Noise from router on phone line

I just got my DSL from Verizon activated today, the router connects fine, and I have my DSL filters in place, but I am getting this 'snow' sort of noise on the phone line when my router is turned on.
Also, when you turn the router on when listening to the phone, you hear some beeping electronic sounds when the router is trying to connect.

What you're hearing as far as the Electronic Noises on the line is normal for many lines (like little beeping sounds), but they should only be pretty faint even on the loudest of Corded phones. That should only happen during synchronization. The additional chatter or noise you hear on the line once the modem has trained should not be present, so you may either require an additional filter on each affected phone (Some devices such as Call Switches do require them) or there may be a degraded cable somewhere presenting the higher frequency noise as a tone closer to what can be heard over the phone, or Transmit Powers could be rather high.
Some older lines in my area that have started to wear out exhibit white noise or electronic noise on the cabling just by nature. Newer cabling such as the ones I go through don't exhibit the white noise while DSL is running. if the noise is irritating and can be heard on the other end of the call as well, I'd certainly:
Check other phones
Check Filters
Try adding further filters
Analyze home wiring for any corrosion, lose connections, and dirty jacks.
Consider testing both phone and modem at your NID to see if this shows a lessened effect of what you're hearing. A line splitter will be needed for this as well as a corded phone.
Perhaps have Verizon run an MLT Test on your line to see if they can spot any highly resistive shorts through the test itself. (If found, tech gets dispatched to find it and fix it).
Consider a Home Run.
I have seen some very isolated issues where another type of DSL filter is needed, mainly on ADSL2+ lines. Might also be something to consider, getting a home run installed for your modem.

  • Phone Line Across The Street Has Branches On It

Whom should I contact to get some branches removed from a Verizon phone line across the street? I don't think it's a hazard, but something will give sooner or later. I'm not a Verizon customer, so I can't easily access anyone online. And it seems all local businesses are Verizon Wireless. Thanks!

Verizon doesn't do tree trimming, so depends on where the tree is at, and who's responsibility it is.  If it's on your property, then you take care of it, if it's on a neighbors property, they take care of it.   Sometimes the city is responsible.   so it depends.

  • Australia, Telstra phone lines: How to fix clicks/noise from phone line?

This is probably the wrong forum to post my question, but I hope that some Australian HP users might have a solution to my problem, which is:
My HP7410 emits noise - scratches, clicks, & so on, which I assume is phone line noise - which can be very loud especially at 2am - 3am.
I've set the volume control to "off", but the noise is still just as loud as ever.
The noise doesn't seem to be affected by anything I can find; it's not WiFi transmitter activity, not time of day....nothing I can find.
5 years ago I tried to get our phone provider, Telstra, to investigate & fix the problem but the tech reckoned there was nothing wrong (typical). So there seems no reason to put the problem to them: as far as I can see, they will profess to be concerned but not responsible for the hash noises.
How can I get rid of it? Does anyone have any solutions?

    Hi @bowhand,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I see that you are getting noise - scratches, clicks, and so on with your HP 7410 printer. I am happy to look into this for you!
    Some questions for you:
Do you have the phone line connected to the printer, or just the fax line?
Do you know if your phone service is Analog or Digital?
If the printer is powered off, does the noise still occur with the phone lines connected?
Once I know this information, I will be happy to do some further research!

  • New phone line and broadband, massive noise margin...

Hi, being a long time DSL stalwart a recent move to a new property has meant I've needed to switch over to ADSL instead and thus far it's proving to be a bit of a mare!
I waited a month for the initial installation engineer who promptly never showed anyway, no bother I thought, the hub turned up and I installed it myself and it promptly didn't work   It soon became pretty apparent that the phone line was completely dead even from the test socket.  A few phone calls later and the phone line is working much to my delight.  The broadband is another story though, initially it still couldn't connect but later in the day it managed to get going.  However it's excruciatingly slow with an average of 20 to 30kps throughput and substantial packetloss.  Also worth noting is that in this new property, only the master socket actually works, this place has 4 other sockets dotted around all of which appear to be dead, could these be part of the issue?  Does using the test socket completely cut these out and rule out bad wiring?  Just to add, at 13 hours connected the adsl status is pretty much the same and I couldn't notice anything on the BT line noise test number.
I'm not familar with the workings on ADSL lines but I'm guessing the root of the problem is down to a wildly varying noise margin both up and down.  Down fluctuates between ~2 and 20 within a matter of seconds and up gives some numbers that defy belief.  Now the line was originally activated on Wednesday, actually kicked into life sometime on Friday and the router has been connected for 13 hours now, whilst it's still early days and things should bed in more, I assume I'm right in thinking I should be alarmed at how bad a line I'm starting out with?  And should I be directing my ire at the builders or BT?
Any help and suggestions will be hugely appreciated!
    Cheers!

as it is a newbuild is the master socket inside your home or outside like this
connecting to the test socket will eliminate all your extension sockets and should be your best connection.  if you are not in the test socket could you try it and post new stats please
with your attenuation I would expect a connection speed of about 18mb when you get this fiixed

  • ADSL problems - Slow - Noise on phone line

Hi, Im hoping someone can help me with Broadband issues I've been having. Ill try and describe the salient points without turning into a rant. Suffice to say Ive had a torrid time over 2 weeks, spending hours on the phone to maybe 15+ different call centre staff and relaying information back and forth between them and 3 different engineers.
Ive recently moved house and about a month before the move I arranged for an 8Mb ADSL connection to be ready for me when we moved in. I was assured that I would definitely have service on this date which was important to me as I am a self employed web designer and rely on an internet connection for my work.
We moved on 11th this month, I plugged the router in and it couldn't connect (orange/purple flashing light on HomeHub 3). After talking to various people at the BT Broadband call centre over a period of a few days, going through basic troubleshooting numerous times it was eventually decided that an engineer be sent. He found the problem relatively quickly, the exchange hadn't been set up for my connection. He set up the connection at the exchange and left with me being able to connect.
I quickly realised that the speeds were very slow (around 0.7Mbps). I left it for 24hrs but no improvement. It also worried me was that I could hear noise on the phone line. The noise is only there when the broad band is connected, a steady fuzzy static. You can also hear the modem on the router dial occasionally like the old school dial up connections. I again phoned the call centre, again went through basic trouble shooting (plugging directly into test socket, different filters, connect computer into router via cable and not wifi etc etc….), and again eventually got another engineer sent.
The new engineer changed my Home Hub 3 for a Home Hub 4, decided nothing else could be wrong at the house end so went to the exchange. He phoned from the exchange explaining that he had sorted the problem (I can’t remember what he said he did as it was beyond my understanding). I was suspicious that the situation hadn’t been resolved though because I still had noise on the line and 24 hrs later I also had my connection drop to 0.13Mbps.
More phoning to call centre folk and eventually engineer no.3 was sent. I have to say he seemed very thorough, changed the master socket (which he told me the previous 2 engineers should have done) and spent a long time doing various tests. It seemed the problem was fixed since after changing the socket there was no noise on the line. The connection eventually recovered after an SNR and IP profile reset to about 2.5Mbps.
The next day though there was again noise on the line. Some crackles at first but later turning into the constant fuzzy noise that I was hearing before. The speed steadily deteriorated everytime the router was re-synching during training and is now 0.97Mbs and I guess on its way down further since the noise is now quite loud. The engineer was kind enough to ring back to check up on the case and when he heard the issue he insisted that it was almost certainly a phone line fault and that I should call 151 to arrange for someone to come out.
Ive spent today being passed to and fro between the phone line department and the broadband department. The broadband department also tell me they think the phone line department should deal with the issue but then the phone line department say there is no problem when they do a remote test so pass me back to the Broadband department. Eventually after speaking to 5 different people today it has been decided that I should have my 4th Broadband Engineer visit me on Monday.
To my limited knowledge and reading on these forums it seems the issue is likely to be a line fault, so it’s frustrating that it’s possible the wrong person might be being sent and the problem will continue.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, as I mention the connection is very important to me.
ADSL Line stats from my Home Hub 4:
Connected Connection time: 0 days, 03:00:05
    Downstream: 1.313 Mbps
    Upstream: 448 Kbps
    BTWholesale Speedtest:
Download speed achieved during the test was - 0.96 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 0.2 Mbps-1 Mbps.
    Additional Information:
    Your DSL Connection Rate :1.34 Mbps(DOWN-STREAM), 0.45 Mbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 1 Mbps

Obviously you need to get rid of the line noise problem before your internet connection will improve. Normally the advice is to phone 151 and report a phone fault with no mention of broadband. You really now need to wait until monday to see if this engineer visit solves your noise problem
if after the engineer visit there is no improvement then the mods may be able to help
as this is a residential line and is not supposed to be used for business purposes maybe you should consider a business line which gives a better service contract especially as you are self employed

  • Route partition on phone line

    Hello,
We have cucm version 8 what is the reason for the option route partition under line. The reason I ask this if I have no css for line and device but I have assing a partition under router partition under line nothing happens cannot call no where until i assing a css under line or device. So what the point for route partition.  Even if I assign the same partition under route partition to another dn partition I cannot dial that dn in the same partition.  I feel the route partition is useless or is it?
    Thanks,

Jaime is spot on (+5 J.). It would be a really good idea if you would take a couple of hours to go through the SRND. It is kinda heavy so you may need to iterate through it a couple of times. In regards to Route Partitions (Partitions) and Calling Search Spaces (CSS) try to think of a partition as a collection of patterns and a CSS as a collection of partitions.
The partition of "<none>" is special. It basically says that this pattern (whatever the pattern is: Directory Number, Translation, Route Pattern, etc.) is part of every CSS. Think of "<none>" as default for the time being.
The CSS of "<none>" is exactly what it says "none". As in there is no CSS. As in the only partition in the collection the "<none>" or default partition. This is why you can put a phone number on two phones, not assign a partition or CSS, and make calls. This is not a proper design, even if the calls work.
When you put your Directory Number (DN) in a partition (e.g. MyPhones_PT) you have removed the pattern from the <none> partition. Since the <none> CSS does not visibility of MyPhones_PT, you can't call the phone. This is operating as expected.
There are other rules around patterns/partitions/CSS relationships. No sense in digging into that here. However, this relationship is far from useless. It is core to the whole digit analysis process.

  • New Wireless Router Shut Down the Phone Line

Just to clarify, I'm not the homeowner or the billpayer at the address that this post concerns. The home and phone belong to a relative who isn't particularly experienced in this sort of thing. She relative is away for the next two weeks, and I promised to try and figure out what was the problem.
A landline fault notice has been filed with BT, but I've been informed that they might not be able to make it out here until this coming Wednesday, so it would be convenient if I could troubleshoot it from my end and safe the technicians a trip.
My information on the issue is limited, having only briefly spoken with the relative about it. As I understand it, she upgraded her wireless broadband with Orange in order to attain speeds of 14MB and to have an unlimited data allowance. Upon recieving the new wireless router, she removed the previous one and correctly wired in the new one. Immediately after this, the landline and internet ceased to work. I've spent the last hour poking around and trying different phone ports in the house to no avail. The phones all say 'Check Phone Line'.
This is all extremely puzzling. I have no idea why plugging in a new router would cause the phone line to shut down. Does anyone have any insight into what might have caused this?

I just went up to the 'main box' in the attic and plugged in an older phone. The line was still dead, which I guess means that whatever happened when the modem was plugged in happened outside the buildings.
Did you unplug the modem when you did the test in the main box?

  • Why do I have to move my phone line from Sky to BT...

I have just spent the last 14 days trying to move my broad band from BT to Sky, I was told by Sky that I have to have a new phone number and as I was getting loads of unwanted phone call I thought that it would be a good Idea.  So any way I ordered a new number and broadband with sky.
Any way to cut a 14 day long story short, Sky cannot provide me with Broadband due to incompatible technology, so I really do not have any other option other than to come back to helpful BT.  Just phone BT up to order my BB to be told that they cannot help me unless I move my phone number back to BT..........
When questioned about this I was told that "I have to have both phone line and Broadband with BT"......... NO I DO NOT, in February 2012 I moved my phone line to Sky and my Broadband staied with BT, as there was a problem switching it over, little did I know then what I know now.
So could someone from BT 'in the know' please tell me why I have to move my phone line back to BT

    sorry mate.
Hadn't heard about TPON lines before today.
Doing a quick google search, found this:
"TPON stands for Telephony over Passive Optical Network
TPON was a method used by BT (now Openreach) mainly in the 1980s and early 1990s to deliver phone lines to new build areas where there wasn't enough existing copper capacity available. This decision was made before ADSL was envisaged, and as ADSL requires a copper pair route between customer and exchange, this means customers in TPON areas are currently unable to receive ADSL."
    Hope all is sorted soon.
    Cheers

  • Migrating phone line and broadband from BE to BT i...

Hi everyone, i ordered BT infinity 2 online on Friday , order went through with out any issues got the date for engineer visit on 14th of JUNE but since that my order is pending and i don't know the reason why and my account hasn't been created as well.
My phone line and broadband currently both with BE unlimited and somebody from BT told me that if i am migrating phone line from another provider then i can't order BT infinity 2 straight away, first i have to transfer my phone line over to BT and then i can order BT infinity 2. Can any body tell me if this is true.
I had excellent experience with BE unlimited for last 5 years and hoping that it carries on with BT as well but things so far not looking promising because i can't get straight answer from BT reps.
Any help in this matter will be much appreciated in advance.

OK i have update regarding my order, i spoke to BT rep today and she told me the reason my order is till pending because  first i have to transfer my  phone line over to BT then i can order BT infinity 2. The date they give me for my phone line to switch over to BT is 15th of June and once that completed then some one from BT infinity 2 Team will contact me and arrange a date for BT engineer.
So any one thinking about moving to BT infinity 2 in near future and currently they have their phone line and broadband both with different company then they should move their phone line to BT straight away and once phone line is moved over to BT then they can order BT infinity 2 with out any problems.
I hope this will help lot of other people who are in similar situation.

  • Signal, noise and rate data from router?

I understand how to interpret signal and noise from a previous posting (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7190784&#7190784), however, I am not clear as to what the rate data means (this data can be obtained by clicking on Wireless Clients in the Summary Tab of Airport in the Airport Utility)? Can anyone enlighten me.
    Thanks
    Tony

There are two measures used (& sometimes mixed up) when it comes to wireless network speed. They are: bandwidth & throughput (data transfer rate).
Both are measured in MBps or Mbps (Megabytes vs Megabits per second). Bandwidth is the maximum speed the wireless media can carry. Obviously the higher the bandwidth the greater the speed that can be obtained. The 802.11 standards typically are stated in bandwidth. For example, 802.11g has a bandwidth of 54 Mbps; 802.11n has a range between 150 & 300 Mbps, depending on which radio band (2.4 or 5 GHz) is being used.
The other measure, throughput, is the more "realistic" measure as it takes into account the effects of RF properties and Wi-Fi interference in the real world.
Think of bandwidth as a road. 802.11b would be a rural route, 802.11g a city highway, and 802.11n, the AutoBahn. Now think of throughput as the impact of the number of vehicles on any of those roads and the current road conditions. Just because you can drive a Porsche on the AutoBahn at its maximum speed, doesn't mean it will be able to obtain it.
Long story, short, the "rate data" values you see in the AirPort Utility reflect throughput speeds.

It will cost you to add a line.  The test jack might work.  I was actually unhappy to see that when they replaced my BPON ONT with a GPON ONT that it went from have conventially modular jacks to having wire posts for the phone line.
    Choices inlude.
    paying verizon to run wire
trying to wire to the ont yourself
putting a spliter/adapter somewhere on the existing wire to your new location
    trying the test jack.
