No volume on video files

I just got a 30gb ipod video and wanted to put some videos on there. I didnt have the right format so i converted them using itunes but when i play them on my ipod i cant hear anything. Can someone please tell me why?

If the videos you put on your ipod were not downloaded from the itunes store. They are more than likely in an mpeg-1muxed or mpeg-2 muxed format. This format is used to conserve space. It embeds the audio inside the video track and whjen you use itunes to convert to ipod format, quicktime does not see the audio track.
Here is a link to a knowledge base article on the apple website about this format.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302588
You'll need to use some other third-party software to do the conversion. There's a handful of software available. Just search the forums and you'll find many titles mentioned.

  • Permanently changing volume for video files to iPod

I've got a bunch of old-time musical shorts from the 30's which I've saved in .mp4 format so I can also view them on my iPod. However, many of these files are of low volume, and all of them vary greatly from each other. This is getting a bit annoying.
Is there some way of permanently changing, and standardizing the volume of these files before I transfer them to my iPod?
    Thanks,
    Jim

There is no way to change them automatically, but you can change the volume level for each video manually.
Select the video in iTunes and open the "Get Info" window (command + I or file -> Get Info). Select the options tab and use the volume adjustment slider to correct the volume. Then tap the "OK" button.
This is a trial and error procedure, but if you have enough patience, you'll get things more to your liking.

  • Higher volume for video playback?

    Hello everyone!
I am new to the boards and to the touchpad.  I have a question about adjusting the volume in video playback.  I woudl like to know while during the conversion process, are there any converters out there that can boost the volume?  I have been playing with Movavi, AVS, and Cucusoft.  I am converting an AVI to MPEG-4 or Ipad format, whichever is on the menu.  When I transfer the converted file, the video looks great and the audio plays back.  However, the volume to me is not high enough.  I have also used my headphones and it still does not play as loud as my iphone 4 and they are basically the same file and format.  I bought this because of the price and I am going on vacation later this year and I want to use it on the plane so that is why I am having the volume issue.  To me it seems it wont be loud enough on the plane.   Is there anything I am missing?  I have also tried to upgrade to the latest OS version but the TP is always coming back with the unable to connect message.  I am still working on that.  I cant get the web doctor to work but that is another thread.
    Thanks very much

Ok, I think I have mastered how to convert my movies to play on the TP with no issues.  However, I need to somehow increase the volume level of the converted movie.  I have already installed the preware option that increases the internal volume levels, but some of the movies I have converted seem a little low for my taste.  I have been trying trial versions of several video converters such as DVD fab, Xilisoft, Cucusoft and others but I like Handbrake's track record and it's free!
What I would like to know is if there is a volume setting in Handbrake?  If not does anyone know a way to increase the volume levels when you convert movies any other way?
    Thanks very much.

  • Quicktime Update No Longer Plays Any of My MP4 or M4V Video Files!?

Hi there everyone. I am absolutely desperate to find a solution to my problem now, so I was hoping someone on here might be able to help me out. I have a G4 that I use as a media center via frontrow to play my huge collection of MP4 and M4V video files that are local and streamed from the library on my main intel mac. This has been working fine for some time and I haven't had any problems playing files.
However, when iTunes 9 came out, I ran software update and updated iTunes and Quicktime to 7.6.4, as well as updating the OS to 10.5.8. As soon as I did this, all the MP4 and M4V files that had worked fine up until that point stopped being playable by frontrow/itunes/quicktime. A lot of these are movies that I bought from the iTunes store, and it will not even play those now. It is definitely not a video format problem. When I try to play them in quicktime, I get the error "file is not a video file". This applies to all old files, plus new ones I have attempted to add. Also, frontrow WILL play video files streamed from my main computer, but not local ones (same files). I did the exact same updates on my main mac, and all the files will play perfectly fine on that machine, it is only this one that won't play.
I have tried everything I can think of, I have reinstalled both apps several times. I have also checked the System/Library/Quicktime components and they are all intact, exactly the same as on my other machine. Now it looks as though my only option is to start again from scratch and reinstall the operating system - a time consuming option as I do not back up this secondary machine..
Does anyone have any suggestions of what I can do to fix the Quicktime installation? Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thank you

Ok well if you want to go about it down and dirty you can try this. Take a file that does copy over correctly, for my purposes I had a Rocky and Bullwinkle episode that if I changed the file extension to .m4v it would add correctly through iTunes. From Terminal search /Volumes/youripodname/iPod_Control/Music/ for any file with the m4v extension and take note of them. Now add the "supported" file through iTunes then after it finishes do another search from Terminal and see which file with an m4v extension wasn't there before. Now from Terminal copy the "unsupported" file over to the same location with the same name. Here's what mine looked like cp /Volumes/harddrivename/Video/MUTEMATH.mp4 /Volumes/youripodname/iPod_Control/Music/F12/SJXB.m4v Now in iTunes change the Info for that file with the "Get Info" menu and your set. Mine now plays a video file that it wouldn't let me add through iTunes after the 9.0 update.
I'm sure there's a better way and when I figure out a quick script to do this by directly modifying the itunes database I'll try and repost a solution.

  • How to move huge HD video files between external hard drives and defrag ext drive?

I have huge high definition video files on a 2TB external hard drive (and its clone).  The external hard drive is maxed out.  I would like to move many of the video files to a new 3TB external hard drive (G-drive, and a clone) and leave a sub-group of video files (1+ TB) on the original external hard drive (and its clone).
I am copying files from original external drive ("ext drive A") to new external drive ("ext drive B") via Carbon Copy Cloner (selecting iMovie event by event that I want to transfer). Just a note: I do not know how to partition or make bootable drives, I see suggestions with these steps in them.
    My questions:
1.)  I assume this transfer of files will create extreme fragmentation on drive A.  Should I reformat/re-initialize ext drive A after moving the files I want?  If so, how best to do this?  Do I use "Erase" within Disk Utilities?  Do I need to do anything else before transfering files back onto ext drive A from its clone?
2.) Do I also need to defrag if I reformat ext drive A? Do I defrag instead of or in addition to reformating?  If so, how to do this? I've read on these forums so many warnings and heard too many stories of this going awry.  Which 3rd party software to use?
Thank you in advance for any suggestions, tips, advice.  This whole process makes me SO nervous.

Here is a very good writeup on de-fragging in the OS environment that I borrowed
    From Klaus1:
    Defragmentation in OS X:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1375  which states:
You probably won't need to optimize at all if you use Mac OS X. Here's why:
Hard disk capacity is generally much greater now than a few years ago. With more free space available, the file system doesn't need to fill up every "nook and cranny." Mac OS Extended formatting (HFS Plus) avoids reusing space from deleted files as much as possible, to avoid prematurely filling small areas of recently-freed space.
Mac OS X 10.2 and later includes delayed allocation for Mac OS X Extended-formatted volumes. This allows a number of small allocations to be combined into a single large allocation in one area of the disk.
Fragmentation was often caused by continually appending data to existing files, especially with resource forks. With faster hard drives and better caching, as well as the new application packaging format, many applications simply rewrite the entire file each time. Mac OS X 10.3 onwards can also automatically defragment such slow-growing files. This process is sometimes known as "Hot-File-Adaptive-Clustering."
Aggressive read-ahead and write-behind caching means that minor fragmentation has less effect on perceived system performance.
Whilst 'defragging' OS X is rarely necessary, Rod Hagen has produced this excellent analysis of the situation which is worth reading:
Most users, as long as they leave plenty of free space available , and don't work regularly in situations where very large files are written and rewritten, are unlikely to notice the effects of fragmentation on either their files or on the drives free space much.
As the drive fills the situations becomes progressively more significant, however.
Some people will tell you that "OSX defrags your files anyway". This is only partly true. It defrags files that are less than 20 MB in size. It doesn't defrag larger files and it doesn't defrag the free space on the drive. In fact the method it uses to defrag the smaller files actually increases the extent of free space fragmentation. Eventually, in fact, once the largest free space fragments are down to less than 20 MB (not uncommon on a drive that has , say only 10% free space left) it begins to give up trying to defrag altogether. Despite this, the system copes very well without defragging as long as you have plenty of room.
Again, this doesn't matter much when the drive is half empty or better, but it does when it gets fullish, and it does especially when it gets fullish if you are regularly dealing with large files , like video or serious audio stuff.
If you look through this discussion board you will see quite a few complaints from people who find that their drive gets "slow". Often you will see that say that "still have 10 or 20 gigs free" or the like. On modern large drives by this stage they are usually in fact down to the point where the internal defragmentation routines can no longer operate , where their drives are working like navvies to keep up with finding space for any larger files, together with room for "scratch files", virtual memory, directories etc etc etc. Such users are operating in a zone where they put a lot more stress on their drives as a result, often start complaining of increased "heat", etc etc. Most obviously, though, the computer slows down to a speed not much better than that of molasses. Eventually the directories and other related files may collapse altogether and they find themselves with a next to unrecoverable disk problems.
By this time, of course, defragging itself has already become just about impossible. The amount of work required to shift the data into contiguous blocks is immense, puts additional stress on the drive, takes forever, etc etc. The extent of fragmentation of free space at this stage can be simply staggering, and any large files you subsequently write are likely to be divided into many , many tens of thousands of fragments scattered across the drive. Not only this, but things like the "extents files", which record where all the bits are located, will begin to grow astronomically as a result, putting even more pressure on your already stressed drive, and increasing the risk of major failures.
Ultimately this adds up to a situation where you can identify maybe three "phases" of mac life when it comes to the need for defragmentation.
In the "first phase" (with your drive less than half full), it doesn't matter much at all - probably not enough to even make it worth doing.
In the "second phase" (between , say 50% free space and 20% free space remaining) it becomes progressively more useful, but , depending on the use you put your computer to you won't see much difference at the higher levels of free space unless you are serious video buff who needs to keep their drives operating as efficiently and fast as possible - chances are they will be using fast external drives over FW800 or eSata to compliment their internal HD anyway.
At the lower end though (when boot drives get down around the 20% mark on , say, a 250 or 500 Gig drive) I certainly begin to see an impact on performance and stability when working with large image files, mapping software, and the like, especially those which rely on the use of their own "scratch" files, and especially in situations where I am using multiple applications simultaneously, if I haven't defragmented the drive for a while. For me, defragmenting (I use iDefrag too - it is the only third party app I trust for this after seeing people with problems using TechToolPro and Drive Genius for such things) gives a substantial performance boost in this sort of situation and improves operational stability. I usually try to get in first these days and defrag more regularly (about once a month) when the drive is down to 30% free space or lower.
Between 20% and 10% free space is a bit of a "doubtful region". Most people will still be able to defrag successfully in this sort of area, though the time taken and the risks associated increase as the free space declines. My own advice to people in this sort of area is that they start choosing their new , bigger HD, because they obviously are going to need one very soon, and try to "clear the decks" so that they maintain that 20% free buffer until they do. Defragging regularly (perhaps even once a fortnight) will actually benefit them substantially during this "phase", but maybe doing so will lull them into a false sense of security and keep them from seriously recognising that they need to be moving to a bigger HD!
Once they are down to that last ten per cent of free space, though, they are treading on glass. Free space fragmentation at least will already be a serious issue on their computers but if they try to defrag with a utility without first making substantially more space available then they may find it runs into problems or is so slow that they give up half way through and do the damage themselves, especially if they are using one of the less "forgiving" utilities!
In this case I think the best way to proceed is to clone the internal drive to a larger external with SuperDuper, replace the internal drive with a larger one and then clone back to it. No-one down to the last ten percent of their drive really has enough room to move. Defragging it will certainly speed it up, and may even save them from major problems briefly, but we all know that before too long they are going to be in the same situation again. Better to deal with the matter properly and replace the drive with something more akin to their real needs once this point is reached. Heck, big HDs are as cheap as chips these days! It is mad to struggle on with sluggish performance, instability, and the possible risk of losing the lot, in such a situation.

Uploading Large video  Files to SharePoint 2010  for employee training portal
    Saidireddy

    Hello ,
    The default maximum file size for SharePoint Lib is 50 MB. You can change the maximum file upload size in SharePoint 2010 .However;
a large volume of very large files can affect farm performance.
Ref to change maximum file upload size
    http://aryannava.com/2011/05/30/how-to-change-the-maximum-file-upload-size-in-sharepoint-2010/
I would suggest you that instead of uploading large files to SharePoint, you can Upload those files to File server or
media steaming server and Share those links to SharePoint server.
You can embed those links to SharePoint Silver Media player in .mp4 or .wmv formats.

I have a DVD folder (VOB files) that was rip for me form my VSH.  The DVD play correctly though it has the minus icon on the folder and appears to be empty and I can't get permission to retrieve my home videos files .

You're not dealing with your typical DVD-Video data structure with a SONATA_VOLUME.  This type of data structure is designed to prevent someone from extracting the data and it's very effective at doing so.  You've probably already found that the applications that allow you to copy, extract and convert the standard DVD-Video data structure (a "VIDEO_TS" volume) will not work with a SONATA_VOLUME (apps like Toast, MactheRipper and Handbrake).
While making a digital copy is pretty much not an option with a SONATA_VOLUME, capturing the video and sound via an analog to digital capture usually works just fine.  Of course, that's not nearly as simple as popping the disc into your computer and a drag and drop or just clicking "convert" or "extract" and waiting for the copy or conversion to finish.
Do you have any video hardware for capturing analog video?  A MiniDV camcorder will do the trick if your Mac has a FireWire port.  You'll also need video capture software.  I'd recommend a version of iMovie that supports DV-NTSC, Final Cut Express or Final Cut Pro.
My Sony DVD recorder creates SONATA_VOLUMES while my Panasonic DVD recorder creates VIDEO_TS folders.  The Sony is unplugged and sitting in the corner.

  • What is the best way to edit/sync two video files?

Has anyone had experience with editing 2 movies files?  I have recently taken video with 2 cameras of the same quality and am attempting to 'merge' the two video files.  What's the best way to 'sync' the 2 files?
    Thanks

The real answer is to do this in Final Cut Pro X with the new multicam feature with automatic syncing using the audio wave forms.
However, it is quite possible in iMovie.
Here is how I did it in iMovie.
I recently did this for a video of my niece's senior voice recital. (Video is below)
The key is to use the Cutaway feature of  iMovie. If you are not familiar with Cutaway, here is a good tutorial from Ken Stone.
I used the side camera as my base clips, and used the back camera as the cutaway clips. The back camera audio track was OK but had too much coughing and noise.
Here are tips for getting it lined up perfectly.
    1) In iMovie/Preferences make sure that you check "Display Time as hh:mm:ss:frames" so you can edit to the frame level. (Also, select "Show Advanced Tools so you get the Cutaway feature)
    2) In the iMovie Project View, set the thumbnail slider to 1/2 second so you have a great deal of control.
    3) Initially, leave the volume at 100% on the Cutaway track, so that both tracks are playing. You can hear when they are off.
    4) Click the "Waveforms" button in the Project view, so you get a visual cue of how to line up the tracks.
    5) Between the audible cues and the visual cues, you can nudge the cutaway back and forth one frame at a time by dragging until you have it perfect.
    6) When it is lined up to your satisfaction, set the volume slider of the Cutaway track to zero, and turn off the waveforms. You can also move the thumbnail slider back to 5 seconds or so.
    7) For some of the fine work, I switched to the "single row timeline view". This slows you down a bit, but lets you see the waveforms more clearly.
    8) I made heavy use of the iMovie Comment Marker feature. I watched the whole base video/audio track and inserted comment markers at the points where I wanted the Cutaway to begin and end. For example, a comment might say "Insert Cutaway 1". I would usually time the cutaway so it started at a distinct audio event, such as when the piano start. This comment marker made it easy to drag my cutaway to a point that was approximately correct.
    9) If you need to do a lot of cutaways, I find that it helps to use the SPLIT CLIP command in your project. This way you can have a single cutaway per clip, and this makes it easier to manage and is less processor and memory intensive for iMovie. I would use the comments to mark the entry and exit points of the cutaway as described above. I would then select that portion of the clip that included these markers plus a little more, so that a yellow border is around the selection. Then right-click/SPLIT CLIP (or CLIP/SPLIT CLIP in the top menu). This does not physically splt the clip within the Event. It only virtually splits the clip in the project.

  • Link to Video files gets lost

I am using Premiere Elements 11 Editor (Mac App Store). Ich have my project in the video folder of MacOS X, because after the installation of PRE11 the software forced me to copy the project that I've started in PRE9 to that folder. In the project a list of Video files was already included. The video files are on an external hard drive, plugged with USB 2.0.
After coming back to my project several times later and restarting the software, all links to the video files gets lost and I had to relink them one by one, even when I select more than one and click on Edit/Search Media. With more than 100 video files this is very annoying. Is there a way to bring PRE to the point that it remembers the links? I think this should be the minimum of a video editing software for that price.

    Welcome to the forum.
With the material on an external, you will need to set the Volume name (like a PC's drive letter, but with differences), to match what it was, when the material was Imported.
When media is Imported, the actual media files are NOT Copied over to the Project, but instead, absolute Paths to the media files are established in lnks to it. If anything changes in the absolute Path, then PrE will find the links broken, and they must be re-established.
On a PC, I could step you through the process of setting the drive letter in the OS, so that it is always the same (that is part of the absolute Path), but on a Mac, I am lost, being a PC-only guy. Others, who are on, and know Mac's, will be able to help you with the Volume name.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Premiere Pro CC won't play audio from video file

I've been trying to edit videos recorded with Bandicam in Premiere Pro CC. The video file itself is fine, when I play it in Windows Media Player it all checks out, but once I get it into a sequence in Premiere Pro CC despite it showing the audio track, and turning the volume to max, there's no sound! How do I get it to pick up the audio that I KNOW is there?

  • Video files on SD card

I hope this isn't too dumb of a question.
I recently updated to the new OSX Mountain Lion.  I have an SDHC card from my video camera that has several separate video files on it.  In the prevous OSX, it showed up in the finder as a folder and had all the files separated in it.  Now, in Mountain Lion, it shows the icon as just a quicktime file.  When I click on it, it opens up a sub window, but I am unable to move the files from this window.
My question:  How can I separate these video files without transferring them all to the same location?  It wont let me click and drag them one by one from this sub window.
    Thanks.

    Let's see...
Sounds like you're running into an expected issue if you make an alias to removeable media.  The same thing would happen if you made the alias to a folder on a DVD-R disc or CD-R.  If you eject the original, you disable the alias.
If you copy the entire SD card volume to your drive, the PRIVATE package should copy across.  Then, as a folder on your hard drive rather than a volume on removeable media, you could make an alias to the STREAM package for quicker access later.
I'm pretty sure that Handbrake, like Prmeiere Pro, can see the MTS files directly.  That is, it's not dependant on the other folders in the PRIVATE directory sturcture.  As such, you could copy the contents of the STREAM package to another folder on your drive.  Just be mindful of the default MTS file names if you're using more than one SD card (you don't want to accidentally copy 00001.MTS from one card over 00001.MTS from another card).
As long as Handbrake sees MTS directly, you could even rename the MTS files after you've copied them.
On a side note, I almost always archive my SD cards with the data structure intact.  More often than not, that file structure is important to corretly access the video stored within that structure.  If something unexpected happens while working with the MTS files, it is good to have the original file structure to go back to.  Although, SD cards are getting to be so low cost that sometimes I just label the SD card and store it for archiving.

  • Extracting audio from video file to edit...

i know in imovie it's easy you just select the video then go up top and select the extract audio tab...
but how can you extract the audio from a video file in final cut so are able to edit the audio and video files separately from one another WITHIN final cut??

no output volume? ... you need to check your setting under the View menu > Audio Playback ... where are you sending the audio? maybe you're routing it to follow the video out through firewire to your DV device, in which case you need to turn up the speakers on your DV monitoring equipment
...or is this a muxed MPEG file? if so you need to demux it before bringing it into FCP, or better still, convert it to a more appropriate edit codec (you can use the excellent and free MPEG Streamclip application to do this)

  • The disk or volume to which files go.

    Forum,
My MacBook Pro has three volumes.
The internal disk is partitioned into two volumes.
"SYSTEM' which contains the OS and Applications.
"OTHER" which started empty but now contains :
    Final Cut Pro Documents
    Audio render Files
    Autosave Vault
    Capture Scratch
    Reder Files
    Waveform Cache Files
    Thumbnail Cache Files
I think this this is normal
There is a third volume,"VIDEO FILES" which is an external drive and to which I have downloaded the video files.
I have been using Compressor and DVD Studio and although I choose for the MPEG2 files resulting from Compressor to be downloaded to the desk top I could not locate them despite an Icon appearing there
Well,I thought they would be in" VIDEO FILES" but found them in "SYSTEM"
    I am very confused.
Can any one comment on this.
    Thank you
    Michael Craven.

    Hi Michael,
before you submit a job with compressor you may want to double check the destination of your compressed file. If you did not set your destination in the "destination" tab, next to settings tab then before you submit you can go to main menu>target>destination and choose the destination of your MPEG2 and AC3 files. Your choice will appear in the rectangle including project name, icon, settings and destination of your project. If you chose desktop as destination then the files will not go to the external drive that you called "VIDEO FILES" but to your "SYSTEM VOLUME".
When the encoding is over the history window reports the process as successful. Still in the History window (right lower corner of Compressor interface or hit command +1 to see it) if you click/open the little arrow before the title of the project you can see that more info appears, more specifically the name of your encoded files plus on the far right you can see two small magnifiers icon one for the audio file and the other for the video. If you click on them Compressor will show you where your encoded files are.
    Hope that helps,
    Best,
    G.

  • Issue with video files

    running Windows 7
Whenever I import a video file into Photoshop CS6 the audio plays but the playback screen is black. There's also no image in the timeline and no thumbnail present when using bridge or Lightroom 4. Videos will also not play in Lightroom library module (audio ok). Every video I've tried works in Windows media player or QuickTime and the video thumbnail is visible when I use Windows Explorer to look for files.
