No WWAN antena
Dear all
I bought recently new T400 notebook (product number 2765-51G). According to lenovo page, this notebook is WWAN upgradable. I have SIM card reader integrated, free PCIe slot for WWAN card, but I don't have antena cables (red and blue). I was not able to find proper contact email for the Slovakia support, so I'm giving a first shot here. I don't know, what to do now. I want to set a WWAN connection to the mobile operator in at last in three months, thats the time a have to resolve this issue. PCI-express card 3G modem is not solution, in that slot will be a SMART card reader soon.
Thank's

Hi popo666, that technician is mistaken. I suggest you try again. Below is some information which may help you. Ask for a supervisor if you still have problems. Come back here and tell us how you do!
1. The meaning of "WWAN Upgradeable" or "WWAN Ready" is clearly defined on Lenovo's web site:
Wireless WWAN Ready
The Wireless WWAN Ready selection is the
option of choice for anyone who may already have an activated PCI
mobile broadband card. As well, anyone who may activate and install a
PCI at a later time, may want to consider this option. With the
exception of the provider card, all of the hardware needed for a
wireless wide area network will be included in the machine.
Please note, the Wireless WWAN Ready option is only available with select machines.
2. Your T400 2765-51G is clearly listed as "WWAN Upgradeable" on the Lenovo website.
3. The T400 datasheet says:
All T Series models are Wireless WAN (WWAN) ready.

Dear Thinkpad Community, i just purchased a Thinkpad Yoga 15 and the Sierra WWAN module. As i saw some Yoga 15 with WWAN in stores, and read that this WWAN module is suitable for Thinkpad Yoga, i assumed an WWAN antenna to be preinstalled which is not the case!
As the module works and the SIM card is properly read, its only the antenna that is missing.
Does anybody know where to get the antenna that is installed in the Yoga 15 that comes with WWAN?
Does anybody know the part number/name of the antenna?
Cheers,
SpringaGood day and welcome to the community.
The best reference I can find for the FRU P/N for a WWAN antenna is the FRU BOM:
https://download.lenovo.com/parts/ThinkPad/tp_yoga15_frubom_20150106.pdf
You may be able to use the P/N to search for a source. Normally, I would recommend the maintenance parts site:
http://www-304.ibm.com/shop/americas/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/default/PromotionDisplay?promoName=parts_r&catalogId=-840&storeId=260785&langId=-1
but it's not returning any hits on the P/N.
Another reference you should look through, if you haven't already, is your hardware manual:
https://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/thinkpad_yoga_15_hmm_en_sp40g75956_01.pdf
Starting on page 89 you'll see what's involved at installing the antenna. Basically, you'd need to tear down most of the LCD/lid assembly, so you should consider your comfort level with a task of this sort before committing to it.
Hope this helps a bit.

Hi, I have purchased a T400 with WWAN antenna.
I cannot get the antenna indicator to light up.
I have switched the power on via the F5 menu, and have insert a sim in the slot at the battery area.
does anyone know what i should do now?Correct , wwan antena and SIM box is in standard, but wwan card is optional, you probably do NOT have it in the laptop. It is easy, check BIOS, if it is not disabled, if it is enabled, check Device Managaer, if wwan is inside, it has to be for example in list of network adapters. If its not there, wwan card is not in your laptop. Physically youcan check it, if you remove plastic cover on the bottom of the laptop.

I have a simple question since I'm planning to buy a new thinkpad t440p
Does all models have a WWAN connection ?
Resellers in my Country doesn't give any custimization options and when I've been to the shop to get it they only said that there is a sim slot under the battery does this mean that I can use mobile data as soon as I get it or what ?
in the device manage I opened network adapters and I found the following list

Intel ethernet connection i217-lm
there is another PCI simple communication controller unidentified device
the laptop has

T440p laptops do not all come with a WWAN card installed. Most - but not all - have WWAN antennas installed but may or may not have a card. The SIM slot is always there as it's part of the generic T440p case.
The PSREF page may help you figure this out if you can find your MT-M (machine type-model). Otherwise post your MT-M here and someone may be able to track down the exact specs.

Ideapad S12: Get WWAN started with Dell 5530 Card
Hello there,
I bought an ideapad S12 (Intel Atom 1,6 GHZ, NVidia ION 256 MB, 2 GB RAM). So far so good until I detect that indeed there is a sim card slot, but no internal wwwan card built in. Didn't matter anyway, the kind lady at the lenovo hotline told me, that I have to buy the Ericsson f3507g-Card.
I thought to be very clever and bought me the identical Dell 5530 WWAN card at only a fraction of the price. After hours and hours reading installation advices in several forums I was able to install the dell drivers onto my netbook and after deactivating the pin query on my sim card, the card is also detected by the data manager from my provider (3datamanager at www.drei.at).
And (finally) here comes my question: are there additional antennas for WWAN in the netbook? If no, I likely have to buy an antenna and screw it into my (yet) maiden netbook ;-) Has anyone experience with assembling WWAN antennas in S12-netbooks? Which model should I use and where should I put it?
Thanks in advance

Can we upgrade our X300 6478-1TU with open-line 3G/HSPDA modem?
I bought a Lenovo Thinkpad x300 (6478-1TU) in US and want to upgrade it with an embedded Sierra Wireless MC8775 PCI Express Mini Card specified in Lenovo's Hardware Manual which is compatible with the 3G GSM service provider system where I am based, in the Philippines.
I emailed Sierra Wireless to purchase this product but this is their reply:
Thank you for your inquiry. Please note that our MC PCI express line of mini cards are embedded modules that are only available for integration into hardware applications, they are not available for end user purchases. The MC cards we offer are not finished products, therefore cannot be put into regular PCI card slots.
In addition, all embedded slots on Laptops have a proprietary BIOS and cannot be re-provisioned by consumer, thus these would not work in your unit. My suggestion is that you contact your Laptop manufacturer for alternate solutions.
This is very disappointing since I bought this laptop assuming the SIM Card slot by the battery can be used and just had to be upgraded by a 3G modem like the MC8775. I did not order the customized ones offered optional under Verizon or Cingular because these are locked to the respective providers only.
I am in the Philippines and want an open line modem for flexibility when travelling abroad.
From the parts list:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-69373.html
The location of the MC8775 (number 3) should be on the opposite side of the Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN (number 6) - Installation is back to back, I guess this is difficult to install but possible to do.
Is it true about the BIOS? Isnt there any BIOS upgrade or only a driver installation needed?
Can Lenovo assist us with this upgrade? I am willing to send my laptop to China, Siongapore or Hongkong or back to US if my laptop can have this embedded mini card.
Solved!
Go to Solution.Lenovo has some awesome videos here which show you how to install parts. The hardware manual is also a very useful resource. The WWAN card is one of the easier to get at... but don't forget about the antenna! I have no idea what antenna is pre-installed in your system. If you remove the keyboard, as in the videos, you should see your WWAN slot and any pre-installed antenna. If there is a WWAN antenna there, you are golden. It is possible to retrofit an antenna, but it is tricky. The LCD disassembly/reassembly video shows it.
The only guaranteed way to get WWAN would be to find a way to get Lenovo to do it. Doing it yourself, you take some risks. Your warranty becomes void. You may have problems with the installation. It may or may not work in the end.
Lastly, for everyone else reading this thread bananaman's WWAN rule:
If there is even just a tiny chance that you will ever use it, order your ThinkPad with WWAN factory-installed!
The incremental cost is only about +/-$100, depending on the model. In the current ThinkPad models, Retrofitting WWAN is not easy, not cheap, and risky.
That said, maybe someone out there who has actually done the retrofit can chime in with some advice...

Mobile Broadband Unit not found for T400 WAN
Hello,
I've got a Lenovo T400 27658JG with Win 7 64bit and I try to activate my Mobile Broadband Unit.
I've loaded down the driver: Lenovo Mobile Broadband Version 3.5.0011 and the ericson and AT&T driver (which worked properly on XP)
When i'm launching the exe I got the following message:

WWAN option means that it has the SIM card reader and WWAN antennas fitted but there is no WWAN card fitted, so that is why the Mobile Broadband Unit is not being found!

It's time to regale you all again with my overly-annoying basic questions!
according to Lenovo, my T500 is 'Mobile broadband ready'. Does this mean I can shove in any WWAN card and expect it to work? Or will only the Lenovo-supplied cards (like the ones for sale in the online store) work? Does the antenna come pre-installed?
Thanks.
CJThe WWAN antennas are pre-installed in a 'Mobile broadband ready' ThinkPad, and you will definitely need to use a Lenovo supplied WWAN card.
I can personally confirm that the Ericsson WWAN card available through the Lenovo Australia web site does work well in a T400 2764CTO with the Telstra Mobile Broadband Next G service (note this is NOT the Bigpond Next G service).
Cheers,
Bill

Select the card you need (it depends of the area where you are) and p/n (FRU). For almost worldwide carriers Gobi 2000 is good choice, in European netwoкs Ericsson F3507 will work too.
Modern external 3g/lte/wifi routers are the best choice if you need the capability of LTE FDD/TDD networks.
UPD
Be sure your laptop is wwan ready i.e.has sim reader and wwan antennas.

The information I need is size & weight comparison. I don't want a hefty machine. The pictures I saw of the T510 and W510 makes me think that the W510 is heftier. I hadn't seen any of these machines in person. I am replacing an old T43p which just died. Can someone help me with size & weight comparison between the two machines? I will use this machine primarly at home.@ColonelONeill: Something I really wonder is what is the point in offering PC3-10600 optional RAM upgrades for the W510 (and charging the customers more for it, since it makes them think they're paying for higher RAM speeds), if intel’s QM57 chipset can’t support any higher memory speeds than the 1066MHz found on the PC3-8500 types? Don’t tell me the max memory bandwidth is driven by the processor (ix-xxxM or ix-xxxQM) type! Cause then I could pop a PC3-10600 RAM type in a T410 and expect it to run at 1333MHz (given if I have upgraded the processor to the QM series already)!?
@pcot: The main practical difference between the models you mention to my opinion are 3;
The battery lifetime difference. With the W510 9 cell battery you are looking at 4 to 5 hours max where some reviews point even more towards 3 hours if only browsing. It is mainly due to the power hungry QM processor (max 45 watts) and FX880 graphics processor! While the T510 can run much longer with the same 9 cell battery due to lower processor power draw (max 35 watts) and intelligent energy efficient OPTIMUS feature (only specific models) switching from discrete to integrated GPU depending on what you doing.
The option of upgrading the W510 up to 16GB RAM, while T510 can go 8GB RAM max.
The USB 3.0 port on the W510 where the T510 (while containing the same intel QM57 chipset) unfortunately for no logical reason doesn't offer that. -
Mobile Internet - How to make it work? (X1 Carbon)
Hello all
so I got here a Carbon X1 with a 3G card.
However, after installing the latest driver from the lenovo website, the card is not listed in my hardware manager on Windows 8 and when clicking the Internet Access icon on the taskbar only the Wifi networks are shown.
Any help on this matter? Do I need additional software?
I have Windows 8 x64 and the SIM Card from Belgium.
Thanks!ThomasVanhoutte,
Lenovo' the parts lookup service output isn't very informative (compare with this one http://www-947.ibm.com/support/entry/portal/wlup), but as you see - 3g card is absent in your laptop.
In order to get 3g in your laptop you also should be sure your laptop is "wwan ready" i.e.has wwan antennas (unfortunately not all x1c laptops have that). Ask Lenovo' support or look at laptop invoice/order. But the best way - do it yourself. You should remove some details (screws and keyboard) and find out antenna wires, red and blue.
Look at X1C Service Training Course http://service.lenovo.partner-management.com/content/CourseWarePublic/14261/player.html and find out the sequence for access to 3g wwan card under FRU videos item. Do not forget unplug power cable and disable the battery in BIOS setup! All you need then remove sim card, 7 screws and keyboard bezel.
If you'll find wwan antennas be sure the wwan slot is half sized (as it is on training video) and just purchase 3g card. Presently X1C supports the only one half size 3g wwan card - Ericsson h5321w, FRU 60Y3297. You can purchase that in Lenovo' shop but the price is a bit expensive. So do it on another sites. Do not buy even the same card but with another part number. Another cards will not work in X1C.
I'll be surprised if your X1C will have new hw revision and wwan slot will be full size. In this case you'll have new choices for 3g wwan card selection.
Note according to Lenovo there are no Customer Replaceable Units (CRU) in X1C except for power supply. That means all manipulations I've described above should be done in service center only. As for me I don't understand why it is so in new line laptop models (to be exact I know but it's not for discussion here). So do it just carefully, do not destroy the parts of laptop and you'll not lose a warranty.

SIM Slot.. what is it for?
I just bought a new ThinkPad T450s. There is a SIM card slot at the right. What exactly is it for? If I pop in a SIM card, will I be able to use my laptop with it.. without Wifi?
Hi
If your laptop has wwan card (wwan modem 3g or 3g+LTE) installed, you'll get mobile broadband internet access capabilities. If wwan modem isn't factory preinstalled, but laptop is "wwan ready" (i.e.has sim reader and internal wwan antennas), you can purchase and install Lenovo approved wwan cards for t450s yourself.
WWAN acces capabilities don't relate to wifi, both network adapters can work simultaneously.
To specify exact configuration you should provide laptop MTM (Machine-Type-Model). -
