No video in Final Cut when connecting VCR to DSR-11 to Mac G5

I do realize this post was from a few months ago but I have a similar question. I'm currently attempting to play video through a vcr to a dsr-11 deck into FCP to log and capture the footage from VHS. I've done this a hundred times, no problem. Now for whatever reason I am able to see video play from the VCR to my external monitor but I get a "preview disabled" message in FCP. I can't capture in SD and I also can't capture now from my video camera either, a Sony HDV 1080i through firewire.
Here's some details for my dilemna in re. to capturing VHS:
Power Mac G5, Mac OS X (10.4.4)
FCP 5.1
Device Control: Non-Controllable Device
Capture/Input: DV NTSC 48khz
Output of VCR plugged into DSR input with RCA cables. DSR is connected to the Mac by Firewire cable from DV In/Out port of deck to Mac USB port.
When FCP Device control is set on non-controllable device I get the message, "no communication." However when I change the device control setting to "FireWire NTSC" or "FireWire NTSC Basic" I get the message, "VTR Ok" but still have no video and "preview disabled" remains.
Here are some of the steps I have taken that have not solved the issue:
I have tried plugging in my FW cable into every USB port on my Mac
Tried a different FW cable
Reset the DSR-11
Restarted my computer and rebooted FCP
Trashed preferences
Set external video to all frames
Made sure canvas was set to “fit window”
Refreshed a/v devices
Ran an Apple Hardware Test (which resulted in no hardware issues)
I’m beyond confused and would appreciate any input.
Thank you!

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I have tried all of them with no success so I'm beginning to think the issue might be the settings in FCP.
Not likely. The problem is your DSR11's FW port or the cables or the G5's FW port.

Maybe I have the wrong settings. To double check that - can someone tell me what the settings should be for video coming from a VHS tape
VHS is meaningless in this scenario. You're feeding your VHS composite output to the composite input on your DSR. You must confirm that connection first. How you do that is basic video technology. You may need the manual for the DSR. You will certainly need a video monitor.
Then you must figure out if your DSR is capable of connecting to your Mac. The answer to that question is YES, any DSR11 can directly and easily connect to any G3 or alter Macintosh via Firewire. But maybe not your deck or your Mac or by using your cable.

and the settings for a mini-dv tape played from a sony HDV 1080i that I would be connecting via firewire to my mac?
That's not an FCP setting either. That's a question for you to determine on your end by checking the manual for the HDV source. you may not be able to play a miniDV tape in that camera at all. Most HDV cameras attach via USB.

  • What compression to use when Exporting HD video from final cut pro PAL setting

    Hi there
I'm trying to export my HD video from Final cut Pro so that I can edit it in DVD studio Pro. I initially exported it on H.264 setting however it then gives me the message 'NTSC assets cannot be imported into PAL projects' It was edited with PAL setting so I think it must be the conversion but i'm not sure which option to use.....been really struggling to get the 1 hour footage under 4.5gb without losing too much quality...
    Any advice greatly appreciated!
    thanks

    Just to add two suggestions.
    1) Consider putting your four movies on two disks.
    2) Bring your movies into Compressor and duplicate the stock DVD setting. In the Encoding pane of the Inspector, select a CBR and dial it back to around 6.2 to 6.5 Mbs. In Preview mark a small section and submit; you'll get 2 elementary streams, with m2v and AC3 extensions. Bring that into DVDSP and evaluate results. Adjust as necessary. (This is to avoid waiting out very long encodes and then having to start again from scratch if you get disappointing results.)

  • Burning a video from Final Cut Pro using iDVD

When I export and save my video from Final Cut Pro to a folder (export->Using Quick Time Conversion). When I do that there are several different videos that are saved in my folder (ie-Kelly Michelle; Kelly Michelle-av1; Kelly Michelle-av2; Kelly Michelle-av3; Kelly Michelle-av4; Kelly Michelle-av5).
iDVD is the program I need to use, I do not have any other programs. Therefore, I import the file to iDVD and once everything is ready in iDVD I try to burn the dvd. However, in the last stages of burning a window pops up and says that "an error was found during the burning process". It does not tell me what kind of an error it is. Does anyone have any advice or a step by step process that I need to do in order to burn my dvd successfully.

The simplest way to prepare a video for iDVD is to *Export/Quicktime Movie* (NOT Using Quicktime Conversion), select Current Settings, Audio and Video and, depending on your needs, other 2 options:
o- +Make Movie Self-Contained+ is preferred to have an independent movie (you can move the exported file, you can continue editing your FCP project before burning the exported version, etc.) but requires more disk space and more time for exporting.
o- +Chapter Markers+ (NOT All Chapters) must be selected if you created Chapter Markers in FCP (markers in the timeline, not the clip, and clicked the Add Chapter Marker button in the marker dialog).
The resulting .mov file (whether self-contained or reference) may be easily imported to iDVD.

  • HT5958 We are 4 min in to editing a video on final cut pro.  now my computer is freezing up.  I have heard that this is a glitch from downloading. (beyond frustrated)  is this from working from 2 external hard drives?  PLEASE HELP! =)

    PLEASE HELP. =)
we are about 4 minutes into editing a video for the first time on final cut pro x 10.1.  everything was going very smoothly, but then it started freezing up.  I had to do a hard reset and took it into the computer store that actually installed final cut for us.  they suggested that our mac actually is not capable of keeping up with final cut. (I FIND THIS HARD TO BELIEVE!!)  We work on an IMAC 2.66 ghz intel core 2 duo.  8 gb 1067 mhz ddr3. software os x 10.9.1 (hopefully that info will help for your suggestions)  Because we have soooooooooooo many hours of high def video, we are working off of two external hard drives.... is this a problem?? or do we really need to upgrade our computer?????

Like Russ said, check Activity Monitor and see what else is running and turn off any Applications that aren't needed.
Turn off wi-fi or disconnect the wire that goes to the Internet
Turn off Background Rendering (if you see an orange line on the top of the time line that moves along and gets shorter while you're not doing anything that is a good sign that Background Rendering is running.
I haven't used 10.1 yest but on the previous version there was a small circle approximately in the middle of the screen, about 1/2-inch or 1 cm in diameter, and it would have a number inside. The number is the percent complete of what is hapening. When it is Rendering the percentage will be shown.
Basically, you probably need to free up resources.
For what it is worth, my previous Mac Pro was a 1,1 2.66 machine, also with 8GB of, I think, 667 memory, and it would process FCPX 10.0.9 okay. It did have an upgraded video card, though.

  • Why they ask me get a compressor from App Store to export video from final cut since I use mavericks

  • Exporting HD Video From Final Cut Express HD

When attempting to export HD video from Final Cut Express using "uncompressed" setting, I notice that the output quality seems to be limited to "medium." If no compression is used, wouldn't that imply that the video quality should equal original footage?

All FCE Timelines are using the AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec) for HD stuff if you selected the correct Easy Setup before you started your Project.
If you export as a Quicktime Movie then you are getting exactly the same export quality as the Timeline.
The Quicktime Movie can be either Self-Contained or a Reference file. Reference Files are great because they use/reference you exisating captured files on your Scratch Disc, use less space and export fast.
However if you need to play the export somewhere other than your Mac your will require the file to be Self-Contained.
QuickTime Conversion does just that, Converts to whatever you select.

  • Exporting an image from a video in final cut

Hey Everyone, I was wondering if there is a way of doing exporting a still image from a video in final cut.
Sometimes when I want to do this, I just take a printscreen of the video Full screened, but I know that's probably not the best quality.
Hope you can help me out, thanks in advance!

You need to get a life. The guy has been waiting for days for you to answer his question. You didn't bother, so I simply offered him some verification that he's not the only one that has seen the problem. If you knew how to read (maybe you should read it again) you'll see that I was not offering him a solution. Grow up David.

It's not that I "didn't bother" to answer the poor guy, I've been making a living. Been shooting video and timelapse in Hells Canyon, on the Snake River, where my company has a series of hydroelectric plants. Fabulous weather, great scenery, and a sphincter puckering jetboat ride down and then back up two sets of Class 4 rapids. I got my priorities. I would not have traded the photography or the ride for the effort required to answer anyone's questions.
Thanks again for your contribution to the thread and your more recent character evaluation and time management suggestions. I'll keep them in mind in the same way I will try to recall Jim's Range Check admonition.

Your media is stored in Final Cut Events folder > "name of event"  > original media. The Final Cut Events folder is in your movies folder or at the root level of an external drive if you are using one to store your media. Simply open iMovie and under file menu select import movies. Navigate to the original media folder and import your clips to Imovie event library.

  • Can't import iPad videos in Final Cut Pro X

Hello there, anyone knows if there are recent issues in importing iPad videos into Final Cut Pro X?
I follow the ordinary workflow, and it all seems ok but at the end of the importing process a "!" yellow triangle remains attached to the imported clip and this one can't be played.
Already tried to make a high quality conversionand/or a proxy, the conversion process seems to start but it doesn't go further than 0%.
Thanks in advcance for your help.
PS: the videos have been teaken with the "Video Pro" app an then exported to the iPad "film roll".
PPS: in the importing window the clips can be played normally.

Russ, I succeed in importing some files by transcoding them in a proxy one by one (that is not in a work queue). Some other files simply stops the rendering process and make it hang until the closing of FCPX. Thanks for your time.
