Noise in images

How do I eliminate (or at least reduce) the amount of noise in images?

You might want to take a look at noise-reduction software. Some of these are described at http://forums.adobe.com/message/2368771.
I particular, in msg#5 I give some before-after examples.

  • How to remove noise on images acquire from Digital 8 VCR to PCI-1409 frame grabber ?

I have some constant noise in the form of a discontinuous white horizontal line running accross the top of images which were grabbed from a digital 8 video signal. I have tried all the settings in MAX to remove these and have check the integrity of my connections, but to no avail ?

    Kyle,
I found that adjusting the acqu window did the trick.
It seems that all the video i have on Digital 8 tapes gives me the same problem. When i use the camera directly to the frame grabber there is no problem.
In due course i'll try another camera with the Dig 8 VCR and compare these output picture quality.
    Thanks for the advice,

  • Problem adding noise to image

Hi, did anyone know how to adding noise to the image using java. Actually I applying filtering function to my program, so I think, it's better to make automated function to add any kind of noise to the image.
Please let me know if anyone know how to do it.

    Hi
I would like to add Gaussian Noise and Salt & Pepper Noise to the image. For example, I have one JPEG image. After I load the image, I can add any of this two noise to the image using button or something like that. With doing this, I don't need to search any other image with noise to run my program. Can you help me?

Are there any tricks (or plug-ins) to eliminate noise on images that are keyed into green screen scenes? I'm getting some noise on dark suit jackets.

I have the same problem with green screen, I usually just go to video settings and change the white point to something orange/yellow

  • LR 1.2 ISO Noise filter good enough?

I read that noise reduction algorithm in LR version 1.2 has been upgraded with respect to the previous one. Downloaded 1.2 just now, coming back home from a long travel abroad, so I had no time to test.
Shot a Jazz concert last night. ISO 1600 in RAW with my Olympus E-300 (I know it is severely limited in ISO noise performance!), and had to accept underexposure in many pics, in order to get shutter speed fast enough.
    The question is:
Under these challenging conditions, should I manage to deal with ISO noise through filtration in LR, or should I better run:
    1. export to external editor (Photoshop CS)
    2. run 3rd party NR plugin (Neat Image 5.8 Pro+)
    3. reimport to LR for further processing steps.
In the latter case, it is better to leave LR Color and Luminance Noise filter parameter to defaul values, or zero everything, or set the sliders for the best possible noise suppression / image sharpness compromise?
I know, I shoud better experiment myself... but I am hard-pressed by the client asking pro-grade prints within minutes, so your help will be highly appreciated.
    Best regards.
    Andres Bernhard AKA 'Rapick'

Well, your example shows exactly why I think LR needs a lot of improvement. I surely hope that the LR-engineers take a good look at this.
The LR image has horrible NR/sharpening. Just look at the lady's hair (please forgive me my bad English - I mean the 'massive' part, not the individual hairs at the side of her face). Flat structure, strange colors, less detail than both DPP-pictures. Look at the skin on her cheek - oversharpened, unnatural colors (compared to the DPP-pictures). And the crown is heavily oversharpened in the LR-version (I would have been much more conservative here).
DPP-max clearly has the most noise, but produces by far the most natural picture. If this shows the philosophies of both Canon and Adobe, I would say Canon DPP + Noiseware is my best bet (natural and not too processed versus artificial/overprocessed), result-wise.
But I want LR to be that great converter. Dismissing other products than LR as useless doesn't help to improve LR, especially the parts where it should be far better. I don't buy the specialist-tool argument either. LR IS(!) a specialist tool and it is marketed that way. We should expect a flawless RAW-conversion from LR, no second-best solution. So instead of defending LR again and again, let's only define what should improve and how it should be done. This what I miss most in this forum. I think the developers should be visible here and discuss their choices. That would benefit them and us...
I like the way LR is designed and I like the idea how Adobe has managed to integrate the workflow. That's why I'm still sticking to it. Let's hope they bring out the LR-API soon, so we can use Noiseware (amd our own tools) within the LR-workflow...
    Cheers,
    Alex

  • Increased digital noise

I've never seen this happen in Aperture. All of sudden, this morning, when export images to Photoshop or to the Dodge and Burn plug-in and make corrections or enhancement, I see a very noticeable increase in digital noise in images after I save the edited images back to Aperture. Anyone know a reason for this? I'm using Aperture 2.1.

Jonathan, thanks for responding. But no I haven't changed anything in Highlights and Shadow adjustments. I use those features in editing photos, but I haven't changed anything that I know of.
I appears that the extra noise is being applied at the start of the export to Photoshop or Apple's own retouch plug-in.
I'm wondering how safe would be to just delete Aperture and re-install it? I have at least two jobs in the current library that need to finish up, so I'm reluctant to delete the application right now.

  • High ISO Noise Setting on 6D

Just got a 6D as a companion to my BMCC for when I need low light shots and wider shots. It's been a little while since I had my 5D MKIII and I am trying to remember how I had my camera set up for video. Right now I am trying to figure out if I need to have High ISO Noise Reduction set to off or another setting. I have heard from photographers that it can cause you to lose some detail, and it's best to address the noise in post. Since I will be shooting at higher ISOs I am wondering how I should set it. For those who shoot a lot of video, what has been your experience in different situations?
Also, what do you guys think about the current picture styles? I have heard a lot about Technicolor. People praise it a lot but I also hear that it has some noise problems. Would love to hear some opinons on current picture profiles.

See below for text from the 6D manual . This paragraph sounds like HINR is added to the metadata of a RAW file and not directly applied. It also could mean that LightRoom and Adobe RAW don't use this metadata? Does anyone know if this guess is correct?
    EOS 6D Manual:
If you play back a RAW image with the camera or print an image directly, the effect of high ISO speed noise reduction may look minimal. Check the noise reduction effect or print noise-reduced images with Digital Professional (provided software).

  • N8 camera produces dull images and quality good

    Hi al..
I am a die hard fan of nokia .Very exited to but nokia n8.
I went Happily to take live demo of n8 and book it.But i was shocked a lot...
When i tested the camera.. the brightness of the image it produces is very less such that when shooted at a distant even the person's face is unrecognizable.
I took several shoots, changed all settings, even went to another  show room.the same.Even the pic quality is not good when zoomed in starts pix-elating,some noise in image quality.
I know N8 has best camera and spec ,But i cant believe the quality it produces in real.
What is this.Is that it the quality or both the n8 i examined are fault pieces (no way both are fresh pieces)?
Or the pieces that my state/Country is getting is not such quality manufacturing.?
Because none of the review or post have said like the camera quality exp is bad.I my self could nt believe the quality.
[next time i will try to include the samples.]
Kindly provide your valuable comments and solutions

  • O.T.  Image Stacker

Shareware but free trial. Windows only.
Image Stacker combines multiple images into a single image. It can be used to overcome one of the last remaining limitations of digital cameras compared to their film counterparts: their inability to take very long exposures. Image Stacker can also be used to reduce the appearance of "digital noise" in images created by digital cameras or scanners, and create "synthesized long-exposures" without overexposure.

    Malcolm....
I came across this a while back but somehow I just can't seem to take Microsoft seriously when it comes to Digital Imaging - sure they'd like to rule the world but they're coming from behind.
In my opinion the market in Digital Cameras is going to peak soon and these are the major drivers behind Microsofts playing in the Digital Imaging world. So which camera maker is going to introduce a new format and convince people to buy it when it doesn't do anything better than the one they already have.

  • Noise removal in Motion capture data

    Hello to you.
I am currently trying to remove noise in image sequences
containing motion capture data. As a part of this project I am
clustering pixels into groups and want to remove pixel groups with
less than 4 members as these groups are regarded as noise.
The problem is that when I have a nested list with e.g 3 sub
lists/clusters (as indicated below) and I use a repeat loop to
remove the sub lists with less than 4 pixel coordinates, but my
code does not seem me to do this correctly (There are three sub
lists where 2 of these should be removed, but only 1 of these 2 are
deleted while I am unable to remove the last one).
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can modify the
current code so that it does the job correctly?
    The code is attached below.
    on exitFrame me
    dataPointMembersInIndividualClusters =
    [#ClusterDatapointMembers: [point(477, 453), point(477, 459),
    point(477, 460), point(478, 454), point(478, 456)],
    #ClusterDatapointMembers: [], #ClusterDatapointMembers: [point(462,
    405),point(462, 405),point(462, 405)]]
    MinimumNumberOfDataPointsInClusters = 4
repeat with analyzeCluster = 1 to
    dataPointMembersInIndividualClusters.count
    if dataPointMembersInIndividualClusters
    [analyzeCluster].count < MinimumNumberOfDataPointsInClusters
    then
    dataPointMembersInIndividualClusters.deleteAt(analyzeCluster)
    end if
    end repeat
    put dataPointMembersInIndividualClusters
    halt
    end
    Suggestions will be happily appreciated
    Have a glittering day

The problem is that you're deleting things from the list
    you're looking at
and things get moved towards the start, thus skipping an
    iteration you
wanted to examine. If you start at the end, you won't get
    that problem.

    nMin = 4
    nClusters=count(clusters)
repeat with i = nClusters down to 1
if clusters [ i ].count < nMin then
    clusters.deleteAt(i)

  • Clicking Sound When Images Load

    Greetings,
I am getting a faint clicking noise whenever images load onto the screen - such as on the internet, or when an application opens. Also, I get the sound when I scroll on a web page with my external mouse. Any ideas? Many thanks!

    Albert:
    • Are you able to detect the location of the clicking sound? That is, does is come out of the speakers, or from somewhere else on the computer, like under the keyboard etc.?
    • Do you have the original HDD in the computer? While booted from the computer go to Apple Menu > About this Mac > More Info > Hardware > ATA. On the right pane at the top you will see ATA device tree. The first ATA Bus entry is your internal HDD. Select it, then go to the second section and doubleclick on the ID, copy and paste is in your response.
The sounds you describe are most commonly associated with the internal HDD and we need to eliminate that as the cause. If it seems to be coming from the speakers, turn the sound off, and see if it makes a difference.
    Good luck.

  • Removing noise in optical motion capture data

    Hello to you.
I am building my own optical motion capture system. In
relation to this I have coded a modified K-means clustering
algorithm in LINGO, which can be used for removing image noise in
the captured image data. Noise is in this case regarded as being
sparse groups of pixels (e.g they do not belong to a marker as
these are represented as compact pixel groups).
In order to evaluate the performance of my algorithm I need
to compare it with some other noise filtering solution. Does anyone
know if there is any suitable such LINGO code available? Possibly
    Mean or Median filters…
    I hope for positive replies:)

  • Saving floating point images

I currently use averaging to get a noise mitigated image in single precision. I do all calculations with the data in array format but I would like to save the averaged images in floating point for posterity's sake. I have noticed that I can display the images of datatype Grayscale (SGL) no problem but have found no way to save the image without rounding the data into integer format. I think i'm out of luck but I wanted to see if anyone knew of another way.

Whoops, I forgot to mention a key detail in that the images would need to be viewed by users without LabVIEW.
When wonky stuff is observed we use ImageJ for image manipulation.
That was indeed a key detail. Have you had a look at the TIFF format. I know that TIFF can handle FP images, but I don't know if there are the corresponding readers (Photoshop ?). Of course, you'll have to develop your own file saver, since IMAQ vision TIFF file save is restricted to integers.
