No Verify Disk after 10.6.4 update

I just used the combo update to go from 10.6.3 to 10.6.4 on my MacBook Pro and now the Verify Disk button in the Disk Utility is grayed out. I have Repaired Permissions and zapped the PRAM but that did nothing.
Any ideas what has happened?

I booted into Safe Mode and launched the Disk Utility but the Verify Disk button was still grayed out. Then, I happened to look at the Enable Journaling button and is was NOT grayed out. So I pressed the Enable Journaling button which then turned gray and when that happened the Verify Disk button became functional. After rebooting the Verify Disk button was still functional.
Who would like to explain this one?

  • Extreme router reboots when trying to connect to disk after 7.1.1 update??

I just brought my new AE-n router home not more than 2 hours ago. I connected a USB disk to it and it was discovering it and was able to transfer quickly to it.
However, I updated my firmware to 7.1.1 and whenever I try to manually connect to the disk, my router restarts itself. I've tried resetting the disk and unplugging the router. I have not changed any settings other than the firmware.
Anyone have an idea? Can I try putting the old firmware back on? Thanks.

    Ok, I did that. UPDATE:
I downloaded 7.0 and 7.1. I installed both and also tried resetting the router after each firmware install.
The problem occurs when I try to manually connect to the disk using the disk utility. After I'm prompted and enter my login info, the disk light looks like it's being read and immediately after, the light turns amber and the router reboots.
I'm currently using 7.1. I can get the disk to connect fine when I reset everything, configure the router to my specs and then turn the USB disk on. HOWEVER, once I turn off the disk and then turn it back on, I can try to connect to it and the router will reboot again. Obviously I want the option to turn my disk off at night. 7.0 didn't even work at all, barely.
    Any ideas??

  • After clean install of Mountain Lion 10.8.5 no Gate Keeper and a ton a long list of differences in verify disk permissions after updating to Itunes 12.1

    HI everybody.
    I have a MacBopok Prop 15" from mid 2012, 2.6Ghz, Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM 1 TB SSD.
As my Mac was running as fast as possible it  was getting slower down during start and shutdown, from 2 secopnds to 15 secconds during start and shutdown . Apps were crashing sometimes a freeze, total crash which made me go directly to Recovery HD and not my log in page after all the tricks I know I took it to service center where they zeroed my SSD HD and reinstalled Mountain Lion 10.8.5. Strangly enough Gate keeper was not in my preferences and a old version of Itunes 10.4 if I recall. The Mac is still slow while I reinstall all apps from App store and one for one documents and folders from my latest TM back up.
Updated the Security update, and other updates had the same problem as many updating Iphoto 9.4.3 error 102, still have not been able.
But running verify disk permissions there is a massive list of Itunes differences while I have not  even added one song. At least 60 to 70 differences. I know a lot of these differences are nothing to worry about but a clean install without Gate keeper and an old Itunes which after update to 12.1 has so many disk differences, this can not as it should be also as I have not added anything from my Itunes library. Any feedback or advice would be very much appreciated.
    Greetings
    Matt

Do a backup. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Then re-install the OS.

  • Time Machine Disk borked after 2013-003 security update

I installed the 2013-003 update on the weekend, and conincidentally my Time Machine disk is now locked.  I haven't installed anything else really, so this Security Update is the only change I've made in recent memory, which makes me think that it is the cause, or at least the exacerbating factor.
Background: I have a 27" iMac 3.4GHz / 16 GB (iMac 12,2) with running Mountain Lion 10.8.4.  I have an external RAID array consisting of 2x 3 TB Seagate Barracudas in a Nexstar MX two-bay enclosure, with the enclosure hardware controlling the RAID.  This has worked more or less flawlessly since last fall -- that is until this update.   No raid errors from the enclosure -- as far as it knows the disks are in fine health.
After restarting following the update, I get a message that the OS has locked the Time Machine disk (my aforementioned RAID array) -- so I can read data from it, but I can no longer write -- I can no longer make backups. It mounted the disk, and suggested I use disk first aid to fix it, so I do.
Open Disk First aid, and set it to Verify.  I get some strange errors.  Don't take my word for it, here's the log:

    2013-08-18 15:30:01 -0600:
So since this, I can rarely mount the disk.  When I can, I cannot unlock it to back up to -- although if it's awful as it suggests, I don't think I want to.
But, it all seems a little strange to me.  This is RAID, I shouldn't have these problems, no?  I mean, the disks are fine -- although if there was an error on the primary, enough time has passed that's been copied to the secondary by now, so I can't swap them.
Has anyone else had an external disk go T/U after this update?  Is there some fix I'm missing?  I have a new external disk on order (with Thundebolt) so if I have to rebuild my back ups, it won't take as long as this guy over USB, but I don't want to forgo the versions of the files I have no going back some 2 years.
Any insight?  Is my backup borked, making me start over new and lose my back up history?  Is there anyway I can recover this disk, outside of Disk First Aid / sending it to a data recovery place?  Even do you think if I rolled back this update (if that's even a thing) would it set me back on track?
    Thanks!

I had the same issue after a re-build of mountain lion on an older Macbook pro.  I followed you link and instructions and it worked! Thanks wjosten

  • How to Continue Creating Recovery Disks after Updating Window 8.0 to 8.1

My laptop is hp 2000-2d62nr notebook pc (energy star) S/N: 5CG342027W
I might mess up the HP Recover Manager as follow:
I was attempting to create the recovery disks for the HP Window 8.0 laptop. HP Recovery Manager needed 5 disks. After 2 disks made done, I left my laptop for two hours. Then I returned to my laptop and saw Window to ask me to update Window 8.1.  And I updated it to Window 8.1.
After Window 8.1 update done, the system had been restarted. When returning to HP Recovery manager, it asked me to continue the third recovery disks. I selected "Continue". However, Disk 3 verified failed at 15%, the pop up window asked me to use another disk and try again. I attempted second times by restart my laptop. again, Disk 3 verified failed at 2%,
How do I clean this mess and make a 2nd set of recovery disks?
    Thank you for your suggestions.
    Best Regards,

I called the above phone number. Tech Support told me to charge $40.00 for recovery disks. I complained this and they transfered me to 877-917-4380 to talk with Case Manager. He agreed sending the recovery disks with no charge

  • Cannot Boot From Internal Disk After Failed Firmware Update

    Xserve 1,1 (Late 2006)
After a failed firmware update the server will not boot from an internal volume.
I have tried the firmware restoration CD 1.4 without success due to the following:
I press the sleep LED but only get the initial three fast blinks, not the next slower three blinks, and the last three fast blinks.
I can boot in Target Mode, NetBoot, from an installation CD. The volume with the OS (10.5) is recognized by another machine, but the server will not boot from it.
I have tried reinstalling the OS on another drive, and repairing the drive.
    I would appreciate any suggestions.

I read somewhere that it might have to do with the fact that it says "S.M.A.R.T. not supported" on DU. Is there any way to fix this? does it mean I'll need a new drive soon?
I think something else is afoot. I believe that, when you boot from the the system/install and run DU from there, DU does not recognize SMART reporting.
Before I recently updated my MBP to 10.5.7, I ran DU from the DVD to verify the disk before applying the update (I'm cautious about those updates). It gave the same report you are seeing. Once I was booted from the hard drive, the SMART status report returned to normal. SMART will typically report "failing, not "not supported" if the drive is going bad.

    what dose it mean?
I don´t have my Mac OS X installation disc with me and it is also not possible to buy one here. what can i do?
    thank you so much

Boot into single-user mode.  After startup is completed you will be in command line mode and should see a prompt with a cursor positioned after it.  At the prompt enter the following then press RETURN:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
If you receive a message that says "***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****" then re-run the command until you receive a message that says "** The volume (name_of_volume) appears to be OK."  If you re-run the command more than seven times and do not get the OK message, then the drive cannot be repaired this way. If you were successful then enter:
    reboot
and press RETURN to restart the computer.
There is no guarantee this will fix the problem. Normally you must boot from another drive in order to repair the startup volume. If you can't use a Snow Leopard DVD then you would need to use some other bootable device like a backup drive or another Mac connected via Firewire - Target Disk Mode.

You can perform directory repairs very similar to Disk Utility's *Repair Disk* routine by booting into Single User Mode and running fsck:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417
Any other repair method will require using your nonfunctioning optical drive or being able to start the computer from an external drive containing Disk Utility, so try fsck first.

  • Macbook Pro running slow/(crawling) after 10.9.4 update

I paste in information on the system from EtreCheck below.
The Macbook is really crawling very slowly.
It may be a coincidence, but happened when I restarted after the latest software update 1st july from OSX 10.9.3 to OSX 10.9.4
Regarding How does it behave/How slow:?
Now, every task that may require the use of resources not recently used (menus, lists etc.) will take exceedingly long time. For example after the desktop appears with the top menu, it will take 3-4 min before any menus can be pulled down, same with dock, 3-4 min to show up. Clicking an app, 3-4 min before launches. Then after launched, some apps may run OK, for example Logic Pro.
When working in the Finder. Opening a folder may take 3-4 min, before the the file list shows. Then selecting a file - takes a minute before it gets hi-lighted. But is then fast to drag to an open folder on the backup drive. Copying a folder to a backup drive, is also fast.
Another example: It took two hours from logging in at this Forum, until getting here to post.!! (I'll read answers from another machine)
    What I have done:
I have backed up with Time Machine,, in addition to manually backing up files.
I have ran Disk Utility and it reports the hard  disk is OK. I have ran fix permission, only two were fixed. No difference.
I have reset the System Management Controller (SMC). No difference.
It is not a network problem, My network is fast and smooth with other devices,
I don't want to change hard drive 'just in case'. It fast to restore files from the backup. However
I  have many licences apps and contents which will take several weeks to restore.  I've done that before.
Is it likely that it is the hard disk that is failing without disk utility having a clue?

You ask some  (5) questions regarding the output of Etrecheck
Re #4 :"Have you tried uninstalling the fastestyoutubedownloader.com user launch agent, in case that’s causing a problem?"
Yes, now I have.  Now it takes 40 min. from powerup to the login screen.!
My system report  showed as I posted, before the removal:
    "User Launch Agents:
      [failed] com.fastestyoutubedownloader.TrialExpired.GoldFreeFirstWeek.plist"
I am ignorant about the matter.  I too was surprised to find that item and the conspiracy deamon on my left shoulder had wild thoughts.
The app that generated the Launch Agent must have been FastestYouTubeDownloader.app,
It was downloaded as an app and no uninstaller. I think it was supposed to run fast  the first week, and if you paid for it(upgrade license), it would remain fast or else work slowly. I tried it on one file and then threw it in the trash, as I would have no more use for it. But a nagging/promo dialog telling me the trial period was over came up 1st july, while the nagging came up I was notified (by appstore) that a new update of my system required a restart. I pressed that, my system was updated to 10.9.4 and after the update everything was slow. So the conspiracy deamon was whispering that maybe the app had made everything slow, by mistake, and not just the FastestYouTubeDownloader.
    I really don't think so.
But I think the developers have to leave a mark somewhere to tell them that I have tried the software and maybe they have chosen the User Launch Agent for this?  Then trying to remove it may just cause more problems, since it is not anything I should be able to do for obvious reasons.
I couldnt see what it was really doing from its content, it seems to me it should do nothing if the application was not found.
    Re # 1 and #2
I have had these drivers all the time and not experienced problems with earlier versions of Mavericks.
Also, the ZOOM and the GR-55 is not connected.
Both had at least their own kernel-extension, a launch agent and a preference panel, but possibly more.
But I have now tried the Uninstaller that accompanies the GR-55 driver  to remove it.  It gave no improvements.
    Re # 5
I have apperently two Flash Players, both have the same version number, one is outdated.?
Probably not good, but probably not my main problem(s).? I'm not using Flash often.
    Re # 3
I have no idea, what the following listing
    Launch Agents:
      [invalid] entries
may refer to. In my HD/Library/LaunchAgents folder I only have
"com.zoom.R16DeviceManager.plist" the other entry in the report with same file name with added extension  ".svn-base" I have no idea where is coming from.
I think this is not my primary problem though? even if  I am curious where it comes from.
    My Conclusions
Obviously with a boot time of more than 45 min  doing diagosics and tests takes long time.
The Disk Utility verifies the disk as OK.   Onyx verifies the disk as OK (mabe the same test?).
I think my maachine is just getting worse.  There must be a serious problem, not  just a fine tuning issue.
The conspiracy deamon on my other sholder tells me that Apple have decided its time for me to buy a new computer again :-) ,It  would have been a good idea if not for the pain of  reinstalling licensed software which will require a 2 week vacaition doing nothing but restoring, Possibly having to purchase new licences costing more than the computer.

  • My G5's hard drive died after doing a software update while iPhone was connected.

My G5's hard drive was corrupted and unbootable after doing a software update while my iPhone 4 was connected. Coincidence or related?
Attempts at rebooting produced the file folder icon with flashing question mark. It's been a LONG time since I last saw that.
Disk Utility/First Aid reported that drive had "invalid node structure." The disk could not be repaired because it "could not be unmounted."
Is the failure possibly related to the iPhone being connected at the time of the software update and restart?

Possible the iPhone had something to do with it, but I like to make sure the Disk Directory & Permissions are good before any update.
Was that Repair/Verify done when booted from the Install Disc?
You must repair the HD,  if Disk Utility or fsck should fail to repair it then...
Your best bet is DiskWarrior, you need the CD/DVD though.

  • Have reformatted my Imac using original discs (installed leopard (10.5)) tried to do the software update but it cant download the itunes update and when it gets to the configure update screen after restart for main update, it just gets stuck. HELP!

have reformatted my Imac using original discs (installed leopard (10.5)) tried to do the software update but it cant download the itunes update and when it gets to the configure update screen after restart for main update, it just gets stuck. HELP!
The configure bar gets about an 1/8 full and then just does nothing. I think its lists the update as combo update? cant remember with out checking.
I have tried to do the disk verify and repair but this has made no difference.
Please let me know what i need to do, I have reformatted the mac just to start over as was clogged with a lot of useless data, I had installed lion (10.7) from the app store previously and now cant seem to find a way to re install lion. I hope I dont need to pay for it again?

If you erased your hard drive, you'll need to reinstll OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard to access the App store. You won't have to pay for OS X 10.7 Lion again. Did you try booting to the recovery partition by holding the command and r keys down? If that's still there, you can reinstall OS X 10.7 from there.
If you're looking to install the current iTunes, you need OS X 10.6.8 at a minimum.
If you're still trying to update OS X 10.5 Leopard, you can download the combo update from here.  Download, use Disk Utility to repair permissions, apply the update, then repair permissions again. That will take you to OS X 10.5.8.

  • Problems after 10.5.8 update

Since I updated my MBP to 10.5.8 I have been having issues. Many programs don't respond and I get the spinning beach ball constantly. My internet works very slow if at all. This problem is not just with the internet at my house, I also have the same issue with my parent's wireless internet too. My sister's MBP who has not done the update has no trouble with the internet when she is sitting right beside me. I had heard in an earlier post I can do a restore from Time Machine/Capsule. Which file on my computer do I need to be looking at to restore from once I start Time Machine?
Or - do you have any resolutions to the above problem with the internet? I have repaired permissions and done multiple reboots.
If I do a restore to an earlier date, do I lose the files I've created since I upgraded to 10.5.8?
Also, my iMac which has not done the update does not have trouble with my internet or running very very slowly.

To do a full restore from your Time Machine backup, follow the instructions in Mac OS X 10.5 Help: Recovering your entire system. Note that you start up from the Leopard system disc to do this & that everything is restored to the state it was in on the date of the selected backup. However, you can still restore selected files created after that date using the procedure in Mac 101: Time Machine for +Restoring specific files or folders+.

AFAIK, the only widely seen Internet problem with 10.5.8 is that with many but not all MacBooks & MBP's network access slows down dramatically when these laptops are running on battery power (but not when using the power adaptor). Since you seem to have multiple problems, I suggest you start by running Disk Utility's "Verify Disk" step to make sure the drive's file system is OK. Also make sure you have at least about 10% of the drive's capacity free for OS use, that the versions of any interface "enhancers" or other system modifiers you use are up-to-date, that there are no unusual startup or login items, etc.

  • Drag & Drop in finder and spotlight stopped working after 10.5.7 update

Fresh brand new iMac here, clean install 10.5.6, everything fine, copied user data back, all fine, applied 10.5.7 update, bang, admin and user can no longer drag & drop.
I did a permission fix which finds a LOT wrong, that worked, once, next restart gave me the same problem. Running permission fix did not resolve it this time.
Seeing the machine needs to be urgently used I'm re-installing but would LOVE to see a fix as I have 3 other machines with exactly the same problem.

    Try a restart.
Try trashing your com.apple.finder pref located in HD/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences, then restart.
Apply the stand alone combo update 10.5.6 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
