No Wine for me!!

When I try to run pacman -Sy wine it says that the package is not found in the database. I'm using Arch 64. This is weird never had this happen before using arch.

Distributions like Fedora/Suse chose to extend their 32-bit distribution to 64-bit by installing 64-bit libraries into /usr/lib64 and installing 32-bit libraries in /usr/lib while distributions like Debian chose to install only 64bit libraries. The 64-bit libraries are installed in /usr/lib and /usr/lib64 is a symlink to /usr/lib.
I'm just guessing though. Perhaps a 'pacman -Ql' would provide further info?

SuSE is used because they provide up-to-date binaries.

  • WINE for OS 10.4.3

I'm puzzled about whether WINE will run on my system 10.4.3. without a lot of additional hassle. A tax software company, Futuretax.ca, has referenced WINE for non-Windows users of their software. However, am reading conflicting info. on whether WINE runs only on Leopard. I don't want to spent lots of time on this, since doing the taxes is enough of a headache. Anyone with experience on WINE for OS 10.4.3?

There is a port of Wine for Tiger called WinTel and another called DarWine. There are several other emulators as well which are derivatives: IEmulator and GuestPC. Other options are Q and QEMUX. All can be found at VersionTracker or MacUpdate. There is also a G5 optimized version of Virtual PC 7.0.2 from Microsoft.
Note that PPC emulations of Windows are typically quite slow. Some of the above are shareware or commercial products.
A couple of the above have Intel compatible versions, but they are not really necessary because an Intel computer can boot directly into Windows XP or Vista using the Boot Camp Assistant in Leopard.

With the most current launcher, it hasn't worked for me, even with the latest version of WINE.  What i would suggest, is apply the patches manually,( put them into your main WoW folder, run them from either the file manager, or from command line, and let them install.  While this is tedious, you need to apply the in sequential order, otherwise you'll run into problems.  After you have all the patches applied, just run the game from wow.exe, and skip the launcher, you can change all necessary settings either from in the game, or from the config.wtf file.

I used sudo pacman -S wine. It said target not found. Is this not in the AUR or something? There is no download option from the wine website. I read some people were able to get Assassins creed to run normally with wine, so I wanted to try it out.

  • 32 bit color Wine for Diptrace

I've been running Diptrace in wine, and it works almost perfectly, but every time it opens it complains that it is not in 32 bit color. I'm getting some weird effects using either OpenGl or Direct3d, but not Windows GDI.  When stuff is moved around or the screen is zoomed, it stops, then jumps slightly. It's pretty annoying, and I was wondering if it was related to the 32 bit color. I'm not sure where to start with this, so anything you can provide will be helpful. I'm using Openbox with the open source intel drivers, and Diptrace is 64 bit on my wine. Thanks

Do any "real" 32 bit color systems actually exist? And, if so, which colour do they drop a bit from to get to 32? (3x11 = 33, 3x10=30) I see that according wiki even those that aren't 3x8 + 8 bits of extras are usually 3x10 + 2 bits of padding:
    +32-bit color+
+"32-bit color" is generally a misnomer in regard to display color depth. While actual 32-bit color at ten to eleven bits per channel produces over 4.2 billion distinct colors, the term “32-bit color” is most often a misuse referring to 24-bit color images with an additional eight bits of non-color data (I.E.: alpha, Z or bump data), or sometimes even to plain 24-bit data.+
+Systems using more than 24 bits in a 32-bit pixel for actual color data exist, but most of them opt for a 30-bit implementation with two bits of padding so that they can have an even 10 bits of color for each channel, similar to many HiColor systems.+
    (from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_depth)

  • [SOLVED] virtualbox or Wine for WinGames?

    Hi archers
I have read something about virtualisation and sth. about wine but can't deside what may the better solution for me.
    My box:                       x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3500+
My OS:                        archlinux 2.6.31  (what else?)
    What I want:
Everything I do, I doit with archlinux, also some games. But there are fine games running on theese Redmond's platform only.
    (I'm sure it's a bug, not a feature)
So should I run a VM with XP as guest or is Wine the better goal (poss. less administration?)
    Please gimme some knowledge.
    Thanks in advance.

Direct3D support under VirtualBox seems to need some stuff from Wine:

As such I don't know if there would be a difference.

  • Apple pls look here: Some "quick wins" for the next firmware release

    Hi!
First of all: Thank you, Apple, for Update 1.0.3! The most annoying bugs are fixed and the click wheel works better (but in my opinion the quick wheel of the iPod nano works still even better).
Please allow me to suggest a few "quick wins" you could easily (in my opinion) include in the next firmware release:
+ Please add an option to turn off that "screensaver" or to change the time until it turns on
The "screensaver" wouldn't be that bad when:
+ It would display "now playing" information in a large font (better readable than the normal "now playing" when the background light is off
+ The screensaver clock would display 24h format, when configured
    Best regards, Jens

It's a waste of time posting this here because it's a user to user forum and no-one from Apple (except maybe the forum moderators) will see it.
    Please use this link.

  • Is it safe (or even a good idea) to download Wine for Mac OSX? Windows apps on Mac

I've been considering "Wine" lately, it sounds great, but I don't know if its safe to download. Would it expose my computer to malware?
Even if it does work fine it seems very difficult to install.
Has anyone had any experience with Wine?
    Thanks!

It is a good idea only if the applications you want to run work in Wine. Not everything does so you are going to have to test it first.

  • SWAP?  CS3 Win for CS3 Mac

I have Adobe Creative Suite 3 Web Premium for Windows, and I recently moved over a Mac platform.  I am not in a position to upgrade as yet to CS4, so looking for someone who may be in the reverse situation who may want to swap a CS3 Mac for my CS3Win.
I purchased my version as a download, so basically all we need to exchange are serial numbers, or happy to zip up the files and place online for you to download if necessary.  I am happy to do same in reverse, or receive a boxed version if that is easier.
(Adobe only offers a cross platform exchange for current versions.)
Please respond here if you are interested, and we can make arrangements.

    > Why they announce me by mail to make update bios, if it's not necessary
Who knows what improvements the new BIOS supports from my knowledge Toshiba doesnt publish any details about the BIOS improvements
But again; its your choice you can update or not but you know that its risky so why to update it if nothing is wrong? Only to have a newest version?
Well buddy Ive got a 7 years old notebook and I have never updated the BIOS.
I know that a newer version is available but my notebook runs great and Ive got no troubles so why to do this? My opinion is; never change a running system. And I think its a great advice because since long time it has been working properly.

  • Browser like IE on Win for Mac

I use Outlook Web Access. Safari, Firefox etc show a very different look of OWA. Is there any browser on Mac that works just like IE on Windows ?

What, you mean one that supports all of Microsoft's bad coding habits?
I can only suggest IE for Mac but it may not work in Tiger - Download it from here and give it a go.

  • How do I compile Wine for my 64bit machine?

    Hello,
How would I go about doing that?

I had them installed before and just ran pacman -S base-devel to reinstall, here's the output of pacman -Qg base-devel:
    base-devel autoconf
    base-devel automake
    base-devel bin86
    base-devel bison
    base-devel ed
    base-devel fakeroot
    base-devel flex
    base-devel gcc
    base-devel libtool
    base-devel m4
    base-devel make
    base-devel patch
    base-devel pkg-config
I am still not able to complete the build. If it matters I also chrooted in with linux32 as a wrapper(If that's the correct term).
