No video through Sony VX2000 via firewire FCS 2.0.1

Hi,
I've been trying all day to pass video via firewire through a Sony VX2000 mini DV camera to a Sony NTSC monitor using the S-video out of the camera. I've tried multiple settings/different combinations, to no avail. At this point, I can't even get video to playback in preview mode on either computer monitor. I just installed a full version of FCS 2.0.1 a couple days ago. And, while I have your attention, any thoughts about using the AJA Io to pass video in and out of FC?
Thanks in advance,
Jeff

Just to follow up and close this out:
- Kinivo's replacement had the same issue.
- I daisy-chained another active device between the Apple TV and the Kinivo. This device splits the audio out from the HDMI into L/R channels, but it also maintains the EDID signal back to the Apple TV (as the Kinivo should, as well.)
In this configuration, video successfully made it to the TV through the Kinivo. My conclusion is that the Apple TV configuration did change something that affected part of the EDID handshake, which the Kinivo switch could no longer handle.
For you geeks out there, this phrase from an Extron white paper may help:
"Additionally, a display may handle a new input selection by switching only the TMDS or DDC lines from the previous source, but doing nothing with the HPD line. This can be a problem, because some sources wait for the HPD line to change state before sending video. In such cases, switching between inputs on a display can result in no viewable picture until the system is power-cycled."
For your additional reading pleasure, please see the following links:

http://missingremote.com/blog/experience-hdmi-handshake-issues
I'm now searching for a single active device that will handle these ambiguous areas within the HDMI standard. Hopefully it won't cost me a mint.
In the end, Kinivo could not solve the problem, so they refunded my money. The switcher was still within the 1-year warranty.

My new MacBook Pro and Imac can't recognize my digital video cameras (Canon GL2 or Sony) via FireWire 800 9 pin to 4 pin cable. I've tried two different cables.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

Is your DV camera plugged in to AC power (not batteries only)? When you step down from 9 pins to 4 pins, you lose the "power" pins.

  • HDV through SD camera via firewire on FCS2

    HI There,
for anyone who doesn't know but may be interested, i just hooked up my pdx10 sd cam and set a HDV sequence to firewire out to the camera and on to my cruddy tv and it plays the sequence on the telly in what appears to be a normal aspect ratio(black strip top and bottom. pic is a little buzzy but handy to check colour etc. just thought i would let you know as of course you can't do that in fcp5. if anyone knows how to improve the pic, let us know.
On whole package, there are lots and lots of new motion content items, generators etc.
loaded up FCS 2 tonight in OZ and no dramas at all(so far)
    cheers
    Jon

Thanks for the responses . . here are the settings:
    Settings in FCP are:
    Sequence preset: HDV 1080i60
    Capture preset: HDV
    Device Control: HDV FW basic
    Video Playback: MXO HDV 1080i 29.97 - RGB 1440x 1080
    Audio PB: MXO audio
Exported as QT self contained movie (not conversion): Apple Pro Rez 422 HQ 1440x1080
Also did a 720p export with de-interlacing unchecked and it didn't seem to make any difference.
The herringbone effect is about the same both on the computer, a normal monitor and also on a HD monitor.
This video is a car show so most are static shots or slow pans but opens with some folks moving and it is a bit mushy with the motion. Now understand that I need to back off a bit on the 'edge detail' setting on the camera (Canon XH A1) in the future which should help eliminate this herringbone effect.

  • DVD video onto m laptop via firewire? or what?

what do you all suggest would be the best way to get DVD video footage on my laptop? is there an external dvd player that will play in through firewire or is there a fast dvd ripper that'll rip at a 1:1 ratio?
Footage is like 5 min total per dvd
Tried Cinematize but it rips at about 20-30 min per 5 min clip
    Help

Give HandBrake a try - it's free and a darn sight faster:-

Alternatively if you have a D/A converter (either in your camera or standalone) you can get reasonable DV footage.

  • Connecting Sony MiniDV via firewire to macbook with i-movie 08

I have 2 Sony MiniDv recorders, HC19E, 109E & neither will connect using a USB to USB or firewire to firewire. The computer does not even recognize them. Every time i press import from camcorder it brings up me in i-sight (live).
    THIS IS DRIVING ME NUTS!!!
Any help would be much appreciated!

for usage of iMHD, you need a firewire connection (Sony lingo: iLink)
    set camera to Play
in iM, you should now be allowed to select the iSight or camcorder as input device..

  • Import video via firewire not allowed by Face Time

I am trying to import video to my harddrive via firewire. Every time I open iMovie and click on the video camera icon the only device seen is the Face Time camera. There's a little drop down window but it only has Face Time as the option not my Sony DCR VX1000 video camera which is turned on to VCR mode to allow exporting of video content. Is there some way to get my camera recognized by the macbook or at least to disable Fact Time?

You might contact Sony for some technical assistance.  In the past they have not been Mac friendly.

  • Video Importing Problems via Firewire

    Hi there !
Few days ago, i've imported footage from my sony camera via Firewire connection in IMovie 09, It was my 1st time to capture videos in SNOW LEOPARD.
then i've captured videos in IMovie 09 using ISight,
and after capturing videos with ISight, i can't capture videos from any other Video camera via Firewire.
IMovie 09, or Adobe Premiere CS4 don't recognize/see/show Firewire connected Video Cameras, but ONLY ISIGHT !!!!!!!!!!!!! TOTAL NIGHTMARE !
Please guys fix this problem, it's such a shame that Snow Leopard has such an exception error,
are we going to have such strange problems like the WINDOWS VISTA users ??

  • Can't transfer video via firewire

I'm trying to import video onto my desktop via firewire and have tried several cables to no avail. I don't even see the connection on my desktop. Does anyone have any suggestions?

You don't say from what you are trying to import the video, the software, etc. Since this is likely to be a third party device like a video camera it would also make sense to see what the manufacturer's technical assistance has to say.

  • Output via Firewire

I am trying to export my finished video to my camera via firewire so that I can then send it to a VCR via the camera's analog outputs. I used to do this often on my old computer, but can't do it on my new one. I connect a firewire cable from the computer to the camera, but do not then see the video in the camera's LCD screen. This leads me to believe that the signal is not being sent from the computer.
Is there a setting, either within Premiere CS4 or in the computer's Control Panel, which I need to change?
    Thank you.

Settings : Playback>External Device xxxx may help

  • Problem importing video from a DV camera into the new imovie 10.0?  I have a Sony DCR TRV17 connected via Firewire port that worked in 9.0.9 but not under 10.0...

I have a Sony DCR TRV17 that I used to pass through VCR tape video via Firewire port to my Mac Pro under Imovie 9.0.9 without an issue.   Now under Imovie 10.0 the video shows in the import window, I can start recording yet when I stop recording the recorded clips do not show up anywhere.  The movie file I'm creating still indicates that I still need to import video.   Anyone having similar problems?

    Hey Dave,
I had this issue only once before but was lucky enought to find it was a specific event causing the import to freeze. It took me some time to isolate the problem though. I would recommend letting it sit there for some time before you try any troubleshooting. Larger libraries can take long periods of time to update.
This is a good thread for this issue.  I would first try removing the iMovie.plist as elikness mentions.
    1. Open Finder
    2. Click on "Go" in the menu bar.
    3. Click on Go To Folder on the dropdown menu.
    4. Type "~/Library/Preferences/" in the text field and click Go.
    5. Find the com.apple.iMovie(some number).plist file and move it to Trash.
Quit and relaunch iMovie to see if this took care of the issue before attempting the next step. If you're still having an issue then you can try what I needed to do which is isolating the problem event.
    1. Open Finder.
    2. Go to the Movies folder. You should see iMovie Events here.
If you have a larger event library I'd recommend renaming the iMovie Events folder to say, "iMovie Events COPY". Then create a new empty folder named “iMovie Events”. When you launch iMovie 9.0.9 all events will be missing at this point. Quit iMovie if it is open. Then you can either drag each event from iMovie Events COPY to iMovie Events or you can select and drag several at a time. Each time you drag an event folder back into the new iMovie Events folder launch iMovie 9.0.9 to see if you are having the same issue. Wash and repeat until either you have found the problem event or you have imported all events.
If you find the problem event you can reimport the clip from iMovie 9.0.9 by going to File > Import > Movies and navigating to that events iMovie Original Movies folder to find the clip.
    Hope this helps!

  • How do I output Audio through computer speakers while outputting video via Firewire to TV

I'm outputting the video and audio streams via a FireWire connected Camcorder to a TV display (used as a third display), but I want the audio to output through the computer speakers and not through the Camcorder speakers as is happening.  If I disconnect the Camcorder, the audio outputs through the computer speakers normally.  This must be an audio out setting issue but I can't remember which settings to adjust.  I used to do this in an earlier version of PRE but I've forgotten the settings.  I'm using PRE 9.0.  If someone can understand what I'm trying to say, I hope that person can help me.  Thanks.

Good thought.  I was thinking the same way, and I tried  adjusting every
setting that's there but without any luck. It must be  a setting within PRE
that would allow the video output stream to be split from  the audio output
stream but I just can't find the setting.  As I mentioned  in the posting, I
used to do this in an earlier version of PRE.

  • No external video from HDV timeline through Sony HDV deck.

Without buying an external video card, is there a way to view an HDV timeline on an external monitor? I can capture HDV footage easily and see it play back fine in the Canvas on my Mac Pro, but I can't see the captured HDV footage on my external monitor that's hooked up via FireWire to my Sony HVR-M25 deck.
Here are the Audio/Video Settings I'm using:
Sequence Preset is HDV - 1080i60
    Capture Preset is HDV
Device Control Preset os Sony HDV Firewire
I'm also noticing that the Video Playback HDV options are grayed out, so I'm assuming I would either need an external video card to play back the capture HDV footage the timeline on my external monitor, or use another combination of codecs to (maybe) use my stock Mac Pro setup. Whew.
    Thanks in advance.

No. Sorry, but the format doesn't allow it. You can send a downconverted SD signal out via firewire in realtime, but it won't be your full HD image. If you want the full HD image, you need an HD capture device. #25 HDV external Monitor Viewing
Shane's Stock Answer #25 - HDV external Monitor Viewing
To view HDV on an external monitor in high definition you are going to need to purchase a capture card, like the ones Decklink (www.decklink.com) or AJA (www.aja.com) offer. They will both play out HDV in real time. The catch is that you cannot view this on a regular TV or NTSC monitor. Since this is HD, an HD monitor will be needed. HOWEVER, both cards are capable of down converting the signal so that it can be displayed on an SD monitor. This won't be color accurate
The real reason why you can't monitor HDV through a Firewire camera is because Firewire HDV cameras don't decode incoming HDV streams and route them to their outputs like DV cameras do.
Good options for you are the Matrox MXO2 mini...$450...coupled with an HDTV. Or a Matrox MXO (DVI connection) coupled with an Apple 23" display gets you good quality.
And there are the Decklink Intensity and Intensity PRO cards as well, and the AJA I/O Express...
You can, however, view HDV out via firewire as DV...lowering the resolution to that of DV, but still viewable. This is not full quality nor should it be used to judge the quality of your footage or used to color correct to. This is just a way to view the footage on a large monitor.
Here are some examples of some of the possibilities:
    - DV or HDV sequence output to an SDI signal on a third-party interface
    - An uncompressed NTSC or PAL sequence output to a DV FireWire output
    - An HDV sequence output to a DV FireWire output
Sequence and output formats must have compatible frame rates. For example,
sequences with a frame rate of 60, 30, or 24 fps can be output to a 30 fps device,
but not to a 25 or 50 fps device.

  • SONY PVM 14L4 not recognised via firewire

    Hi to all,
I've rented a sony PVM 14L4 monitor for color correction that i'm trying to hook up to my dual G4 via firewire. FCP 5 doesn't seem to recognise it. I don't have the manual and am wondering if it is possible to hook it up directly through one of the computer's firewire ports...
    Anyone familiar with this?
    Thanks for your help...
    Tee.

You can not hook up the monitor directly unless there is some sort of firewire board added in. If there is not one, you need a Digital Video/Analog converter between the computer and the monitor. This can be a DV camera, a DV VTR or a dedicated device such as the Canopus ADVC-300.
It works like this: firewire out to the DV/A converter then composite or S-VHS to the monitor. There is a section about how to do this in your manuals.
    good luck.

  • Video 8, Import via Firewire or TBC to DV Deck

I'm working through a project that involves quite a few Video 8 and Hi8 material.
The Sony deck I have can output this video via Firewire, using a DV preset.
My question is, will that workflow produce the best results?
As opposed to outputting analog video, through a time base corrector to a DV deck and then importing it?
Or for example importing it as uncompressed SD (via capture card)?
Or is there yet another method that would produce better results?
I release that Video 8 and Hi8 is not the highest quality material. But I just wanted to make sure I get the best results I can.

I was going to get a time base corrector, as I've already had issues duping the Video 8 to DV through the analog video connection. I've had video and audio drop out, but it doesn't through the Firewire connection. I'm getting the TBC so I can have a DV backup to the original analog source. I plan on comparing the import over the direct analog to Firewire import to the DV import after TBC conversion. Just to see if there is any difference.
But I still wonder what is the best format to import this old Video 8 material. Is DV the best? I'm assuming that the old consumer Video 8 is a step above VHS at best, so maybe the DV setting is fine.
