No warning iOS 6 would erase my contacts!!

My life is ruined. People are gone from my life. Thanks, Apple.
Your update asked me about backing up contacts. phone, etc., on iCloud AFTER the update was completed!!
Nice going. That's effing brilliant work, guys. Good job of considering the customer's needs.

When I frst got the phone, I tried to sync it with iCloud. Unbeknownest to me, that didn't succeed. Apple says there's a partial back-up in my history only. So, your solution isn't helping me. As for an address book on my computer, that's got the same blank iCloud, since the iPhone update installed iCloud on my Apple ID. If you mean, address book through Google, that seems to be synched to my facebook contacts -- not phone numbers. So, they're all gone, Mr. Smarty-Pants.  I didn't know what I was doing before -- but when my contacts disappeared, you can be sure I delved into what happened and the various possibilities of recovery. I didn't ask for your help with it. I was venting about Apple's programming blind-spot. They're all "iCloud" and "synching" with other devices...whereas I all I wanted was a dang phone that stored my numbers so I could call them when I needed.

If the supported address book app on your computer includes contacts as well as your iPhone, you will be provided a merge prompt with the first sync for this data, which you want to select.

  • IOS update erased all of my photos, even in iTunes?!

I am concerned that the latest iOS update erased all of my data on my phone, including every picture and video I ever took of my 2 year old daughter.
I regularly connect my Phone to my computer, so I had imagined that iTunes was backing up my data.  But as far as I can tell, this is not true.  It looks like it's all gone.  My phone has no photos.  iTunes has no photos.
    Here's what happened:
When I agreed to upgrade the OS, the phone "verified" the update and then told me to connect to iTunes.  When I did, iTunes told me that the phone was in "restore" mode, and that I had to restore it to factory settings, which would delete all of my data.
Turning off the phone didn't help, the only was forward was a restore.  I was concerned, but assumed that things were backed up on my computer.
Once my phone was "ready to use" everything was gone.
There are three backups of this phone in iTunes:  one from a few minutes ago, one from when the iOS update and restore finished, one from 9 months ago, and older ones.  There is not one from the backup I thought I was making a couple of days ago.  It's all gone.
Note: I have updated iOS many times before, but never before has it erased all of my stuff.  Something is different this time.
    I do not use iCloud.
I regularly back up my computer to my Time Capsule.  Is there maybe some way that I can restore an old backup from that or something?
    I'm very upset.
    Please help.

My girlfriend just had a similar thing happen.  She orginally got her iPhone 5 2 months ago.  Sunday morning she clicked the recent update.  As it downloaded it prompted her to plug into itunes.  When she did it said that the install failed and she would need to restore the phone to continue.  Not really know what any of that meant, she restored the phone. After that she had no photos, no contacts, no apps and no calendar.
She is really only concerned about the photos (her sister just had a baby, she took the photos) we took it to the apple store and the guy said there was nothing that can be done.  Seriously, no photos could be recovered. were probably talking about 500 mbs of photos.
I checked for the restore files and one said 11/26 a few days before she bought the phone and then 2/3/12 with a time after the wipe happened.
Icloud doesnt have any photos.  Is she really out of luck like the Apple store guy said, is there really nothing that  can be recovered.  I've erased a memory stick before on my camera and I was able to restore all photos, wondering if there is something like this that can be done.  Any ideas?

  • IOS 6.1 editing contacts photo crash

Hello. I think this may be a user-wide 6.1 issue, meaning everyone with an iPhone 5 and iOS 6.1 (at least) are susceptible to this bug/crash.
Normally when I edit my contacts and give that contact a photo, I would copy the thumbnail (little square) from the camera roll album, without actually opening the full-size photo. After doing this, I would go into Contacts > Edit and longpress over the "add photo" and putting "paste" would drop the thumbnail into the contact. Reason behind this was so that when I get a call from any contact, I get a small thumbnail photo as opposed to their big face/large photo appearing on my phone (I just find this more refined). It worked fine in the past, as I often am adding new photos to my contacts.
Today however I tried the same and discovered that I am experiencing a fully-reproducible crash... go ahead and try it. Go to your camera roll, copy any of your thumbnail photos (don't open the photo), then go to Contacts (or Phone) app, Edit, and paste it over the "add photo" (or existing photo). This will instantly cause the Contacts/Phone app to crash, without saving any data you have edited within that contact by that time. It's very frustrating because it means I can't edit my contact pictures at all by this method, no matter where the photo originates from or what contact/type of contact I'm editing. (FYI: All contacts of mine sync through iCloud)
I have tried power cycling the iPhone (turn off/on), rebooting (holding sleep+home), and jettisoning all my apps. Nothing fixes the issue, so I have come to the conclusion that it must be an iOS 6.1 bug, at least on the iPhone 5. If anyone has any solutions, recommendations, or has also experienced this... please help.

I ran into the same problem on iOS 6.1 on an iPhone 4S.  Same repro steps except that I copied my image from within Safari.  I agree that this method of adding images is best as it avoids having to safe the image you want to use to the photos app.

  • Cannot erase some contacts

I have 3 contacts in my device -out of 1000+ total contacts- that cannot be erased nor even edited. WHen I try to erase them noth¡ng happens, and despite I can change some information while editing, I'm not able to save those changes since I get a message saying "Address updated externally. Data will not be saved and the visor will be closed".
Those 3 contacts do not appear in my computers contact list, just in the device. I have even tried  erasing all contact information, and indeed all the contacts are erased EXCEPT these 3 contacts.
Any clue on what I should do to remove these "ghost" contacts?
    Thanks

Try to clear your devices Address Book Database. To clear the Address Book completely check following steps:
Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to the computer.
    Open BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
Double-click Backup and Restore, then click Advanced.
From the list of Device Databases, select the appropriate database.  For your problem, select Address Book.
    Click Clear.
In the Warning window, click OK.
Make sure that you have a backup of your address book before clearing the database because you'll be ablr to restore them again.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Installing iOS 5 erases all previous data

Installation of iOS 5 erased all previous data on my iPad. Help! Prior to iCloud being in the picture, where were all my photos and documents backed up?
I am attempting to locate the files which vanished upon updating to iOS 5 - hundreds of pdf files, thousands of uploaded photos, screen shots, saved photos from web, ALL GONE. So were all my acquired apps, although those have been replaced - now I can begin or attempt to reconstitute the complex folder structure (notes, notes 2, notes 3, etc.) which grew over the last few iOS iterations, from too many apps stuffed into folders with strict limitations on contents. Tedious, but possible. Re all the photos, I'm still looking for clues: Is solid state storage similar to that on disk drives – does deleted information still reside on the drive, just not on the index?
Also, post updating, I am continually being prompted to authorize my computer, even though it is, and my Apple ID is intermittently rejected as if invalid, this is causing syncing challenges.
    Thanks.
Weary of chasing side effects of upgrading operating systems.

Same for me, when install was finished all was gone, but strange enough the disk space bar was indicating 14Go other and that was exactly my content "in app" without apps, photos, video and music. So this data was not accessible due to missing apps and all my photo/video/music was gone.
I had exactly the same issue last upgrade, and last time I decided to resync my media content and started to add apps one by one again, and by magic almost all the apps managed to find back their data in the 14Go "other" that was still in the IPad. But I had to redo a lot of work like Icon position, some settings, and some apps didn't restore well. Took me a very long time and effort to get back to a nominal situation.
So this time I deciced instead to click "Restore" before doing any sync and used the backup that was generated automaticly just before the upgrade to 5.0 (so still with version 4 of ths IOS)
The process started, the Ipad rebooted and firmware was then loaded again (still 5.0) and the 14Go data from the backup was reloaded also, and this time after this quite long step, itunes started to restore apps, music, photos and videos one by one ... was quite a very long process but at the end all was perfect, storage was back to 40 Go including my 14Go data and all photos, videos and apps, with all setting perfectly restored.
    Hope this help,
    Patrick

If you've been using your phone as recommended your contacts should still be on your computer (in Outlook or Address Book) or with a cloud service like Google or MobileMe.  Just synch them back.

  • IOS 7 - no carddav Contacts

I have some carddav contacts groups on my iphone. But CardDAV works no longer for me, since I upgraded to iOS7.
If I set the iOS 7 incorrectly set URL correctly, I can add in iOS 7 a contacts account without error messages. But I cannot use the added contacts account from owncloud as a group in the app contacts.
I'm completely stumped:?: What's wrong or how I can solve the problem.
Does anyone have a tip for me?
    Thank you!

The bug is effectively confirmed, and the reason relates to the connection URL that iOS7 creates automatically.
I found those infos on Owncloud forums, I assume it should work for any CardDAV server.
Details are the followings : Let's assume your CardDAV URL is https://www.myurl.com/r/owncloud/remote.php/carddav/addressbooks/USERNAME".
iOS7 tries to contact the CardDAV Server using the following URL : (please not string in bold is dupplicated)
    [11/Aug/2013:18:05:48 +0200] "PROPFIND /owncloud/remote.php/carddav/addressbooks/USERNAME /contacts/owncloud/remote.php/carddav/principals/USERNAME/ HTTP/1.1" 401 1163 "-" "iOS/7.0 (11A4449a) dataaccessd/1.0"
    [11/Aug/2013:18:05:48 +0200] "PROPFIND /owncloud/remote.php/carddav/addressbooks/USERNAME/contacts/owncloud/remote.php/carddav/principals/USERNAME/ HTTP/1.1" 404 1163 "-" "iOS/7.0 (11A4449a) dataaccessd/1.0"
Here is the "user" fix (worked for me and other users from the forum). For the above, replace the URL with yours, of course.
Go the Mail, Contacts and Calendar settings.
    Then add an account ("other").
Add a CardDAV account (note for the server : do not input trailing http:// or https://)
    Server : www.myurl.com/owncloud/remote.php/carddav/addressbooks/USERNAME
Enter username and password and click Next.
iOS should verify account correctly (but is not finished, contacts won't sync).
Go in your account settings, the Advanced settings
    - SSL enabled
    - Port 443
    - Delete account URL content and replace it with : https://www.myurl.com/owncloud/remote.php/carddav/addressbooks/USERNAME
    Click back, then OK.
iOS will complain that is not possible to connect with SSL. Click Cancel (to not attempt to configure the account without SSL)
iOS will complain once more saying it can't verify account data.
    Click OK
iOS will indicate that Contacts may not be synchronized.
    Click Save !
Your contact should sync again when going in the Contacts app.

  • Ios 8.1 phone contacts don't sync to MacBook Pro 10.6.8 using iTunes 11.3.1

As noted in the header, any new contacts entered into my iPhone 5s will not sync to my MacBook Pro via iTunes when I try to sync via wifi or direct usb connection. What's up with that? New contacts that I enter directly into the laptop will sync to the iPhone, not visa versa. Anyone have any idea how I can fix this?

Try resetting it: hold the on/off and home buttons until you see the Apple logo (ignoring the off slider that appears first), and release.  If that doesn't work, connect to iTunes, go to the Summary tab and Restore.
