No video in Logic 8

I've been working on a project in Logic 8 which involves syncing music to video. I converted the video as an mp4 and imported it into Logic and initially it was working fine. However, about halfway into this project and for no apparent reason, the video doesn't seem to play. When i start the sequencer, the video screen remains blank. I've tried re-importing the video into Logic as well as converting the video into a smaller sizes and different formats yet still I can't seem to get any picture. This has happened on both my G5 and my macbook and it's driving me crazy! Can anyone help me please?

It's possible you inadvertently gave the movie an incorrect start point. I can't remember if it's a preference or a song setting, but there is an item called "movie". Here you can change the movie start point. For instance, if the movie has a :10 countdown before the actual video portion you are working on starts, but you want this portion of the movie to start at bar 1, beat one, you are able to set the movie to start :10 into the video thereby eliminating the :10 countdown. You must also check the synchronization start time. I always set mine to start at 01:00:00:00, or exactly 1 hour, zero minutes, zero seconds, zero frames. This is dead on the one hour border. In this example you would set your movie to start 00:59:50:00, or :10 before the 1 hour border. The important thing to know is that you can set your movie to start well after your sequence. Your sync setting could be set to 01:00:00:00 but your movie could be set to 01:01:00:00. In this example, your movie would not start at all, (and probably be blank) for the first minute of the sequence. More extreme settings are possible also. So, make sure your synchronization start time is the same as your movie start time UNLESS you want an offset, like eliminating the video countdown so the program starts at bar 1, beat one. I do this all the time. I hope this helps. I tried not to get too complicated.

  • Working with Multiple Videos in Logic a Pain !!!

    Hi,
I find that working with videos in logic is still quite primitive as compared to Protools. I like working with logic, even in post production but working with videos has been a real pain for me.
In PT, you are able to add in several videos in one arrange page and edit the length of the videos to remove unwanted frames such as the black frames etc. It makes it easy to bounce when you can just click on the video in the arrange and bounce the particular segment in the precise time length of the video.
But in Logic, I have to add all the videos in imovie, then export them out to DVPAL, then adding them in logic. This can take a really long time. Say i have a new revised video for one several compiled videos, i then have to repeat the whole process all over again. After which the starting time location of the video changes and i'll have to move everything in my arrange page. In PT you can just replace the particular video file and nothing else changes.
Bouncing is also difficult in Logic when you can't maintain the starting time of the videos uniform. There are many times when I have to zoom in really find to the start time of video then start dragging the loop region and then do the same to the end. In PT, just click on the video and bounce. Done!
I find working with Videos in Logic for Post Production for Advertising is such a pain. And I don't want to change to Protools cause i still love logic. I really think Apple will have to do something about this to be a competitive Post Production and Engineering platform. As for working with Music Logic is still sweet.
Anyone else using logic as a Engineering Platform feeling the same way?
Is there a better way to work with videos in Logic?
    Cheers,
    Kitcheren

I can't believe there isn't a lot more talk about video in Logic. I have been using LP7 for music-to-picute for years until now that I have switched to 9. The way Logic 9 interacts with video has changed and I find it really hard to find exactly where the frames are in relation to the audio. It seems that the video window only approximately updates as you advance in the timeline by frames. Can anyone confirm that? Isn't anyone doing music for picture in Logic? I'm also kinda hooked on Logic and not in any mood to go back to PT, but today I nearly had a heart attack trying to get some music to match. My exports weren't looking the same as my project etc... I was horrified at the idea of telling my client that I can't figure out how to sync the picture! I wound up sending the mix and movie to a friend to line things up... not pretty.

  • Video in Logic

I've imported a video into Logic. Is there any way to make the video start playing at Bar 2 instead of Bar 1?
    Thanks
    Steven

Yes, just go to project settings, video, and enter in smpte offset the value corresponding to the beginning of your bar 2. Check this value in Logic Transport Bar after having positionned playhead on bar 2.

  • Bad video=Bad logic board in new iMac?

Just had 2 less than fruitful phone call with Apple; my one month old imac has suddenly developed horrible video problems. (pixelated screen, messed up images, missing info/icons from desktop)
Apparently the logic board is bad and needs to be replaced. Our local mac shop is with the university and is closed until January 17, so we are without the computer until then?
We can't send it in, and the other nearest store is 150 miles away.
Tech people said they've been hearing this... but I thought the problem was resolved before this new line came out? Plus no support for a month?
Sorry quite frustrated by the non-options right now. Is anyone else in the same boat or familiar with this situation? Thanks.

I received my isight mid-November and within a couple of hours, my screen started having problems. Required new logic board. Logic board installed by my local Apple store. Haven't had a problem since -- perfectly quiet too!

  • Firewire video and Logic Pro 64bit

Does anyone know if and when firewire support on 64bit will be available? I just read it needs to be implemented in Quicktime 64 bit. When will that be? Quite a pity my firewire convertor is no longer available in Logic. Switching to 32 bit is not an option; I need the gigs of RAM.
    thanks A

Just wanted to bump this thread up. Well is 2011 now, so we are still waiting for a solution for firewire video on 64 bit logic! C'mon Apple- we're waiting waiting waiting....
Apple, you are crippling the power users here - there is a (small) core community of folks buying your ultra high-hardware (for me a 5K 12core MPro) and using your pro apps, like Logic Pro. Until you give us this firewire solution we can't work with picture on external video monitors and take advantage of the extended memory addressing we need so desperately. One without the other is senseless, esp. when quicktime is such a CORE component of the operating system. PLEASE give us a 64 bit quicktime--- PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE - we promise we'll keep buying iphones, ipads, etc. too.
It seems so crazy we've bought a 64 bit computer, a 64 bit operating system, and a 64 bit App., yet an essential core system component of high end audio visual computing work is still not yet supported. Shame on you- the ball has been officially dropped here. I think I'll email Steve Jobs and see if I get a response... ya never know.

  • Exporting Audio to Video In Logic Pro

After I go through the various windows starting from Option/Movie in order to export sound to the movie, when the final window comes up that requests which tracks to export, I am unable to get this to work.
How can I get the audio track into the actual video clip (about 20 seconds of duration)
Are there specific procedures beyond what the manual states?

  • Video corrupts Logic file?

I've been having trouble with files getting corrupted recently. It manifests itself most noticeably in the transport bar, which gets partially replaced by gibberish (mainly the time signature and the CPU bars). It also naturally makes the files much more prone to crashing.
It's seemingly caused by some aspect of working with video. I've tried simply importing a video into a new file and that doesn't do it. But importing a video into a file that already has some MIDI tracks and then going about my normal routine causes corruption pretty quickly.
This doesn't seem to happen all the time, but frequently enough that it's a total pain. Anyone else experiencing this? Anyone have ideas for a solution?
    Thanks.

Well there's at least some of your trouble. You can NOT export a movie clip with code to a video. it won't work, which is probably WHY your movie is blank in the first place. Especially if you're asking that code to place movie clips onto the stage. Forgive me if I missed you explaining this in the beginning.
The way movie export works in Flash is almost like taking a screen capture sequence (although not exactly). But basically, what plays live in real time on the stage is what will export. SO, if you want to export your file as a video you'll have to place those movie clips on the stage yourself, set frame ranges for how long they need to play and then make sure the clips animate on the stage in real time. Personally we use Graphic symbols and NOT movie clips and I don't believe they export well to a video.

  • Anyone recommend a good tutorial for 'working with video' in Logic?

I've worked with video a fair amount, but only ever skimmed the surface and found odd workarounds to get things to happen how I want them.
The manual is scant when it comes to features such as SMPTE locking and beat mapping scenes to bar lengths and all sorts of other tricks I'm probably unaware of.
The only Macprovideo I can find is from 2005 and whilst I'm sure has some common features, is perhaps not up to date enough. And this http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jul07/articles/logictech_0707.htm is ok for a quick overview but I'd like to see some of it in action (or at least have more detailed exercises).
Does anyone know any tutorials they'd recommend? Cheers

  • How do I get a video track in Logic Pro 9?

I'm trying to sync a video I have recorded in Photo Booth with the music I recorded via my mixer into Logic Pro 9.
I have tried dragging the video into Logic and it only gives me options like bring in the audio (also another issue is that the audio has a locked symbol and won't let me drag it to the beginning).
The video does not show up in a track, it does appear at the very far left but if I try to play it, it is just a couple of frames juddering over and over again. I have also tried opening the video in Quicktime and saving as a .m4v instead of a .mov and dragging in to Logic but this did not work either. I have also tried the Open Movie option under the File menu instead of dragging but this doesn't work either.
I can do this easily in Garageband, but I cant save in Logic as a .band file. I have looked for instruction videos on Youtube but those videos start with the video automatically showing in a track. I have looked under Global Tracks but it still does not show. What can I do to get this to work?
    Thanks.

No, you do not need to change it back, "Settings" are not global, they're per project. "Preferences" are Global and affect all projects.
Logic defaults to a "standard" 1 hour SMPTE preset, personally I think it's more confusing since more users are not professional (ie: experienced) so they don't realize why the video isn't showing.
You need to read the manual regarding video, unless you use the manual to it's best advantage you will only end up using a few percent of Logic's features..
    http://help.apple.com/logicpro/mac/9.1.6/en/logicpro/usermanual/
The Mantra is.... Logic is not Garageband, GB is user friendly with far less options, Logic is professional software and expects the user to up their game. (a good thing, imho)

  • Logic Express 7.2 can't find contiguous sync to sync video properly

I'm trying to Sync video in Logic Express, I remember in Logic Pro that there was a contiguous Sync section that you could uncheck on the movie and then the movie would play fine, but now I keep on seeing the movie continually hunting for the correct BPM, speeding up and slowing down..
Can anyone help me to stop the movie from hunting all the time..?
    Thanks

  • Logic Pro 9 Will Not Show Video

When I import a video to Logic, the video does not show up on the video track nor on the top left of the project. Although the movie tab shows up, there's no film. If I double click the video track, it asks me to look for the video (finding it again doesn't work). Now this only seems to happen with mp4 files. Mov files show up, but the screen is white and there's still no video (but there is sound). It also shows up on the video track, but the track is blank.
Note: I've never had any of these problems before, but I recently just did a clean install of Snow Leopard and did a transfer of apps and files from a Yosemite drive, which then the problem occurred. I've tried possible fixes like reinstalling Logic 9 and deleting the preferences file in /Library, but the problem still stands. Is there any possible fix to this problem I'm missing? Could it be a QuickTime problem maybe? I tried videos that worked before this problem but now they don't.

This is most likely the source of your problem.
Best bet would be to reinstall the OS from scratch, without transferring any Apps etc from the other drive

  • Logic slow when working with video

    Hi there
I'm trying to work with video in Logic 8 but it slows down pretty dramatically when I imported the video. Are there any settings I can tweak to get the action to run more smoothly. The playhead jumps very slowly around, it takes the video a few seconds to start to play after pressing play in Logic. The video file I'm using is a Quicktime Mp4, around 288 Mb in size. The details of my system are on the signature below. Any help is much appreciate it.
    Thanks - Gunnar

Don't use mp4, this is most likely the cause of your problem, especially if the video codec of your file is H.264. Mp4 allows you to have better perceived video quality with a lower file size, but the tradeoff is that it makes your computer do a lot of work in real time to decode the video.. Thus the slowdown of logic.
Try converting your video file to QuickTime DV, this is a much more performance-neutral format, your video file will be much bigger but it won't be making any huge demands on your system to play back.
Also, if your movie is too long it can also cause slowdowns in your logic project. When working on feature length films, they are always divided into reels of around 25 minutes each which keeps things manageable. If your film is very long you should divide it up.

  • When workign with video, logic freezes for a few seconds then playbacks

    Dear all,
When i am working with video in logic 9.1, the playback freezes for a few seconds and then plays smoothly. This is irritating as when u score for movies, u cant sync the sounds. I tried converting the mov file into various formats, but still no luck. Strangely, the demos given with logic(the ones with videos) plays smoothly without the freezing.. pls help ...
    thanks

    Ken,
Yes , you were right. i researched on video formats and found, logic will only support uncompressed video formats. Like u said, i opened quicktime and exported my movie to DV coding. It works fine.. I also found out that, to have less CPU load, convert you video to "photo jpeg" coding.. Its smoother !!!1

  • How to do this with Logic?

    Hy!
Any ideas how i can realize this with Logic?:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tE7GHgbmlP0
Are there any (freeware) loop plug ins or something else I could use?

Yea, but what if we want to make our own loops, instead of using what apple is providing?
If you're questioning whether you can make your own music loops in Logic as opposed to just using Apple Loops, then you're totally misunderstanding some of the most basic functioning of Logic. That's like asking whether you car will drive you around the block. Logic is a very complex multi track audio and midi sequencing program. Not only can you make any type of sound or audio or midi sequence and loop it to your heart's delight, you can make multi track sequences, songs, complex orchestral arrangements, movie scores, soundscapes .... shall I go on?
I just got LP8, and I'm just learning it too. Are you really saying that you can't do anything similar to that video with Logic?
Absolutely not!! In fact, SC's post 4th down tells you how to do something similar. Not EXACTY what's in the video, but SIMILAR.
Here's the difference: You can't record a single measure drum beat and then have it automatically loop indefinitely *in real time* while you layer more drum beats onto it, each one being recorded after a single measure and played back without stopping. In Logic, you can record a measure, then tell Logic to loop it, and then create another, loop that one, etc etc. The only difference is you're not doing it in 'real time' without stopping, you're building a sequence of looped sounds manually in the arrange. The OP seems to want to do it live, without the beat stopping. For that you need Ableton or another program with 'real time looping' capabilities. The only reason you'd want to do this would be if you A) want to impress your friends, or B) are trying to create beats in a live situation, like a club or something. If that's what you're after, other programs like Ableton Live are better suited for that.
