No video or audio to HDTV

I have the 2007 13-inch white MacBook. I'm trying to connect it to my Sony Bravia HDTV which has two combined HDMI / audio inputs, one HDMI-only input and one audio-only (RCA jacks) input.
I bought an Apple Mini-DVI to DVI adapter, an HDMI-DVI video cable and a stereo cable (mini-plug to RCA plugs) at an Apple store to connect my MacBook to my HDTV. After connecting to the HDMI and audio jacks on either combined inout, I get a blank screen and no audio. Are there any settings I need to adjust on my MacBook? Is there anything else I need to do?
When I plug the audio cable into the audio-only input on my TV, I get sound from the MacBook. When I plug the HDMI-DVI cable into the video-only HDMI input, I get the desktop but no dock, no icons, nothing but the background screen of my desktop.
When I connect to either of my other two HDMI/audio inputs (video and audio on the same input) I get just the totally black screen and no audio.
Thanks for your help.

After connecting to the HDMI and audio jacks on either combined inout, I get a blank screen and no audio.
Generally there will be a setting on the TV to tell it whether to be looking for digital audio on the HDMI port or analog audio on the associated RCA-type audio inputs. But there should be a screen regardless, so I don't know why it's blank.
When I plug the HDMI-DVI cable into the video-only HDMI input, I get the desktop but no dock, no icons, nothing but the background screen of my desktop.
This is normal. It means the Mac is running in extended desktop mode and the TV is acting as an extension to the MB's built-in screen. If you go in Displays Preferences, you should see an Arrangement tab. Under that tab you will see two blue rectangles that are meant to represent the two screens. The smaller one associated with the MB will have a white stripe across the top meant to represent the menu bar. If you drag that white stripe from the smaller rectangle to the larger one, the real menu bar will then move to the TV and the MB will now be an extension to the TV as the main desktop.
An external screen can be run in a multitude of ways. One way would be to have the MacBook's lid closed and only the external screen running. Another way to run is with the lid up. In that case there are still two modes that can be considered. One is called mirror mode. Mirroring means the same thing is displayed on both the MB's built-in screen and the external screen. But the two screens can also be run independently. This is called extended desktop mode, and it sounds like that's the mode your set up is in now. Here are some links to Apple article that explains more about this.

    TIA

Dave, I looked up the official specs for the cable and says it is supposed to work with original iPad. I could not get this cable to work at all after trying for hours before returning it. My iPad couldn't output anything from the Digital video cable. No video or audio. Had it hooked up to a Toshiba HDTV via HDMI. No joy. I wonder if Netflix app outputs to the HDMI because I got signal from both component cable, although it was pretty badly chopped up and get perfect signal from the VGA cable. The Apple video app wasn't working either with the digital video cable. Maybe bad day a far as perhaps I got two bad cables in a row? I don't know. Just know these did not work for me and assumed would not work for any original iPad user.

    Hello All...
Back after a brief absence, things look a little bit different.
I'm trying to take a 16 minute mini dv video and compress it for use on the web. I'm interested in any suggestions you may have on settings for the video and audio tracks. I've tried using Sorenson 3 (15 frames, key frames set to automatic, 320 x 240) for video and IMA 4:1 (mono) for audio. The resulting video looked great but the file size came in at about 255 Mb.
    Thanks!

Thank you for the replies.  Everyone was correct about the jack, interface, and phasing problems.  I have been unplugging my motu audio interface and then using headphones at work.  I have not changed any detailed audio output settings in logic.  When I read that the jack might be a problem I tried switching headphones.  This actually helped.  I am using dre-beats headphones and they seem to be having issues with the mac/jack-(the phasing/panning problems.  I can use these headphones with other devices but not the mac.  I have to use ipod ear buds and the phasing seems fixed.  Hopefully this information is helpful to someone else.
If anyone knows how to correct this issue please let me know its difficult to know what my final mixes are going to sound like and I have had to keep bouncing everything into i-tunes- sync to ipod and then listen in my car radio.

  • Sony DCR-DVD505 Handycam: Unable to get video clips, audio

Evaluating Adobe Premier.  Hopefully helpful for other Sony DCR-DVD505 users.
    Objectives:
    1) Get videos from Sony DCR-DVD505 handycam into Premier Elements
    2) Drag and drop various clips into Sceneline
    3) Insert menu markers
    4) Burn DVD
Stuck in Step 1, getting video from handycam, unable to get video clips (with audio)
    First Try: NO AUDIO.
The Sony DCR-DVD505 burns a mini-DVD (1.4 GB) while recording.  After "finalizing" the disk, the media may be imported into the computer.  Streaming was supported by Windows XP driver but is no longer supported in Windows Vista.   In fact, Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) does not even recognize the camera as a DVD drive!  So downgraded to Vista SP1 and used the Sony Picture Motion Browser to import media into computer as MPG files.  Each MPG file is a clip (corresponding exactly to camera record on-off sequence while shooting).  Then opened up Adobe Premier Elements 8.  Used get media to import all the MPG clips into "Organize".  Dragged and dropped various clips...inserted a menu or two and...burned the DVD.  PROBLEM: VIDEO OK, BUT NO AUDIO(?!).  The MPG files on computer play fine (with audio) inside Windows Media Players.  Read all sorts of nonsense about why Adobe Premier (probably old versions) cannot work with "low-quality/compressed" MPG and needs to be a particular type AVI soo....
    Second Try: Capture VOB directly
Forget the camera.  Insert the mini-DVD directly into computer DVD drive, create a new project and followed directions from  "Lowdown on VOB" http://forums.adobe.com/message/2117743 and "tools to convert to DVI" http://forums.adobe.com/thread/415317.  I loaded the VOB directly and dropped them into  Timeline as advised by the second post (only hitch being the first VOB pertaining to the DVD menu is not recognized and is neither needed).
However, File > Export is always GREYED out (unusable).  And the status at bottom right seems to be looping on "Background Rendering".  DO I WAIT?  In any case, the whole video is showing up as a single continuous stream and what I want are the clips from the camera?!
Then I tried Prism (again as per the second forum post mentioned above).  It simply did something to process 30 minutes of video and crashed in the end without explanation - saying there was an error in conversion.
Is this AVI conversion even a good idea?  How would I get my clips back??
Bottomline.  My mini-DVD and imported MPGs plays fine in Windows Media Player.  However unable to extract the camera clips (with audio).

Dawg, I have the Sony DCR-DVD305, and have been using it successfully for quite a while with PE7, with few issues, once I had a workflow nailed down.
I believe the 505 is basically the same camera, with some additional features.
This workflow worked for me in the past so I'll pass that along:
Sony Browser to PC as Mpeg.
Mpeg to Windows Movie Maker, output to DV-AVI, taking default settings.
    DV-AVI imported into PE7.
This should also work for PE8.
Upon getting Cyberlinks PowerDirector v7, my new workflow changed to this:
I take the min-DVD directly from camcorder to my PC, and capture the disk via Power Director.
PD will convert the VOB's directly to DV-AVI Type 2 on one pass.
    I then load this DV-AVI into PE7.
(PD v7 was pre-installed on my new PC from HP, or it can be purchased from Cyberlink).
    Other options to try:
Copy the VOB's directly from the mini-DVD to your PC and use Prism to convert these to AVI.
Or load the VOB or Mpeg into PE, then use that to convert to AVI.
(Export to DV-AVI with PE8 is done with SHARE/PC, not Export under the File Menu, which is greyed out).
I've had many issues trying to work with Mpeg's and VOB's when loaded directly to PE with limited success.
So if you can get it converted successfully to AVI outside of PE, I've found this to be a better approach.
Post results, if any of this works for you...
Note: One other thing, if you are working directly with VOB's to PE, especially multiple VOB's from a single DVD, you can encounter out-of-sync issues between video and audio. If this occurs, review this link from Muvipix:

You should now be able to chat to each other.
If each of you has a camera it can be full Video , as described in the Glossary at the top.
To start from the Mac end, select (highlight) your Buddy with one click. His camera icon should be dark. Click on the icon near his name or the one at the bottom of the Buddy List. (You do not have to start a text chat).
To start from the PC end you need to start a text chat, then select the Video icon at the bottom of the chat window.
If one of you has a camera and the other has a Mic then you will be able to chat One Way but have sound will be both ways.
To start this type of chat from the Mac end you will have to go to the menu item "Buddies" and drop down to the item "Invite to One Way Video Chat"
To start this from a PC follow the directions in the pargraph above. You may need to change the tab to the incoming Video at the back of the two to see the Video. These tabs are added when the Video chat starts and the front one normally states you do not have a camera and shows a connection to buy one.
It is also possible to chat One Way if the other person does not have a Mic: replies will have to be typed in a Text chat.
No Camera and No Mic will cause iChat to End the chat with "No Data Received for 10 Secs"
    Summary
For any sort of sound to a PC using AIM, (Talk in PC or Audio in iChat) the Mac will need a camera. The other person can have a Mic and then live chats with sound both ways and Pictures (Video) the other.
NOTE: At This Time It Is NOT Possible to Audio (sound only) between Mac & PC with AIM & iChat
Trillian Basic can Audio. Trillian Pro can Video and has a bigger picture and can do Full Screen.

During all five Sundays during last month, January of 2011, the live broadcast feed, during the live broadcast of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's weekly program of "Music and the Spoken Word" from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., Mountain Standard Time--both streaming video and audio--after my signing in to byu.tv's live broadcast site, worked. • New to iMovie, create live video and audio?

Hello, I am trying to create a video of a live musical performance to post on youtube and have figured out how to use the isight to get a video but can I use the biult in mics to record live audio with the video?

    Hello, Nateomite
As Karsten says, you will certainly get better results and much more convenience with a camcorder.
However, if you decide to use your MacBook, the built-in mic can record audio with your video:
in iChat: iChat > Video > Record Chat records both video and audio.
      in iMovie: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iMovie/7.0/en/10172.html
tells you how to record using your MacBook's built-in iSight (and mic.)
Other movie/video recording apps may work differently, but most allow sound with video.

  • DVI to Video Adapter- Audio Compatibile?

Hey I have two questions about the DVI to Video Adapter.
I want to use it to connect my MacBook Pro to a TV in order to watch DVDs. Now my question is does this wire only transfer video, or does it also transfer audio. Will it get the movie on the screen but the audio will still be coming from the computer?
If so, is there a wire i can purchase that will transfer both video and audio through rca component wires, or is there only an hd wire compatibility with this computer?
Thanks. I was in the process of checking out and stopped to think about that. The sooner someone can ansnwer the better. Thanks.

The wire will only carry video. That being said, you can buy a mini-jack-to-RCA cable for about 5 bucks at Walmart, Target, Meijer, Best Buy, etc. Plug that into your MBP's headphone jack and the back of your TV, and you're good to go.
I did this for years with both and iBook and a PowerBook, and would still be doing it, but for finding a DVI-to-HDMI cable on clearance last night. I still do the same thing for Audio though. This is the cable I use for audio.

  • With newer MacBook Air, sending both video and audio to an LG TV works fine, but I want to send the audio to a sound bar attached to the TV.  Any way to do this?

I am trying to get audio to play through the soundbar attached to the TV for great sound.  Works fine with Apple TV, but on the MacBook Air, system preferences will only find the TV speakers.  If I change the settings on the TV to external speakers (the soundbar), then I get no sound at all.  The HDMI connection does what it is supposed to do, providing video and audio, but the audio can only go to the TV.  I don't know if you can go backward and send only video through HDMI and then connect to the soundbar through the mini jack ports on the computer and the soundbar.  Any solutions will be appreciated.

its important to do this in the correct order so the camera will be senced by the Mac and to prevent the Firewire connection from electrical damage:
    power down your Mac
connect firewire from camera to Mac
power on camera and insert tape in camera and play back
    power up Mac
    start QuickTime
File > Preferences > record tab
video source - select the camera you have
sound source - select the camera you have
    quality - select device native
the video should show in the QuicTime window
a  green line below video will show presence of sound-it will play through the speakers if they are selected in system prefernces
    rewind tape and playback
click on red button to start recording

  • Video and audio transmission from MacBook to TV

Since I really get mixed up with various posts about connecting MacBooks to a TV set I would love to get simple answers to the following questions:
How can I connect my MacBook to a TV so that I have video and audio rendering? My MacBook has a mini-DVi output, my TV set has VGA, HDMI, and audio inputs. Since to my knowledge HDI carries no audio signals I suspect that I need an extra audio connection. Is this true?

  • How can i stream video and audio from macbook air to my tv?

how can i stream video and audio from macbook air to my tv?

Wirelessly: you need an AirPlay - enabled device such as an AppleTV.
Wired: if your TV has an HDMI port, you need a Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter such as this one:
Mini DisplayPort to HDMI® Adapter w/ Audio Support
If your TV does not have an HDMI port you will need a converter that will convert HDMI input to whatever input your TV requires.

  • How do i start video and audio at the same time in ios

How do i start video and audio at the same time in ios?
I have tried a lot of different ways but i cant figure it out?
I can get the sound and animation (timeline) to start playing.
There is no problem to start the video and the animation at the same time.
But i cant get both the video and the audio to start playing when i press a button.
It works great in OSX and on windows?
    Here is an example:
// insert code for mouse click here
    // Play an audio track
    sym.$("_1")[0].play();
    // Play a video track
    sym.$("host")[0].play();
// Play the timeline at a label or specific time. For example:
    // sym.play(500); or sym.play("myLabel");
    sym.play("marker1");

If the game has sound in it (and possibly even if it doesn't) it may be overriding the Music app and causing it to stop playing - in which case there is nothing that you can do about it.

  • Apple TV gen 3 video freezes, audio stops

I have two Apple TV gen 3 units in my home, both are running the latest version of the firmware.  I have a collection of movies in iTunes on my PC that are all HD in supported formats both video and audio.  My problem is that almost every time now when I'm watching a movie from the Apple TV, after a while the video will start to skip and get jerky, the audio often stops working completely even if the video is still playing.  Most of the time the remote for the Apple TV also has no effect on the unit, I can hit pause or back and nothing happens.  The unit won't respond and just keeps going.  Normally I have to pull the power cord and let it reboot before I can continue watching the movie.  That usually helps for a while, but almost guaranteed I'll have to do that again at least once or twice more before the movie is over.
This only started happening after the most recent firmware update, and only in the last few months of usage.  It also only happens if I'm playing HD movies out of my home iTunes library.  Netflix and other videos sources like YouTube are not affected and seem to work perfectly fine.  I'm not sure why its only my movie collection causing this issue.  As I said, all of my movies used to play just fine on the same Apple TV, its only recently that these issues have come up.
I even tried swapping out the Apple TV with a second one in my kids play room.  It has the same problems, but one isn't quite as bad as the other.  So I'm wondering if this is something other people have noticed as well, could it be a firmware issue, some kind of glitch in the OS?  Or has something else changed?
I don't think it has anything to do with my home network, its all wired gigabit ethernet (NO WIFI), buffering is fast and works fine, the jerky video and audio issues occur even if the play bar shows there is buffered video ahead.  I really don't understand what the problem is and its driving me nuts.  Any tips, ideas or suggestions?  I was hoping Apple would release a new version of Apple TV soon so I can just replace these with a more powerful unit.  Unfortunately I'm still waiting.  Any suggestions or feedback is appreciated.

Nevermind - the issue was my storage system where the movies resided.  There was a RAID controller issue causing the problem and once I replaced it and re-configured my storage media, everything is working fine now!  There is still a bit of jerky video now and then, but that happens even when the video is fully buffered.

  • Video and audio (in one direction only) deteriorate after about 90 seconds

I begin a two-way video chat as normal, both parties can see and hear clearly. After about one and a half minutes of normal video chat, the person on the other end suddenly starts getting a highly pixelated image of me, and they start to lose chunks of audio from me. Meanwhile I continue to get a very nice clear video and audio from them. We usually end up closing the chat, because they are unable to hear or see me enough to continue.
The first 1.5 minutes or so is always clear, it starts after that. I always receive good audio and sound from the other party throughout the chat. I have never had problems receiving video/audio.
It happens with most (but not all) people I connect to. I am in California, and I always have this trouble when connecting to a relative in Connecticut. I have the problem again with one relative in Sydney Australia, but not with a different relative in Sydney. These are just a few examples by location.
I have repeatedly tested my connection speeds, and I have good up and down speeds - more than the minimum requirements. (My speed today is 8200 kb/s Down, 1309 kb/s up).
    I have also tried:
Checking my Quicktime settings - (set to 1.5 Mbps T1/Intranet/LAN)
Bypassing my Airport modem/router, by connecting directly by ethernet to my Comcast cable modem (which has no router built in)
Replaced the cable modem with a brand new one.
Changed locations - tried it at a friend's house, still had the same problem.
So, I think I have isolated the problem to my PowerBook. This PowerBook used to do iChats really well for at least 18 months. I have been having this issue for about 5 or 6 months now. I have no idea what the problem could be. Any tips would be much appreciated.
    Thanks, Martin
    My setup:
    ISP: Comcast Cable (Cable modem)
    Apple Airport Exteme Base Station
    Powerbook G4 1.67Ghz, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB HD
    O/S: Tiger 10.4.10
    iChat 3.1.8 (with Chax)
    External iSight camera

    With Comcast.
    Try rebooting the Modem.
This seems to refresh the connection in some manner.
Also speak to them. They may not admit any connection management but thing may "magically" get better.
