No volumes found in backup

I have a 27inch iMac running Mavericks and a recent Time Capsule to provide backup using Time Machine. My hard disk failed and has been replaced by Apple Store but when I come to restore my data from back up, I get the message 'No Volumes found in backup'. I knoe the Time Capsule is holding 400Gb of data so what does it mean....and can I get my data back?
Regards
Richard

When you restarted the Mac with the hard drive that had been replaced, Setup Assistant should have appeared first, asking if you wanted to transfer files from another Mac or a Time Machine backup to the "new" Mac.
If Setup Assistant did not appear, or it appeared and you bypassed it, I would suggest that you return the Mac to the Apple Store so that they can reinstall the operating system again on the Mac.
As long as you are doing that, take the Time Capsule to the Apple Store as well and ask them to set up your Mac using the Time Machine backup.
For more information about Setup Assistant, see Pondini's excellent support materials on this subject:
http://pondini.org/TM/19.html
The same information would apply to the Mavericks operating system.

Message says No volumes found in backup.   What are "volumes"?  What to do? ??

I did not figure it out.  Took my computer and time machine to the Apple store, they agreed that it would be hard for me to restore on my own (I'd lost contacts).  Can't remember all the details, and I still don't know where several addresses have gone (maybe I de-duped in too much haste).  I'm glad I leave near a store/Genius bar - don't know what I'd do otherwise.

    Hi,
You can define your backup media using Database Assistant (DB50) , check the following link:

If you had two different computers running time machine backups to the TC both should create sparsebundles which stay separate.
Even if you migrated files from the iMac backup to the MBP it should not then take over the iMac backup.
But check from the MBP.. mount the hard disk of the TC in the MBP and see if there are two sparsebundles or now only one.
Check the disk capacity against what you have show on the TM in the two computers.. do they match up.
Mavericks must have some serious issues as it is happening rather too often.
I strongly recommend to people who read this.. do not upgrade to Mavericks until you create a disk image of the current computer using another software like superduper or CCC.. TM does not cut it.

  • Shadow Volume on NCS - Backup with Syncsort BEX

    Hi all,
I've got a Shadow Volume working great inside NCS, but my problem is I'm not able to backup the Shadow volume part.
In BEX I'm able to browse and expand both the Primary volume and the Shadow volume and see the correct files (as my Shadow rule stores only ISO files) Backuping up files in the Primay volume works great, but when selecting the Shadow volume the job fails.
I'll chated with Syncsort's support team and told this should work with there software. Has anyone done this? is there something I need to do to the way my Shadow Volume is setup?

I ran across this thread while trying to find a solution, so I am posting here in case anyone else has this problem and needs a work around for backing up a cluster DST shadow volume.
We ran into this issue and spent a lot of time with Syncsort support. We found our own work around.
The problem according to Syncsort is that the archive pool/volume do not show up when you run the command #slptool findsrvs smdr.novell.
In Novell's documentation the cluster pool associated with a DST Shadow Volume is not to be brought online. The DST Shadow Volume is brought online as part of the cluster pool of the volume it is backing. So what we did is modify the cluster pool script for the DST Shadow Volume pool so that it doesn't actually bring a volume online but the pool can still be online. So now both cluster pools are online and are showing up in slptool but the volume is still mounting as part of the other pool. Since the pool is now showing up in slptool we can back up that volume.
Below are the cluster pool scripts. The first is the script of the cluster pool which brings up both the main volume and the shadow volume. The second script is for the cluster pool associated with the shadow volume but which has the lines commented out which mount the volume (we don't want the volume to mount twice).
    #!/bin/bash
    . /opt/novell/ncs/lib/ncsfuncs
    # activate the secondary pool
    exit_on_error nss /poolact=U1ARCPOOL
    # activate the primary pool
    exit_on_error nss /poolact=USERS1POOL
    sleep 5
    #exit_on_error ncpcon mount USERS1=252
    exit_on_error ncpcon mount USERS1=252,shadowvolume=U1ARC
    exit_on_error add_secondary_ipaddress 10.10.10.127
    exit_on_error ncpcon bind --ncpservername=SC1-USERS1-SERVER --ipaddress=10.10.10.127
    exit_on_error novcifs --add '--vserver=".cn=SC1-USERS1-SERVER.ou=NCS.o=SURGERY.t=SURGERY."' --ip-addr=10.10.10.127
    exit 0
    #!/bin/bash
    . /opt/novell/ncs/lib/ncsfuncs
    #exit_on_error nss /poolact=U1ARCPOOL
    #exit_on_error ncpcon mount U1ARC=251
    exit_on_error add_secondary_ipaddress 10.10.10.128
    exit_on_error ncpcon bind --ncpservername=SC1-U1ARC-SERVER --ipaddress=10.10.10.128

  • HT1414 I'm trying to restore from an earlier backup but my iphone only shows the most recent. I'm on Windows Vista and found the backup folder. If I delete the recent files, will it force the iPhone to backup from the next older file?  Why doesn't it show

I'm trying to recover a file and the app company said to restore from an earlier backup.  My iPhone only shows the most recent backup.  I've been searching the net for answers - I found the back up file and date sorted them (over 6mb of files).  How can I get my iPhone to restore from an earlier backup?
I am on Windows Vista so I don't have Time Machine.
I have backed up the backup folder so if I mess it up, I have it in a separate place.
Can I just delete all the files with todays date in that backup folder and have it forced to the next oldest date?
Why doesn't the iPhone show a list of the least several backups.
    Info:
    iPhone 4S
    Software version  5.1.1
Backed up to computer through iTunes (not iCloud)

As you backup the iPhone in iTunes, it overwrites the last backup. Files are kept as they are changed, so that would explain how you get different dates in your backup folder. The only backups that are saved and not overwritten are the ones done just prior to a restore. You do have the option to go back in time on a Windows computer, however depending on the last time you set a restore point in Windows, it could be back further than you are willing to go.

  • Virus found while backups were being run

I RDP'd into my App server for my Intranet and found this lovely message waiting for me from Symantec:

I'm at a loss as to what to do with this.  The Backupadm ID is the user ID that runs our Commvault backups.  I've checked with them and they say that all SP cached data is written to the D:\, and that NO commvault data get's written to the C:\,
    let alone C:\users.
I can't figure out what could be in the webtempdir folder because the backup account never logs in to the desktop.  And the Exploit is a Powerpoint exploit, and we don't even have Office installed on these servers.  I can't figure out how to go
forward with this.  The Backup account has Full Read/Write access to the entire system, so I need to figure out what the virus is, and make absolutely sure that it's nowhere else in the system.
Any ideas would be most appreciated.
    Ted

I have deleted pictures and files to free space on my mac book air.  It did not free space and the backups file shows that even deting files it did not help.
Please let me know how to delete the files on backups folder.
    Thank you,

    Have you emptied your trash?
    Finder Menu > Empty trash…
That will remove the items that were on the internal disk & were in the Trash.
What is the backup you are talking about? Is this a Time Machine backup?

  • No volumes found

ok, whenever i try to install something, it all goes fine until i come up to the point where it asks which volume to install said thingy onto. then, it gives me no options. joy. i have enough space on my computer, and i have the right system requirements..
anyone care to enlighten me? :P

well, i have updated my iTunes before, so i'm guessing that my boot volume DOES have iTunes. i have tried creaing a new user admin to install something, anything, and none of it works. yet another problem: whenever i run Software Update, it gives me the screen and starts searching, gets 1/6 of the way there on the bar, and never moves again. i left it on overnight with hope of success, but nothing happened.
i have a mac mini, if that helps..
