Hi,
i am trying to install Leopard on iMac 20" (not the last model); the installer sees the volumes (Macintosh HD and XP, installed with Bootcamp on Tiger); it says "impossible install OSX 10.5 on volume"; it happens both with Macintosh HD both, obviously, with XP; I would like to do a "clean installation" (not erase&install or upgrading), but I can not click on "options" because volume is not available.

A "clean" install is an erase and install.
How much freespace is on your OS-X partition?
Have your run the DU in Tiger and checked your HD and also checked permissions?
Do you have eDisk installed?

Audio stopped working only getting 'dock connector'/ 'no volume available messages

Last week, my iPad2 suddenly stopped producing external sound e.g. radio with the message of 'no volume available' coming up. Switching to the iPod app, the mesage of 'dock connector' appears.
I can hear everything if I insert my headphones but this is not practical for me as I move about the house/ workstation.
I am presently overseas and I've already run through every suggestion from Apple's Help line experts with no fix.
From review other message boards, this seems to be a growing probblem. Any advice from anyone?

Solution discovered: The iPad had not been properly ejected when last docked to my laptop. Please ensure that you get the 'Eject' prompt when you right-click. If you do not, try to eject via iTunes programme on PC/ laptop. If 'Eject' prompt is still not present, take out Apple USB and re-insert into the PC dock (or another USB dock location on the computer) as it is not being recognised by iTunes or PC/ laptop. 'Eject' command should then appear and you then click on it. Voila!

Bronze G3, new drive: no volumes available. How come?

I have a PB Bronze G3 333/512, and I've just installed a Samsung 40GB Spinpoint M 5400rpm drive. When trying to install Panther, I see no volumes available (as in no icons at all in the "Select a Destination" screen).
The drive has two NTFS partitions on it from a previous XP install. Does this prevent 10.3 from seeing the drive as a viable volume for install (ie: is Panther "non-destructive)?
I have reset the PRAM with no luck. So, my questions are:
1) Do I have to manually kill these partitions on a Windows machine before I can install 10.3?
2) Is there a way of deleting partition information during the Panther install process? I expected to see one, but maybe I'm missing something.
3) Is there a way I can check to see if the PB even sees the drive? I feel kind of "blind" here, because there's no evidence during the install that the drive even exists.
I'm sorry if these are stupid questions (I've searched), but I'm kind of new to the Mac scene.

If you can boot from the Panther install CD, go to the Installer menu and open Disk Utility. You should see the HDD there. Select the manufacturer ID in the left panel, and Erase in the main panel. Make sure the Volume Format is set to Mac OS Extended, and the Install OS 9 Drivers checkbox is checked. Name your volume. You can just click erase, or select Options and choose to zero all data. This process takes several hours but it completely erases the HDD. Your volume should then show up for installation after you quit DU.

'No Volume Available' but headphones work

Weird problem just cropped up today on my iPhone 4 (no longer under warranty). If I try to play the Music app, Pandora, YouTube and many other sound apps I can't hear the audio over the speaker and on some apps a message appears saying 'No Volume Available' on the screen. It has this message in Pandora, in YouTube and the music app just don't have the volume slider.
If I plug in headphones all work normally.
If I use the Phone app, or Talkatone I can hear the audio via the earpiece and I can switch it to the speaker. So I know the speaker system works as some apps detect the speaker and can route audio through there. Skype on the other hand works via speakerphone but not via the earpiece. Key-clicks and lock sounds don't work via the speaker.
I've reset the iPhone a few times, 2x via holding down the power key and shutting it down then restarting with the Apple logo and once forcing a shutdown via power+home buttons.
I've restored the iPhone, I'm running iOS 5.0.1, bluetooth is off, mute switch on the side is on (I've switched it both on and off, didn't do anything). I've tried plugging/unplugging in headphones to see if debris or something would be knocked loose but that didn't work. Plugging/unplugging dock connector several times didn't work either.
I'm wondering if an app I tired did something weird electrically? I had a headphone jack plugged-in and ran the TASCAM recording app to try and record something. Had a tough time figuring it out and it was while I was trying it that the problem seemed to occur as I couldn't hear anything recorded via the app.
I've since removed the app and done all of the above to no avail. I'm going to try another restore. And don't suggest I just go to an Apple Store, the nearest one is a few hundred miles away on another island.

I went to an Apple Store and let a 'Genius' check it out. First thing he says is that the water damage indicator was activated in the bottom dock connector. I've never dropped my iPhone 4 in water though I probably do live in one heck of a humid place so maybe that's why it activated. He had opened it up and I asked him if there was any indication at all if there was water damage in the iPhone and he said 'no.'
I let him wipe the phone since I had it backed-up via iTunes. Then it started to work and thought we had it fixed but then all of a sudden it stopped producing sound again. This is with no extra apps loaded on it and right there at the Genius Bar with the Genius there. He operated the controls and was just stumped.
He said because it was out of warranty I could get a replacement one there at Apple for (I forget) something like $149, or I could wait a few week when I can get an early upgrade to an iPhone 4S for $199 (that would only be for the 16GB model, mine is a 32GB iPhone 4).
So yeah, the Genius couldn't figure it out. The phone's sound continues to have this problem along with the problem, which I hear many people have, of the home button being disfunctional at times. The iPhone 4 is a flawed design in so many ways: Antenna, Home Button, Audio System, Lower Battery life with iOS 5.

No destination volume available in disk utility or install screen

I recently upgraded my Macbook Pro to Snow leopard. Abouot 4 days later, my Mac crashed. When I tried to restart, it came up with the grey screen with apple logo and spinning disc. I have tried all of the resets. I then decided to try and re-boot from the SL install disk. When it asked me to choose a destination volume, however, there was none available. I tried disk utility, but there was no disk available there either. I then went back and tried to use the original install disc that came with the Mac...same results.
It appears that my internal hard disk has disappeared. I wonder if i am going to have to replace the hard drive?

You probably will. It's possible that it became unplugged, in which case it needs to be plugged in again.

Make volumes available to mortal users

Hi,
How do I make a mounted disk available to all users connect to the machine over AppleShare? Right now only admin users seem to be able to access those volumes.

YOu need to set up a share point for the volume or specific folders within the volume.
you can do so manually in netinfo or with a gui interface like Sharepoints by Hornware. ID reccommend the later if youre no looking for a bunch of fuss.

No volume available in RMAN-default family

Mini Bridge is avoiding Adobe Drive Volumes. Why is it like this? It looks like it pro-actively tries to hide them.
One of the few exceptions is in InDesign, when you try to show a linked resource in Mini Bridge. Then it will show the actual folder, but when navigating some folders up, the process associated to Mini Bridge will crash.
Is it possible to activate Adobe Drive Volumes in Mini Bridge? Or will it be possible in a future version?

Looking for an app to display contents of unmounted volumes?

Posting here in SL because that's the OS I'm using on this computer. MacPro 1,1. OS 10.6.8, 10 gig.
I'm doing a major backup of my personal media RAIDset...about 8 TB of home videos, movies, and stuff I want to keep forever.
Ultimately, the backup drives will be taken over to a video house and dumped to LTO tape. Each tape comfortably holds about 1.75 TB, so I'm splitting the 8TB from the RAID across 5 2TB drives.
Here's the problem...I can't mount all 5 backup drives at once, and so I'd like to find some sort of app which can take a snapshot of the volume catalog..basically, I'd like to have the finder window for each volume available, even when the drive isn't mounted. This way, I could see what files I've copied to what drive, without having to mount and unmount drives constantly, just to check what's on each.
Anything like this around? The closest I can get currently is a utility called WhatSize, which creates a column view of a volume, which I can then screen grab. However, I'd like something that behaves like a folder window, with the files and folders available interactively (eg, I can click on a disclosure triangle and see the files/folders within).
