No windows icon on alt/option start

I have a new imac 24' 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Leopard
Loaded Windows XP2 in boot camp, no problem
Set default startup disk to Mac OS
First couple of attempts holding alt/option at startup loaded two icons to pick between windows or mac
Now holding alt/option at startup goes directly to the Apple side 4 out of 5 times without showing two icons. After repeated attempts on shutdown, startup with power button holding alt/option key, the two icons will eventually present. This is going to be very annoying if I have to live with this...
In addition, switching between the two operating systems seems to require the os (on both platforms) to discover the wireless mouse and wireless keyboard each time.
Thanks for any help,
---Susan

I've not had this problem myself, so I can't be sure about a solution, but you could try changing the boot OS from Bootcamp Manager just before shutting down/restarting to switch OS's, so when you're in OSX and you want to go to Windows, just before restarting, change the default OS to Windows... Not a proper solution but that's all I can think that might help - temp solution.

  • No windows icon when using option on restart

I just installed Windows on my Macbook 10.5.3 using Bootcamp without any difficulty. However, on startup, while pressing the option button, the only choice I am given, is Macintosh HD. There is no Windows icon. It doesn't matter if I boot out of Windows or Leopard. The only way to change OS's is to let the computer boot up and then go into system--> startup disc and then restart. Any suggestions?

Did you ever get resolution? I'm having the same symptoms/results. My nano 3G won't charge anymore no matter what I use (portable charger, USB port on several different PC's...) I'm thinking this happens to many thousands of iPods. They are prone to early failure. Limited warranty. No user serviceable parts. And we just go out and buy the latest model to replace it.
I didn't even use mine that much. Maybe it's time to find a more reliable brand (heresy I know...).

  • I uninstalled bootcamp but when my MacBook Pro starts up, I still have to press "alt/option" when the screen goes grey. Otherwise, a black windows screen pops up. What am I doing wrong?

At one point in time, I believe I had attempted to install bootcamp on my MacBook Pro. My university support center said that I had to press "alt/option" when starting up everytime, otherwise it would be a black windows screen and I had no idea where to go from there. (So I never was able to fully utilize the Bootcamp application. Unfortunately, even after I uninstalled bootcamp, this is still happening. How do I fix this? Thank you.

You should have asked us and looked at 10 posts a week -- same as yours.
OS X: System Preferences: Startup Disk control panel
    Set and done!
x = Mac OS X on startup also
And no to needing to hit Option every time. Obviously they never actually booted and used Mac.
All it was is the startup parameter was saved and still set to look for a partition that does not exist and got lost.
ZAP PRAM is also helpful but you would still use Startup Disk.
About This Mac.... More... will also take you to control panels (why System Prefs if they are control panels? to be different?) as well as S.P. from the Dock

  • On my macbook pro i have to hold the alt/option button when starting up...

otherwise windows xp is the default hardrive that starts.....how to change the default hardrive at start up to be the mac? it's just getting annoying always having to hold the alt/option button at start up

    Hi brazzy3,
    Welcome to the forum.
You can set the default startup disk from within System Preferences in OSX. Simply fire up System Preferences, select Startup Disk then select the volume you want to startup from automatically.
Boot Camp Beta also installs a Startup Disk control panel that lets you set the default operating system when you’re running Windows XP.

Third-party NTFS software interferes with the Apple NTFS drivers, which control whether you can see the Bootcamp partition in the Startup Disk option. As a test, can you uninstall all third-party NTFS software and check System Preferences -> Startup Disk?

  • After install Windows 7 i can't find MacOS in bootcamp menu. And when i'm pressing alt at start I have just Windows OS. How to return to MacOS?

After install Win7 I can't find MacOS in bootcamp menu. And when i'm press alt at start I can watch just 1 OS. How to return to MacOS

Hmm, then it seems Windows is trying to use a video driver that doesn't work with the one in your Mac.
Try a safe mode start in Windows. Restart and boot to Windows. If you're doing that from the startup manager (holding down the Option key and choosing the Win 7 partition), select the Windows disk and immediately start pressing the F8 key. If the Mac is trying to boot to Windows right at a restart or startup, then start hitting F8 the instant the hardware chime bongs.
Rather than the normal Win 7 splash screen (which from the sounds of things, you're not even seeing that), you will get a DOS screen of boot options. Chose Safe Mode and continue. This will force Windows to use the bare bones video driver and you should get to a desktop you can see.
Now install the initial Boot Camp drivers.

    Guitar21,
your MacBook Pro has booted into its Recovery mode. From the OS X Utilities menu, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it get to the login screen now?

As a debugging step, try printing to the Adobe PDF printer. If that fails, repeat with print-to-file selected. Assuming the print succeeds, open the file in Distiller to complete the creation of the PDF. If you get the PDF, then check to see if AcroTray is properly working as a background task.

Yesterday i installed the firefox 6.0 on my windows 7 computer. When i double-click the mozilla icon, it doesn't start. I opened the task manager and noted that the process "firefox.exe" appears and desappear after 5 seconds. I tried to start mozilla in safe mode but the problem remains. The only way to use mozilla in my computer is restarting the windows in safe-mode. Last thing: i already tried to reinstall the program. Please help me!

I'm also using Windows 7 on a Lenovo U310 laptop.

  • Just installed windows 7 Ultimate using Boot Camp. Problem is when I chose to boot the windows partition, I get the windows icon on the sreen showing that it is starting, but few second after I get a black screen

Just installed windows 7 Ultimate using Boot Camp. Problem is when I choose to boot the windows partition, I get the windows icon on the screen showing that it is starting, but few second after, I get a blank screen. I suspect a driver (screen) issue, since I also installed Parallell using the boot camp partition and that works fine.
Do anybody out there has an ideal of what to do to solve this issue.
    Thanks

  • Windows 7 wont appear in start up options

    hi,
this problem is pretty specific to how i got here so hopefully someone can help.
long story short, my internal dvd drive is broken so i had to do various work arounds involveing vmware (because the mighty windows is alergic to externals or something). basically i got vmware fusion to run the win 7 disc on my boot camp partition and install there.
it all works fine in vmware, i installed all the drivers from the leopard's disc fine, and i can see the files on the partition in finder.
however, when trying to boot into windows by holding the option key. the only option i get is to boot leopard.
im thinking this has something to do with maybe something the boot camp assistant never got to install like bonjour or some EFI support or something.
    any ideas?
oh also: the win7 part is NTFS

Do you have Bootcamp drivers installed on the Windows side?

  • Macbook pro (retina) and photoshop - alt/option draggin art board not zooming or anchor mod tool

So I posted this in the apple forums... No response and it's been a couple days...
Anyon have any idea how to fix this?
I'm using the latest OSX, with the latest CC versions. I'm using a late model Macbook pro.
When I'm in photoshop and i use the alt/option key while using the pen tool, and I start to select and modify an anchorpoint, the artboard or file window starts to move.
Same for when I use the zoom tool.
Both tools switch to the appropriate modifier, pen to Anchor modifier, and zoom to zoom out  ( - ).
When I click or drag, they don't work. I think it's something to do with the ley bindings, but when I use my mac mini, i.e a desktop with full keyboard, I don't have this problem. It's seriously killing my productivity having to switch back and forth between the Pen tool and anchor modification tool. And lord knows the weird ways I have to deal with the zooming.
I'm using the track pad, a mouse, and a wacom. This issue is exhibited across all input devices.

Here is information on my upgrade from my previous work machine… which is a pc to the mac… as I also had/have a late 2008 macbook, which was actually good bait lol, was impressed by how it ran for an 2008 model of a computer..
    1)Lenovo Think Pad/idea pad (21/10/2011 - release date)
    £800
    Intel i3 CPU 2 cores/4 threads. 2.3 GHz
    Intel Intel® HD Graphics 3000 +
    Nvidia GeForce GT 520M
    RAM 8GB
Storage 500 GB (normal hard drive)
Heavy to carry with bad back from home and to the studio and back.
    New Machine:
    2)Apple Macbook Pro
    £1099
    (xx/10/2013 -release date)
    Intel i5 CPU 2 cores/4 threads. 2.6 GHz
    Intel® Iris™ Graphics 5100
    RAM 8GB
    Storage 512GB flash storage (SSD)
lighter than late 2008 Macbook and easier to carry...
The two old machines are still running and looked after them well, and giving them away as gifts… to those who don't have computers. I always worked with them on a desk surface, so they would not overheat when rendering still 3D artworks and animations, so it should last on average life span then...
