No virtual copy, no stack, and no edit.  Whats left?

purchased lightroom 2.0, clean install everthing going well until I came to edit raw photos in photoshop! The raw opens in photoshop, I can make my corrections, but when I close the file and return to lightroom, lightroom will accept the new psd file. It states that it cannont read the file and that it is in a incompatible format??? go figure! using photoshop cs3. If I try to use the virtual copy function, I get an internal error in a null timestamp. Using xp pro 32 bit. photoshop all current along with xp pro.
On an newer system I have with all the same programs however, depending on which drive the images and catalog are on it will bring the image back in from photoshop after edit (only if catalog and image are on c drive) but will not stack! States that the files are located in 2 different folders, but the sit next to each other in the same folder????
However on an older laptop, I don't have any of these issues. it all works fine, return import from photoshop, virtual copy, and stack, except that the laptop is to slow to actually use for production
Following threads, this seams to be a common bug, but thought my experience may help others experiencing similar issues

For about 2 weeks I had this problem and today I fixed it!
Didn't fancy doing a Reset of Firefox as I'd only just done one a few months ago, manually.
Basically, I uninstalled ZoneAlarm. I've been a ZoneAlarm fan for years but the software just got worse and worse and for about a year this weird thing pops up while I'm in Firefox by pressing CTRL Enter or something, it's like ZoneAlarm has put some kind of layer between me and the browser.
Anyway, uninstalled it, it rebooted and did a scandisk which did find and fix a few errors too, so could also be that.
But I'm happy without ZA now as I've found a better one called Online Armour... non of that sneaky trying to install toolbars in your browser rubbish of ZA.
Hope this helps!
I can't tell you how good it feels to have copy & paste fully working again!

  • Duplicates in Stacks and other Editing in the Finder

I am a new Aperture 2 user and I am loving it so far!
What I am wondering is if there is a way to make duplicates in a stack show up in the finder? I have noticed that the only files in the finder are masters... is there a way to show the duplicates at least?
At the very least - I would like to be able to use some events as a screensaver or desktop. In sys prefrences, the album shows up, and all the edited photos appear as they should, but still - the duplicates are not there.
Do I need to un-stack the photo's to accomplish this?
    Thanks =]

    Two things:
1- You can't show edited versions in the Finder because they don't exist outside of Aperture (unless you've created a TIFF file by using Dodge and burn or another plugin or editor). This is why it's a non-destructive editor: your adjustments are just sets of instructions saved in an xml file and applied on the fly by Aperture when you view the picture. The only thing you can see in the Finder are your masters. If you want to use edited versions you first need to export them.
2- The iLife browser only shows files for which Aperture has created a preview. Make sure the files you want to use as screensaver or desktop pic contain a preview (try dragging it to your desktop: if the preview is there you'll see a green + sign appear signifying it'll be copied. If no sign appears, you don't have a preview). You can set Preview generation in Aperture's preferences or generate them manually.
But I'm struggling with your definition of duplicates: what exactly do you mean by that? If you're talking about different versions of the same file (with varying settings), then they're called versions. In fact the entire Aperture workflow is based on versions, stacks and picks. Duplicates would be the exact same picture, without any changes.
Not trying to be snotty here btw, just want to make sure I'm understanding you correctly!

  • Copying from PDF and I get what?

Copying from Adobe PDF "Deviation No.2 - Gas well oxygen" This is what I get:
    uo8,{xo
    lle^{ su,; - Z'oN
    uollB!Ar(l
Does anybody have an Idea what is happening?
Opened file with Adobe Acrobat Pro 9
    Thanks

Yeah, that's the object code from the PDF. But without really knowing what you selected using what method and what document you downloaded, we can't realyl advise. This is more an Acrobat issue, anyway, and may indicate that the PDF has been created with a newer version and there is incompatible data or it is protected or something like that.

  • LR 5 fails to export virtual copy to file

I edited several files in Photoshop CC and upon completion were added to my LR5 catalog as expected. I created a virtual copy of each and changed the crop (only). LR5 stalls and fails to complete when trying to export these files (I wanted a PSD) to a folder. I tried writing the metadata to the file and got the same result. I can export to a new catalog (which is what I ended up doing) but just really needed a file.
This proces worked fine in LR4.4/CS6 (I double checked on a different computer this AM)
The LR5 catalog is an upgrade to my LR4 catalog, hopefully it has the same settings.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

I get exactly the same error message as Zac in the original post. Just like him I also have optimized and tested integrity of my 200 000-images-catalog in LR 4.4 where it is running fine. Have tried to convert my catalog on two different machines running on Win 7 and Win 8.
Export to catalog don't either do the trick. I do manage to perform a partial catalog export of my images from the last year and upgrade this to LR 5 as John suggests, but I'm not really keen on searching for a single possibly troublesome folder, wherever that now may be...
It looks like some others have similar problems:

  • Editing Film Photos and Virtual Copy Problem

I just scanned some film in and then imported it to lightroom. I am now running into a problem when I go to retouch/edit the film in photoshop. When I scan the film in it scans in as a .tiff file. I first tried to edit just the original to see if it would save back into lightroom as .psd but it didnt it saved the original tiff. I want to have two copies, the original and the edited file. So second I tried to make a virtual copy and edit that one and save it but again it saved both the virtual copy and the original file with the edits that I made. I finally tried right clicking the original file and editing with edit a copy. This finally worked I was able to have a copy and the original file unedited.
My question is if I edit this way and have a bunch of edit with copies is my picture sizes going to double? (having two copies of each photo, one edited and one original)
Or is there a way to edit a .tiff as a virtual copy and not have it save the changes to both files.
    hope this wasn't super confusing

    Thanks Sean..
Actually it did work but on the flickr side, i didn't notice until i logged on..  The Flickr side added a '2' to the virtual copy although Lightroom uses the original name/copy.  So i guess it works, just a little confusing.  I have not tweaked the virtual copy yet to see if it updates the '2' copy on Flickr or throws a wobbly instead
I used Jeffrey's plugin for sometime but eventually I decided to delete all my photos from flickr (new account anyway) and decided to go fresh with LR 3.  It works really well and any tweak i make get's republished without deleting any previous comments or data.  Jeffrey's just doesn't have that same visual impact and integration.  The LR version has a few quirks but seems stable enough for solid use...  Just need to be smart with it because pilot error can make problems.

  • Couldn't delete Local Adjustments (Dodge, Burn) from Virtual Copy/Photoshop Edit

Setup: Lightroom 2.3 on Mac with latest OSX
    1. I applied some settings to an image in LR, along with some local adjustments using the LR Adjustment tools.
    2. I made a virtual copy of that image to apply some further adjustments, and I wanted to remove the local adjustments from this copy, so I deleted the adjustment points from this virtual copy. I also clicked "reset" on the Local Adjustments panel.
    3. I do a Command+E to open up the virtual copy image in Photoshop for further edits. Problem: in photoshop the effects of the local adjustment tool are still displaying. There are dodge and burn marks in the image per the local adjustments I made in the master image, but removed from the virtual copy.
    4. I rechecked the virtual copy and could see no sign of the local adjustments still in the file.
To resolve this, I had to return to the master copy, delete the local adjustments in the master copy, and create a new virtual copy.
Is this normal... I should be able to remove a local adjustment in my virtual copy and let the master copy keep its adjustments, no?

No. You cannot be taken seriously.
    1. Photoshop is not Illustrator / Fireworks / Premiere / After effects / Dreamweaver / InDesign. Thank god Adobe. It is already bloated enough.
    2. Much worse: your improvement list is sometimes faulty.
    These are randomly selected examples:

When you are duplicating and coping layers the layer panel becomes a horrible mess with dozens on layers with names like "Layer 123 copy 14" and it's very hard to sort it all out. Maybe it's better to copy layer with the same name as it's original?
    Rename your layer. See screenshot.

False. Press first Alt and move the layer a little bit upwards until you see the light line.

Only 1 layermask + 1 vectormask maximum per layer. Try it.

  • Naming Presets for Virtual Copies and PS Edits

I'm new to Lightroom 4.1 and have been setting everything up... I'm having trouble with figuring out an efficient, clear naming system  to distnguish  Virtual Copies and Copies Edited in Photoshop. I tried using the "File Template Editor in the external Editing window... but I find it VERY confusing. Can anyone recommend a system and the way to enter it as a Preset in the File Template Editor.
My Image File Naming is as follows:   KOBRIEN_YY_00001.dng
Thanks in advance for all suggestions!

Best to set the Rename Template from within the 'External Editing' panel of Lr Preferences. The format should be along the lines shown in screenshot. You add the custom text after the template has been saved.
Above should work OK for photos edited in Photoshop, but Virtual Copies are a different beast and can't be renamed using templates. If you do try it the master is renamed, not the copy. The thing is, VCs must have the same base name as the master. However, you can manually edit the Copy Name field in Library Metadata panel.

  • Flickr and Virtual Copy Problem..

I have photos uploaded to flickr through lightroom but if i create a virtual copy of a used image flickr gets confused because the filename remains the same and wants to update my image with an edit i prefer to keep separate.
Without creating a tiff or jpg of the original RAW file is there a way to avoid this?
Would love to be able to rename virtual copies but it's not possible right?
    any solutions?

I am having an issue with both Pages and Numbers on my iPad. Whenever I am at the document list page and use "edit" to make a copy of a document or delete it, the iPad locks up. Happens almost every time. Also happens on my iPhone but only once in a while. Thought of completely redoing the iPad, but if it happens on the phone as well, won't help. ???

  • Is it possible to save the adjusted virtual copy image and discard the original?

I have made a virtual copy of an image which I then adjusted in LR to the way I want to keep it. Now I am wondering either if there is a way to apply those adjustments easily to the original so I can then discard the virtual copy, or should I save the virtual copy and delete the original? I just don't need two images, one which is not a keeper. I also don't want to delete the original if the virtual copy depends upon its existence.
I want to keep images down to the one's I want and am working to delete those images which I will never use. Whichever is the best way to handle the above situation will enable me to do some much needed housekeeping to my catalog.
    TIA,
    Ken

You guys are pretty slick, no two ways about it. I think I'm learning Lightroom, but I'm just happy with it helping in my own situation. Some of you have far-reaching understanding of this wonderful program. Lightroom is a 'must' as I see it.
Ian, I've tried your method, as it seems easiest and most direct, I selected the VC and chose the menu item 'make copy original' and it did a 'conversion' or so it looked like, but the images still say 1 of 2 for the original with no modifications and 2 of 2 for the cropped and adjusted version. I am skeerd to delete the '1 of 2' version which I believe 'was' the original version before I chose the menu item. Now I'm not sure what I have.
Hal P Anderson, I tried your method and it did transfer the settings but not the crop, which I can understand why. I re-cropped the 1 of 2 to match the 2 of 2 version which is the virtual copy, and then selected the virtual copy and hit delete - the dialog box confirmed I was deleting the VC by asking if I wanted to delete this virtual copy. I felt more comfortable with that arrangement and now I'm sans VC with the original possessing the new settings.
    Thanks to you both,
    Ken

  • My father-in-law passed recently, leaving behind an unopened copy of CS 5.5 Master Collection Student and Teacher Edition for Macs.  How can I find out if he registered this software without opening it?

    Hello forum,
Hopefully a simple question.  My father-in-law passed recently, leaving behind an unopened copy of CS 5.5 Master Collection Student and Teacher Edition for Macs.  How can I find out if he registered this software without opening it?  After finding out how much this software runs, I'd like to sell or return it if possible to give the money to my mother-in-law for funeral costs.
    Thank you,
    Bichonfreeze

    Mylenium,
    Thanks for the quick response!
Thats a shame that it can't be used. Are you sure I couldn't donate the software to a university or school?  It just seems like a big waste for something so expensive.

  • Why jave export and import need to be performed after sys copy Dual stack

    Dear All,
i have a question why do we have to perform JAVA export in the source and import in the target system
after system copy ( dual stack ). when whole database is copied. Thank you in advance.

    Hi,
The reason for this is: because most of the Java configuration lies in the file system and not in the database. This is the reason you need to export Java and then import in system copy.
    Thanks

  • How do I import collections and previous editing into a new copy of Lightroom 5?

I've recently installed Lightroom 5 on a new computer.  I chose not to install my old Lightroom 3.6 on the new computer, but imported the catalog and photo folders from external drives into Lightroom.  My collections and editing did not appear to have been imported along with the catalog and photos.  What to do??

In LR5, File->Open Catalog and then point to the location of your LR 3.6 catalog

  • Improve Auto-Stack and Process Collections with user settings

I have read through all of the Bridge request discussions, and encountered a few comments on the stacking process but nothing to explain my critique and feature request. My apologies for any redundancy.
Bridge CS4 includes two features that would (virtually) streamline my entire photo-organization workflow. Brilliant! Except that they offer zero configuration and my default scenario is very different from Adobe's, so these two would-be-wonderful features are pretty much useless to me, and to anybody else who doesn't happen to shoot in the way the presets are configured.
The first feature is to automatically group images into stacks, based on their similarity, exposure settings, and timestamps. Unfortunately Bridge considers no minimum or maximum amount of photos per stack, and has a fixed timestamp window of 18 seconds. I shoot everything in three-exposure bursts and sometimes multiple shots in less than 18 seconds, so being able to say "process collections in 3-item stacks only" would be absolutely perfect. For other people, being able to limit the timestamp range or other min/max exposure options would work great.
The second feature, which could save me hours every week but is equally useless, is to automatically process collections in Photoshop. My biggest ire about this function is that it completely ignores stacks that I have manually created AND stacks that were previously created using the auto-stack feature. Every time this function is run, it re-runs the auto-stack process from scratch and then delivers the collections to Photoshop. Not only is this made useless by the previously mentioned inflexibility of the auto-stack process, but even if auto-stack worked perfectly, this would waste time by doing the entire thing again and denying the user the option to review the stacks before committing to the Photoshop processing. The process collections feature would also be much improved if the option were given to process ONLY panoramas or HDR photos, or auto-detect. I have never shot a panorama in my life and I'm sure plenty of people have never shot HDR, but Photoshop isn't capable of knowing our intentions and there's no reason why we shouldn't be able to instruct it.

Agree. It is an interesting capability that falls short of being really useful. I feel like an ingrate to complain, but ...
I'd also like to see the capability to specify something than "Auto" for the panorama option. My experience is that most of my panos work best with "Cylindrical + Geometric Correction".
My experience is that once you get past 5+ images in a pano, it becomes very tedious ... and then 20+ images in rows is painful. Unlike a single image that you can quickly evaluate, with panos I find I need to make the pano to tell if it going to turn out.  I have been generating smaller 1800x1200 or 1200x1800 files to speed up the evaluation process, but it is still very manual and tedious.
The Auto-Stack generates a AutoCollectionCache.xml, but I haven't found it workable to edit this. I'd like to be able to modify it to "force" my knowledge of what is in a group. It seems to check the time-stamp, and re-do the Auto-Stack, thus ignoring my changes. Sigh.
