Your best bet is Tom's book. The link in the initial post above was for the original edition, but there is also a later edition for Final Cut Express 2. It includes a DVD where Tom shows you the differences between iMovie and FCE. Ian's post points you to the home page for all of Tom's books.
The Apple training book (Weynand), while worthwhile, is imho more of a reference ... ditto regarding Lisa Brenneis' FCE for Mac OSX: Visual Quickstart Guide ... Tom's book will get you up & running much more quickly than either of those books.
I have also found Ken Stone's Website very very helpful.

Wonder why?

Thought I'd post here before fb. Does anyone else wonder why Verizon's plans do NOT include one that has unlimited minutes AND NO DATA?? We recently had to upgrade due to an illness in the family and were very sad to learn that although we do not have a smart phone and have never or will never use any data, we have to pay $30 more for the unlimited minutes and an amount of data? Whats up with that?

Hi boatnik - We certainly want to offer options to meet al lof our customers needs! The lowest plan option with unlimited talk and text on a Basic Phone is $70/month and includes 500MB of data to use if you choose. For $40/month we offer 700 minutes however text would have to be added at a separate cost. I hope that the benefits of our service will make the decision to stay easier.

As a novice computer user, I wonder why I'm often getting "white-out" (program/app/site I'm working in goes totally blank onscreen). This is when I'm Internet online. If it makes a difference, I'm working 99% of the time on battery, not AC, power. Some of the possibilities I'm guessing are: glitches in my Verizon FiOS Wi-Fi providership?; staying too long on a site that's waiting for me to finish and "Submit"?; computer hardware prob (yikes, I hope not! It's brand new). Any ideas out there?

When this 'white-out' occurs, is the display 100% white with no error message and no menu bar?
Does this occur when you are using Wi Fi or connected to the Internet via the Ethernet cable?

DVD from Tom Wolsky's "FCE 4 Editing Workshop" Book won't load

Greetings:
I recently purchased FCE and Tom Wolsky's "Final Cut Express 4 Editing Workshop" Book & DVD. When I put the DVD into my MacBook Pro, it sits for about 20 seconds, then gets ejected. The computer seems not to recognize the DVD. The DVD drive is otherwise functioning perfectly (for example, I used it to load the FCE application with no problem). I've tried restarting the computer and cleaning the (spotless) DVD. Anyone else have this problem, and can anyone suggest a solution? Thanks!

You should return the book to wherever you purchased it if the DVD is defective.

Tom Wolsky book?

Tom Wolsky's book on Final Cut Express 3.5 really helped me out a few years ago. Now I'm trying to learn FCP X (10.1.4). Final Cut Pro X Beyond the Basics, Advanced Techniques for Editors, looks to be beyond my skill level.
Final Cut Pro X for iMovie and Final Cut Express Users: Making the Creative Leap looks to be 3 years old on Amazon.
Is there a Tom Wolsky book similar to Final Cut Express HD 3.5 Editing Workshop for latest version of Final Cut Pro that I'm not finding? I seem to learn better with books, not as well with videos.

Zach, In any e-commerce site where you are in a financial transaction, do not hit "the button" twice. Often you will get charged twice.
To straighten out the erroneous purchase, contact iTunes Customer Service.

This standard oracle API fails with the error : TIMEZONE FOR 483 IS EITHER DISABLED OR INVALID
But we do have the Timezone record number 483 in Oracle.
If we run this query, we see UPGRADE_TZ_ID 483 assigned to Europe/Bratislava

Please let us know why it fails.

If this situation continues you should contact Apple, after all, you don't want to be thought of as taking advantage, I'm sure. That's why you raised it in the first place.

Unfrotunately, this sounds like a dead TC.
- also, the picture does NOT pick up the 2 airport expressess in the house that I used to extend the wirelass network on the previous TC
- there is no option to extend the wireless network
You need to reconfigure the Expresses to rejoin the TC's network via a factory reset.

(1) Firefox's built-in post-crash page has not been a real HTML page for a long time (for example, from the time of Firefox 22, see: [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/968212 Want to save LOTS of versions of "Restore Session.xht" from the "oops ..." page for later use]). If you had this working differently with Firefox 25, that might have been created by an extension.
You can check to see whether extensions are disabled or need an update on the Add-ons page. Either:
* Ctrl+Shift+a
* orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions. The disabled extensions cluster toward the bottom of the list. To poll for updates, use the "gear" button above the list and choose Check for Updates.
If you used the Reset feature (or Firefox automatically did a reset due to some problem during upgrading), you will need to reinstall missing extensions. The reset feature creates a folder on the desktop named Old Firefox Data. Do you have that folder? There may be data you can recover from it.
(2) There are many ways for history to get cleared, both internal to Firefox and external. Could you double-check your Privacy settings?

We've tried reactivating iMessage, deleting threads, and contacts but nothing seems to work. Has this happened to anyone else?

Restart both devices (press the HOME and power button until the Apple logo appears then releasae). If both devices have iMessage turned on and to send as SMS when iMessage is not available, the the green messages are indicative of iMessage not being available on one or both devices.

Why our Podcast has been blocked or deleted?

I'm sure you had this question here very often but I'm completly confused why our new Podcast got blocked because I exactly the same structure as I did on my old podcast which runs perfect in the iTunes Store!
Would be great if someone could take a look at it:

Everything works perfect for me after adding the podcast manually and it got also validated but Apple sent me a mail which told me the it got blocked.

It's not possible to say exactly why the Store has removed your podcast - this is a user-to-user forum and posters on here have no access to Apple staff.
However, your feed indicates that the episodes consist of a collection of presumably commercially issued recordings: the Store staff may well be concerned that you have not either obtained written permission from the copyright owners or a valid podcasting licence from a recognized authority - this would be a breach of copyright and would be sufficient to get you removed from the Store.

I would like to publicly thank a few members here (fox_m, Tom Wolsky, Luis Sequeira1) who were very helpful with my questions regarding a video file I worked on for 8 months. The project involved numerous Motion 5 and Final Cut Pro X effects and was my first time ever using the applications. Thank you very much for all the help and if you're sort've interested in seeing how it all turned out then let me know how I can point you to the uploaded YouTube video without violating any forum rules and such.

Do you mean installing an earlier version on the firewire drive (in the external hard drive?)? As 10.4 came in the mac out of the box I'd need to get the cd then do something along the line of what you advised this guy https://discussions.apple.com/message/9429239#9429239 ? I guess the alternative is to do what he did and stitch the 5 min chunks together... would there be problems later on with exporting and quicktime do you know? A lot of time to waste if it wouldn't be possible..... thanks for the help

Clarification on HD Export (pag 319 of the book of Tom Wolsky)

At pag 319 of the book "Final Cut Express 4 - Editing Workshop" of Tom Wolsky, is written the option to export to an MPEG-4 file with data rate of 18000 Mbps. Is it correct or should it be 18000 Kbps?

I have a mac mini connected via HDMI to my TV and via WiFi to the Synology NAS where I store my home videos. Exporting to QT the WiFi home network is not powerful enough to stream to the mac mini and to the other wireless devices (Iphone and Ipad). So I'm struggling in finding the right exporting method to have the best quality.
Have you got other recommendations than exporting using the third otpion described in your book?
