Noise in LR 2.6 (poor) vs. iPhoto (good)

Hi all
Additional to my Canon 1d MkIII I use a Canon G11 since some month. These days I'm processing many G11-RAW files from a journey. Especially with high-ISO pictures, above ISO 500, I was very disappointed about the mad ISO noise in many pictures.
Some days ago I opened one of those horrible ISO 1600 pictures in iPhoto'09 and I was really very surprised, that the quality of the pictures is ways better in iPhoto than in LR 2.6 by default parameters.
As I could read, the noise handling will be much better in LR 3 than in LR 2.6. Since I can't wait to the lunch of the production version of LR 3, I'm thinking to go for Apple Aperture or Phase One C1, since the noise handling in LR 2.6 is not acceptable in my opinion.
What are your experiences regarding poor noise handling of LR 2.6 especially with noisier high-ISO cameras? How do you work around the noise problems?
I'm disappointed about the Adobe LR 2.x noise quality. I didn't expect the result of this random comparison LR vs. iPhoto.
Cheers

You are looking at the image in Develop(Entwickeln) zoomed out. In that view, Lightroom does not apply any noise reduction or sharpening for speed reasons. It also only shows you a subset of the pixels, again for speed reasons. This tends to highly overexaggerate the noise. It is not really there. To see what it really does to the image, zoom in to 1:1, or go back to Library (Bibliothek), where you will see an actual rendering of the entire image the same way that iPhoto shows you. You will see the noise disappear. When zoomed at 1:1, do some optimization of the noise reduction settings as you have no luminance noise reduction dialed in at all. This should get you much better image quality than what you can get from iPhoto. LR3 will have even better noise reduction but it hasn't been released yet except for a very incomplete beta.

  • Video from JVC GZ-VX815 - poor on iPhoto, good on iMovie

I searched all over the internet and could not find anything. I have this camcorder from JVC, the GZ-VX815. iPhoto recognizes the videos and imports them. However whenever there's movement, you get horizontal lines on the screen. Now in iMovie that doesn't happen.
While I am fine with working with iMovie or other video editing software, my wife uses only iPhoto to view her pictures and videos.
What I would like to know is if this is normal and why this is happening. Is there a solution other than sticking with iMovie (or Premiere)?
Attached are two screenshots to show what happens.

  • Poor quality iPhoto slideshows when imported to fcpx

When I imported my iphoto slideshows into fcpx the quality is terrible. I have tried everything I can think of but no luck. I export them as a QT movie then import them. Is there a better way or correct way to preserve the original quality?

I am also using a D80, and just recently switched from jpeg fine to RAW thinking it would give me some more flexibility in the post processing ... but I too have found that the images are very grainy...I'm a novice at some of the cutting edge digital editing technology... hence the use of Iphoto... but I'm disappointed that it seems my image quality has suffered.
    any thoughts?

  • Poor quality iphotos in iMovie / iDVD

    Hi,
I am very frustrated, I have always had good quality DVD movies out of IMovie. Following an upgrade of Mac I now have HD iMovie. When I import still photos (of high quality) the iMovie degrades the quality on the screen. I perserved in the hope the final quality DVD (having dropped the finished product into iDVD) would be better. How wrong I was!. Why has the quality deteriorated soooooo badly?
(the only thing I know I did wrong when I started up the iMovie for the first time was select NTSC as opposed to PAL but this can be corrected as the process continues can't it?)
    Any views?

If your iMovie project is NTSC but it should be PAL then Yes, that can cause image problems. Try creating a PAL project to see if that works better.

  • X1 Carbon: Sandisk SSD or Toshiba SSD? Good/Poor? LCD Good/Poor?

Initially, may have said that the SSD in X1 Carbons were Sandisk SSDs, and that they performed very poorly on 4K speed tests - which are true when one looks at these reviewers doing 4K tests.   So...that's a bummer.
Then, someone posted a teardown picture of the inside of an X1Carbon, which showed a Toshiba SSD.
Which SSD is the one that will go inside the consumer X1 Carbons rather than the reviewers' early samples?  Confusing.  Whichever one it is, is it any good including its poor 4K performance?   I mean real life performance: any good?
Also, most say the LCD is rather nice on the x1C.   they mostly said that for a 14", the 1600x900 hits an excellent sweetspot.   the Z 2012's 1080 was downright annoying when i tried it out last week because on every single website, one needed to do Control ++++++ to increase the size, otherwise, you'd not be able to read it!!   1080 is too much resolution for a 13.1" LCD on the Z 2012.
Then, the Engadget review just posted today says that one sees space around each pixel on the x1c's LCD!!   they didn't quite like the LCD on the x1C!!!    can that be true?  or is that an early reviewer's sample??    Highly conflicting points of views, right?
i can't believe that the pitch is so poor on the 14" 1600x900.   that just doesn't sound right to me.
any ideas from the good folks on this forum?
    thx in advance.

    What a nightmare!
The technician came over and opened the computer and was not able to put the cable in the correct place. Forced with his tools the cable against the case and damaged the laptop exterior case either in the back and either at monitor level and base level.
Amazing: now not only the cable is still there but I got scratches from tools all over.
I reported it to Lenovo and apparently the technician reported that he replaced the cable and the problem disappeared.
I hope someone fires the guy!
Lenovo told me that they are going to prepare another action plan so now I am curious of what the next guy will do.....
I will avoid to make further comments for now.... let's wait for the scenes in the upcoming chapters.

  • UI API: Poor performance in Goods Receipt (PO) while inserting rows

    Hi all,
we wrote small procedure, where we import some data from .txt file into Good Receipt (PO) document. There is no many infos there, we fill only these columns in GR matrix:
    ItemCode, Quantity, Warehouse
For inserting data into document's row we use this code:
    oItCdCol.Cells(lRow).Specific.Value = Trim(sItm)
    oQtyCol.Cells(lRow).Specific.Value = Trim(sQty)
    oWHSCol.Cells(lRow).Specific.Value = Trim(sWHS)
    lRow = lRow + 1
but with more than 30 lines in import file the performance is very poor, with cca. 300 lines it takes many hours. The GoodReceipt form is during import freezed of course.
We use SBO2005 SP01 Patch 22. Is there performance problem with documents generally in this patch or something else?
    Thanks in advice.
    Kind regards
    Libor Mego.

Are you working with Visual Basic 6 or Visual Basic from Visual Studio?.
If you response VS, then try to use directly
    oItCdCol.Cells(lRow).Specific.Value = sItm.<b>Trim</b>()
There is not the same througputh with olders function versus the newest.
My recomendation is the same from Microsoft, "enjoy" always to use the Class routines like Trim, Integer.parse, <object>.ToString, ....

  • Finally considering using iPhoto - good with large dbs?

I never liked iPhoto before, and when I bought iLife yesterday, iPhoto was the app I had the least expectations for.
But I tried it and immediately liked the auto-events feature. What a great organizing tool. I like the way you can immediately scan events by rolling over them with your cursor. So I'm thinking of using iPhoto from now on.
One question - how good is it with dealing with 20,000 - 30,000 photos, like 20G - 30G of data?
    Thanks!

You shouldn't have a problem with that size library as long as you have sufficient free space on your boot disk. It's strongly recommended you have a minimum of 10 GB free, better to have around 20 if you're going to use iDVD much. You have plenty of RAM. Also check the tip at the end of my signature.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • HT2481 Is iPhoto good for storing pictures,

where on the hard drive do they get stored?

    Yes
By default (and very strongly recommended) in the iPhoto library in the pictures folder in your account - The location of teh iPhoto library can be anywhere as long as it is on a volume formated Mac OS extended (journaled)

  • Extremely poor performance on good machine (dual xeon, Revodrive, SLI etc.)

    Hello,
I've looked for answer, read all the articles about making better performance of PS and I still can't solve the problem... I even tried Photoshop CC and the performance was... worse. I measured time it took to open some files or make some of my actions.
Programs performance is so incredible bad, it's not even annoying it is some disaster... sometimes I have to wait more than 10 seconds for response when I'm moving a layer or few seconds when applying some very simple transformations to smart object (logo etc.). I spent a lot of money on my workstation hoping it will work smooth and fine, and it seems that it is working worse than my old machine for 1/10 of its price. I hoped that moving to Cloud will solve the problem and the new software understands better new hardware I own, but NO! as I mentioned it is working even slower.
The problem only affects Photoshop and Illustrator, After Effects run perfectly fast... but I work mostly on Photoshop and Illustrator. Most of the time both programs are opened.
Some more hardware details of my workstation:
    Dual Xeon 2630 @ 2.3 GHz
    32 GB Ram
    System Drive: PCI-E Revodrive 3 x2 240 GB
    Storage Drive: 3GB WD
Graphic Card: 2x GF GTX 680 in SLI (2GB memory each)
    System: Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit
    Adobe Suite CS 6 Master
I keep to all advices from "Photoshop performance" articles. I tried another SSD drive as scratch drive, all drivers are up to date, system is "fresh installed" without any garbage...
I'll really apreciate any good advice that could help me solve the problem, so I'll be able to work normal. Without lost hours on waiting for the simpliest actions.

I just to reinstalled drivers and NOTHING... (Latest nVidia drivers clean install)... I also looked on my resources manager and after few munutes photoshop easly uses more than 50% of avaiable RAM... when I'M working procesor usage is about 5-9% (12% was maximum) and when I run also Adobe Illustrator memory usage goes above 60% but cpu usage is still low (5-7%). I have 32GB of memory... PSD file I work on is 750MB... Maybe there is some issue with my memory, buffer or something like this? Any idea?
When I copy 1920x1080px layer from one program to the other it takes few minutes, and sometimes programes crush... even if I'm not working the memory usage is now above 60% - shouldn't it go down?
oth Photoshop and files I work on are on the same drive (PCI-E SSD OCZ RevoDrive 3x2 - so it shoulb be super-fast...).
Sorry for bad spellings - I'm so angry now!!!
    HELP PLEASE!

  • Printing from InDesign Poor; From Photoshop Good

I have some images, that I converted to B&W in Photoshop. If I print them (samsung clp-315), from Photoshop CS2, they look great.
I saved them as TIF files and imported them into InDesign CS4.  This is my first book layout. I printed them to see how they were going to turn out and they look terrible. I've tried everything I know to remedy the situation.  I don't know how it will look at the publisher...but my hopes are low since it looks bad here.
    Any thoughts? Help.

    OK.
I've tried 300dpi black and white tiff, 600dpi black and white tiff.  (printing from ID to a Samsung CLP-315)  It looks really weak and washed out.
If I generate a PDF from ID and print it the contrast and picture are great.  For this reason I don't know what to expect when it goes to press. I tried the links panel on one of the images (embed link) as someone suggested. It didn't work.  (Pics made with PS CS2)
For Output I have tried Composite Gray and Composite RGB--the only two options I have with this printer.
    Graphics, Images, Send Data: All
    Color Management:  Proof
    Profile: Document RGB
Am I doing something wrong?  The end result will be a submission of a high res PDF to the publisher. So if PDF prints look good on the printer, should I just assume it will look good at the press?
    Thank you for your time.

  • Poor speeds - now good !!

Ive got Infinity  - 72 down/18 up- last few weeks Ive had very slow download speeds 15-25
I was pulling my hair out trying allsorts and gave up and was ready to accept the slow speeds.
I then needed to factory restore my PC, for a different reason - since then I get 68/16
If all else fails, tey a factory restore/Reinstall your op system - you never know what little bugs there are

    Thanks Tomperkins,
It sounds may be a port issue at your cab or exchange or could be a routing issue somewhere. It also sounds like you are on ADSL rather than FTTC (VDSL2) which you are surposed to be on. You can check this looking at the router/homehub stats.
    I have raised this up.

  • IPhoto 5 issues

I have recently upgraded to iPhoto 5 and shortly there after it dropped all my albums, distorts all the thumb nail images and opens to a blank palette when I double click on any single image along with a blank thumb nail bar at the top of the window. In addition, it crashes anytime I try to edit any image and slide shows give me a black screen only. I have trashed it several times and have reloaded iPhoto and to no avail, it still functions extremely poorly. Does anyone know whats going on????

  • Best workflow for Photo Album site - Aperture-iPhoto-iWeb??

*_I posted this on iWeb board, but perhaps this is a more appropriate audience*._
I am trying to find the best way to get Pics online. I shoot RAW and post-process in Aperture. Have used:
Aperture web gallery - easy workflow, very poor user interface, good image resolution
iphoto - extra work to get from Aperture library, nice design but very very slow loading of pics!!, not happy with image resolution
iweb - nice interface, fast, but not happy with image resolution.
My goal is a nice user interface for viewing pics in albums, fast, but with GOOD image quality. Is there a way to adjust image resolution in iWEB? Seems like the default is Preview image quality, despite using full resolution JPEG exported from Aperture. It is somewhat disappointing to work so hard in Aperture on adjustments, but then view low res images on website.
    Any Suggestions?

When you say "low res images on website" do you mean those created by Aperture? It is possible to duplicate one of the default web gallery formats in Aperture, and then modify it so that the photos output are larger e.g. 950pixels wide instead of 800. I've done that with the Stock Black format - I now have a Stock Black Large which is similar on the thumbnails screen, but much larger when people click through to the larger image.
I think to do it you have to find the folder containing the web presets and make a copy of one of them.
Its fiddly but possible to do. Hopefully they'll improve this in a future release

  • Define & describe "Noise Gate" Effect for Real Instrument

Newbie question: Can someone do this, or point me to a good discussion of the use of the Noise Gate effect? I searched for this term throughout the GB forum and found very little. I see that it dampens sounds at specific decibel levels, but how might it be used for, say, spoken word audio with unwanted back ground noise? I know the Graphic Equalizer is good for that purpose, but is the use of the Noise Gate related to that?

The way the noise gate works is pretty straightforward: It cuts the audio off as soon as it is below a certain level, the slider determines that level. It's a good weapon of choice for electric guitar if your amp (or amp sim) creates a little hum or buzz that you hear when you're not playing. On spoken word recordings, it won't help you a lot - the quiet parts will be dead quiet, but the speaking passages will remain unaltered and the noise will still be there. And you'll probably notice each time the gate kicks in, which makes the whole recording sound weird. Careful EQing is probably the better choice.
