No video on capture via panasonic deck - NEW

Hi. I rented a panasonic deck HD1400 to get tapes captured in Final Cut Pro 5.04. When trying to capture I get no video on the Mac Book Pro. I use Easy Set-up DVC-PRO HD1080i50 which correspond to tapes. Also the deck is set to HD1080i. I can control the deck from the mac book pro and see a timeline when playing tapes, but no video and thus I cannot capture.
Help is urgently needed as the deck is rented. Any suggestions?

OK. I found the manual for the panasonic HD1400 deck via Google and reset it to default fabric settings. After that I ran a simple Easy Set-up in Final Cut Pro. Problem solved. Fantastic.

Hi all
Does anyone know if a Panasonic AJ-hd 1400E deck is compatible with final cut pro 5.14. I've just hired a deck but can't get it to playback video. It is allowing me to control it via log and capture, and see timecode, but on capture now, comes back at me with "the operation could not be completed as there is no video".
Have checked the easy set up (actually I've tried them all!) and cables, and firewire ports etc, and have now been here for 5 hours!

YOU need to make sure that you are using the proper EASY SETUP...this will ensure that FCP is set up properly to recognize the deck. DVCPRO HD 720p...then whatever frame rate you shot. 720p24, 720p30, 720p60.
And make DARN sure that you turn on the deck AFTER you connect the firewire to it. Connecting firewire after you power up might blow out the firewire port, as firewire carries power from the computer.

Trouble capturing video from VHS via Analogue to DV converter

I use Final Cut Express 1.0.1 and I've always been able to capture video from VHS via a Director's Cut analogue to DV converter box. Today it keeps freezing on me. I've tried force quit, logged off and back on again and even re-started the computer. I've got plenty of space on my two hard drives (125GB free on main drive and 85.42GB on my scratch disk).
I'm sure I've set the rest up correctly (composite cable from VHS to DV convertor box set to output and connected to input slots on box, and DV box set to capture). The box is correctly connected to the Mac.
I've also logged on using another user's account to see if the same problem occurs, and it does. I believe this means that dumping the my preference file won't help, but please correct me if I'm wrong. Any ideas how to stop this freezing on me would be much appreciated.

Last bit of help from Martin may have some mileage in it as far as excluding hidden problems with the drive you are capturing too.
Have been reading into the requirements for the hard disc and it does make it clear having a separate one like you have is almost a requirement because of the work it does. Would it be worth trying a small capture to your system disc. If it helps that is how I am working at the moment so it doesn't appear to be instant fireworks if you do use this one but give it some thought first...
On the firewire port side of things I have seen some unexplained connection issues on this front which were cured by shutting things down, unplugging and then beginning again. Take it System Profile didn't yield anything?
Now I got back in front of my Mac it appears Quicktime Pro will allow capture from an attached device but appreciate you may not have the Pro bit, iMovie should be as good a test.

Sony J30 SDI Deck, New Mac Pro FireWire 800, Arrgghhhhh!!!!

Anyone else had this problem and got around it?
We have a new MacPro that only has Firewire 800. We usually shoot DigiBeat and capture via a Sony J30 SDI deck using Firewire (before you say it, I know, but its fine for what we need).
We have tried a FireWire 6 pin to 9 pin cable but FCP refuses to recognize the deck. Have tried another cable in case it was that.
We used a standard Firewire 400 cable from the deck to a Ext HD, then a Firewire 800 out of the HD to the Mac. Surprisingly this worked, Once!
Can you get a FireWire 400 for the new Mac Pros?

John's talking about a MacPro tower, not a laptop. FWIW The 17" MBP sports an ExpressCard/34 interface not PCMCIA which is much older and slower technology. PCMCIA wont work in an ExpressCard slot without an adapter
+I think I would obtain a Firewire 800 to 400 (direct) cable (Apple store) and not daisy chain between the computer and the deck. Most Firewire problems can be traced to daisy chaining.+
I think John's first post mentions that he's already tried this ... unfortunately unsuccessfully as that would have been the obvious option.

LR 5.5 - Cannot export/publish to HDD or Flickr from video frame capture - "An internal error has occurred: assertion failed"

Basically as the title states, I cannot publish a set of photos that originated as video frame captures, whether to my hard drive or using a service plugin for Flickr. I have tried multiple publish service plugins for Flickr and everything fails precisely the same way. This only happens when I add photos to the collection that are JPG's derived from video, and it only started doing this recently. I have other frame captures that I uploaded just fine, but it appears that nothing from the set I worked on the other day wants to upload. Other NEF-derived photos from the same set work just fine.
All I get is a Warning dialog stating that an error has occurred while the main dialog stops on "Preparing to export...", then it kicks me back with no action taken when I click OK. The status in the upper left says "Updating Published Collections". If I remove the new frame capture photo, it works fine, but as soon as I add one to the collection, it fails to publish.
I updated from 5.4 to 5.5, tried new publish plugins, completely removed and recreated my local profile, reimported my catalog, all to no avail. Everything worked fine two days ago, then when I went to upload my latest edits yesterday, I started receiving the error and have had no luck fixing it.
I used debugView to capture a log as the error occurred, so I can provide that for a developer or support contact if required.
EDIT: I just tried choosing some different photos in the set, and most appear to work, so it is just some particular images that it does not like. I will try to narrow it down.

I narrowed it down to one photo in particular that it does not like. It's not a deal-breaker, but I am still curious what is going on that is causing that one photo being in a set to break the publish process

Which connection are you using?

Problem with previewing video when capturing

I recently had to reinstall FCP onto my Powerbook and since doing this the following problem has occured:
When I open the log and capture window the program recognises my DV deck and plays the footage fine. However, when I start to capture the footage, the video preview is disabled - it freezes on the 1st frame. The video is capturing fine and when I check the audio preview box I am able to listen to the audio whilst capturing, but I can usually preview the video as well.
In the audio / video settings the 'capture card supports simultaneous play through and capture' boxis checked - and as I say, this was fine before re-installing.
Presumably this is as simple as a preference that has not been altered since I re-installed the program?
If anyone could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.

It is highy likely that quicktime is wacky after the FCP reinstall.
go to /library/receipts and delete any files that say quicktime followed by a number (eg Quicktime652.pkg)
Go to the Quicktime download web site and download the correct version for your OS and FCP version.
Reinstall.
Reboot.
Repair permissions.
Good luck.

Confused! Video I captured rendered blurry. Titles & "outside" video rendered clear

I am very very very new to all this, so please be patient.
I captured video using a DSLR - Canon T1i - which shoots in HD. I imported it to Adobe Premiere CS3 as an .avi. I created some titles in Premiere and also imported some video I received from an outside source.
The video I captured was dark, so I used the enhancement features in premiere (brightness/contrast, color levels, etc.) to lighten it up. I checked "preserve luminosity".
When I put all these things together in Premiere, it was completely clear in my preview screen. When I rendered and then played back it back on my computer, the video I captured on my T1i was completely blurry. Everything else was crystal clear. I checked on google and many people were saying this happens a lot when watching it from your own computer (?) but to upload it to youtube or vimeo and it should be fine. I did that (took hours!) only to find the same thing is happening there.
I want to tell you what settings I had the video project started in, but I am not sure how to go back and find that out. I know I tried to do the HD settings. If you could tell me how to do that, I am perfectly happy to go back and check the settings for the video or whatever else you need to know.

I just experienced the same thing today. I bought a new White MacBook this weekend (I installed all the latest software updates). I published an imovie project to iTunes using the medium setting (Share->iTunes->MEDIUM). I saw the same artifacts that you are seeing. I republished the movie using the LARGE setting and the artifacts were gone. This is my workaround for now.

Ok, so here's the update. After many sleepless nights, finally some good news
I removed my Firewire hub and connected only the capture device to the computer. I then did a capture test to the internal memory on the same tapes I had tried before and it worked beautifully. NO BREAK IN CADENCE (I can hardly believe it). Then, I connected only the external memory drive to the working firewire port on my computer. That also worked.
So David, you were right. I think I was overloading my working firewire entrance with the hub. But, I have been told that my computer will not accept a firewire card. So I have decided to capture loads of footage onto my internal with the capture device connected to my computer and then connect my external hard drive to the computer and import these files from the internal. Even though it's more work, it is all I can manage right now (the project cannot afford a new computer...)

What's the best way to capture an individual frame(s) of a video as a jpg file
I read somewhere that you can do this with Quicktime pro, but have not been able to confirm.
there are other software applications available, such as "video frame capture for mac" for $25.
Would prefer some freeware if possible.

You've posted in the Windows side of these Discussions pages but list a Mac profile.
Open the QuickTime file with the free QuickTime Player.
Position the "playhead" (movie controller) on the frame you want to capture. Right/left arrow keys step one frame at a time.
Command-C (Control-C for Windows) to get a capture. To get a larger sized image use the grow window (lower right corner of the Player window) and drag it down and to the right.
Open an image editing app, size a new document to the dimensions of your capture and "paste". Save as to any format you desire.

Monitoring audio in sync with video when capturing in FCP studio

Is there a way I can monitor audio in sync with video when capturing in FCP Studio? I know you can plug headphones into your tape deck but that sound is not in sync with the video in the capture window due to time delay. I tried plugging the headphones into my Powerbook but could not get any audio coming through these, nor audio through the Mac's inbuilt speakers.

The preview checkbox is ticked and the audio monitor indicates that sound is being picked up (the levels rise and fall) but I still can't hear anything! The audio/video sync on the external monitor is ok, but because there is a time delay between that and the video capture window, I can't use that as a reliable monitor for sound sync. If I could resolve the video sync problem there, then I could monitor the sound through the external monitor.

Video screen Capturing compatible with FCP!!!

I recently captured a lot of footage using Snapz Pro X to create a tutorial for a website. After importing it into FCP, it wants to render everything, all the time, for every small change. These render take hours and hours for the smallest change. What should I do? The Snapz Pro X quicktime files are not FCP compatible. Is there a new program to get high quality video screen captures or a way to convert the files I have now? Any help would be extremely great.

In iShowU I am recording at 1440x1080 30p, and capture area is same as video. Then I am importing the quicktime files into FCP. The sequence settings are Apple ProRes 422 1440x1080 60i. Capture Preset is HDV -Apple ProRes 422. The sequence settings are Frame Size 1440x1080 as well as aspect ratio. Something somewhere is off and its driving me mad. haha

Qosmio G10: analog video signal capturing from Camcorder

I am from Canada and new to this forum. I bought a Qosmio G10 early this year but only had a chance to try to use it to capture and convert my V8 home video tapes recently with no success.
I have tried the Toshiba Tech support with no hope. I have tried the registery patch for VinDVD creator 2, but still it is not seeing my video input stream from the camcorder. I tried both S-Video and Composite inputs with no result. Anybody with similar experience?

It's me again!
So far I've got the analog video stream captured only when using DVD Creator 2. But, I still have two more problems to solve. 1) When I stop recording onto DVD creator, always error message:"WinDVD Creator has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." is displayed, and restarting the program it cannot open the recorded clip saying "either the file is corrupt or a non-compatible file format" while Windows Media player can play it back. I cannot edit the recorded video clip as a result. 2) The second problem is that the video stream from S-Video of analog camcorder is played back OK, but once click the record on DVD creator, the video capturing starts to lag and looses smooth flow.
Any hint or comment is appreciated.
