No whine issue?

I just came back from an Apple retailer and they had two MacBooks on display. The white unit (4H620) had the high frequency whine, the black unit (4H622) was completely quiet. I place my good ear about 2 inches from the keyboard, both units were idle and connected to a Magsafe.
Apparently the black unit has been on display since day 1 but it has been sent back for repair twice. The serial number seems to indicate that the original display unit may have had parts replaced thus changing the serial number.
Is it possible that there's fix for the whine? I find it disconcerting that some buyers are getting whine free units and some are not. Is there a list of serial numbers affected by the whine or moo? Maybe we need to start a database of serial numbers and the various issues.

I've had my Macbook for three days now and it has been nothing short of amazing! This is my first Mac, and I was reluctant to buy after reading about all the problems. I don't think the heat is unbearable, and I use it on my lap for extended periods of time. It's pretty much silent under most conditions, but a fan does kick on when I do something like install programs or use a cd. I think it might have mooed once or twice last night, but the sound was so faint I couldn't recognize it from recordings I've heard on the internet. I have a week 21 Macbook.

  • Resolved Whinning Issue Once and For All

I finally resolved the whinning issue... I resolved the issue by returning my MBP for a full refund. Of course I'm without a laptop now, but at least I can no longer hear that annoying whinning - and you won't hear me whine anymore, either Plus, I'm $2800 richer! Guess I need to start looking at other options out there with my 28 hundee...

I've got an idea! give some of that money to me! I'll
use it for college tuition and other expenses when I
go later on this year (either OSU of UofM). Those
'other expenses' may or may not include a MBP!
But indeed there is a lot of room for a "MAY" include MBP...
    What's college without a mac?

  • What is it talking apple so long to create an update for the whine issue?

I think it is pretty ridiculous that the only update apple has released that effects the whine issue, only makes it worse. Even worse is that users over here have managed to detect and resolve the issue before apple has managed to do so. So come on apple, what's taking so long? It's amazing how badly this situation is being handled.

They know about the whine issue, i just talked to a product specialist who told me that they knew about it.
He also told me that Apple was not planning on adressing it since the cpu whine was within specifications.
As i said, it was a product specialist not an engineer so there is still a little hope regarding this issue being fixed sometime in the future.
I am not the only one to be disappointed about this and other problems that MBPs have.
But for now i m going to try and enjoy what i have , at the end of the year i will buy a sony loaded with vista since Apple is not able to give me satisfaction.
I m a loyal Apple customer since many years, but i have had enough, no more repairs or exchanges for me; I wil just be switching back!
The only thing that could make me change my mind is if Apple recalled my defective computer in order to give me a machine free of problem.
So far it's impossible since they don't have such a machine in stock.

  • Anyone with week 15 (W8615) or week 16 (W8616) machines have whine issues?

My DOA MBP, week 14 (W8614), is going back as soon as receive the shipping label.
I'll most probably be getting a W8616 machine back. Could someone with a newer build please post if you are having heat/whine issues or logic board problems like I did.
    Thanks

Well here's my situation: I'm on my 3rd MBP 2.0 right now. Have gone through a Week 13 and 2 Week 10's (currently have a 10). All 3 have had the whine/hiss, all have been alleviated by QuietMBP. One went back due to a problem with the onboard sound card (not with the speakers), and one due to the whine as well as a barely-functional left shift key.
My current unit, a Week 10, runs mostly well...has the whine when plugged in and on battery, and is having some intermittent Airport issues...wakes up and reconnects from Sleep just fine, but will drop the connection (more often in XP) every couple hours, requiring a reboot to fix it (disable/enable won't do it). Heat? Yeh it's pretty warm, but I came from having a P4 3.0Ghz (desktop processor) 17" laptop before this one that was literally scorching, and made of plastic, so I can understand and deal with the heat on the MBP.
I have a few days left until my 14 days are up, and I'm going to take this unit (my 3rd) back for one final exchange...hopefully for a Week 15 unit. After that, if I don't get lucky and end up with further problems I will likely demand a refund a week or so later. Will post and keep you updated.

  • Analyzing the "idle CPU whine" issue

    Hi All,
I have been waiting for a solution for the "idle CPU whine" issue since I returned my MacBook Pro because of the whine.
First of all, we need to filter out all the posts where a person says that he does not have the whine but has not heard a whining unit. So, we need to focus only on experiences of people who hear the whine or do not hear whine but have heard the whine in another unit.
Secondly, I think that the build week number has no significance on the whine issue. More interesting would be to have people sending here the last part of their serial number, which supposedly is some kind of configuration code, and stating if they have the idle CPU whine or not. Maybe we could get some new information out of that.
Do also state, if you have actually compared a whining and a non-whining unit. If you have not compared the no-whine opinions are useless as they are merely opinions without a reference to a faulty unit.

This was posted on MacFitIt today (www.macfixit.com)
" Mike, I thought you might find this reply from Apple regarding my contacting them with a noise issue with the MacBook Pro. I noticed that if I were to disable a processor core the noise immediately stopped and this is Apple's reply.
    Eric"
    Begin forwarded message:
"Hi Eric, I heard back from engineering and was informed that this normal behavior for the MacBook Pro. When the processors are idle a capacitor on the logic board will take on additional power loads causing the capacitor to vibrate, thus creating the noise. Turning off the second processor and/or using better energy saver settings reduces the load on the capacitor causing the noise not to occur.

  • WHINE ISSUES - UPDATE apple customer relations/tech

Just wanted to let you all know:
    a. Many of you are aware of my unique situation (going through 3 replacement macbooks and all having the whine) I spoke to apple today and talked to cust relations first - been working with them for the whole case. Basically, he said that they are still working on a fix for the whine and the whine is apparent in many mac books regardless of build date. (as i have a week 13 now)
    b. Senior Tech Support - told me that there is information that he is not allowed to disclose but that the basic idea about the logic boards being revised is accurate. Many of them are being repaired in texas, however, it seems as if that doesn't eliminate the noise altogether. Of course, I asked, "So is the logic board issue resolving the whine issue then, cause based on what you just stated, it doesn't sound like it" And for this he told me he he cannot share any other information but they are working on it.
So this is just an update to you all - I'm not saying any of this is "official" but I am telling you this is a first hand conversation/update from apple.
My guess is that many of the logic boards aren't really making a difference and the problem is with something else. Something that is probably pretty huge - design flaw? I don't know

    Jake,
Thanks for the update! Boot Camp is far from my priority list - I too am having a hard time with the high-pitched whine. Although I am still on my first MBP, I have had the logic board and inverter replaced at a local Apple Authorized Service Provider. The inverter corrected the screen buzz, but the whine issue remains the same. The firmware update changed nothing.
Today I contacted customer relations because I am still unsatisfied. I'm in Canada, so options are limited here. Canadians do not have the option of sending their MBP to Apple for repiar (not that that has proved successful for the Americans who have sent their's to Texas). But at this point, I am done running bck and fourth to ASP's.
I'm curious to know exactly how you managed to get your MBP replaced through customer relations. During my lengthly conversation with customer relations (Apple Canada), the person I was dealing with had me on hold while she consulted tech support. She came back and tried to tell me that the sound is within normal specifications and so on ... I'm sure you've heard it all. I hard to get a little more firm with her that there is nothing normal about this and I do not find it acceptable. I have requested a replacement MBP, but she said she will need to review this with her manager and get back to me. She's arranged a call back for tomorrow afternoon. So my question to you is .. did they give you a hard time about sending a replacement?? if so, how did you get them to send the replacement? Did you get the replacement first or did you have to send yours back before they sent a replacement?
Any information or tips you can give me would be appreciated so I am better prepared for tomorrow's call if they still don't want to send me a replacement. I know the chances are that I will I get another MBP that emits the infamous whine, but at this point I have nothing to lose.

  • The whine issue and its dissappearance

so maybe someone can answer this for me. ive read all the forums and am familiar with all the issues. i have a week 13 build 1.83 mbp. it has the whine that goes away with photobooth or the noisekiller. when i boot to xp via bootcamp there is no whine whatsoever. *** is up with this.

    Yes.
There was a bug in the Windows XP implementation that lead to this. Microsoft has acknowledged and patched this and users who have done so report that MacBooks now whine under XP with this patch. On the other hand, battery life is now marginally better than it was under XP (previously users were reporting that they experienced about 15 minutes less battery life under Windows than under OS X). I'm not sure what the current state of play is.
So, for those who think that Microsoft has more experience with power management on Intel processors, the real world experience says otherwise. Battery life seems to be longer under OS X.

  • Whine issue (again)

    Hello everyone
My Mb does whine, not so loud but it's still annoying. I've got 4 days to bring it back. Apart from whining no problems at all. If I exchange it for another one and it will whine or moo can I exchange it again outside of those 14 days. Also if they solve the problems in the future, lets say they will have to change logic board will they do it under warranty

I'm in a similiar situation. I bought a 2.16ghz MacBook Pro on Friday. I brought it home and discovered that it couldn't hold an airport signal and had kernel panics about every five minutes. The Apple Store replaced it with a new one. After taking the new one home, I discovered that it had a greyish blob in the middle of the screen and received another replacement on Saturday. After playing with this MacBook Pro for a couple of days, the whine has reared its ugly head. At this point, I'm not sure what to do. If I again take it back for a new machine, will they do it? Will I be told that it's within spec? I'm worried that if I return it, I'll get another machine with issues. Other than this problem, this MacBook Pro appears to be stellar. I'd appreciate any advice! Thanks!

Well, I'm new hear, but hopefully I can help you guys out.
I got my Macbook Pro 15 inch yesterday. This computer is was the newest, being in the 26th week of production.
Whine, from what I know it doesn't exist. This is the quietest laptop I've used, the only noise it makes is a near silent humming noise that I can't hear over the keystrokes or touching anything. Its very low and sounds like a low current brushless fan. This is always on for me, plugged in or not, high brightness or low. You can't hear this humming unless the room is dead silent[no moving, no typing, no scratching].
Is this the whine. Either way, I haven't been able to do anything to my Macbook pro except for maybe make it a bit hot.

  • Apple, please fix the "whine" issue.

Not much more to say, I love my MBP, but please fix this issue...

Apple is working on it on a case-by-case basis. It's not happening for everyone; I would guess that well less than half of the people using MBPs are experiencing the issue (I'm not). That's not much solice for the people who are, but you should be contacting Apple directly about it instead of complaining here where Apple will never hear you.

  • The reason for Apple's silence on the whine issue (my theory)

As you get older , your ability to hear high pitched noises diminishes. This is a well documented fact, and if you don't believe me go here:
    http://www.diyhappy.com/bug-some-of-them-darn-teenagers-or-create-an-adult-proof -ringtone/
listen to the sound and read the comments. (Note: The macbook pro speakers don't seem to be able to reproduce the high frequencies, but I can hear the noise with my desk speakers). YMMV.
Some stores in Europe play this sound over speakers to keep the kids away. It's so annoying it feels like your brain is being fried. However, old people don't even notice and go about their shopping as if nothing was happening.
Although the pitch is slightly higher in the recording mentioned above, perhaps the apple engineers are simply old and can't hear the noise. I know I can hear it - it drives me absolutely nuts. I have to run that "quiet macbookpro" program to get rid of it, eating into my CPU cycles and battery life. This is **** poor service from Apple in my opinion.
The worst thing about it is that this all seems to point to an issue that can be fixed via software. It's a simple matter of tuning the throttling software a bit to fix the noise. It boggles my mind why apple wouldn't simply release a patch to fix this once and for all.
Anyway, what do you guys think of my theory? The Mac bar "geniuses" might all have poor hearing too.

Interesting theory, but it has flaws.
First off, the Genius Bar employees are frequently not much older than high school graduates where I live. If you want to ensure they can hear it, ask them to find a quiet room in the store. Mind you, the problem of asking the Genius Bar employees to hear a high pitched sound after working in such loud music, is they are already probably partially deaf from being exposed to the loud music in the store, and will be for some time until they are out of the exposure of that loud music. The store I go to is never quiet, but who knows if they have a sound proof room in back. Ambient noises can obscure sounds like those too. I would call AppleCare and ask to have the machine mailed to their service center with specific instructions to take the machine into a sound proof room by someone whose hearing has not been compromised. Perhaps even include a printed page of the website and tape it to the MacBook or MacBook Pros when you send it in.

  • Permanent SOLUTION for the WHINE issue. STEP by STEP Instructions.

    Hi all,
Your dreams have come true. There is a cure for the whine that requires no programs to run and persists between reboots.
It requires the editing of one file. Please attempt this only if you understand what you are doing. I take no responsibility for your actions.
    Here are the steps:
    1. Find the file: -> System -> Library -> Extensions -> IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext
    2. Click the file and choose DUPLICATE from the File menu. Drag the copied file to somewhere safe.
    3. Control click the original file to get: SHOW PACKAGE CONTENTS
    4. Double click CONTENTS
    5. Double click PLUGINS
    Delete everything except:
    ACPISMCPlatformPlugin.kext
    Simple_PlatformPlugin.kext
    6. Control click ACPISMCPlatformPlugin.kext and again SHOW PACKAGE CONTENTS
    7. Double click CONTENTS
    8. Open the file: Info.plist with a text editor. I use Subethaedit.
    9. Look for the following:
    <dict>
    <key>DTC_WAB</key>
    <integer>10</integer>
    <key>DTC_WAT</key>
    <integer>0</integer>
    <key>GTC_WAB</key>
    <integer>15</integer>
    <key>GTC_WAT</key>
    <integer>15</integer>
    </dict>
    </array>
    <key>model</key>
    <string>MacBookPro1,1</string>
Make sure the MacBookPro1,1 is there at the end of the block. The block above represents the CPU throttling values. You'll notice that the integer values in the last block are 10 / 0 / 15 / 15
There are other similar blocks related to other machine types. The first block is for "M9ADP1,1". The MacBook Pro Block is the second big block.
The important line numbers are 129 and 131. So look there.
    Change those to:
    <dict>
    <key>DTC_WAB</key>
    <integer>10</integer>
    <key>DTC_WAT</key>
    <integer>0</integer>
    <key>GTC_WAB</key>
    <integer>0</integer>
    <key>GTC_WAT</key>
    <integer>5</integer>
    </dict>
    </array>
    <key>model</key>
    <string>MacBookPro1,1</string>
    So you have 10 / 0 / 0 / 5 in the integer values.
    10. Double check things and then save the file.
    11. Reboot to a no whine machine.
    12. Enjoy.
With this method the only change is to the throttling matrix retaining all the code of the kernel extension relating to the MBP otherwise.

    1. The other files pertain to other Mac types and not the MBP; I don't think they'd harm anything by being there but it's what I have and I just wanted to report my setup exactly and remove all other variables.
    2. If you look at the matrix, the first number appears to relate to overall processor load; so it gives parameters for various thresholds.
All the values above are identical X / 0 / 0 / 15; where X represents the processor load threshold.
When this matrix is assigned to the final ie. 10 level ie: 10 / 0 / 0 / 15 there is a very slight hiss still audible. Changing to the given values 10 / 0 / 0 / 5 eliminated all whine on my machine.
I agree it would be best to know what the values mean but I've just used my best deduction to work out this strategy.
    Regards.

  • Very simple: Does anyone with the 2.16GHz have the whine?

I'm starting to notice something. Of all of the users who are (rightfully) complaining about the whine problem, it seems that none of them are those with the 2.16GHz upgrade. I recently ordered my MacBook Pro (and therefore do not have it), but a quick glance over the forums affirms my suspicion.
I could be completely wrong; I didn't have the time to completely delve into the many "whine" threads, so this topic will solve this matter fairly quickly!

I Just recieved my 2.16GHz MBP today, and it does not have to LCD inverter buzz. I do however have a slight CPU whine but it is not terrible. Furthermore, I don't care much for notebook trackpads and am using a bluetooth mouse. The Mac Book is silent when the mouse is connected. I've read on these forums, that Apple knows of the CPU whine issue and a software update will be released. So far this is a very cool machine. I am calibrating the battery so I haven't tried out everything yet. By the way, I am using The MouseBT by Chwang Yi (formally MacMice) and I like it so far. I like that it's very similar to the Mighty Mouse which I use on my G4. Good Luck with your MacBook!

  • Conexant HD20672 SmartAudio CRITICAL Issues!

    Hi all
I discovered bugs while testing and writing a full guide to optimize sound with SmartAudio (Clean Install after clearing out Dolby + Windows High Definition driver). Tested out with 8.32.23.0 / 8.32.23.2.
The clips is under the attachment. The problem lies with the SmartEQ (probably 31Hz and 62Hz to be precise).
    1. When you change back to Default EQ from Custom, the power limiter seems to lost control. (e.g. In the attachment)
Pros: This shows the hidden potential of the powerful sound (output level), it was so loud (louder than any laptop i heared) when the bug occurs.
Cons: The sound was so distorted that it could possibly damaged the onboard sound card or / and the internal speakers.
    2. If you increase 31Hz and 62Hz band
Pros: The sound would be louder
Cons: The microphone quality would be very poor (eerie sound cames out)
Could anyone replicate this issues with any ThinkPads (X, T, W#20s/i/t) with Conexant HD20672 Sound Card? Currently, I am on hold for writing pdf guide for SmartAudio optimization. If it can't be fixed, I can't proceed any further. (hard to have great results with buggy drivers)
I apologize for any affected users that uses my Conexant tweaks under my old W520 Sound Enhancement Thread (Conexant part). I should have done more testing on the mic to be sure everything works perfectly. I would suggest users using Conexant to avoid using SmartEQ.
I am back to Dolby drivers for now. I would suggest next batch of ThinkPad changing to Realtek, IDT or even Creative for both quality and reliability purpose.
    Cheers

Yup, affects both input and output. From my findings, 31Hz and 62Hz on high level causes whine issues during Skype (causing poor quality). I am not sure why did it happened. This does not occur on any previous ThinkPads or ThinkPads with Dolby drivers.
By the way, are you all able to reproduce any of the following? I doubt it's hardware (onboard sound card) fault.
    Thanks
