No video in GoogleTalk video chat.

I just bought my first Mac, YAY! a 13" Macbook Pro. I'm trying to set up video chat between it and my wife's HP. I found Google listed their voice and video chat as being "Mac compatible", and I already have gmail, so I gave it a shot. It seemed to install easily enough on moth machines. I initiated chat between them very easily. On the HP screen, I could see both images perfectly fine, Mac camera transmitting, and microphone as well. However, in the MBP screen, I had all the sound form the HP, but no images. Just the apparent default black box with the gray outline person icon for both displays as though it is not recieving video from the HP or from the Mac's built-in HD camera. Or at least it isn't displaying the video. Any suggestions?
I also downloaded AIM on her HP, and couldn't get that to do anything but regular IM, no audio or video. I'd really rather use the Google Chat if possible, for no specific reason, I just don't care for AIM, and I never have.
Thanks in advance, Chris

Really? Nobody has had this problem? Nobody has a solution?

  • IIcannot invite my buddies to video chat. The option is greyed out.  I have ichat 6.0.1.  What's weird is that I was able to connect to the same users (who all have macs) when I first got my mac six months ago. I have a macbook pro. I am running Lion.

The video icon does not appear next to the users' names, and it is greyed out in the menu screen.  What is weird is that I was able to chat with the same buddies successfully in the past?  And sporadically, they are able to invite me.  But otherwise, it doesn't work.  I can't invite them to video chat.  They are all mac users with built in cameras, so why won't this work?  The video chat option was a huge reason for my getting a mac to keep in touch with my family.  Can you help me out?
    Thanks

    Hi,
So the Bandwidth Limit was set at None and is now set at 500kbps
This should smooth out any variances that high speed interent connections have.
    The Speed test results.
The Ping thing is measured in microseconds.
It is the time taken for one single packet of data to get to the server is question and get back info that it got there.
    Smaller numbers are better.
You then have Download speed. The Headline speed that the ISPs tell you about (They may even tell you have fast a movie of music file will download)
The Upload speed is the most important here as iChat is Sending (uploading) your Picture and Sound to your Buddy.
The results you post are in Mbps (Megabits per sec) or part of.
The Minimum for iChat is measured in kbps (kilobits per sec)
For 1-1 video chats this is about 128kbps  - So you have an upload about 6 times this.
The Min for 3 and 4 way Video Chats is 384kbps and you have about twice this speed (0.69Mbps = About 690kbps - more than enough)
    NOTE:
The math used here is rough - using based 10 whereas in fact it is actually base 8
    Some other Checks
iChat will Video to any Buddy using iChat form any type of Buddy List
This means it will Video to  Google Buddy using a Jabber Buddy List as long as the Buddy is also using iChat
The same is true in iChat 6 of the Yahoo option.
With AIM Names it should (I stress Should) also video chat to PC users using AIM for PC or the Trillian App with the Pro extension (which Costs) - people seem to get better result with Trillian than with AIM.
iChat will NOT video to anyone (PC or Mac) logged in to the Google Mail web Chat (either on iGoogle or and Google Mail page for their Account).
Nor to the Standalone PC app called GoogleTalk.
If you are using a Yahoo Buddy list it will not Video to a PC user using the PC Yahoo App nor to a Mac user using the Yahoo for Mac Beta 3 (not matter what build).
Any in this section will not show Video or Audio icons.

  • Video chat & Screensharing unavailable with Jabber account in Messages

    Dear all,
I use Messages to connect to 2 Jabber services: Google Chat and Facebook Chat.
I've read that Messages can deliver Screensharing and Video Chatting services for Jabber account. However I've never seen this option next to friends' name in Buddy Lists (seperate list). And whenever I select a friend's id (in GChat or FChat), there's always one available action possible: start conversation, and the buttons for starting video chat or screensharing (at the bottom of the buddy list window) are always greyed-out.
After much reading on this site I've still not found out the answer. Can someone helps me on this point ?
    Thanks a lot,
    M

    HI,
A Jabber specific App or a Web Browser with the Google Video Chat Plug-in  can do Video chats using the Jingle Protocol that Jabber apps use.
At one time Google seemed to use Flash to do Video chats and there have been reported conflicts with having both Flash and the Google Plug-in active  for your web browser.
    To state this another way.
Jabber apps tend to be a collection of modules.  One of these is the Jingle Library for Video Chats.
Google include this Protocol in their Video Plug-in for web Browsers.
I don't have a Facebook account and cannot tell you if Facebook uses Flash or a similar plug-in for web browsers.
iChat and Messages use a protocol called Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) to make Audio Only, Video and Screen Sharing Connections.
SIP is used with Voice over IP apps (VoIP) such as software phones that can use SIP.
Skype also uses SIP but is not compatible with iChat or Messages
What this means is that iChat/Messages will Video or Audio Only or Screen Share to other Macs using iChat or Messages apps irrespective if they are using Jabber based or AIM based names/IDs
What it will not do is connect to PCs using the standalone App called GoogleTalk or to Web Browser logins (on any Platform) of Jabber apps on any platform.
So a Login to Google Chat via a Login to Google Mail's Web Page or iGoogle with the Video Plug-in is likely to show you your Buddies available for Video chats where as iChat to Messages will not.
As Facebook is also a Jabber server the same things will apply.

  • IChat's Video Chat & IMs Supported

    Hi there,
What IMs are supported by iChat's video chat function?
I'm asking this because, I have tried GTalk on iChat, and the video chat button is greyed out.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
iChat uses the same Video Codecs no matter which Buddy list you start from.
Therefore it can Video - iChat to iChat from an AIM/Apple ID Buddy list that logs into AIM or viw and Jabber Buddy List (including Googletalk) to any Jabber Buddy that is running iChat.
Of course the Bonjour Buddy list invokes the protocols to Video to other MAcs on you LAN that also have iChat open.
The GoogleTalk App for PC and the GoogleTalk Plugin for Intel macs can not do Video with iChat.
Not can iChat Video chat to a User logged in to the GoogleTalk web based list in Google mail's page.
Jabber as a whole are working on thier Own Video solution.
GoogleTalk have gone their own way despite being a Jabber server.

  • After years of owning all things Mac, I am finally trying to use iChat, and can't get it to work. I see my buddy, but all I can do is send a message--the video and audio chat icons are gray, as is inviting to a video chat under Buddies.

After years of owning all things Mac, I am finally trying to use iChat, and can't get it to work. I am using gmail, and I see my buddy (no camera icon next to her name), but all I can do is send a message--the video and audio chat icons are gray, as is inviting to a video chat under Buddies. My buddy has the same problem as I.  We are able to do video chat through gmail, but I had hoped to use iChat.  I am using OS 10.6.8, iChat v. 5.0.3.  What am I missing?

    HI,
iChat will Video chat to another iChat in a Jabber Buddy List (Google run a Jabber server for GoogleTalk)
However it will not Video to the Web Page login to iGoogle or the Web Mail Page login.  (where people can Google Chat as it were in a  Web Browser).
Nor does it video to the Google Talk Stand alone app for PCs or any other Jabber apps on any platform.
iChat uses a connection Process called SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) which is also used by other VoIP devices.
Jabber/XMPP invited the Jingle Protocol for Jabber Applications.
Google have included this in their Standalone app and the Plug-in for Web Browsers on both PCs and Mac (you can get this as a Standalone Plug-in or as part of Chrome)
More on this here  This article has been changed several time in the recent months.  It now claims a greater involvement by Google in writing the Jingle Library (Although now Google's version does not work with the others)
This tends to mean that using the web Login to Google to Chat also cannot video chat to other Jabber apps that are using Jingle.
If your Buddy is using iChat then check the Video Menu has two items to Enable Camera/Video chat and Microphone/Audio chats are ticked.
In the View Menu the Show Status Items should be ticked (Selecting them toggles the tick and the function On or Off)
It could be Internet speed but at this stage I would doubt this at this stage.

  • How can I video chat with someone who uses web based yahoo?

Not long ago I purchased my first Mac (New MacBook Pro 2.53GHZ); last Summer I also purchased a MacBook Pro for my daughter. Everything works great (like driving a formula one Porsche after grappling with a battered pick-up truck (meaning Windows) for many decades; cannot imagine ever going back. But, there is one issue that I have not been able to solve and for which I would greatly appreciate any suggestions or advice. I am familiar with ichat and with AIM (my daughter uses it all the time). However, the vast majority of people with whom I communicate via IM live in parts of the world where very few people have even a computer at home much less residential internet access. As a result, near all of the folks I would be chatting with have to use public computers (internet cafes, libraries, etc) and obviously they cannot install AIM or anything else on those public computers. About 90% of them use the web based yahoo messenger which can be accessed from any computer with an internet connection (most of the rest use MSN). My question is this: I know how to do video chat in ichat but ichat does not support yahoo. How can I do video chat with someone who is using web based yahoo on a public computer that has a USB web cam? I was able to do this on my old PC which had a plug in web cam but do not know how it might work on a Mac. Should I install yahoo messenger on my MacBook Pro and will that work for me?. I know about some other Mac compatible chat clients such as Admiun but as far as I can tell none of them support video chat or in some cases yahoo. Perhaps I am overlooking something. I would be very grateful for any suggestions or advice in this matter. Thanks to anyone who reads this post and has any helpful info.

    Zurich,
I don't think the web-based Yahoo Messenger supports video, so nothing you can do with that.
    http://messenger.yahoo.com/features/
I think there are Mac compatible MSN clients that will do video, (i.e. aMSN) Also, Microsoft plans on releasing an updated version of Messenger for Mac soon.
    http://www.officeformac.com/blog/An-Update-on-Messenger-for-Mac
GoogleTalk does have a browser based video chat, but your friends would need to install a browser plug-in. (which I would assume that can't do either)
The best option is Skype, but also requires an install on their end (I would think that the internet cafes would/should have this available)

  • Video chat in Messages opens in browser??

Why is it that when trying to do a video chat in Messages, the video window then opens in a browser?!
First, my request would not go through.  I'd hit the video button and it was as if it wasn't even there.
Second, when my friend made the request, it opened up in my browser, and it was a terrible connection with terrible audio.  Which I believe is unrelated as I know the connection speed is fast, and I'm on a new Mac Air.
Dissappointed, and slow to adopt or understand Apples changes.  UGH.
ANY secrets or downloads to getting iChat back on Mountain Lion?

    Hi,
    Messages mimicking iChat.
I am much more an iChat person than iMessages and have mine set out like this:-
I have several Jabber and AIM based IDs and Screen Names in the Messages Menu > Preferences > Accounts
AS default any Non iMessages account being enabled will then show in the Window Menu under Buddies and CMD+1 as the keystroke (So you could have just iMessage and enable the Bonjour account).
This is technically a Combined list.
If you have a GoogleTalk ID and and AIM  name plus the Bonjour option enabled the list is still brought to the front by Window Menu > Buddies (CMD+1)
If you now go to the General Section of the Preferences there is a line that talks about "Gathering all Accounts into one List". (This is all Non iMessages accounts).
The Window menu will now show as many Accounts as you have logged in each with it's own Name and CMD +# keystrokes (well actually CMD+1 through CMD+9  and CMD +0 is used for the main  Messages window. Any more and they don't list Keystrokes).
If the Buddy lists are open when the app is closed then they will re-appear when you re-open the app without need of the Window Menu.
Apart from any iMessaging that you might need the interface part of the Messages window for it basically becomes a Tabbed Chat window.

  • What is needed for a PC user to video chat with me on ichat?

I'm a newbie at this....The easiest solution is to convert them to MAC! But that isn't going to happen! Desperately need to see my little grandson.....please help if you can.....the answer is probably very simple and i am going to feel a little silly.
My husband and I communicate just fine on video ichat between our two MACS....he uses an @aol.com id and i use a @me.com id

    Hi,
AIM for a PC or the app Trillian will do it (With an AIM name).
Trillian used to sell 3 versions until recently.  The oldest, ver 3.2, now seems to have disappeared from their site. It was on "Sale" at $15
They also seem to have renumbered the various releases as Version 3.2 used to be the same for Mac and PCs
The previous layout also implied the Mac version was the same as the Windows 4.2 version And the Beta option for version 5 has also disappeared.
Also if you have a Google mail Account and they do as well you cna both turn On the Talk option at Google and make use of GoogleTalk in a web Broswer.
iChat can make use of the GoogleTalk ID (It's your email in fact) and you can Video Chat to other iChat Users that Google or Jabber IDs (GoogleTalk is a Jabber server).
It will not however Video chat to the Standalone PC app of the same name or to anyone using the Chat feature in the Google Mail Web page (Different Protocols)
You can use other web sites to do Browser to Browser Video chats
See the options 9 through 11 (12 is now defunct) and MeBeam is now called Koowy.
These options need Flash to be enabled in your Browsers (both ends) and it will give you a Pop up to Click Allow for access to the Camera (Which you may also need to chose in one of the tabs)
I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my recommendation or link.

  • Video chat trouble in Ichat

    Dear all,
I am new to mac. I am using ichat for video and calling features. Ichat work fine with simple messaging options. But I cannot see any video or calling icons in front of buddies.. One of my friend who was on gtalk tried to call me. He was not able to call me because of the software i.e. iChat that I am using instead of gtalk. But I guess I should be able to call even if i am using iChat. I donot know how to solve the problem. Any help and suggestions would be highly appreciated. Thanks!!!

    Hi,
All the major Services for IM apps  (Which of course now include some form of Video and/or Audio Chat function) use different protocols from each other.
Google run GoogleTalk as a service and the basic server behind this is  a Jabber one.
This means you can connect to it using a Jabber capable app (of which ichat is one)
There other Mac apps that will do this (The Login and text chat part), namely ProteusX, Adium and Psi in addition to iChat.  (These three apps though don't do Video in Jabber (or other services)
Jabber apps on the whole though use a Protocol to connect for Audio or Video Chat called Jingle.
Google's version of this is not actually that compatible with other Jabber apps on PCs.
However Jingle is written into the Browser Plug-in (Intel only) you can get from Google to Chat in a Browser using Video and Audio.
iChat uses process called SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) to connect for Video Chats.
It will work iChat to iChat and  from iChat to AIM  or Trillian Pro on a PC  (you tend to be stuck using AIM valid names)
    So...
iChat to GoogleTalk app on a PC (There is a standalone App) will not work for Audio or Video
iChat to  Web Browser, Mac or PC, will not work as above.
Realistically it is simplest if you download the Intel Only Plug-in for your Browser and Chat from the GoogleMail web page or your iGoogle page.
(Or swap them to the AIM App on PCs -- the Google Web Browser chat may still be easier to set up)
By Inference the Yahoo option in iChat 6 will also only Video or Audio Chat to other iChat users

  • Re: No video with video chat.

I had my skype updated but to my surprise my video chat is gone. How to fix this? I thought this version is better but it's not working with me. I have iphone 5c. Pls help

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
iChat can Video with a GoogleTalk Buddy if they are on iChat as well.
It can Text chat to anyone with a Google Talk ID whether they are using the Google mail Chat option or using Jabber able Chat application on a PC or a Mac.
Text chat to Anyone anywhere on a Jabber Client (Application) or the Google Web Site.
Video chat only to other iChat users (iChat 3 or 4)
You Cna not Video chat to a MAc Buddy if they are Text Chatting from the Web Site option as that uses a Different set of Video codecs
These seem to be different again from the GoogleTalk app for PCs
(there is no Mac GoogleTalk app just the ability to use the names in iChat and other Jabber able chat Applications)

, For instant messaging, Does Tcp/Ip client server suitable?, or just rmi server enough for that?
So both IM and Video chat application what king of design shall i make?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
The GoogleTalk part of iChat will only Video or Audio Only chat with other iChat Users that have a Jabber or GoogleTalk ID (Googletalk is a Jabber server).
This means NOT to PCs or to anyone logged in to the GoogleMail Chat web page option.
As you may know iChat can have Jabber/Google IDs or AIM valid ones that include Apple IDs ending in @Mac.com or @me.com
You can not do any chat of Any kind between these two types of Buddy Lists.
Not AIM to Jabber or Jabber to AIM buddies even if they are using iChat.
You have not said if you can Video chat (Or Audio only Chat) with anyone.
Your post implies from my reading of it that you also have a AIM valid Screen Name.
iChat uses the same protocol and the same ports to do Video or Audio Only chats no matter which type of Buddy List is used.
In System Preferences > Security > Firewall tab if the Firewall is to be used with iChat it should be set at Allow All (In fact Off) or Allow Specific Apps and iChat added to the list.
As you can Text chat you appear to be past this stage.
To Video chat iChat uses different ports to those used for Text chatting.
These may need to be opened or allowed in your routing device if you cannot Video chat at all.
The best method in terms of Ease and allowing iChat Screen Sharing is to use UPnP in most routers or Port Mapping Protocol to be Enabled in Airport Base Stations.

  • IChat Video Chats

Just got a brand new Macbook Pro two months ago... My ichat will not let me host conference video chats and is always quitting on me.. Also, it takes forever to sign in and when I try to host even a one on one video chat it quits on me.. Why is this happening to me?!

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
That's not a lot to go on.
I presume we are talking about Snow Leopard and iChat 5 ?
Is the Mac Firewall On in System Preferences > Security > Firewall tab ?
If so have you used the Advanced button and set Allow Signed Apps and added iChat to the list ?
Also have you allowed iChat through your router ? (and any other routing device you have)
If you go to your Home Folder (Little house Icon) and then Library/Logs/CrashReporter are there any Logs from iChat ?
Is this an AIM valid name that you are trying to sign in or a GoogleTalk or Jabber one (Apple names ending in @me.com or @mac.com are AIM valid names and GoogleTalk is a Jabber server) and this may make a difference about what ports you have open.

  • IChat WON'T WORK using audio or video chatting [PLEASE HELP]

Bought a Mac a couple months ago and I'm pretty (yeah, that's VERY) happy about it. The thing is when it comes down to my iChat, I wanted so much to have video conference with my family in Brazil while I'm studying in Spain -- but I Just can't! =(
Let's put it that way: iChat won't recognize my (Googlechat) friends and their webcams; and as long as I'm connected, I have never seen any sort of "audio label" beside their names.
So can any Mac-pro please help me out explaining what the matter is?
Can't I talk to my friends just because the're using PCs -- or there's nothing to do with it?
I've tried everything, from Preferences to Praying; and it won't work. Just wanna let you guys know that all the people that I'm trying to talk to have webcams and microphones plugged-in.
PS - Plus, I got this huge agenda full of contacts (around 2,000) that appear to be on my iChat list, but they're somehow never online. Is that because I have to send them an invitation to join my Googlechat? =/
    I'm totally lost here.
I'd appreciate if you people could answer me quick - as you always do here =). Tomorrow I'll have this unique chance to talk to my grandmother (for she's living in some sort of farm far away from civilized world) and I'd REALLY want to chat via Video Conference with my family tomorrow night.
Sorry for my bad english and thanks in advance.

    Hi,
You can Add an Google Mail ID (@gmail.com or @googlemail.com) as your ID/screen Name in iChat.
From iChat to iChat this will also do Video or Audio Chats as well as Text chats.
From iChat to anyone using the Google Web Mail page you can text chat as the Video and Audio codecs are different.
The same is true of the PC app for GoogleTalk.
To be able to login in to Google Talk using iChat your have to Enter you ID as it is written on any Google Page when you are logged in (Ends with either @gmail.com or @google.com), Mail seems to cope with either but iChat needs it to match.
You also have to Enable the Talk option on your Google Account info.
To See the Green Video and audio icons go to the View Menu of ichat and Select Show Audio and Show Video.
If you are trying to Chat with a PC I would use one of these
Alternatives to iChat but Video chatting In a Web Browser
MeBeam. An option to use a Web site that create Private room for Video Chatting. Uses Flash to access your Camera and Mic.
iVideoChat Similar setup but a somewhat corporate type look to the site. Has Public rooms as well. Again uses Flash.
Googlemail/GoogeTalk now do a Version in a Web Browser
Tokbox A Site that can link your existing Buddy Lists that Uses Flash to Video chat in a Browser.
    From http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/page5.html#_other
Tokbox allows you to link to existing Buddy Lists.
