No video displaying on my MBP

I bought my Macbook Pro last July. It's worked well since then. I had a minor run-in with Applecare because my battery was overheating and causing cracks in my top case. That same issue is happening again with my top case, and I'm not sure if it's related to this problem or not. I pray it's not because my warranty is almost up and I really do not want to go through those headaches..
Anyways, it started yesterday. After forcing shut-downs multiple times by pressing the power button till it shut off, the screen stopped displaying video. It started up again somehow and worked fine until this morning when I had closed the display to do things around the house. I came back and the video did not display. I get start-up chimes and that sort of thing but besides that, absolutely nothing.
Recent programs I installed were Blizzard's Wrath of the Lich King Alpha. An expansion pack in testing for World of Warcraft. The Alpha was crashing due to some Assertion error. Could that have corrupted software on my laptop and caused my display problem?
At the very least, could someone tell me what Apple Stores usually do in this situation? I am afraid to come in and have them tell me I won't be seeing my laptop for a month.

Try starting in Safe mode. If the problem is still there under a safe start, then it could be a hardware problem and you will have to get it fixed under AppleCare.

  • Video  display freezes on MBP 2011?

I have a late 2011 MBP 15 inch.  I had the motherboard replaced a little more than a year ago due to display/video freezing and paid for it.  It is not happening again.  Will this be covered (cost-wise) as this is a known and documented issue with this model?

If repairs are made by Apple, outside the warranty period, they are guaranteed for 90 days.  Should there be a recall for a certain issue, then that would be repaired under the recall terms.  I know of any recalls on 2011 MBPs.
    Ciao.

  • Video issues on the display of a MBP 17

    Hello,
The display on my MBP 17 is not operating properly. Before I contact Apple I thought I would seek some advice.
The display bottom half is all video garbled, but upper half is working properly. When I close the lid placing the computer in 'sleep' mode and reopen, the display works perfectly for awhile. Then returns to acting up but there is no rhyme or reason for length when it returns to acting up.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you,
    Reed

See if this applies to you.

  • Installed Premiere Pro CS4 but video display does not work?

I just got my copy of CS$. After installing Premiere I found two things that seem very wrong:
    1) video display does not work, not even the little playback viewer next to improted film clips located on the project / sequence window. Audio works fine.
    2) the UI is way too slow for my big beefy system.
My pc is a dual boot Vista-32 and XP system with 4GB of memory installed and nvidia geforce 280 graphics board with plenty of GPU power. The CS4 is installed on the Vista-32 partition. My windows XP partition on the same PC with Premiere CS2 works great and real fast.
Any ideas how to solve this CS4 install issue?
    Ron

I would like to thank Dan, Hunt, and Haram:
The problem is now very clear to me. The problem only shows up with video footage imported into PP CS4 encoded with "MS Video 1" codec. So this seems to be a bug. The codec is very clearly called out and supported within various menues but video with this codec just will not play in any monitor or preview window. In addition the entire product looks horrible with respect to performance while PP CS4 trys its best to play the video. Audio will start playing after about 30 seconds. And once in awhile part of video shows up at the wrong magnification before blanking out again.
My suggestion to the Adobe team: fix the bug and add some sample footage to the next release so new installations can test their systems with known footage.

  • How can I use an external display with my MBP lid closed and disconnected to power?

I know that I can use an external display when my MBP lid is closed and it is connected to power. I was wondering why it does not work when the power cable is removed.
I only use an external display when I am at home so my MBP acts like a Mac Pro or Mac Mini in that way, but it is not good to leave the battery charging constantly on a MBP so I want to disconnect the power and use external display and have the lid closed. Is this possible or do I have to leave my lid open when running on battery power?

I'm plugged into my wall socket at least 90% of the time - probably more. I always make sure that I take my MBP off mains about once every two weeks and let it run down to about 30-40% and then plug it back up. This keeps the ions flowing and the battery healthy. My MBP will be one year old on March 20, 2013, and my battery health is still at 99%. I run in clamshell mode most of the time now - since I bought a 27" Apple Thunderbolt Display. Only occasionally am I off mains - and then because I'm exercising my battery, usually.
Don't worry about running of mains most of the time - just be sure and unplug about once every two weeks (or twice a month) and let your battery dip to the 30-40% mark and you'll be fine.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Photoshop cs6 psd saved file video display is degraded from original imported file

I have had some 16mm film converted to avi 1900 by 1080 pixels, 72 pixels/inch. Photoshop displays it ok. Then when I save the file as a psd and open it again the quality of the video displayed is deteriorated from the origional. Then no matter how it is rendered, it deteriates further. I am using a windows 7 computer. I have tried this with an Nvidia Quatro 1800 card and an Nvidia Gforce 760 card.
Why does not photoshop at least keep the quality of the video as origional in a psd file? I can understand offering to degrade the display for faster display, but not the rendering degradation. I have tried rendering at H.264 High Quality and DPX full range 8 bit, they both degrade the quality, even though the origional avi file is also 8 bit depth. Rendering degrades the colors considerably.
Where can I get information on what is going on in photoshop 6 as to how to control how it saves a psd file and more control of the rendered color depth?

I have to make a lot of color corrections because this is film taken from the early 40s to the early 50s. I tried doing it in Avid Studio, Pinnicle studeo and Corel Draws Video Studeo which is what Avid Studio became. None of them alow for the amount of correction allowed in Photoshop. I already owned Photoshop 5 so I upgraded to 6 to take advantage of its advances in video. The plan was to break the converted files up in smaller peices so that Photoshop could handle it and use Premier Pro perhaps to do other post production editing. The origional avi files are a movie about 1 hr and 15 min long and another one about 45 min long. The CODEX is MJPG in avi.

  • Video Output from 15in MBP

    Hi All,
I am looking for a way to output video from my 15in MBP to a ViewCast GoStream(has component and s-video inputs). Currently, the only solution I have found is the Matrox MXO, which would work, but before I go and spend a whole grand to buy it, I was wondering if there were any cheaper alternatives.
    Thanks in advance!
    Matrox MXO - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/434990-REG/MatroxMXON_MXO_External_HDand.html

    Hi -
Is your 15" MBP old enough to have an express34 card slot?
If so, take a look at the Matrox Mini, or a more ruggedized version, the Matrox LE:
    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/618347-REG/MatroxMXO2_MINIL.html
    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/650569-REG/MatroxMXO2LE_NL.html
If you have a current MBP, then your options are limited - which is why many lament the passing of the express34 card slot.
    Hope this helps

  • Satellite L650-1MM - Video display issue

    Greetings from Finland.
So, about a month ago I bought this laptop of mine, Satellite L650-1MM, and I've been wondering what the heck is the problem with video display. Dunno for sure is it a problem with the hardware or just something with the computers settings. I mean, even on youtube, I got so pixelated image when watching some 720p HD videofootage, that it hurts. Here's some evidence: [http://img822.imageshack.us/img822/6623/youtubena.jpg] And yes, I got the latest Flash Player plug-ins and all, so that couldn't be it.
And maybe, possibly, when I watch some ********** movies, tv-series or something, they all looke so pixelated. And I know that there's codecs and all, but I'm positive, that I got all that handled. As a matter of fact, in the beginning I had worse video display, but with codecs I got it a little better. Still, I'm far from satisfied. Now, I've heard that there might be some problems with Windows 7 and video display, but you know, can't be sure.
So, basically I'm here to rule out the possibility, that there might be some problem with the hardware. Could there be? The screen looks just fine, when normally idling and for example surfing the net, but streaming videos or watching some videos, oh man, oh man, it's so pixelated. I got the latest display drivers from Toshiba, BIOS-drivers too. Would it be any help, if I got the latest drivers straight from AMD's site (Ati Mobility Radeon HD 5650)? Does that even work? I mean when Toshiba updates their own display drivers and all, and very rarely what I've heard.
    Here's my laptops specs:
    Satellite L650-1MM
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit
    BIOS-version 1.80
    Intel Core i5 CPU M460 @ 2.53 GHz
    4096MB RAM
    HDD ~600GB
Ati Mobility Radeon HD 5650 version=8.723.2.0
    15"6, 1366x768
    True Color (32-Bit)
Conexant Audio Driver For AMD HDMI Codec version=4.98.26.0
So please, If there's any hint you can give me, I would very much appreciate it!
    edit.
Also, just remembered, that I had one more problem. When connecting HDMI to my 40" HDTV, and when I close my laptop screen, the sound starts to bug, and in some cases video too. So I have to keep my laptop screen open, so I can watch movies without any sound or video problems. What's with that?

    Hi
Please take a look to the settings called Choose what closing lid does. This can be found in the control panel -> power options
On the left you can see this option.
There you should choose Do nothing.
Furthermore in Advanced Power settings you can find the option called Multimedia settings
There is a suboption called When playing video. Both settings should be set to Optimize video quality
    check it out!

  • Hello to all: My iMac has developed a video display problem. It displays everything in cartoon like colors - purple, green, blue. Can this be repaired? Is there a way to output to a different monitor? Thanks in advance!  isplays

    Hello -
My iMac has developed a video display problem. Everything now appears in a strange, cartoonish way. Purples, greens, blues. Can this be fixed, and if so, any idea how much it might cost? Also, could I output to a seperate monitor? I plan to replace the unit , but cannot right now. Thanks!

Go to System Preferences > Universal Access > Seeing.
In the Display area, reset it to "Black on white" by clicking that checkbox.
You can also reset it by pressing Command-Option-Control-8

  • How to disable video display but allow audio?

    Hi,
I have been trying to disable the video display on Adobe Flash player, but I want the audio / sound to play without any video supporting it (playing) such as youtube and any other video supported by Adobe Flash. Is this even possible? It will be very much appreciated if I can do this.
    Thank you!

I'm not a hundred percent sure this will work for you since I've never used svideo out on my mac before, but if it works similar to dvi out, then do the following:
    1. Set you tv up as extended desktop rather than mirror. This will allow you to set different resolutions on the internal and external monitors.
    2. When you want to use the TV for front row, drag the Menu bar from the internal monitor to the external monitor in the monitors system pref. This will make your tv the controlling monitor and front row will play on it.
    3. When you finish with front row, drag the menu bar back to the internal monitor.
Again, this works when I have my dvi cable connected to my tv, I'm not sure if a svideo output is treated the same way, though I would think it should be.

And looks like there are bug, in app this video looks as expected, but in console it was cropped
Here are screenshot. I've used latest Navigator, downloaded from my account, to fix that bug with updater.

Huh, that's a weird little bug - thanks for taking the time to report it to
us (and with a great screenshot to help as well - other forum posters, take
note =) ). We'll file this bug internally and try to get it fixed in an
upcoming SDK release (should be a few weeks).
