7 root wheel 238 Aug 3 2006 ..
drwxr-xr-x 2 root lp 68 Jun 7 12:00 tmp
But being a suspicious sort I ran Disk Utility to Repair Permissions and it did indeed report an error on the /private/var/spool/cups/tmp folder, but it did repair the permissions on the folder successfully, so I'm assuming all is now OK. Of course, I haven't actually tried printing anything yet...
If you choose to try this after you finish type exit and hit return to kill the root shell, then quit Terminal.

Select the .dmg file and double-click it. FWIW, there's no DiskImage thing in Utilities on any of my boot volumes.
