Noise level core i7 "loaded" 27" 2011 model?

I'm considering a 3.4GHz Core i7 27" iMac with 8GB RAM and 2GB graphics card. What sort of noise can I expect from the fan due to heat generation form the faster CPU and extra RAM?
Unfortunately, Apple specs only list noise leve at idle and don't say what model.
Also, how good/bad is HDD noise?
(I'm currently using a _very_ quiet, but ageing,  3.2 GHz PC in a conventional case (i.e., easy to ventilate) and would like to switch to iMac.)

Your Mac only has 24GB's of free storage space. That will definitely slow your Mac down.
Click your Apple menu  top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
Rule of thumb. Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.
Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk
Also, open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
/Library/StartupItems
Click Go the move the Sibelius7LicenceServer file the Trash.
Also, if you aren't syncing a Blackberry remove the USB rim driver. Visit the Blackberry website for uninstall instructions.

  • SQL Dev 2.1:Ability to save and load visual query models?

At SQL Dev 2.1, do we now have the ability to save and load visual query models as with TOAD? Or has that functionality been rolled into the for-pay Data Modeler extension? Seemed strange to hide the functionality deep within SQL Worksheet, then not allow query models to be saved or loaded. From what I recall, load/save was scheduled to be in 2.0.
I've not yet downloaded and installed 2.1, but also as I recall, it was promised to be a significant (e.g. new-feature rich) release. Has it lived up to that promise? Hoping also that it's not so buggy as to not merit an upgrade. At my workplace, folks have different versions of SQL Dev 1.X installed, each for the purpose of retaining functionality that got broken in future releases, etc. Would love to be able to advise them to retire their 1.X installs in favor of 2.1.

Dana, We are working on the query builder. We have not done anything with it in recent releases as we knew that it needed completely overhauled and a
couple of bug fixes were not going to give us the query builder we needed. Sue will be able to tell you more as the we get closer to releasing it as a feature. Thanks Barry. I know it's probably impossible to give firm dates, but my colleagues would love to know, ballpark, when query builder might be ready. Any particular year/quarter that's targeted for?
A lot of the bugs in the 2.1 are probably my fault as we decided to build a framework which allowed tasks to be scheduled like eclipse and push them to the
background. Coupled with this, we tore apart the worksheet to allow us to fit tasks in, but to also give us the ability to do some of the enhancement requests
that you guys, our users, have been asking for. While its not perfect, I believe its getting much better from both a functionality and performance standpoint. The
worksheet will not change again and there are no enhancements logged or scheduled which will do that. The issues that have come as part of 2.1 are being
addressed and we are fixing the highest priority ones as we speak. One of my priorities is to make these components as rock solid as possible. Thanks again. It really is a nice tool to work with, and I'm grateful to have it. I would choose stability for existing features over new ones, but I suppose there always has to be a balance in development. What was really scary in the past was getting bizarre / wrong answers in query results--that's a complete show stopper; e.g. clicking on a row/col intersection in a result set row would show strange and false values. New features can wait, but core functionality must be solid. If one can't presume integrity of query results, it's game over--using a version of SQL Developer that returns inconsistent result sets between runs could be Considered Harmful, or so it is to me.
Anyway, thanks for responding and I hope Oracle Corp gets you whatever assistance you need to improve the quality of existing functionality while adding new features; with one not being at the expense of the other. :-) Glad also to see Sue has authored a book on the tool. Hopefully that will drive customer demand and force increased allocation of development resources toward the product. I'd like to think having out-of-the-box tools that are a joy to use might even increase market share.
Data Modeler I would love to use, but am completely priced out of it. Enterprise Architect from Sparx Systems is the best value there so far as I can tell.

  • How to reduce noise level on the DAQ AO?

    Hello everyone,
I am using an analog output channel of a PCI-6014. The DAQ is sitting in a PC slot of a computer running Windows 2000. On the other side the DAQ is connected to an external (proprietary) conditioner box using the standard NI's shielded cable.
The problem is that the noise on the AO seems to be too high (around 2 mV peak-to-peak) depending on the computer load despite what is actually sent to that output. When the computer is really busy (booting up, linking an exectable, etc.), the noise level on the AO grows dramatically, while at the time the computer is idle, the noise level seems to be inside the spec range (around 1 LSB).
I replaced a computer power supply with a more powerful one, and moved the DAQ to the next PCI slot, but both measures gave just a minor improvement if any at all.
What can i do? Switch to a better-shielded or just different DAQ? Use a different form factor of the computer motherboard? What else?
    I greatly appreciate your help.
    Mike Faynberg

    Mike,
The noise could possibly be coming from the 5V supply if it is really
noisy. Perhaps a more powerful (expensive) supply could help here?
As a last resort, I've heard of people wrapping DAQ cards in aluminum
foil (completely unsupported by NI). Of course, in order to prevent
shorting, you'd want to wrap it in something insulative first, like wax
paper. And while you are in the kitchen, could you whip me up a
    sandwich?

  • Macbook Pro (Late 2011 model issue)

I purchased my Macbook pro (late 2011 Model) a couple of months back, towards the end of last year. Staright after i had purchased it, and had got it delivered i experienced cracking and clicking noises coming from within the Hinge of the Macbook. And got it replaced for a brand new one as i was still within the 2 weeks prior to purchase, as the apple policy states i was eligible to get a new if i had any problems. So i did. And the brand new replacement macbook pro that i have NOW has the same problem. Ever since i got the other one replaced THIS ONE has the problem or rather much worse, Cracking and clicking noises everywhere whenever i handle the notebook or carry it there is cracking noises everywhere. Whenever i open and close the screen lid, UP or Down. There is loud clicking noises coming from inside, sounds like something is breaking. This is totally unacceptable. First macbook had issue, replaced it, And now replaced Macbook pro is much worse. Since i had it replaced i havent had time to come bring it in. It still bears the same preoblem and is getting worse!

You're just going to have to take it into your local Apple Store. They won't replace again but you're still within your one-year warranty so they will certainly repair. I have the same model and have not have any of the problems that you describe.

  • ATI Radeon X1900 XT Noise levels

    Hi,
I'm considering a Mac Pro + 4GB RAM + ATI X1900 XT to run Apeture, based on the experiences & recommendations in this forum.
Can anyone comment on the noise level of the ATI X1900 XT compared with, say, the standard GeForce 7300 GT? I use my current Mac to run iTunes, as well as some other sound based apps that would suffer if the graphics card noise level was like a jumbo jet on final approach.
Does anyone have experiences here they can share?
I read in the forum that there is a possibility of a ATI Radeon X1950 XTX for Mac Pro that is quieter ... any truth in that?
    Much appreciated.

I have a MacPro 2.66 with the X1900 which was preinstalled in the system. The card is quite noisy but it is at an acceptable level. The reason you hear it is that the MacPro itself is very silent. Two components are competing which can make more noise: the harddisk (standard model with 250 GB) and the X1900. :-))
The sound from the X1900 is a constant fan noise which you are able to ignore while you work with this awesome machine. The performance of Aperture is simply great with this card even if I just installed 1GB of RAM!
Let me say it this way: If you want great performance for Aperture you should arrange with the fan noise of the X1900. Im convinced that we will see much more silent cards in the future which will give us the same performance. Then the time for a nice christmas present will have come! :-))

  • Upgrading HDD on new MBP 15" and transfering all Data and settings from 2011 model to 2012 one

    Hi all,
I have just purchased a new 2012 MBP 15" (Non-retina) machine as well as a hybrid 750GB drive from Seagate and 16GB RAM upgrade from Crucial. Both machines are running the latest versions of Lion. What I would like to do is the following:
Upgrade the HDD & RAM in the new 2012 MBP - I think it is the same procedure as the 2011 model (which I have already done using Carbon Copy Cloner)
Transfer all the data, settings, programmes files, docs etc to the new 2012 MBP and new drive
Q1. Would I have to clone the current HDD in the 2012 MBP with the new hybrid one first and then install into the machine before transferring the data from the 2011 machine?
Q2. Or - Could I just clone the current HDD in the 2011 model using CCC to the new Hybrid HDD and then instal it into the new 2012 MBP?
Whats the best and safest way to achieve this please? Any advice very welcome!
    Many Thanks

So, everything went fairly well. It started out looking like it was going to take 2.5 hours, but it ended up taking about 5-6 (I think - I went to sleep).
A couple of observations - at first I didn't see where it restored everything, but I later saw that when I logged out that it had created my user account as a separate login.
Some things didn't transfer - most everything did, but there were a few things with my Parallels VM that did not. I have to get to the bottom of that. It did make me re-register once I launched it.
    On the hardware specifically:
    1. I am not yet noticing the performance bump that I thought I would going to the i5 processor - seemed snappy when I first had it on with OS only - but so far not noticeably faster than my Core 2 Duo 2.4.
    2. battery - way too early to tell, but I am hoping the battery needs time to condition itself and figure out who it is (battery life was my #1 reason for buying this) - right now I am on battery power and have 79% remaining or 2hrs. 2 hours??!! This is supposed to be a 8-9 hour battery. Hoping time works this out. Brightness if only up about 20%, on wifi, keybaord backlighting fairly dim. Nothing coming over from my old machine would have affected this, would it have? (I do know that when the machine was empty with just the OS on it, it was reading about 8 hrs remaining). So much for living on the edge and going to the office without my power adapter today.
    3. Heat - my 13" was not hot on the bottom - this one is - on the back left part of the unit. Reminding me of my Powerbook G4. Not very lap comfortable. ??
    Any thoughts?

  • Where to get a 2011 model non refurb 21.5 inch?

Looking for the last generation one. The one pre loaded with lion. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

If I understand you correctly, you are looking for a used Mac?
The best source is Apple's Special Deals page, but they are refurbished, as good as new, with a new warranty, which you do not want. This means you are going to have to search Craigslist, Amazon Marketplace, eBay, etc. and quality concerns are going to be a factor. Macs hold their value and you are not going to find a significant discount from new.
If you still elect to go that route, make sure you are not buying stolen goods, and take whatever precautions there are to ensure the hardware is completely functional. At a minimum, run Apple Hardware Test and run the extended tests. If you find one being sold as having Mountain Lion already installed, you might as well walk away from that deal for no other reason than the seller doesn't know what he's doing. No 2011 iMacs shipped with Mountain Lion already installed, and early 2011 models may have shipped with Snow Leopard. If the Mac predated Lion, be sure the seller includes the Snow Leopard System and Applications Install DVDs because it can be difficult to obtain replacements from Apple.
    Good luck!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
That's exactly what you need. A Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter and a HDMI cable. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4241?viewlocale=en_US
This is the only way to view a video on the TV. After connecting your MacBook Air to the TV, image on your TV should show immediately. Then, press Command and F1 keys to mirror your MacBook Air display, and open the video

Running a cable to the HDMI port is still supported. (and still works on mine).
If the Arrangement tab in System Preferences > Displays isn't present then it doesn't recognize the physical connection.  Double check all cables.  If that doesn't work try a PRAM reset:

This issue seems to be caused by the October 2013 update (KB 2825655) for Excel 2013. Try to remove it or restore the system to an earlier point and check the result.

  • My imac was running snow leopard and was upgraded to Mt. Lion. My Microsoft Office for Mac now will not open.  SO since my Office was 2004, I just purchased Office for Mac 2011.  Do I delete the icons before loading Office 2011 OR after I load 2011?

Upgraded my Imac to Mt. Lion and now the Microsoft Office icons will not open WORD, EXCEL, POWERPOINT, or ENTOURAGE.  I just pruchased on Ebay
OFFICE 2011 since my old version was 2004.  DO I REMOVE THE OLD ICONS BEFORE LOADING OFFICE 2011 RO AFTER I LOAD IT???
    THANKS, DR PEPPERMINT

Office 2011 will install in a separate folder. But do not install Office 2011 until you remove Office 2004. It comes with its own uninstalled located in the MS Office folder. Only use the uninstaller to get rid of it. Then install Office 2011.
Office 2004 and Other Applications Don't Work in Lion/Mountain Lion
If you have Office 2004 which is a PPC-only suite, it will not work in Lion/Mountain Lion. You need to upgrade to Office 2011 - Mactopia - or you can try the freeware suite, Libre Office, that is functionally similar to Office 2007 for Windows except it works on Lion/Mountain Lion.
You may want to consider as well:
These two suites are similar to Libre Office but not as current or as well-supported:
    NeoOffice
    Open Office
And, then there is Apple's iWork suite:
Pages - word processing and layout
    Keynote - presentation
    Numbers - spreadsheet
Each can open and save Office compatible files. They may be purchased separately via the Mac App Store for $19.99 each.
As for other software, any PPC-based software will not run in Lion or Mountain Lion because Rosetta is no longer part of OS X. You will need to upgrade to Intel versions of the software.
(Access to the Mac App Store requires Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or higher and an Apple ID.)

  • MacBook Pro 17" Early 2011 Model: Auto Shutdown/Restart Problem

    Hey guys!
This is my first time to sign in, join the community, and ask a question or create a discussion. FYI, I really have little knowledge on tech stuff so please bear with me. Here's my problem, and I hope you can give out your suggestions:
I have a MacBook Pro 17" Early 2011 Model which I have upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion.
A month or two ago, it had started shutting down or restarting at random times. As time passed, this problem became more frequent.
I finally decided to have it checked at Digital Hub, a licensed Apple distributor. After almost a week, they've finally diagnosed that the problem is with my battery. I got my MacBook pro back around 2 (two) weeks ago, and ever since then I had to use an outlet in order for it and myself to work properly. Right now, I'm still saving up to purchase new batteries.
Recently, however, I've noticed that my MacBook Pro auto restarts even when plugged. Take note, RESTART and no longer shutting down completely. Upon further trials, I've finally concluded that it does so only during the use of heavy programs such as Diablo 3, Final Cut Pro X, and when rendering with iMovie. I have yet to try with Adobe products, particularly with Lightroom and Photoshop, and see if it does the same. But more or less, that's what I've noticed so far.
Given that I still haven't purchased the battery yet, I know it's still vague to know the real probelm/solution. But with the given situations, what are you views on this matter? Please let me know. It'd be of great help. Thank you and I hope to hear from you soon!

Thanks for taking so much time in helping me.
    Just an update:
    2 loops/passes done - no errors.
Called up Digital Hub and talked to the technician, he says there are 3 possible problems:
    1. Battery (which is still inside the laptop) may cause some disturbances with the electric current
    2. Software related - most likely re-formatting may be needed
    3. Video card may have failed, which means complete change of the logic board ----> worst case
I'm crossing my fingers that it's either of the first two.
